Chapter 16: "A Lot of Spice At The Dinner Table…"
"It's not what's on the table that matters, it's who's in the chairs." – W. S. Gilbert
A Big Brother's Love…
Eli – Olivia's other brother born a couple years before her. He came into the world a tad bit early according to the doctor who delivered him, but to Maya, his mother he was right on time. Rose, Lois, and Maya's own mother, Marla told her time and again before Eli's birth, he would be born before his due date.
"Make sure your packed honey at least four weeks before the baby is due. Women on our family tend to deliver early, with the baby being on the big side," Marla stated rubbing her baby bump.
"Momma I'm not due for another five weeks. I have time. The baby's room is ready. We are set," Maya assures her Mother, Father, and of course Rose and Lois.
All three ladies, Marla, Rose and Lois all place their hands on Maya's stomach. Maya, with her husband at her side watches curiously as the three "matriarch's" of the family rub their hands simultaneously over her stomach causing the baby to move inside.
"Ouch," Maya winches feeling her unborn child kicking and moving their arms wildly.
Marla, Rose and Lois, all exchange "a look" Maya is vividly aware of. "What?"
"This baby boy of yours will arrive in a little over three weeks Maya," Rose states conviction.
"It's a boy," Maya's husband states kneeling down off to the side. "The doctor has been saying for weeks it's a girl. How can you tell?"
"We just didn't get off the bus Dearie," Lois chastises. "I've been around many pregnant women in my day including your Momma," she voices staring into Marla's eyes. "I know Maya was a girl the minute we learned Marla was in the family way."
Maya shrugs it off but her mother kneels before her. "Your Aunties are never wrong," Marla voices kisses her daughter's stomach then her Son in Law's cheek. "If Rosie and Lois are telling you two it's a boy, then it is."
Maya and her adoring husband "Monty," she loving calls him – a nickname his wife gave him from his middle name, decided to play off they were having a boy still believing it was going to be a girl. They did not have any pink, neutral colors only where packed in her hospital bag. Unknown to the other they each bought a blue outfit, sneaking in into the baby's bag.
Then twenty three days later, Elijah "Eli" Samuel came into the world screaming his head off. Maya almost didn't make it to the hospital choosing to wait out her labor until her contractions where less than five minutes apart. She called Eli's father, who luckily was only working in his study. Maya had been in pain on and off all day but chose to wait until it was unbearable to tell Monty.
Monty came out periodically during the day to check on Maya fearing she was not feeling well. He noticed sighs she was in pain, but knew his wife had a high threshold for it. If it was false labor, he knew his wife did not want to be brought to the hospital for nothing. But still he took Maya's mothers, and her aunts warning of their first child's arrival seriously. He refused to leave her incase his wife went into labor.
Maya stuck it out as long as she could until the pain became unbearable. Monty came rushing to her when he heard a plate shatter in the kitchen. He ran to her, catching her in his arms. She arrived at the hospital with not a lot of time to spare. By the time the doctor examined her, Eli was crowning. "Don't push Maya," the doctor stated as his delivery scrubs were placed on his body.
"I'm not," Maya winced as her mother rushes into the room.
"You got this baby girl," Marla coos into her daughter's brow. "I know it hurts but when the doctor tells you to push, do as he says. I wanna see my first grandson."
The doctor quickly glances into Marla's eyes. "It's a boy. Trust me doc."
Maya's doctor turned his attention to the baby. "Okay Maya push," he commanded. "This baby is coming whether we are ready or not." In six pushes, the baby was delivered. "It's a…," the doctors eyes widen. "Boy!"
Monty kisses his wife before she can respond or even see the baby. "You gave me a son," he coos as he pulls away as Eli is placed on Maya's chest. She holds the baby for a few minutes until he's cleaned up. This moment is repeated almost exactly accept Maya and Monty took to heart Lois and Rose words this baby would be girl.
They didn't get there hopes up just in case it was another boy. Eli even a toddler was highly protective of his baby sister he swore was in Mommy's tummy. It was her job to protect her until she was born. Was out in the HIS world, Eli and her father would keep her safe.
The day Olivia was born Maya was only 3 weeks pregnant. Lois and Rose lucky where there helping Maya prepare the last bit of touches to her room. Her room was painted in neutral colors but there was slight feminine touch to it. If the baby was a boy, the room would still be fine. Marla was cooking in kitchen while Monty was a work.
Monty came home for lunch. As he entered the home, he heard, "MY WATER JUST BROKE!"
It took Marla and Monty a few seconds to realize what Maya had screamed. She walked out with Lois and Rose at her sides.
"Maya why did you wait so long," Marla scolded.
"Momma I was fine. I had no pains this time. The baby just broke my water," he winced as a contraction ripped through her body.
She was rushed into the hospital this time with a little time to spare. Rose, Lois, Marla were in the room this time with Monty and Eli to welcome Olivia Carolyn to their world. Before anyone else in the room could hold her, Eli pleaded to be the first. With the doctor's help, wrapped in a pink blanket, his baby sister was placed on his chest.
