Me: Hey guys! So yeah, I am BACK IN BUSINESS! YIPEE! To be honest, I had thought of putting the first part of this chapter into the previous chapter, but then I realized that ending it off there would be a better ending for the chapter than what I had originally planned.
Mist Muse: Is that why you started writing this chapter the exact same day you posted the previous chapter?
Me: Yep. I didn't want to forget my ideas and stop writing for almost a year again…
Stalagmite Muse: Well, at least you're finally learning.
Me: Thanks. …WAIT A MINUTE, WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "FINALLY"?!
Furytalon Muse: QUICK! DO THE DISCLAIMER!
Crystal: But I thought only Raineyes could do the disclaimer!
Shadowstalker: Just do it!
Ember: *Panicking* Ah…! AH…!
Me: ANSWER MY QUESTION-!
I do not own Wings of Fire. Wings of Fire is owned completely by Tui T. Sutherland.
"Good morning, Starflight! I was wondering if you had any scrolls on the Lost Continent in the library here. Do you?" Mist asked, stepping up to the front desk where the blind librarian was organizing scrolls. He lifted his head and smiled in her general direction, setting down some of his scrolls.
"Good morning, Mist. And yes, I think we have some scrolls about that legend. I'm glad to see you so interested in old Phyrrian lore, especially since Darkstalker coming back frightened quite a few of our students." The book-loving Nightwing then turned and opened one of the cabinets at his desk, feeling along the raised letters until he found the title he was looking for. "Here we are," He declared, running his talon along the indentation. "It should be on shelf eight, towards the top. If it's not, just let me know and I'll do my best to help you find it." Mist smiled, dipping her head in gratitude before remembering that Starflight couldn't see her.
"Thank you, Starflight." She said instead, feeling a bit guilty for forgetting his blindness. Mist then turned to Clementine, who looked as if she might vibrate out of her scales from the excitement. "Come on, Clementine! Let's go find that scroll." She chuckled, starting off towards shelf eight with Clementine trotting along beside her. Clementine seems so cheerful now… I wonder why she was so subdued a couple days ago? It couldn't have just been that she was sleepy before sun time… Mist then glanced at her friend and smiled warmly. Well, it doesn't matter now. I'm just glad she's back to her usual self.
"So, Mist," Clementine began. "What was up with that Nightwing in the food hall a couple days ago? How come he was so rude to everyone?" Mist stopped short in her tracks, swiveling her head to gaze at her friend with a spark of newfound concern.
"What are you talking about, Clementine? The only dragonet that he bullied was that IceWing and…" Mist started, before her eyes widened in realization. "Wait a minute… Are you telling me… That Inferno had been BULLYING YOU?! Is that what was happening that you didn't tell me about?!" She demanded, worry giving an edge to her voice as her scales shifted with pale oranges, reds, and greens. Clementine hung her head and shrugged. Why didn't she tell me about this earlier?! Does she not trust me anymore…? Have I been spending too much time with other dragons…? The thought of losing touch with one of her best friends filled the young Mistwing's heart with indescribable sorrow; however, luckily, Clementine shook her head quickly.
"Oh no, it's not like that, it's just… Well…" Clementine sighed, her normally bright, vibrant scales shifting to a blueish-gray color. "He kinda maybe sorta made fun of YOU… He said that you were a freak of a hybrid and that you probably didn't belong to ANY tribe… And of course, when I heard THAT little tidbit, I… Well, I lost it, really. I was just so angry at him, so I tried to stand up for you, but…" Clementine sighed again, fiddling with the corner of a scroll she had taken from the shelf. Mist gazed at her friend with sympathy, worry and affection and gratitude in her eyes as her scales waged war over which emotion should have the most dominance.
"But…?" She questioned softly, taking her friends talons and offering her a reassuring squeeze; instead, her attempt at comfort only seemed to depress Clementine even more, and her eyes- usually so bright and filled to the brim with joy and excitement -began to fill with tears.
