Notes: I happily blame mithas 45 minutes for such a short piece, now isn't that shameful. I should have been doing something else, as usual. Probably lots of errors and stupid imagery, read at your own risk. Originally (and wrongfully ;;) posted in tempsmort.
Note2: This was written wayyyyy before HP5, HP6, and HP7 :D; So kindly forgive the inconsistencies.
They would often times hold hands and brush lips, in all appearances discreet despite being surrounded by hundreds of students. When they'd first arrived for the Yule Ball, people gave them brief glances. Nothing new with Malfoy displaying his galleon's worth in robes, and nothing unusual with him sharing it with his close pureblood companion. The black finery that Severus wore spoke of Lucius' taste and style.
Further into the night, the people had stopped hiding their gazes and blatantly looked while speaking behind upraised hands. What are they doing? some had asked. Does the sole Malfoy heir wish to be disowned? The pair had heard most of the scandalized whisperings and had laughed between themselves.
What, in fact, should the Malfoy heir care? He was getting married a year later. That was fact, and indisputable. What he did between then and now was his own business, and would not affect the future.
A white hand would sometimes brush teasingly through strands of black hair, shared smiles silently speaking of private games behind closed doors.
It was a favorable...arrangement...for Lucius. The mere sharing of flesh at first, but now this intimacy, this scandal, and the whispers shared among his peers and professors. He would use these to his advantage, just as he saw the quiet admiration in Severus two years ago and saw it for the opportunity it was. The things he wanted were always around him, always so delightfully convenient.
For Severus, no one knew about his regard of their relationship. He spoke to no one about it, keeping his privacy around him like an immutable shell and letting Lucius do all the talking. Won't Snape mind? some would ask. Why should he? Lucius would answer, and Snape would smirk and add nothing to the conversation.
The two had kept their games private until the last Yule Ball of their stay at Hogwarts. Those who suspected grimaced at Lucius' timing. Those who knew nothing adjusted and soon had their opinions sailing from their mouths.
They feigned ignorance to the curious gazes and open hostility throughout the night. They enjoyed themselves, speaking quietly and laughing at shared jokes. White hands clasping. Mouths parting in a variety of kisses.
Their robes shimmered a hundred shades of black and white as they shared a single dance in the middle of the Great Hall.