"I keep her safe Mommy," Eli cooed nuzzling his face to Olivia. "I got you baby girl. Big Bro here." It took Monty and the doctor pleads for him to give her to Maya. Even with Maya holding her baby daughter, Eli was ever watchful. For naps, he slept next to her either on the floor in her room on a mattress, and when she was older, he asked his parents to share her room just in case she needed him.
When Eli started school he cried because he would miss his baby sister. Maya assured him she would be fine. Then when she began school, he sat with her on the bus, showed her around the school, and brought her to meet her teacher. Every step of the way Eli was there for his sister. They fought of course, but he never stopped being there to look out for her.
This was especially the case when Olivia and Eli lost their mother. Olivia was twelve, Eli fourteen. She had to have her gall bladder removed. Maya's lab work showed no issues nor her vital signs before the surgery. The doctor had just completed the procedure and was closing. It was then heart rate bottomed out on the table without warning.
After numerous attempts at CPR with the use of the heart defibrillator, Maya's time of death was called. Every doctor, nurse and the anesthesiologist stood over her body with tears in their eyes. The doctor ripped off his mask, stepping to the side of the room to cry. She had been a patient of his for a long time, since she turned eighteen.
He waited as long as humanely possible before walking out into the waiting room to give Olivia, Eli, Monty, and of course the rest of the family the devastating news. It was as if every step he took occurred in slow motion as he approached her family.
"So how's our Mom Doc," Olivia questioned first.
"Did you remove her gallbladder," Eli inquired next.
"The cholecystectomy I'm assuming when went Doctor," Monty spoke next hoping to stop his children from speaking any further.
"We did remove Maya's gallbladder," the doctor stated. Olivia's Grandfather came to stand behind his Grandchildren. He knew something was wrong. Really wrong. He could see IT in the doctor's eyes and tear stained cheeks. He may have cleaned his face but redness in his eyes gives it away.
"So when can we see her," Monty questions. "Is she in recovery?" Maya's father touches his arm. He glances into his father in laws eyes. "I know she needs to rest and wake up Dad Pop but the kids and I would like to be with her when she opens her eyes. Is that possible?" There's silence. "What's wrong?"
"Why don't we have a seat," the doctor instructs the family. He sits in front of Maya's husband. He exhales deeply.
"When will Momma open her eyes," Olivia questions. A tear slips out. Eli draws his sister close along with their Grandfather. Monty's parents are at his side. They too suspect all is not well.
"Doctor when can I see my wife and take her home?"
The tears come down the doctor's face in waves. Eli is the first to speak. "We can see our Mom can see. She's gone."
Olivia and Eli's father stands up. "What do you mean she's gone? Where did she go," he growls. "I want to see my wife." The doctor reaches for his hand calling his first name. He staggers backwards. Olivia and Eli grasp onto their father. Olivia clings to him for dear life sending him into a chair. Olivia is curled into his lap to shield herself from the news. Eli clings to his Grandfather.
"You have to say it Doctor," Maya's father instructs.
He offers him his handkerchief. He kneels in front of "I'm sorry but we lost Maya on the table."
"NO," her husband screams out.
"NO," Olivia squeals with Eli. The doctor steps back allowing them to cry for a few moments. Joseph stays with Monty, Olivia and Eli. With only a look exchanged between them, Monty's father walks over to the doctor asking him t0 explain what happened in the operating room. After he gather's himself once speaking to the doctor he rushes over to his son and grandchildren.
"Son," Monty's father voices. "The surgery went well. They were almost finished when her heart stopped. The doctor and nurses tried to resuscitate Maya but they couldn't get her heart restarted. I'm so sorry."
"Daddy is Momma's in heaven now," Olivia questions whimpering into her Father's chest.
He only nods. "I can't," he croaks standing up abruptly. He leaves Olivia and Eli with his parents and Father in law waltzing up to the doctor. "So help me God if you did something to cause my wife's death. I will take this hospital to court. You will lose your license." His mother screams out his full name. He ignores her. "I will never allow anyone in my family to be treated in this hospital again."
Monty's rushes into a nearby empty conference room fully crying it out. Over an hour passes before anyone dares enter the room. His mother steps to her son sitting with him on the floor. She calls his name softly. His eyes lift to meet hers. "Mom?"
"It will be all right," she sniffles. "We'll get through this as a family. It's what Maya would want." He barely responds.
"Eli and Olivia will grow up without a mother," he creaks. "How can I raise those two alone?"
"You won't be alone Darling," Rose and Lois step into the room. Maya's father called the first chance he had after hearing the news. They drove to the hospital as quick as possible. Olivia and Eli saw them come in and rush into their arms with tears streaming down their faces. Rose and Lois cuddled and nestled them both tightly then once they were calm, they went on the search for Monty.
While her Auntie Rose and Lois tended Olivia's father, Eli held his sister close to his heart. "Pop-Pop," he voiced to his Mother's father. With assistance, Olivia was brought into a spare room where she sat with her other grandparents, Pop-Pop, until her father arrived.
"Daddy," she whimpered seeing the sad look in his eyes. "Did you see Momma?" He nods. "Can we?"
"No," he snaps. Her father never lashes out towards her. Monty walks towards his daughter. "I don't want your last memory to be of your Momma here – in this place. The nice people from the funeral home will come and get her. You'll see her when she's all fixed up nice."