"B-But then he insulted ME. He said that if I could only change my scales to pink, yellow, and orangish-red, then I wasn't really a TRUE Rainwing… And he said that if I ever told anyone else, especially the teachers, about what he had said, he would make my life worse than I could ever imagine…" She sulked, trying her best to hold back tears, causing a stab of guilt and sympathy to pierce the Mistwing princess's heart. I can't believe I doubted our friendship… She was threatened because she was trying to stand up for ME when I was being bullied! Mist frowned, wrapping a wing around Clementine and pulling her in for a hug, starting to tear up herself.
"I'm so sorry…" She murmured, trying her very best to cheer up the normally giddy dragonet. "You only got hurt because you were standing up for me… Three moons, Clementine, I really don't deserve to have such an amazing friend like you… Trust me when I say he WON'T get away with threatening you like that…" Morning Mist promised, which caused Clementine to burst out into sobs as she clutched her best friend.
"They most certainly will NOT." Starflight spoke up from behind the two friends, causing them both to jump: neither of the two had realized that the blinded Nightwing had been listening to their conversation. Bolts of green and orangish-purple (fear and guilt… Mist noted), swarmed through Clementine's scales, replacing the pink and yellow that had been starting to seep back in. She began to stammer, even her horns shaking from how much she was trembling. Poor Clementine... Mist thought to herself, trying to offer her terrified friend some support. If Inferno hears about this, then he'll think she told on him, and I don't disbelieve he'll follow through with his threat… Mist shivered, remembering her own encounter with Inferno earlier in the week. Clementine eventually spoke in coherent sentences, although she was obviously still terrified.
"B-B-But…! Y-You can't know! Inferno can't know that I told anyone! He's going to make my life worse than any dragon who's ever lived!" She stuttered, green now flowing throughout her scales. Starflight smiled knowingly.
"But you DIDN'T tell me," He explained, and Mist got the feeling that if it weren't for the burns that blinded him, his eyes would have been twinkling. "I overheard you telling Mist about it. And she didn't exactly give you a choice as to whether or not you could answer her; it WAS a heat of the moment breakdown… Don't worry, I'll make sure he doesn't do anything to harm you. EITHER of you." He added with a nod in Mist's direction. Clementine's scales began to fade into a calming blue color, meaning she was calming down if Mist was right. Sure enough, the tension in her friend's wings and shoulders dissolved, and she stopped trembling quite as much.
"Thank you, Starflight… You too, Mist." She replied softly, a grateful shade of pink starting to spread through her scales. Starflight nodded in understanding, a shaky yet nervous while at the same time incredibly relieved smile spreading across his bandaged face.
"No trouble at all; it IS my job to look after the students, after all. We do our best to promote peace between all the tribes here. But that's only half of the reason I came over here." He started before reaching into a satchel around his shoulder and pulling out a rather fancy looking scroll. "Here; this should be the scroll that has the Legend of the Lost Continent in it somewhere. If it's not, just let me know. And don't take off with it before checking it out!" He smiled, handing Mist the antique scroll.
"Thank you so much, Starflight. You have no idea how much of a help you've been." Mist exclaimed softly, dipping her head in gratitude, even though she knew he couldn't see. Hopefully he'll somehow be able to know really how thankful I am that he came over and offered to help… I'm honestly kind of scared of Inferno; he doesn't have to be so mean to everyone! She silently complained, sighing and heading towards one of the reading areas with Clementine. She could feel an irritated orange starting to seep through her scales, and did her best to repress it. But then again, it's not like I ever got the chance to get to know him; it's possible that he was just in a bad mood that day… If so, then… Oh three moons, I hope I didn't just make the situation worse… Mist sighed again, her brow creasing in worry as hints of mint green and purplish-orange started to speckle her otherwise icy blue scales.
"So, this scroll contains a bunch of legends about Phyrria, right?" Clementine mused, plopping down on one of the mossy pillows by the window. Mist nodded, coming to sit beside her. In response, Clementine tilted her head with a confused frown. "Then how can we be sure that this 'Legend of the Lost Continent' is in here, since it's all legends about Phyrria?" Mist smiled at her friend's curiosity; the two had always loved reading together and exchanging questions and riddles about their favorite scrolls.
"My guess is that they're all legends FROM Phyrria, as in, they were written or made here on the continent." The Mistwing princess reasoned, opening the scroll and rolling it towards the section about the Lost Continent. Once they reached that part of the scroll, she gasped in shock.
The very first picture was of the same castle from her painting.
