She heard it before she saw it. She'd been climbing a tree when she heard a crash followed by a cry of pain. Turning her head, she saw Evie on the ground, grabbing her leg. "Eves!" she yelled. Running over, the blonde immediately fell to her knees. "Are you okay?"

"My leg is bleeding." Evie said, trying not to cry.

"What happened?" Lefi asked.

"I fell out of the tree." Evie explained. The blonde looked down guiltily; it had been her idea to climb trees.

"I'm sorry, Eves." she whispered. Evie looked up in confusion.

"Why? You didn't do anything." she replied.

"But it was my idea to climb trees. You wouldn't have fallen if I hadn't come up with this idea." Lefi explained. Evie hugged her best friend.

"I'm not mad, Lef. Things happen. I'll be okay." she said. Helping the girl stand up, Lefi eyed her uncertainly. "I'll be fine."

"Your mom is going to be mad at me." Lefi mumbled. Evie shrugged.

"Who said she has to know you were there when it happened?" she asked. Lefi raised an eyebrow. "You know I'm always going to protect you."

"I couldn't protect you." Lefi mumbled. Evie smiled, despite her pain. "Come on, let's go clean your leg."

"What took you so long?" Evie asked when Lefi finally entered the infirmary an hour and a half later. The blonde rolled her eyes, her annoyance evident.

"Fairy Godmother was asking a ridiculous amount of questions that could have waited until after I knew that you were okay." she said, sitting down next to Evie. The blue-haired girl managed to send her girlfriend a small smile. "What's the damage?"

"She broke three of my fingers." Evie explained. Lefi's eyes went wide as she carefully examined her girlfriend's left middle finger, ring finger, and pinky. "I have to wear a cast. I'm not going to be able to sew for weeks."

"Eves..." Lefi whispered, knowing how much making clothes meant to the girl. Shaking her head, Evie looked down. "At least they let you have a blue cast." the blonde said, trying to look on the bright side.

"If Ben hadn't sent Heather to the dungeons, I would have thrown her back to the Isle myself." Evie replied.

"With that hand? Yeah, right." Lefi said. Evie glared. "I'm just joking."

"I'm not in the mood." the taller girl mumbled, resting her head on Lefi's shoulder. "I can't believe this is happening."

"Have I told you how sorry I am?" the blonde whispered.

"Yes, and I told you that it's not your fault." Evie replied. Lefi placed her cheek on Evie's head. "Thank you for catching me."

"I will always catch you." Lefi whispered. Hearing the promise, Evie looked up at her with a soft smile. "Come on, let's get you back to the dorm. I'm sure they're going to give you some pain killers that will make you tired."

"Okay." Evie said, standing up with her girlfriend and making her way out of the infirmary.

A few weeks later, Evie was still stuck in her cast. Everyone in Auradon knew how displeased she was about the situation.

"How's your hand feeling?" Lefi asked. Evie looked at her cast with a glare. "It's only two more weeks, Eves."

"Yeah, you're right. I can get through this." the taller girl said. The blonde smiled supportively. "I want to talk to you about something."

"What's up?"

"I want to tell my mom about us." Evie whispered. Lefi looked over quickly. "I want to go back to the Isle this weekend."

"And you want me to go with you?" the blonde asked. Evie nodded. "Your mom hates me."

"She doesn't hate you." Evie lied, earning a look from her girlfriend. "Okay, she does, but it's been awhile since she's actually seen you. It's been awhile since she's seen me. Maybe her feelings about you have changed."

"And you want me to go there without knowing if they have? Eves, that's crazy." Evie sighed. "She's going to blame me for your hand."

"That is not your fault, that was Heather's. If she tries to blame you, I'll put her in her place immediately." Evie promised. Lefi bit her lip, looking down. "I don't want to hide you from my mom anymore, Lef. I want her to know about us."

"This could go so bad so quickly. You know that, right?" Lefi whispered. Evie nodded. "She could disown you. I mean, this woman has had her heart set on you finding a prince since before you were born. I'm not exactly what she had in mind."

"It doesn't matter what she had in mind. You're the one I choose. Regardless of whether or not she accepts that, I want her to know that I'm in love with you." Evie said, smiling softly. Meeting Evie's eyes, Lefi eventually nodded. "Thank you." the taller girl whispered, pulling her girlfriend into a kiss.

Three days later, Evie and Lefi were walking out to the car that Ben loaned them to go back to the Isle. The taller girl could see that her girlfriend was nervous and reached out to grab her hand as they sat in the car. "I want to thank you for doing this. I know my mom isn't your favorite person in the world." she said.

