He sat before the monitor as he was ordered, watching the images of carnage displayed before his eyes. A purple behemoth savagely defeating it's opponent. 'Which of the children is this,' he thought. 'This doesn't fit the profiles of either of pilots from the files. He continue to watch in silence when one of his superiors spoke from behind the privacy screen. He has never seen any of their faces, but their voices he did know.
"Third Child, Ikari Shinji, now designated pilot of EVA unit one." It was the Vice-chief that spoke, his voice gravelly and low, almost a growl.
'Ikari, must be the son of the commander of the Japanese branch of Nerv,' his thoughts drifted for a second to the connection the name Ikari meant before his training forced him to be completely focused on the Vice-chief's voice.
"What is your assessment of the pilot's performance?" The man's tone gave little of what his is thinking or feeling away.
'Why did Commander Ikari send in his unexperienced son when the reports indicate that the First Child would be a better choice.'"He defeated his opponent, combat skills are non-existence, but that is to be expected as the pilot was not trained to perform the task from birth." His voice was monotone and almost sounded bored as if they were discussing the weather not the first battle of humanities' survival.
"Is there something you want to add, you paused before responding?"
"No. I was just thinking on the battle and trying to make practical use of what I have been shown."
"Always trying to improve your usefulness to our purpose, if half of our personnel had that attitude there would be little to fear from man or angel." There was slight venom in the man's words, seeming unnoticed by the boy sitting before him.
"Your praise is not necessary sir, I am simply doing was I was born and trained to do." The boy's reply was just as uninterested as before.
"The Commander Ikari has requested that we transfer you and project over to him as soon as you complete you next training cycle. You should gather your belonging."
"Understood sir," I will have to inform Grandfather of this change during the unarmed combat session." The boy didn't understand the tightness he felt in his chest, but focused on his breathing not allowing his serene features to revel his inner turmoil.
