All my life (alive or dead) I had searched for that one. And when I met Bella Swan, I thought I'd found her. Yes, we had had our problems, but we had always overcome them.

I am a vampire.

Bella wanted to be one too.

We had made an agreement. I would change her after our wedding. Our wedding was a week away.

You see, becoming a vampire would have made her invincible and strong. Falling out of a window, wouldn't have left a mark.

I was sitting in my living room talking with my sister, Alice, about Bella and my wedding, when my cell phone rang.

Strange, I had thought, Bella's the only one who ever calls.

And Bella was supposed to be in Florida visiting with her Mother, before the wedding.

I picked up my phone, and automatically felt a pit in my stomach. Charlie, Bella's father, was on the other line. He was crying.

"Edward?" he asked his voice cracking.

"Yes, Charlie?" I responded.

"I have something, very-"he let out a sob, "Tragic to tell you."

But I already knew.

I could read minds.

Charlie's was saying that Bella was dead.

"No!"I screamed.

"Yes," he said, choking on his words, "Bella is dead."

"No," I said again, softer this time, as I began to cry.

"She was pronounced dead about an hour ago," he said tightly, "I should have called sooner, but I had to call her mother first."

It was silent on the phone.

Questions raced through my head.

Why hadn't she gone to Florida?

Why hadn't Alice seen this coming?

Why her?

Why my Bella?
