I know Seattle is about a 45 hour drive to New Jersey, but since this is the future, let's imagine that all interstate highways have a police lane or high speed vehicle lane. The speed limit would be possibly 90 or 100 miles per hour and the interstate highways would be in straighter lines. So let's imagine the road trip was maybe 20 hours. Just use your imagination, please.
Anyways, please enjoy after I left you on a cliff hanger. Sorry.
EMILY POV
I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder and then slammed against the ground.
I looked up to see Dorian on top of me.
"Are you alright?" He asked, concerned.
"I just got hit by a freight train, but I'm fine." I moved my shoulder in circles.
"Sorry." Dorian got off of me and helped me up.
I could see John trying to confront the man who shot at us. He was holding up his gun, pulling out his badge. The man was trying to reload his shotgun as quickly as possible.
Dorian had walked up to the man quietly and quickly disarmed him. Dorian pointed the shotgun at the man. "Don't do anything you'll regret." Dorian suggested.
The man seem astonished and scared. I raised my weapon and walked closer so that I was one step behind John and Dorian.
The man held up his hands. "Who are you?" He asked nervously, with a tint on anger.
"Police." John held out his badge. "Are you Jason Harris?"
The man seemed relieve, knowing we were police. "Yes." He dropped his hands.
"We just need to ask you a few questions." John lowered his weapon.
I did the same, and Dorian lowered the shotgun.
"Of course." Jason nodded. "Please come in." He opened the door and led us all inside. We walked through the front hall and into a large living area. I could see an older woman clinging to David for what seemed to be her dear life.
"It's alright, Lilly. They're police." Jason informed the woman. She relaxed completely.
Dorian handed Jason back his shotgun. Jason promptly unloaded it and hung it up on the wall. "Sorry about that." Jason apologized. "David said that he thought he was being followed. I thought I could be someone from my old unit coming back to get me."
David looked ashamed.
"Don't feel ashamed, David. Not many people can sense they're being followed." I tried to cheer him up.
"If you'll excuse me, I have a marine biology project to do." David excused himself and went upstairs.
"Oh, this is my wife, Lilly." Jason introduced the small, yet strong looking woman. She smiled.
"Could I get you anything to eat or drink?" Lilly offered.
"A coffee, if it's not too much trouble." John asked. "Milk and a sugar."
"I'll have one as well. Black." I asked politely.
Lilly nodded and turned to Dorian. He politely shook his head. Lilly smiled and walked into the kitchen.
"Please, sit." Jason gestured to the couch and chairs in the living room.
I sat down on the couch, closest to the edge. Jason sat in a chair opposite of the couch. John sat down on the other end of the couch. Dorian stayed standing, inspecting the room.
"What do you need to know?" Jason asked.
"You created the MX-43 models. Why?" I asked.
Jason sighed. "I was a squad leader in the military. We were going to do a raid out in the Middle East. There was a rookie on the team. His first mission. He seemed nervous, never able to keep still or stay calm. He thought he saw the enemy and started shooting. It was a civilian. The real enemies heard and ambushed us. It was a full-on slaughter. I watched my men die. I was able to escape by sneaking through building and hiding in houses. I made it back to our Humvee, but the damage was already done." Jason paused. "I left the military and created the MX models. I wanted them to be able to go on dangerous missions and eliminate human error. I wanted the MX's to be and do everything humans aren't. They were also meant as an upgrade for the DRN's, which I heard were defective because of their emotions."
Lilly walked in. "Here you are, dear." She handed John his coffee and then turned and handed me mine.
"Thank you." I smiled at her and took a small sip. It was excellent.
Lilly went back to the kitchen, probably to cook dinner.
"Speaking of MX's, where is your android?" Jason looked at each of us, stopping at Dorian.
"You're looking at him." John replied.
"You have a DRN?" Jason asked, astonished.
"Yes." Dorian replied.
"I've never seen one in person. You act so human." Jason admired.
"Thank you." Dorian genuinely appreciated it.
"It's refreshing to speak to an android and not get a mechanical response." Jason added.
"Mr. Harris," John started, "we are investigating a case where a police MX was stolen and the GPS tracker was removed. We need another way to track it. Did you design another way to track an MX?" He finished.
"Well, of course! Everything needs a fail safe." Jason was taken aback for a few seconds.
"So what is it?" I asked.
"Come with me to my office." Jason stood up. John, Dorian, and I followed. We went upstairs. We passed by David's room, where the door was slightly cracked and I could hear music playing. Jason led us to his personal office, which had several computers.
"Let me just turn the computer on and we can get started." Jason gave a small smile and opened a closet door. He pulled out a locked briefcase. He set it down on his desk and spun a dial of numbers until the briefcase clicked open. He pushed back the lid and pulled something out. I immediately recognized it. It was a very old Macbook Air, probably from the late 2010's.
