In the Wake of Tomorrow
Dark Matter
By Steph
"When you see the darkness, there is an extraordinary opportunity for the light to burn brighter."
He could see nothing, only the cold, the phase of darkness swirling all around him.
Was he even online?
Thrum thrum.
Voices, there were voices, small whispers of chatter, they were quiet so quiet. Muffled, like someone trying speak through a glass window.
"What is his condition Ratchet?"
He felt somebody move, just slightly enough to cause a small light breeze to touch his metal.
Thrum thrum.
"Stable for now. I was able to stabilise his spark from the last fluctuation, the all Spark energy has begun to move, it has now successfully intergrated itself into Sam's main processor."
Allspark energy?
"Is there anything you can do for him?"
Was he dying?
"No". The second voice answered the first, "all we can do is watch and wait". Blue optics stared at the body on the berth for a second. "And hope".
"Yes, and hope".
Sam strained, trying to access his main motor functions, but they were off-line. His spark ached, like there was something missing.
Bumblebee... my friend, my guardian, my bond-

What is this feeling?
Ratchet, what of Bumblebee how is he coping?
Bee?
I have given Bumblebee strict orders to stay away, Sam's sparked does not need the pressure of the bond, it is barely able to cope now. I fear trying to balance itself with an incomplete spark bond could be too much stress and see Sam's spark off-line, permanently.
"I will see to it personally the Bumblebee stays away for now."
The voices fade away quietly... Once more shrouding his sensors in mist.
ALLSPARK ENERGY 74% INTERGRATED.

One, two, three
Bumblebee paced the length of the small room again and again, his bright blue optics constantly flickering towards the door.