Olivia began to cry wanting to see her mother. "Libby," Eli coos. "The place where Mom is going will make her look like she's only sleeping. You don't want to see her right now all right." Eli has never been to wake. When they lost their Marla, their Grandmother, they only attended the mass not her viewing. Their parents felt they were too young.
Olivia does not argue. A few days later, it was Maya's funeral. With help from Rose and Lois, Olivia helped pick out a dress for her mother to wear. Monty picked out everything else. The days leading up to the burial he was numb. He barely ate, or slept. Eli and Olivia slept on Maya's side of the bed needing to be close to their mother.
The day of her funeral, Olivia held it in even when she saw and said goodbye to her mother after all the other visitors left the funeral home. Monty stood with his children allowing them to speak to their mother one final time. He barely uttered a word to her in front of anyone, but it was heard after her casket was closed he broke down. The children were already in the limo waiting.
Monty gradually pulled away from everyone including his children. His new focus was on politics. Eli watched his father change from the loving- doting father he was to the monster he is now. The light their mother placed in him, died with her. When he remarried their step-mother they saw glimpses of his former self but seldom.
Eli made a promise to his mother, the day of her funeral. "I promise to take care and watch over Livy Momma. I swear it. No man or woman will hurt, or take advantage of her. Cradle to grave you have my word I'll protect her and watch over her."
It was a vow he kept to this very day. Eli was there for her in every milestone. He was her biggest cheerleader. Still is. Eli Samuel is the man in her life besides Max who he willingly shares her with. He has no choice too. He can dance whatsoever and has no inclining to start lesson, despite his sister's pleads. He would protect her from the Leader of the Free World if he had too.
Which he had no idea who he would be meeting…
/
Her Protector…
"Lib's," Eli calls out to her.
She's lost in the sounds coming from Rose and Lois apartment. Nina and Bells are giggling at someone. It sounds as if her two aunts are messing with Abby and Andrew, or maybe even Fitz.
"Libby," Eli utters a second time. He too hears all the commotion inside. "What's going on in there? Are Auntie Rose and Lois watching TV?"
"Not exactly," she utters listening to Fitz remind his girls to behave.
Eli squints hearing his voice. He recognizes the voice but cannot figure what from. Then he hears Abby. "I didn't know Abby was here. I haven't seen her forever. Since before she became the White House Chief of Staff." He steps forward opening his arms to hug his baby sister who's he's not seen in sometime.
The moment he encroaches into her personal space, Tom steps forward. "Yo White-boy back it up," he snaps.
"ELI," Olivia scoffs. "This is Tom."
"Tom huh," he nods.
"I'm going to ask you to keep your distance from Miss Pope Sir," Tom utters stepping between Olivia and Eli. "I need to make sure you are cleared to be here."
"What do you mean keep my distance? Who in hell do you think you are," he growls loudly. "THIS IS MY FUCKING SISTER. She is safer around me then your ass," Eli bellows. Tom pushes his jacket to the side showing Eli his side arm. Eli jumps back. "HOLY SHIT LIV THIS GUY IS PACKING!"
"Tom stand down it's all right. Like I said Eli is my older and apparent idiotic brother," she teases.
"You got a license for that," Eli growls. "Especially since you're around my baby sister." Then he realizes something. "Libby are you dating this guy?"
"No," she snickers. She glances to Tom. "Tom can we please…."
"Sure Miss Pope," he utters unlocking her door. Eli stands there dumbfounded. As she steps inside with his brother she whispers.
"Please tell…," he stops her. He nods. As he walks to Rose and Lois door. "Tom no one enters my apartment until I come out. Ok?"
"As you wish Miss Pope," Tom speaks with a smile. Olivia closes her door. "Eli," she sighs as he stands before her with his arms crossed. She waltzes to him for a hug. He cannot deny her. "I miss you Ellie," she chastises. He laughs. Olivia is the only person alive who is allowed to call him Ellie.
"I missed you more Little Lib's," he snickers squeezing her tighter.
She pulls back to stare into her brother's eyes. He hears voices out in the hallway.
"Tom where's Liv," Fitz questions not seeing Olivia.
"In her apartment with her brother," Tom explains. "She'll be out in few," he winks.
Fit steps closer to Tom, but he does not permit him to approach Olivia's door. "I can assure you she is fine. Go inside I got this." Fitz eyes him curiously.
Tom whispers. "Very protective older brother. Prepare yourself."
"Ah. Got it," Fitz sniggers then steps back inside Rose and Lois apartment. Fitz heard from Abby the depths of Eli's devotion to his younger sister. But he is no match for Fitz. Her brother will step aside. Fitz will be a part of her life. He's not letting her walk away.
Eli hears the exchange but still cannot make out who is was. Olivia eyes narrow. "What?"
"Please tell me you are not dating the guy from the Men in Black out there," he grouses.
Olivia giggles. "No I am definitely not dating Tom. He's not my type," she blushes knowing full well who her type is. Even if she does not want to full admit to herself.
"Then what's with the freaking gun Sis…," Eli pries. "Is he a cop, bodyguard…" then he stops. "He's Secret Service."
"Elijah?" The use of his full name is confirmation of his suspicions. Olivia refuses to panic in front of him.
