Chapter 3

" My Lord, a telegram has come for you."

" Thank you, Carson. Ah, it is from Michael Gregson, the publisher. He says he will be coming to Downton Tomorrow to look at the manuscript. Carson, please wire Mr. Gregson that he can stay the night if he would like to do so." said Robert.

" Very Good, my Lord. Will there be anthing else?"

" Yes, Carson please bring some ginger infused tea." said Cora.

"Very good, my Lady."

" My dear is anything the matter?" asked Robert.

" Oh no, darling,it is just a spell of queasiness." replied Cora.

" Well, I will wire Dr. Clarkson and have him take a look at you." said Robert.

"Oh,Robert there is no reason bring him out at this hour." replied Cora.

"Oh yes there is. He will be brought here at his earliest convinence. " said Robert.

" Oh alright, If you insist, Robert." said Cora.

" I do,my Dear." replied Robert.


"Well, my Lady, I believe that a congratulations is in order." smiled Dr. Clarkson.

" Doctor, you don't mean..." she tailed off.

" Yes, my Lady, you are pregnant."

" Oh my!" exclaimed Cora.

" It must be a shock to you after all these years. Again I offer my most sincere congratulations ." replied Dr. Clarkson.

" It is a shock. Thank you again for coming out at this late hour, and for telling me this most joyous news."

" You are very welcome, my Lady. " said Dr. Clarkson.

After the doctor left Cora fell into one of the happiest slumbers she has had in the past eighteen years.


The next day...

" Robert, what do you think about tidying up the nursery?" asked Cora.

" What do you mean, tidying up the nursery. Cora are you pregnant?" questioned a bewildered Robert.

"Yes, Robert, I am pregnant." smiled Cora.

" Mary, Edith, Sybil, and Mother, please come in here." said Robert.

" What is it, Papa?" questioned all the girls in unison.

" What is it, Robert?" questioned Mrs. Levinson

" Cora is Pregnant." said Robert happily.

"What!" exclamed Mary and Edith.

" I am going to be a big sister." smiled Sybil as the realization dawned on her.

" You're joking!" exclaimed. Mrs. Levinson.

" Yes I am pregnant, and no Mother I am not joking. smiled Cora.

"Wait until Granny hears about this!" Exclaimed Edith.

On that note they shared a laugh and went to luncheon.


"Mr. Michael Gregson, my Lord." said Carson

" Hello Mr. Gregson. It is a pleasure to meet you." said Robert. "

" The pleasure is mine Lord Grantham. Do you know the approximate age, and any other information that would draw interest to the manuscript? asked Mr. Gregson.

" Yes, It is about one hundred and fifty years old. The manuscript was started by my Great-great grandfather, the fourth Earl of Grantham. It was continued by my Grandfather, and my father after him." explained Robert.

" Papa, I came from Granny's house and she is demanding that you go to her house as soon as possible." said Edith " Oh I am sorry, Papa. I did not know that you had company." apologized Edith.

" It is quite alright, my Dear. Lady Edith Crawley this is Mr. Michael Gregson." said Robert

" It is very nice to meet you, Mr. Gregson." smiled Edith

" It is very nice to meet you as well." replied Mr. Gregson.

" I am very sorry Mr. Gregson, but I must go. Do you mind if Lady Edith will keep you company while I go se what my mother needs?

" Not at all, Lord Grandtham." replied Mr. Gregson, as Robert left the room.

" Shall we have tea, Mr. Gregson?" asked Edith.

" I would find that very enjoyable, My Lady."

They spent the rest of the afternoon sipping on tea and talking about Edith's interest in Journalism.
