Hello wonderful readers!

Thank you so much for all the love you are giving this series! And a huge thank you for those who are still waiting for their prompt to be filled! I am getting to them as fast as I can!

PROMPTS ARE CLOSED!

This prompt is from midnightsky0612 on ao3 - Prompt: Between the planning, setting things up with the help of the Starks, and buying the ring, Happy forgets to ask for Peter's blessing to marry May (so it's the night he plans to propose which involved inviting May to dinner at the compound but he realizes what he forgot when Tony mentioned Peter). You can decide how he goes about it in the end but it would be funny to have just Tony and Rhodey trying but failing to help Happy bond with Peter which may pr may not cause some light angsty misunderstandings XD

I hope you enjoy and my apologies for any mistakes!

Ask The Question

It had been months in the making and Tony Stark can't believe that the night has finally arrived.

When Happy Hogan had first come to Tony, he had looked almost embarrassed. It had been just the two of them, Happy entering Tony's lab. He looked around the workshop, his eyes never settling and never looking at Tony.

"What's up, Happy?" Tony had asked, catching on the reluctant way Happy seemed to be mulling over words.

Happy had sighed heavily, his cheeks flushing pink as he finally looked at Tony. "I need your help."

Tony had tried not to grin too widely. It had been a long time since Happy had asked him for something and he wondered what it possibly be. Instead, he took a calming breath, keeping his smile something gentle. "Oh yeah, with what?"

Happy had heaved another big sigh, muttering under his voice that Tony didn't catch before he cleared his throat. "I'm going to ask May to marry me."

Tony's grin had turned genuine, and he came to Happy, clapping him on the shoulder. "Congratulations, Happy."

"Thank you," Happy had said, his body puffing up as a smile broke out across his face. "May is…she's…"

"Yeah," Tony agreed, knowing the words that happy was trying to find because he felt the same way about Pepper. "So, what do you need my help with?"

"I, ah, need some help with the rings," Happy had admitted. "And the proposal."

"Say no more," Tony had said. He clapped Happy on the shoulder again, giving him a tight squeeze. "I've got your back."

Tony realised very quickly that Happy didn't actually need his help. The former boxer seemed to know exactly what he wanted, going from ring shop to ring shop until on their fifth shop he had finally found the ring that he had been looking for. Tony didn't mind being dragged along, content to be there for his friend who had been there for Tony since the beginning.

When it came to the planning of the proposal, Happy had several ideas that he ran through with Tony, Pepper and Rhodey over dinner.

"No, don't listen to this idiot," Rhodey had said, waving a hand at Tony without looking away from Happy. "Tony doesn't know the meaning of the word subtle."

"Hey!" Tony had argued. "I do to! Pep, back me up. You loved my proposal."

"I did," Pepper smiled. "But Rhodey, right. You don't know the meaning of the word subtle."

Tony had shot his wife a betrayed look. "I thought my proposal was beautiful."

"You gave me the ring along with a new cabin by the lake," Pepper had said, raising her eyebrows. "Most people just give a ring."

"You don't pay me enough to buy May a house," Happy had pointed out.

Tony had thrown his hands up in the air, slumping back down in his seat. "I don't know why you asked for my help then."

"Either," Rhodey, Pepper and Happy had chimed together, making Tony pout at the lot of them.

In the end, Happy had decided to propose at the compound. They were going to have a lovely dinner with everyone before Happy would ask May to come for a little stroll around the gardens which Tony and Rhodey had set up under Pepper's watchful gaze.

"Very nice, boys," Pepper had said, approvingly.

When the night finally arrived, it occurred to Tony when May arrived with Peter that Happy had forgotten one very important thing.

"Uh oh," Tony winced.

Happy turned to Tony sharply. "What?"

"Happy, did you tell Peter you were going to propose?" Tony asked quietly.

Happy eyes widened, the colour draining from his face. "Oh shit."

"It's not too late," Tony said, patting Happy on the shoulder. "Go so hi to May, Rhodey and I will grab the kid."

Tony strode away before Happy could protest the plan, tugging on Rhodey's arm as he passed his best friend and tugged him along until they reached Peter.

"Hey Mr. Stark!" Peter beamed, rocking on his heels. "Hi Mr. Rhodey!"

"Hey kid," Tony said, wrapping an arm around Peter's shoulder. "Got something to show you in the lab. Come with us."

"Cool!" Peter beamed, willingly letting Tony steer him away from the kitchen and towards the lab.

When they reached the workshop, Tony sat Peter down on the chair that had become his and took a couple of steps back.

Peter looked between Rhodey and Tony curiously, head tilted to the side. "So, what do you need to show me."

"Yeah, what do you need to show him?" Rhodey asked, sending Tony a confused look.