"I heard Abby's voice Libby. She's still President Grant's Chief of Staff right?" Olivia releases an audible sigh. "I know she has agents. I haven't seen her in a while but she's here so it makes sense for the agents to be here too."
"Yes Abby is here. Auntie Lois and Rose invited her to dinner tonight. They knew I'd need her and it's…," now she's on the verge of tears. He sits on the couch. Eli taps his lap for Olivia. "Aren't we a little big for you to hold me like that?"
"Not unless you put on one hundred pounds since the last time I saw yah," he teases. She crosses her arms. "Come on." She exhales. "Look I'm your freaking big brother. At least sit next to me so I can hold you if you need to cry. That's why I'm here Libby because today is the…,"
"Anniversary of Mom's death," she whimpers.
"Yah," he sniffles. "I know we haven't spoken since the competition began but you didn't really think I would not be here tonight. Did you go and visit Mom yet?"
"No." Eli's eyes raise. Olivia has never missed visiting the grave site on the day they lost their mother. Even when they were children they went. "I had a busy morning and last minute dance lesson today. I couldn't change it Eli."
He does not question her motives. "Well I'm here now. I've always shown up for you no matter where I am or how far." He's traveled across the country to be with her on this day of days.
"But dinner," she points towards the door.
"I texted Auntie Rosie…she has it covered," Eli assures her. "I promised Mom I'd look out of you. I'm not bound to stop now." She walks directly in his arms then nestles into his chest. A few tears stream down her face. She has not even told Fitz, or the girls why today has been so hard for her. "That's my girl," Eli coos hugging Olivia tightly. "I love yah Baby Sister."
"I'm not a baby any more you Ellie," she half-heartedly reminds him.
"Don't I know it," he huffs. "I was there the first time you screamed for Auntie Rose because you thought you were bleeding to death out of your va-jay-jay."
"ELIJAH," she shoves him away from her and onto the floor. The two siblings break out into laughter. "You are such a child."
He smiles. He sits on the floor staring at his sister. Behind Olivia he notices a picture of her teaching to dance two young girls, about the same age on her piano. He raises himself up off the floor walking to the piano to retrieve it. Her eyes widen realizing it is Nina and Bells. They gave it to her at their second lesson. It's from their first lesson where they were having fun with her and Max.
"Liv are these students of yours?" She nods.
"Yes. This is from our first lesson. Cyrus or James must have taken it," she replies wistfully.
"I didn't know you decided to take on more students with the competition and all." He studies the photo longer.
"I did it as a favor," she snorts. She could still kill Abby for it but it brought Fitz into her life.
"Wait. They look oddly familiar. We're have I seen then before," he questions staring at Cristina and Isabelle's profiles in the photo.
"Well you should," Nina and Bells step into her apartment. Eli turns to the twins standing in Olivia's doorway. "We are on TV with our Dad all the time," Nina explains without a care in the World. Eli glances between Olivia and the twins as they hug his sister.
"Girls what are you," she glances behind her searching for Fitz. She is not ready for him to meet her brother yet.
"Livy your Aunts sent us over," Cristina explains as they run into her arms. She then notices Eli staring at them. "And you are," she utters in her best Olivia Pope voice.
"Elijah Samuel," he introduces himself. He still has not figured out who these two young girls are hugging his sister. "And you two ladies are…,"
"Cristina Grant."
"Isabelle Grant."
"Grant," her brother gasps. It hits him. "Liv these are The President's twin daughters! You are their teacher." The twins giggle.
"Yes," she rushes to him. Her hand covers his mouth preventing him from speaking. "Abby asked me to be their teacher. They are her Godchildren. You cannot tell a soul Eli. Swear it!" Nina is ready to spill the beans but Bells stops her along with a stern look from Tom coming into the room. He nods seeing the fear of their father in her eyes.
"My, you aren't too bright are yah," Cristina sarcastically comments staring directly into Eli's eyes.
"Cristina," Olivia scolds. "Remember your manners young lady." Eli is quite shocked to hear her reprimand the President's daughter. "Apologize to my brother." Nina complies instantly. But Olivia winks a few seconds later letting her know she is partially correct in her impression. Eli can be the sharpest tool in the shed or dullest.
Isabelle wraps herself around Olivia's waist, holding her close. She is so much like her father. Always wanting to be wrapped in Olivia's arms. Nina too but not as much. Olivia then realizes this is the first time the twins have been in her apartment. "It's okay girls. You can look around if you want but do not touch anything unless you ask. Stay in these rooms where I can see you."
Nina grins. She walks around the room taking in everything. She can easily see why her father spent so much time here earlier. It warm, inviting, feels like home. Nina sneaks a peek down the hallway noting three open doors. She grins realizing she has an extra bedroom. While waltzes around the room, Isabelle continues to hold onto Olivia.
"Bells you can look with your sister while I talk to my brother. Shortly we'll go back over to my aunts."
"No I'm good here with you," she voices staring at her brother. Eli shifts his weight under the young girls eyes all of sudden feeling open and exposed. He feels as if he's glancing directly into the President's eyes.
"What?"
"You have your Dad's eyes young lady," Eli comments.