"Wow, that's a dinosaur." John remarked under his breath.
"I know. It has the original blueprints designs and programs on it. I couldn't bear to switch the files over." Jason heard him, slightly chuckling. He booted up the laptop and logged into his user. He launched a program, bringing up a 3D image of an MX model.
"I just need to know the model number and last known location." Jason positioned his fingers above the keys, ready for instructions.
"It was model number 392. It's last known location was outside of 2901 Oakview Street." Dorian accessed police data banks.
"Excellent." Jason typed the information in. He selected a box that said 'FAIL SAFE LOCATE.'
"Please state vocal password." The computer announced.
"Hotel. Alpha. Romeo. Romeo. India. Sierra. Code: Fail safe. Mike. X-ray. Four. Three." Jason pronounced each word clearly.
"Vocal password accepted." The computer responded. A loading bar appeared.
John gave me and Dorian a confused look.
"NATO phonetic alphabet. It's military talk." I explained quickly.
John nodded, understanding, making a slightly weird face.
A few moments passed.
"Search complete." The computer pinged.
"Here we are!" Jason clicked a few things, bringing up a map. A blue dot indicated where the MX was.
"It's an abandoned auto car repair shop." Dorian pulled up files.
"Tell Maldonado." John ordered. "We can drive back and then sweep the shop."
"By the time we get back, it will be nighttime. You two need to rest." Dorian argued.
"He's right." I interjected.
John sighed in agreement.
"Thank you, Mr. Harris for all your help." I turned to the man.
"It was my pleasure." Jason nodded and led the way out of the house.
"If it moves at all, tell us." John gave Jason his work number and nodded goodbye.
All three of us got into the car to head home. I slid into the back seat without an argument with John. John started up the car to head home.
I sent a quick text message to someone. It said, 'I won't be home tonight. Come over tomorrow night.'
I rolled up my jacket to make a pillow for my head. I put it down on the seat next to me and laid down across all three seat in the back. "Wake me up when we get home." I ordered.
"Yes, ma'am." John replied, a little jokingly and a little scared.
"Did you just 'ma'am' me?" I asked, quite annoyed.
John cringed.
"Don't let it happen again." I settled down into my makeshift bed and closed my eyes.
I fell into a light sleep, only to be woken up midway through the journey because of John and Dorian talking. I pretended to be asleep to listen in on their conversation.
"No, I haven't asked Maldonado yet." John said quietly to Dorian.
"Please do it soon. I can't handle it anymore." Dorian replied.
"I would have done it sooner if you didn't scan my balls." John replied, angry.
I suppressed a laugh, moving a hand to cover my mouth.
John and Dorian turned around to look at me. I quickly recovered by putting my hand under my head. I tried to slow my heartbeat as well.
"Is she still sleeping?" John asked, concerned.
"Her heart rate is lower than that of an awake human. I believe she is entering the REM stage of sleep." Dorian replied, whispering.
After a moment, I moved my eyes back and forth under my eyelids.
"There you go." Dorian turned away.
John grumbled. "I'm still angry that you scanned my balls." He paused. "Multiple times."
"They are still at full capacity." Dorian quietly replied.
"Seriously?!" John hissed quietly.
I couldn't take it any longer. I laughed right out loud. John had a shocked look on his face, and Dorian was confused.
I slowly stopped laughing, catching my breath. "I'm sorry." I said in between breaths. "It's too funny." I sat up straight.
"He's kidding right?" I said to either John or Dorian.
They looked at each other and then back to me.
"Oh my God, he's not kidding." I held a hand over my mouth. I suppressed another laugh.
"You were awake?!" John cried out, looking at me. "You said she was sleeping!" He turned to Dorian. Dorian shrugged and gave him an innocent look.
John slammed his foot down on the gas. "I need to get out of this car."
The rest of the car ride home was a little awkward.
John dropped me off at my house. "Tomorrow morning, 7 am." He ordered.
I rolled my eyes and got out of the car, stretching. I unlocked my front door and went inside as I heard the car pulling away.
"Nick! I'm home!" I yelled out. I set my keys and jacket down on the coffee table. "Nicholas!" I yelled louder.
I heard a toilet flush and I rolled my eyes.
"Jeez, Em. Did you have to yell so loudly?" Nick emerged from the bathroom.
"Sorry. You didn't answer the first time." I replied, shrugging.
"How was your first day back?" He asked, leaning back on the kitchen counter.
"Good." I shrugged. "I got assigned to another office and a DRN."
"Really?" Nick asked.
"Yes, I just told you." I rolled my eyes and headed towards the stairs. "I'm going to bed. Can you help me?" I asked.
"That's what I'm here for." Nick smiled and followed me upstairs.