"That's true, but you are and this means a lot to you." Lefi replied. Evie smiled softly. "Maybe it'll be fine."

"I think we both know how this is going to go, but I like that you're thinking positively." Evie said, pressing a kiss to her cheek. Lefi chuckled as Evie turned on the car. Sending her girlfriend one last glance, Evie took a deep breath before driving the car.

"This is weird, right?" Evie mumbled as they covered the car.

"What?" Lefi asked

"Being back on the Isle." Looking around at their surroundings, Lefi nodded. "Let's just talk to my mom and then go back to Auradon."

"That sounds like the best plan I've ever heard." the blonde replied. Making their way through the Isle, Evie led her girlfriend to her childhood home. Stopping in front of the home, she looked back at Lefi. "We've made it this far, Eves. We might as well go in."

"You're right." the taller girl whispered. Biting her lip, Evie walked to the front door. "Do I knock?" Just then, the front door opened.

"I don't think you have to worry about that." Lefi mumbled, standing behind her girlfriend as the Evil Queen appeared. Seeing her mother for the first time in over a year, Evie smiled nervously.

"Hi, Mom." she said.

"Evie! What are you doing here?" the woman asked.

"I have something that I need to tell you. Can we come in?" Eyeing the blonde behind her daughter, the Evil Queen eventually nodded and allowed the pair inside. Making their way into the living room, Evie and Lefi sat down on the uncomfortable couch, making sure to leave space between them.

"What's going on?" the woman asked. Taking a deep breath, Evie looked at her mother.

"Lefi and I are dating. We have been since we were fourteen." Staring at the pair, the Evil Queen shook her head. "I know that you probably have a lot to say about this-"

"Actually, I just have one thing to say about this. This relationship is to end immediately." Lefi looked over at her girlfriend, who was absolutely furious.

"That's not happening." Evie declared. The Evil Queen arched an eyebrow, matching her daughter's expression. It was in that moment that Lefi realized just how much Evie looked like her mother. "We're not breaking up."

"Evie-"

"No, Mom. It's not happening, end of discussion." the blue-haired girl said, narrowing her eyes. The woman sighed.

"Evie, it's either me or her." At those words, Evie's heart sank and her face fell. After a few moments, she recovered and sat up straight.

"You're making me choose?" she asked softly. The Evil Queen nodded. "Mom, you really don't want me to do that."

"And why not?" the woman demanded.

"Because I will always choose her." Evie explained. Finally breaking eye contact with her mother, the girl stood up. "Come on, Lef. Let's go home." When Evie began walking toward the door, Lefi bit her lip and looked at the Evil Queen. "Lef. Let's go."

"Hold on." Sitting up straight, Lefi looked the woman in the eye. "You're just going to let her leave?"

"She's made her choice, I've made mine."

"So make a different one!" Lefi exclaimed, standing up. Evie watched in amazement as her girlfriend defended her. "Evie is amazing and if you let her walk out of her life, you're the biggest idiot on this island."

"Excuse me?" When her mother stood up, Evie walked over, ready to step in if necessary. "Who do you think you are?"

"Apparently the only person on this island that cares about Evie. She is the best person I know. When my mother banished me, Evie let me sleep in her room every night for ten years!" Lefi exclaimed. Realizing what she said, her eyes went wide and she looked at her girlfriend.

"You helped someone?" the woman asked, looking at her daughter. Evie paused in her motion of grabbing Lefi's arm to pull out of the woman's reach and turned to her mother. "You are such a disappointment." Biting her lip, Lefi looked up at the taller girl. She could tell that she was putting on a brave face.

"Evie, let's go." she whispered, gently pushing the girl. Looking back at the blonde, Evie nodded and turned away from her mother.

"Evie."

"Yes?"

"Don't come back. I never want to see you again." Closing her eyes, Evie nodded silently before walking out of the house with her girlfriend right behind her. When the door slammed behind them, Lefi reached into Evie's jacket pocket from behind.

"I'll drive." she whispered, resting her forehead on Evie's shoulder for a moment before walking back to the car.

"Why does your mom hate me so much?" Lefi asked as she sat on her girlfriend's bed. Evie sighed, looking over at the blonde.

"I think it has something to do with the fact that she knows your mom is Maleficent." she admitted.

"But my mom wants nothing to do with me." Lefi replied. The blue-haired girl shrugged. "Wow. Just imagine if she knew that we were dating."

"She'd have both of our heads." Evie commented. Lefi chuckled. "It's better that she doesn't know."

"Definitely." Lefi agreed. Smiling at her girlfriend, Evie leaned over and kissed her softly. "As long as you and I know, who cares if anyone else does?"

"Exactly." Evie whispered, pulling her close.