"Thank you," Bells blushes. "Everyone tells me that. Nina has our Mom's." She rests her head on Olivia's torso. Her head is just under her breasts. Her eyes meet Olivia's as her phone receives a text message from Fitz. He's checking to see how long she'll be. A soft smile appears on her face as she responds.
She leans down. Bells whispers. "Daddy is getting itchy. He misses you." Olivia blushes.
"So who was the text from Sis," Eli teases. "Cuz whomever it was made you blush." Nina and Bells both giggle. Olivia does not answer him. "So the twins are here with Abby for dinner at Rose and Lois right?"
"Yes," all three answer in sync.
Eli eyes raise. If it was just Abby here there would not be as many agents.
"Our aunt's ladies are the best cooks," he replies as his stomach growls. "So how long has my sister been teaching you?"
"We've had a few lessons with Livy. Right," Nina responds happily. "She's the best teacher ever."
"You're just saying that because you have the hots for Max," Bells chastises. Nina blushes. "And you like his buns."
"I DO NOT," Nina growls. Her hands are now on her hips. "I've never had his homemade rolls before."
Olivia bites her lip to prevent herself from laughing. "That is not the buns I meant you Nin-nee," Bells taps her behind.
"BELLIE," Nina cackles as her cheeks turn bright pink. But then she looks up at Olivia. "Liv Max does have a nice butt right."
"Ah." She cannot answer. It's true. He has a gorgeous body. Any woman would be lucky to have him but he's not for her. Since Fitz entered her life, there is only man for her now. She has not fully admitted to herself, but since he "caught her" literally and figuratively, she's been falling more for him each time she sees and the more she is in his presence.
"No I bet Liv likes Daddy's better," Nina announces in a fit of giggles.
Olivia mouth drops open not believing her comment. "You have been with Abby way to long my dear. Come one let's get you back over to my Aunt's house. I'll be right there." The girls begin to protest but Olivia promises she'll be their faster than Abby can drop a carrot cake coming out of the oven. Of course they laugh then leave her apartment.
Olivia speaks to her brother warning him not to tell anyone about her teaching the girls. "Eli you cannot tell a soul I'm their teacher." He opens his mouth to assure her but she stops him. "Pinky promise over the last scoop of ice cream promise. Dad cannot find out. I haven't even told our Step-Mom yet."
"You know she'll be on your side. She calls once a week to check up on me. I know she phones you but it always goes to voicemail." Olivia's eyes fall to the floor. "She's not trying to replace Mom Libs. But she loves us both very much."
"I never said she was Eli," she hisses. "I keep my distance because of Dad."
"Call her back Libs. You know she watches you dance." Olivia's eyes widen. "She does not attend the competition but she watches. She hoping you and Max win."
Olivia smiles hesitantly. "Eli swear you won't tell a soul."
"I won't tell Lib. I got your back," he assures her standing in front of her. His sister has done everything possible to stay away from the world of politics. This is out of the norm but the girls seem to have taken to her. And if it makes her happy then he's all for it and on her side. "Now can we go eat now? Auntie Rose and Lois set a place for me."
/
New Place at the Dinner Table…
Her eyes widen. "You eating dinner with us." She staggers backwards into her couch. Eli is at her side.
"Um yah of course. Did you think Auntie Rose and Lois would let me leave and not feed me?" Now she feels ill. "Sis what's wrong?"
"Eli I think I need to sit," she stammers. He assists her to the sofa. He sits with her. She parched, warm, and in need of cold drink of ice water. The color is draining from her face fearing what will happen if Eli and Fitz meet. If they hate each other? Wait they can't hate each other. Her eyes meet his as her head falls back onto the couch.
"Did you eat today?" She nods but it wasn't much. Fitz distracted her most of the day. "I'm going to get you some ice water and a small snickers bar okay?" She smiles. "Do not get up without me all right?" He kisses her brow then trots off to the kitchen.
She texts Abby. "Abby need help?"
Abby excuses herself from the conversation she's in with Andrew, Lois and Rose. Fitz and the twins are decorating cookies.
Abby: What? Why?
OP: My brother is still here.
Abby: Okay…
OP: He's coming to dinner.
Abby: I know silly. Your aunts told me already.
OP: Abby WHO is over there with you? Refresh my memory besides my aunts.
Abby: Nina, Bells, Andrew and Fitz. Your brother and Fitz will get along fine Liv. Really. They were bound to meet sooner or later.
OP: ABBY, who are Fitz and Andrew?
Abby: (She thinks about Olivia's question.) Andrew is the Vice – President. Fitz is the President of the United…SHIT!)
OP: See…
It's all she manages to send back before her brother calls out to her. "Liv where the hell is the ice?"
She chuckles. "In the freezer you moron," she hollers behind her. "Where do you think I keep it in the oven?"
"No shit Ollie." Eli screams back. "I am looking there. I don't see any. I think your ice machine is jammed." She yells back where a spare tray is hiding in the back of the freezer. He calls out that he's found.
"He's such an idiot," Olivia mutters to herself.
"Well I can be," Fitz utters after opening her door. Her eyes widen.
"FUCK ME," she gasps ready to leap off the couch to scoot him out of her apartment before Eli sees him.
