meanwhile in Manchester.
" I would like to call the Lord Richard Merton to the stand." said the judge.
"Oh dear, I had no idea that he was going to be here." thought Mary as her godfather came to the stand to be questioned.
" Lord Merton, do you know where your son was on June 17, 1912?" questioned Matthew
" Yes, he was in London getting his new suit tailored." replied Lord Merton.
" Is anyone able to prove that he was at the shop?" questioned Matthew.
" His brother should be able to affirm that. Larry told me he had met him in the shop to go to luncheun." replied Lord Merton confidantly.
" Thank you, no futher questions." said Matthew.
" Calling Mr. David Gray to the stand." said the judge.
"Are you able to confirm of deny the presence of your brother at the shop?" questioned Matthew.
" I must deny this. When I came to the shop he was not there and the owner thought I was him coming late for the appointment." replied David.
"Did you notice anything different about your brother when he arrived home?" questioned Matthew.
"His suit was torn, he had a black eye, and his shirt was blood stained." replied David.
" Thank you, no further questions" said Matthew.
He then went and sat with Mary as the judge said the jury would come back with the verdict in a few moments.
" We have a verdict." announced the jury as one of the members handed the envelope that contained Larry's fate.
" The jury has collected enough evidence and has found Lawerance Gray guilty of murder of the second degree. They have reccomended a life sentence. I agree with them. Mr. Gray will serve a life sentence." announced The judge.
"Matthew do you know who that is?" questioned Mary.
" Who?" Matthew questioned
" The murder's father." said Mary.
" Yes,it is Lord Merton. Do you know him?" replied Matthew.
" He is my Godfather. We best leave so we do not miss our train, but we must tell Mama and Papa about Larry as soon as we get in. " said Mary
"Oh dear, he must be terribly upset. Yes,I suspose we should." answered Matthew
They left for the train station as soon as Matthew gathered his things and Mary offered her most sincere apologies and requested that he should come to Downton. He accepted her offer and said he would try to come by next week for her twenty-first birthday.
meanwhile back at Downton...
"Branson." called Sybil.
" Yes, My Lady?" replied Branson.
" Do you think you can teach me how to drive." questioned Sybil.
"Of course, My Lady. When would you like to start?" replied Branson.
" As soon as possible." replied Sybil happily.
" Okay, My Lady. Would tomorrow at seven be a good time to start?" questioned Branson.
"That will be absolutely perfect!" she exclaimed. " Will you drive me to Ripon now? I need a new dress to wear for Grandmama's visit." Sybil questioned.
" Absolutely, but didn't your grandmother just leave?" he replied.
" Yes, but she wants us to meet our new grandpapa." Sybil replied.
" New grandpapa?" questioned Branson
"Yes, my grandmother has just gotten remarried. I a way it will be as if he really is my grandfather because I never knew Mama's father. He died shortly before Mary was born." she replied.
" I am sorry." he said.
" It is fine. Shall we go to Ripon then?" she questioned happily.
" We shall." he smiled.
Then they went to Ripon. Sybil insisted that Tom help her find the perfect dress even though he claimed no experience in this area. He found a floor length pale blue dress. She chose that dress claiming she would have never found it without his help. They then started back to Downton.
meanwhile in Downton Village...
" Edith this would be the perfect setting for The Sketch's photo shoot they are doing next week! Do you think your father would allow my team to get a few pictures of the village and local's favorite spots." he questioned hopefully.
" I am sure he will allow that." smiled Edith.
" That is a relief. I best ask him right away." said Michael.
"We can go now if you like. I must speak to Mama about something as well." said Edith.
" That would be lovely. said Michael.
Michael and Edith did not hurry back to the house. They strolled along talking about the Sketch, Edith's love of writing, and how lovely the afternoon was.
