Academy Week 2

Danni frowned, her brow furrowed as she poured over her Kido book.

She was sitting in a secluded meadow that was used for students to practice; with squad four close by, it was the perfect place.

Her nose crinkled in concentration as she read over the Kido, getting more frustrated every moment.

"Okay, let's try this again." Danni said, taking in a deep breath and turning the pages back to the beginning, "Kido-Spirit Way-is a form of Shinigami combat based on advanced spells. These spells are produced with strong Reiryoku and fall into two categories: Hado for direct attacks, and Bakudo for battle support."

Danni sighed, she'd heard and read that specific phrase too many times. Her second week and she understood the idea behind Kido perfectly. Performing it, on the other hand is what caused her problems.

That's why she was in the 'secluded' field away from the other students. Though, a lot of them hadn't gotten them either…she still wanted to figure it out on her own.

They had been assigned Tenteikura to learn and perform for their first Kido spell they'd done on their own. Danni thought it was a little soon for any of them to work on but, she wasn't the teacher.

Tenteikura was suppose to create an energy barrier in the form of a rectangular wall, possibly able of keeping destructive spells too.

"Okay," Danni sighed, breathing in and setting her book down in front of her, "Let's do this."

Danni closed her eyes and breathed in, trying to relax and picture what was suppose to happen.

"Black and white net. Twenty-two bridges, sixty-six crowns and belts. Footprints, distant thunder, sharp peak, engulfing land, hidden in the night, sea of clouds, blue line. Form a circle and fly through the heavens."

She spoke the incantation, her eyes squeezed shut, hoping it would work.

When she opened her eyes, there was a slight shimmer around the field area but it quickly disappeared and her excitement faltered.

"It's okay, Danni." she comforted herself, "It was just the first run. You've got all afternoon to get it!"

~•~

Four hours later and it seemed that her Kido skills had digressed instead of progressed.

She hadn't even been able to get the shimmering glow after her first chance and needless to say, she was getting a little frustrated.

"Gah! I can't get it! I'll never be able to get it! It was a mistake coming here!"

Danni screamed in frustration, put the Kido book down so she wouldn't throw it across the field, after all, she still had to use that.

"What's wrong? Why are you so frustrated?"

Danni jumped, thinking she was the only one in the field, whirling around to see a slender youthful woman with blue eyes and black hair, followed by someone who looked to be a young squad member.

"I'm sorry," Danni said, jumping up to bow, noticing the captains coat, swirling around the beautiful woman, "I didn't realize there was anyone else out here."

"Who are you? Young student?" she asked, a calm smile appearing on her face.

"My name is Danielle Ame, I'm a student learning to be a Shinigami. I came out here to practice my Kido." she blushed, "It wasn't going very well."

Unohana smiled, "What are you having trouble with? Maybe I'll be able to help while Heto collects the herbs we came for."

"Oh, no, I couldn't-" Danni stuttered, waving her hands in front of her and growing quite red.

Unohana sat down on the grassy meadow and patted the spot next to her with a smile.

Danni walked over to her, picking up her Kido book on the way, and sat down-a permanent blush on her face.

"There we go. Now, which Kido spell are you suppose to be learning, Ame-Chan?"

"How do you know my name?" Danni asked, shock filling her nervous expression.

"I learn all the students that enter the Academy; In case they come visiting." Unohana laughed, a soft gentle sound that made you think of a doe sleeping.

"Oh, I should have figured that out." Danni's face was getting redder and redder as time went on.

She handed the Captain her book and flipped to the correct page.

Unohana studied the page for barely a minute before looking back up, "This is a wonderful choice for the first Kido incantation you learn. Was it your choice?"

"No, Ma'am. Sensei chose it for us."

Unohana gave an amused smile, her eyes twinkling, "He use to have the students dealing with fire for the first Kido spell. I'm glad he softened up. I was getting to know the students too quickly from medical visits."

Danni looked down at her hands, imagining them engulfed in flames and laughed nervously.

"Now, show me how you've done it before and I'll see what I can do to point you in the right direction."

Danni nodded, read the incantation over again and focused.

Danni closed her eyes, pictured the barrier and recited the Kido incantation and when she opened her eyes there was the shimmer of the barrier before it burst, like when you pop a bubble.

Danni sighed, "Well, that's the second time I've gotten a barrier at all, at least."

"Ame-Chan, close your eyes for a moment." Unohana said gently, a smile on her sweet face.

Danni complied, trusting the Captain completely.

"Now, the best way to do barrier spells is to relax and focus on something you want to protect." she gently touched Danni's shoulders, feeling them loosen up, "Is there something you want to protect?"

Danni was about to say no but two brown eyes and a naïve smile popped into her mind; Momo.

"Yes, I do."

"Then bind the spell thinking of this object or person."

Danni nodded, focusing now upon protecting Momo instead of the incantation, "Black and white net. Twenty-two bridges, sixty-six crowns and belts. Footprints, distant thunder, sharp peak, engulfing land, hidden in the night, sea of clouds, blue line. Form a circle and fly through the heavens."

She opened her eyes and the shimmer was back, staying this time.

"Did I really do it?" Danni asked amazed.

Unohana's assistant came up to them, a basket full of herbs in his hands.

The second he touched the barrier it popped, not strong enough to stand up to opposition.

"Maybe your protective item wasn't enough."

Danni thought, "What else can I be protective of? I don't have much…Wait, let me try again!"

Danni closed her eyes and focused, her thoughts filling with chilling blue eyes joining the brown ones in her mind.

'Do this for Momo and Toshiro!'

She relaxed her shoulders and began to recite, "Black and white net. Twenty-two bridges, sixty-six crowns and belts. Footprints, distant thunder, sharp peak, engulfing land, hidden in the night, sea of clouds, blue line. Form a circle and fly through the heavens."

"I knew you could do it." Unohana aid, the smile obvious in her voice.

Danni opened her eyes and grinned at the shimmer keeping a bird from flying above them.

"I did it! Thank you so much, Sensei! I couldn't have done it without your help!"

Unohana smiled, seeing the younger Academy students making their way always made her smile.

"You're welcome, young Ame-Chan. You must remember that you did it. It is because of what's in your heart that you were able to do so well. Keep practicing and there will be no Kido you can't conquer."

Danni jumped up when Unohana rose, picking up the basket full of herbs.

"Thank you for our wise words." Danni said, bowing deeply.

Unohana gave a bow back, "Never fear to stop to visit me. For healing or for Kido help."

Danni smiled, "Of course, Captain Unohana."

She nodded and walked towards the end of the barrier and stopped, waiting for Danni to release it.

"Oh!" She said, swiftly holding up two fingers, "Release!"

The barrier disappeared and soon the captain did as well.

"Wow! Two Captain-Sensei's and it's only been two weeks! I can do this! I can actually do this!"

Danni went back to her dorm feeling light hearted and less stressed than she'd been earlier in the week.

Ready to take on her next challenge.