"Well if that's what you really want," Fitz teases wiggling his eyes. She breathing changes. "Livy," he's too her in seconds watching her gasp for air. "What's wrong?" He kneeling before with fear in his eyes. His hands cup her face. "Liv?"
"I'm fine."
"Bull shit you are not," he snaps. He's now next to her on the couch. She was perfectly fine, healthy when she left her aunts apartment to speak to whomever it was outside the door. He only learned it was her older brother when Nina and Bells came back singing like "song birds" of his arrival and Olivia having a nice long chat with him.
"I'm just having a minor panic attack," she admits. He squints.
"Please do not worry about your brother and I," he mutters lifting her face to meet his.
"He's a tad bit overprotective," she whispers now cradling his cheek in her hand.
"As am I," he coos placing his free hand on her stomach. "I'll just have to give him a run for his money," he states if he has to go to war for her he will. "I can handle Eli," Fitz speaks his name. Olivia eyes widen. She's never met a man willingly to get into a fight over her. "I got this," his lips brush over her forehead.
"But…," she protests as his fingers caress her lips softly.
"It's not his job to look out for you anymore Livy," Fitz states protectively. Her eyes widen. He means it. It does not matter to Fitz if they are technically not a couple, in HIS MIND, she has his heart. His heart tells him what he needs to know. They are a "couple."
"You don't have to," she whispers hearing her brother in the kitchen.
"Yah well tough rocks," he boasts. "I caught you when you fell if you can recall," a smirk grows on his face. "I'm going to continue to catch you even in front of Eli. Now what do you need," he stresses wrapping a protective arm around her. His face is over hers as she struggles to catch her breath. "Liv?" She leans into him. The sides of their heads press against the other.
"I need," she stammers breathing in HIS scent. Already she is beginning to relax in Fitz's arms. It is not necessary to speak the words. Fitz knows. She needs him. He's here. And not going anywhere. A protective older brother does not scare him. No one can cause him to leave her side, especiallyy
"Lib here is your glass of…," he utters but stops seeing the back of a man's head. "Who in the heck are you?" Olivia senses the tension in Fitz's body. They lock eyes.
"He's my brother," she mouths.
"I know," Fitz smiles. His smile is enough to reassure her that Fitz can handle her brother.
"So who is…," Eli stops as Fitz stands. His mouth falls open. "President Grant," he stammers noting his arms around his baby sister.
"Yes." He smirks. Olivia attempts stand to formally introduce them. He lifts her off the couch. Eli's eyes widen observing Fitz place a kiss on her brow. Olivia swallows hard. Fitz outstretches his hand with Olivia nestled in his side. "You must be Olivia's brother. Eli I presume."
They shake with Eli's mouth hanging open. "Yes Sir," he mutters clearly frazzled by this turn of events. "Lib?"
She smiles at Fitz. He releases her to walk to her brother. "I'm teaching his daughter's Eli."
"I'm aware," Eli's eyes narrow on The President and his sister. They chit chat briefly about the girls. He notes her smile with him near. How his hand is placed in the middle of her back keeping her calm. They finish each other sentences. She blushes at his compliments.
"I'm also her student. Your sister is teaching me for the State Dinner," Fitz admits without a care in the World. Fitz will not hide their professional relationship and budding romantic one. "I'm hoping she'll accompany me as my date." Eli's mouth falls open. "Don't worry she's hasn't said yes – yet. I'm still working my magic."
"Fitz," she playfully pokes his side as her cheeks become warm. He grasps her hand before she can remove it from his body. He nuzzles his face into her open palm. Fitz is lost in her gaze forgetting her brother is in the room. Eli is shocked at what he's witnessing.
How the Leader of the Free World eyes sparkle as he gazes into Olivia's brown eyes. Eli releases a labored sigh. "Are you dating my sister President Grant?"
"Elijah," she warns. "Aunt Lois and Rose are waiting. This can wait. Our aunts have held up dinner long enough."
"No Livy it is fine. He's your brother and has the right to ask. After all he did ask Tom," Fitz replies linking their hands together. He lifts Olivia's hand to his lips placing a kiss on the top of her hand. "I am not her boyfriend but I hope to be. But as far as you and I are concerned, man to man," Fitz addresses Eli, "in my heart she's my girlfriend, even if Livy won't allow our relationship to cross that line as of yet."
"I see," Eli suspiciously answers.
"Okay that's enough you two," she faces Fitz who cannot help the smile on his face. She rolls her eyes. "Rose and Lois are waiting on us so let's go."
All three walk next door for dinner. Luckily for all, Rose and Lois were able to keep dinner on hold until Olivia was able to join them with Fitz and Eli. Rose and Lois notice Eli and rush to them. They pinch his cheeks causing him to blush horribly. "Dang child you skinny. All you men in here are," Lois announces.
"Well let's eat then Rose," Lois points to the table. "All of these grown men need meat on their bones to get some extra cushion on their bottoms," she eyes up Fitz and Andrew. "But it is a nice view boys."
"Auntie Lois," Olivia chastises.
"Pumpkin I may be an old lady but I sure as hell ain't dead," Lois winks then wiggles her eyes at both Fitz and Andrew. With an overdramatic eye roll Olivia pleads with both her aunts to sit down for the meal. Fitz is next to Olivia. Abby next to Andrew. Isabelle claimed the other seat next to Olivia before Eli could. Cristina sits next to Abby. Rose and Lois sit on opposite ends. Eli is placed across from Fitz.