"Well not me. But Happy has something he wants to ask you," Tony said, shooting Rhodey a significant look.

It was a testament to their friendship on how well they knew each other because Rhodey's eyes widened as clicked on what Tony was not saying.

"Oh damn, he forgot," Rhodey mumbled under his breath.

"Forgot what?" Peter asked, eyes narrowing suspiciously.

Happy entered the lab before Tony could formulate a response. Happy strode over to them, his hands twisting nervously. He cleared his throat, glancing at Tony and Rhodey before focusing on Peter.

"Hey, Pete."

"Hey, Happy," Peter greeted back. "Mr. Stark said you wanted to ask me something?"

"Uh, yes. Yes, I do," Happy said, shifting from foot to foot. He cleared his throat again. "Well, I just. I really like you, kid."

"I like you too," Peter beamed.

"Good. That's really good," Happy said, his shoulders relaxing slightly.

Tony and Rhodey took several steps backwards, trying to give Happy and Peter some space and trying to look as if they weren't hanging off every word.

"And I really love your aunt," Happy continued. "You and May, you've both welcomed me into your family, and I really appreciate that. It's been a real pleasure getting to know you and May."

"We love you too," Peter said, his smile fading. "Are you – oh my god, Happy are you dying?"

"What? No, I'm not dying," Happy rushed out, looking startled.

"Oh," Peter blinked and then his eyes narrowed. "Wait – are you breaking up with May? Happy! Why would you do that? You just said that you love her! She really loves you and you make her happy and, and, and you can't just break up with her!"

"Whoa, Pete, slow down kiddo," Tony interrupted Peter's rambling as Happy seemed too stunned to say anything.

"Happy is not breaking up with your aunt," Rhodey added firmly.

"Then why are you telling me how much you love my aunt?" Peter asked, now looking confused.

"I'mgoingotaskhertomarryme," Happy rushed out.

Peter blinked at Happy.

"Uh, in case you didn't catch any of that," Tony started to say slowly, shooting Happy a concerned look.

"I heard him," Peter cut Tony off. His face was eerily closed off and Tony shared a worried look with Rhodey.

Happy shifted nervously. "I wanted to tell you, before I did. I wanted to make sure that you would be okay with that."

Tony could feel himself holding his breath as he waited for Peter to reply.

The kid was watching Happy with a considering look on his face.

"You'll take care of her?" Peter asked slowly.

"Yes," Happy said promptly.

"And you'll make her happy?" Peter asked. "And eat her cooking even if it's terrible? And make sure she doesn't over work herself and you'll take care of her and let her take care of you?"

"Yeah, Peter," Happy said, his expression softening.

"And you won't break her heart?" Peter asked, eyes narrowing.

"Never on purpose," Happy said solemnly.

"And you'll take my side when it comes to Spiderman related stuff?" Peter asked.

Happy snorted. "Pete, I'll probably agree with your aunt."

Peter huffed but slowly a smile stretched across his lips. "Fine."

"So, are you okay with me asking May to marry me?" Happy asked hopefully.

Peter grinned. "Yeah. You can ask her."

Happy beamed, stepping forward to pull Peter into a tight hug. "Thanks, Pete."

"She'll say yes," Peter said confidently, pulling back from the hug. "I'm really glad you are asking her, Happy."

Tony beamed, clapping his hands. "Excellent! Let's get back out there before she starts to get suspicious, yeah?"

"Good idea," Rhodey said, clapping Happy on the shoulder before steering him out of the lab.

Tony stopped Peter from following, giving Rhodey and Happy a chance to disappear down the hallway before he turned to Peter. The kid looked at him with an innocent expression, eyes wide and lips in a slightly confused smiled.

"Mr. Stark?"

It dawned on Tony suddenly. "You little shit. You knew Happy was going to propose."

Peter gave Tony a shit-eating grin. "He was not subtle at all Mr. Stark."

Tony barked out a laugh. "Oh kid. You nearly gave the poor guy a heart attack."

Peter laughed. "May told me I had to make him squirm a little."

Tony's eyebrow shot up. "May knows?"

Peter gave Tony a flat look. "Duh, Mr. Stark. It's Aunt May."

Tony laughed again because of course May knew. He shook his head, slinging an arm around Peter's shoulder and tugged him close. "Happy has no idea what he's getting himself into."

"Yes, he does," Peter said, grinning. "And he loves it. Otherwise, he wouldn't be asking Aunt May to marry him tonight."

"You're right," Tony said softly. "He's lucky to have you both, kid."

"We're lucky too," Peter said just as softly.

Tony hugged Peter tightly to his side as he started walking them out of the lab. "Come on, let's join them."

"How long do you think it will take Happy to crack if I draw out dinner?" Peter asked.

Tony grinned. "I don't know. Let's find out."