Something was wrong, very wrong, they had to be. There had been no word. Just as soon as the thought had flickered through Bumblebee's processor the Med bay doors opened, Optimus stood in the doorway his blue optics which held a soft gaze came to rest on the smaller mech.
Bumblebee took in the expression of his superior, it caused his spark to throb in apprehension. Bumblebee didn't waste time. "Where is he? Is Sam all right?"
Optimus sighed, he slowly paced forward gently placing a hand on Bumblebee's left shoulder to stop the young Mech's fast flow of words.
"He is stable for now however his condition is critical. I am not going to lie to you Bumblebee, Ratchet does not fully understand what this.. entity is, or even if it truly is the Allspark, however it is clear that it is spreading quickly throughout Sam's main systems and there is little we can do to stop or even halt its progress."
Bumblebee kneaded softly, his head lowering to the floor. "I'm going to go see him" he announced. Bumblebee turned to leave through the open doors. Optimus laid a second hand on the Mech's other shoulder in a restraining grasp.
"Bumblebee that is out of the question. Ratchet has informed me of your incomplete bond with Sam, his spark will not be able to cope with your close proximity."
Bumblebee's optics flashed and his posture stiffened, he turned his gaze up to meet Optimus's own optics. "Optimus…I."
"Now is not the time for explanations, they can come later. For now you are to remain here, I will inform you if there is any change with Sam's condition."
Bumblebee sagged, dipping his head in acknowledgment. "Yes sir."
Optimus paused at the Med bay doors. "Bumblebee, I am not angry with you, I even understand but you are aware of the risks, and should have done more to protect both yourself and Sam from them."
Bumblebee lifted his head, his spark throbbed in response to Optimus's disappointed expression. "I know, I'm sorry Optimus."
Optimus shook his head, "I'm not the one you need to be apologising to Bumblebee."
Optimus turned away, the metal door closed behind him, Bumblebee stared at them for a moment before moving away, taking up his previous position. Through the bond, Bumblebee could sense nothing, only a dulled growing ache, a low wine escaped the yellow mech's vocaliser. He could sense Sam was in trouble, and there was nothing he do about it.
Ratchet calibrated one of the instruments on one side of the Med bay, the doors to the left then slowly opened as Optimus entered the room.
"You have spoken to him?" The medic asked quietly, his optics flickering from his leader's expression back to the golden mech laid on the metal berth.
"Yes" Optimus replied. "He is worried verging on panicking, though I believe this to be as expected in light of the circumstances."
Ratchet nodded, gently placing a hand upon Sam's chest near to where the young mech's spark pulsed. "Primus, they are both so young, too young."
Optimus took in Ratchet's posture as he paced forward, his own gaze resting on Sam's body on the berth. "Is there anything you can do?"
Ratchet looked up from Sam's frame, contemplating his response. "There is no way of severing the bond between them without endangering either one of them. It may be incomplete, but the bond has melded itself into both Sam's and Bumblebee's spark. There is nothing I can do, and even if there was, severing a sparkbond, even an incomplete one is foolish and reckless. You know this Optimus."
Ratchet jumped as Optimus slammed his fist down on the table next to the berth in front of them, the medic stared widened at the action, one that was completely out of character for his leader. "I am well aware Ratchet! But at this rate we are going to lose them both!"
Ratchet yanked a metal wrench from the now dented table and launched it at the blue Mech's head, the metal object bounced off, leaving a small dent to the left of Optimus's cheek plate. Optimus froze, gawking in shock at Ratchet's actions, it had been almost a millennia since the medic had thrown a wrench at him.
"Control yourself Prime, Sam's spark is unstable as it is without you adding to it."
Optimus still slightly shocked nodded, "I apologise Ratchet, my anger got the better of me for a moment, it will not happen again."
Ratchet exhaled air loudly through his vents, "I understand, but there is nothing more I can do for Sam accept keep him stable, it seems the Allspark energy needs to run its course."
Optimus turned regarded the golden mech on the berth once more, "if it is allowed to run its course, what will become of Sam once the energy reaches his spark?"
Ratchet placed his hand back on Sam's chest as a fan of blue light passed over the golden metal from the tip of Ratchet's fingers. "The Allspark energy has for the moment slowed, its levels are building at the boundaries of Sam's vital systems. I believe once its levels are high enough, it will then attempt to integrate into Sam's spark."
Optimus gently placed his own palm flat against Sam's chest armour, underneath his sensors, Optimus could detect the faint radiation signature, one so alien and yet so familiar at the same time. "But what of Sam, his consciousness? Will he survive the process?"
Ratchet removed his hand, turning his gaze back to Optimus's face. "I don't know, it is possible, but an occurrence such as this has never happened before. There is only one thing I am certain of."
Optimus closed his optics, he didn't need Ratchet to tell him, he knew himself, but still he asked. "What are you certain of?"
The medic paused, weighing his response, saying it aloud would only make the possibility all the more real. "If Sam loses his life in the process or their bond breaks, due to its nature, Bumblebee's spark will fade as well. You are right, we could lose them both."
Both mechs moved their gaze back to Sam's golden body, all they could do was wait.
Light pulsed in random direction, there was no logic to its movements, and there were colours, so many colours. Sam's conscience flared to life, but he was not anywhere that was familiar.
"Bee?" He asked quietly in the darkness, there was no response, Sam attempted to feel for Bumblebee's spark, but their bond was closed off.
"Where am I?" He asked out loud, though not expecting to receive an answer, all he could see was the darkness, the light that was pulsing around him a moment ago abruptly disappeared. For a few quiet moments Sam was in complete darkness but then as suddenly as it had disappeared, the light flared to life. Instead of blazing randomly as it did before it gathered together in a bright blue orb. Sam was aware of its presences, though he could not move, then he realised, he must still be unconscious. The blue orb floated slowly, it then pulsed as a voice sounded, which seemed to come from the orb itself.
"Nova." It whispered, the voice sounding like a caress.
Recognition then dawned on Sam, he knew this voice, it was the very same voice that had been whispering to him. "I know you." Sam murmured.
The blue orb wobbled almost akin to laughter. "You know me, I am a part of your past your present and your future."
Sam glowered, he wasn't sure how rational it was to become angry with a pulsing ball of blue light, but nothing seemed rational about this conversation.
"There is no need for the riddles." Sam muttered.
The orb swirled, "it is my nature."
Sam sighed, there was not much more of a response to expect from an entity claiming to be the Allspark, "What is going on? Why can't I move, or feel my own bond mate?"
The blue orb floated forward, enveloping itself around Sam's mind, "the final phases of the integration process has begun, it was necessary to dim the bond between you and your bondmate to protect you both."
Sam felt both his panic and anger beginning to rise, as that same familiar feeling etched itself into his spark.
Burning, fading an incomplete attachment.
"And what is going to happen to me, and my bond with Bumblebee once you have finished with your integration process?"
The light seemed to pull back and collapsed in on itself to reform the orb that had first appeared to Sam. "Once the process has been complete, you will be able to wield my power, the power of the one original spark, the power of the lifegiver. You will survive the process, and become my new vessel, bringing hope back to Cybertron."
Sam's spark pulsed in apprehension, he would survive, but what of his attachment to Bumblebee?
"My bond" he repeated. "What is going to become of my bond to Bumblebee?"
The light seemed to become soft once more as it wrapped its presences around Sam's mind. "To become my new vessel, you must let go of attachments to your past so that Cybertron may have a future."
It was at that moment Sam realised, he was going to lose more than his bond with Bumblebee, he was going to lose himself.
Out in the room where Optimus had left him, Bumblebee's optics flickered back to the door, it had been nearly three cycles since Sam had gone into spark arrest. Bumblebee was not sure how much longer he take the waiting.
"I have to go see Sam." Bumblebee murmured to himself. Making the decision, the yellow mech stood to leave the secure room, consequences be scrapped, he was going to go see his bondmate. As he turned to leave through the double doors that lead to the med bay a crippling pain ripped its way through Bumblebee's spark. The yellow mech stumbled, clutching a hand to his chest, Bumblebee's protection protocols quickly came online one by one, and activated Bumblebee's emergency stasis lock programme. As Bumblebee's vision began to fail, he felt the bond node between himself and Sam snap.