With a gentle nudge from Rose, Andrew is asked to say "Grace." He does so without any trouble and they enjoy nice meal. Rose and Lois made Southern Fried Chicken, collard greens, sweet potato casserole, sweet corn bread, and turnips.
The turnips pass by Olivia and her nose crinkles. "Still after all these years Child you won't eat them," Lois teases.
"Nope," Olivia grumbles. Her entire body shivers. Fitz chuckles.
"Lib's only ate our Momma's," Eli announces. "Right?"
Olivia nods. "She did make the best."
Rose and Lois make no qualms about asking Fitz how his first dancing lesson went with Olivia earlier at the White House. Eli practically chokes on his food hearing that his sister actually went to the White House.
"My baby sister went to the White House willingly," Eli questions rather loudly.
"She ain't no baby any more Elijah," Rose warns. "Our Livy is a grown ass strong woman who's caught the eye of a very sexy man." She winks at Fitz. He continues to chew his food to stop himself from laughing.
"Auntie Rosie," Olivia chastises hiding behind her napkin.
"What child? Your dear Auntie Lois and I told you this man is Sex on Legs," Rose blurts out. Her comment causes Fitz to spit out his drink sending the sweet tea across the table. Andrew stifles at laugh but one look at Abby and he's a goner.
"Daddy you made a mess," Nina scolds Fitz failing miserably to not giggle.
"You got Livy's brother all wet," Bells snickers.
"I am so sorry," Fitz mutters locking eyes with Eli.
"It's all right Sir. I'm wash and wear. I only got a light spray," Eli offers nicely. "Lib's got me a lot worse when she was little." Olivia nods bashfully. He excuses himself to clean up in the bathroom while Olivia rushes to check on him.
"Eli you all right," she knocks on the door.
"Yes I'm fine Sis. It's only a little tea," he opens the door. "It was only a light spray. Go back to your boyfriend – The President," he hisses.
He begins to turn away from her but she grabs his face to prevent it. "Elijah you are out of line. He is NOT my boyfriend and you know it."
He stands in front of her towering over her body. He's not as tall as Fitz. Only a foot shorter. "Oh no. Well that's not the impression I'm getting." Olivia hears her name being called. "Go before he sends the Secret Service looking for you. From what I can tell already, it appears you belong to him You best pray Dad does not find out about you and HIM," he seethes.
The implication of his comments causes her blood to boil. "1. You do NOT have the right to mention THAT MAN to me," she snaps. "He does not control me." Eli huffs knowing it's not true. "2. Fitz does not control me. He never will. You don't even know him Eli. Give him a chance."
"You are going to get hurt." He steps to her. "Fitzgerald Grant will break your heart."
She steps into his space, causing Eli to back into a wall. There is a fire in her eyes he's never witnessed before. "Fitz is a great man Eli. He's good, kind, a great father – leader." His crosses his arms over his chest. "He caught me Eli. I mean REALLY caught me."
He has no idea what she is talking about. "Whatever."
Eli turns away from Olivia to wash his hands. "This is not over," she hisses leaning over his hands to gaze into his eyes.
"You got that right. I never thought I see the day of you being stupid," he sneers just under his breath.
She stops inches from Eli's face. "I am many things Eli. But stupid is not one of them," she huffs. "We are done."
"Damn straight we are…"
"Is everything all right," Fitz announces making his presence known. Olivia release a labored sigh unsure of how much he overheard. Eli steps back into the bathroom closing the door. She leans her head against it ready to implode until Fitz's hand is on her back. "Liv?" He hears her sniffling. "Hey…," he coos closing the distance between them.
She lifts her face to meet his before taking his hand then walking him into a nearby bedroom. She leaves the door open. Olivia drops his hand the minute they cross into the room. She does not want Fitz to see her break down and cry. She's been on the verge of tears all day because of the Mother's death. Now on top of things her brother is being an ass.
Fitz steps behind her standing there with his hands at his side. The warmth of his body begins to envelope her, drawing her into his frame. All Fitz aches to do is make HER better.
"Liv," she shutters feeling his breath on her body. The urge to hold and never let her go is almost unbearable. "What can I do? Do you want me to leave?"
She spins to face him. "No," she whimpers. "Never."
He lifts his hand to caress his face with upper top section of his fingers. All she can do is look in his eyes. "What is it?"
"I lost my Mom today," she voices out loud making it real. His eyes water with unleashed tears.
"Once Upon a December," he murmurs. "You were dancing it for her." A sad but soft smile appears on her face. "I'll go to her grave with you the moment we are finished dinner." Her breath catches at his words.
"But?"
"My safety. The agents. I will make THIS happen. I am going to be with you Olivia. I cannot bare you going alone. You need me so I'll be there," he assures her kissing her forehead. Her legs almost falter giving herself the permission to melt into him.
She places her hands on his upper arms. "Can I keep you?" Her words warm places within him that have not stirred in a long time.
"As long as you promise not to give me up," he counters cradling her face. He hears Eli leave the bathroom and join everyone at the table.
"Eli?"
"He's fine. He's just…,"
"Figured it out that I'm here to stay and I'm NOT going to be walking away from you," her mouth drops open not only at his words but his admission. "I'm here to stay Liv. And I do not care who I have to say it too. I meant it." His hands cup both her cheeks. His thumbs wipe away the tears threatening to spill out of her eyes. "I caught you. I plan on keeping you."
She tilts her head to gaze into his shimmering blues. This man is perfect. "Fitz?"
"No tell me," he pauses. "What. Do. You. Need?"
"You." Her single word response confuses him briefly until she leaps into his arms. He catches with ease. She buries her face into his neck allowing her tears to fall. He walks them to a nearby chair and holds her in his lap permitting her to cry. He lifts his eyes to see Rose at the door.
"Stay," she mouths.
Fitz smiles then closes his eyes nuzzling his face into Olivia's hair. It seems like hours but only minutes pass when she lifts her head to meet Fitz's warm blue eyes. She kisses his lips tenderly. His arms snake around drawing her close. Her open mouth kisses are tantalizing. He aches for more. Here is not the time or place.
Their lips separate. "What was that for," he questions.
"For seeing me and being here tonight." Fitz smiles.
"It's not about what's on the table Livy. It's about who is here. And we are all here for you." She begins to lift off his lap but he stops her. "One more," he wiggles his eyes tapping his lips.
"Shameless," she teases. But Fitz closes the distance between their faces kissing her again. He'll never tire of kissing her. Feeling her lips pressed against his own. Knowing her tongue is just inside waiting to twirl with his in a sensual dance. Each kiss he aches for it to be longer. He separates their lips with a pop. She cannot only roll her eyes.
She pushes up from his lap, then he stands with her. They leave the room with his nestled into his side with his arm wrapped around her. She's literally floats out of the room pressed up against his side.
"Everything all right," Rose questions.
"Yes Aunt Rose." She locks eyes with Eli before sitting down next to Fitz to finish the meal. The siblings talk but not to each other. Fitz instantly notices his cold eyes staring at Olivia and every so often a snarky comment. By the time the meal is over he's had enough. Olivia and Abby offer to clean up the kitchen with the twins.
Fitz, Andrew, and Eli help Rose and Lois with dessert. They are cordial to each other but Eli only speaks to him IF he's spoken to first. Eli speaks to Abby, Nina, Isabelle, Rose and Lois. He will talk to Fitz, hold a pleasant conversation. But behind the words, his eyes Fitz is certain, Eli keeping his mouth closed out of respect for Olivia and their aunts.
From the kitchen, Olivia emerges with dessert. It is then she remembers she forgot the whipped cream. "Give me your key's Lib's. I'll go get it," Eli suggests. She hands it over. "By the way is it…,"
She walks over to him. "It WILL be Mom's as soon as you bring it over here. Do not forget any of the ingredients Eli. It's all there. I still have to whip it up."
"I got it," he grumbles. He quickly steps out of the apartment, and into Olivia's. "Where in hell did she put it," he utters. He opens her refrigerator locates all the ingredients then the items on counter. He uses a basket then heads out of the kitchen. As he steps out of the kitchen he hears her front door open. "I told you Lib I'd get it."
"It's not Olivia," Fitz utters standing between Eli and the front door. Eli stops. They lock eyes. "Tom," he steps behind Fitz. "Please bring this to Olivia. Explain to her I'll be there shortly. Her brother and I have to discuss a few things."
"We have nothing to discuss Mr. President," Eli snaps ready to walk away from Fitz. Tom stands in front of him. "Yes?"
"Hand it over Sir," Tom commands.
"And if I don't. What will you do shoot me," Eli snips.
"No but I'll see to it you'll never see your sister again," Fitz boldly states walking closer to Eli and Tom.
"My sister wouldn't allow it."
"Oh no. Try me," Fitz hisses. Eli wisely decides not to push the issue. He hands over the ingredients. Tom strolls out of the apartment leaving Fitz and Eli alone. "Take a seat."
"No."
Fitz walks up to him. He stands inches away from him. "Sit down." Eli crosses his arm defiantly. "Fine," he walks off. He sits on Olivia's chair. "We'll start talking man to man the moment you sit. I can wait. I have all the time in the world. Can you?"
Eli eyes raise. He stands there permitting the tension to grow between them. You can hear a pin drop from the other side of the street it's so quiet. Finally Eli sits in a chair across the room from Fitz.
"Now what Mr. President. Are you going to tell me how much you care for my sister that's she more important than the world?"
"Nope."
"Figures…," he scoffs.
Fitz leans forward. "Olivia Pope is MY World."

TBC…
Yes my darlings I am just going to leave this here. I hope this chapter was well worth the extremely long wait. I apologize. I did not intend for it to happen but "life" of course gets in the way.
Eli and Fitz of course "have met" and are about to have the "man to man" talk about Olivia. Both men only want what (who) is best for her. Eli has been protecting her since the loss of their mother, Maya, which you learned more about this chapter.
I know you are all curious WHO is Eli and Olivia's father? Sorry not dropping those crumbs as of yet. But will happen, just not yet.
I'm eager to hear your thoughts…
Have a great rest of your weekend and thank you for reading.
