"Face it Glimmer I don't love you anymore, get out!"
I'm crying and sobbing, "Please say you're lying Cato, I love you! Please!"
""I'm sorry Glimmer- I just don't feel it anymore-"
"Glimmer, wake up…" I hear someone murmur. I thrash around a bit more before taking a gasp of air and allowing my eyes to fly open. I see the man I just dreamed of shaking my shoulder with a look of concern on his face. "Are you okay kitten?"
I nod slowly and process what's going on.
I've known him for two days and already I'm having dreams of him… it doesn't even help that he always calls me darling, and kitten.
"I'm sorry Cato, did I wake you?" I ask lightly.
He smiles and nods slightly, "perhaps, but don't worry, I don't mind. I just wanted to make sure you were okay, for you sounded so sad. Anything you want to talk about?"
I shyly shake my head and look out my window to see the sun is rising. "No, but thank you Cato… most guys wouldn't be so sweet about it." He smiles and rests a hand on my covered thigh.
"Well most guys don't have the pleasure of being awoken by such a beautiful girl. Would you like to go grab breakfast with me love?" I swear I'm swooning.
I allow a shimmer of a smile to creep onto my face. "Okay"
"So then I tell her that, no that is not how you slice the sword, and the idiot gets in my way, loses a thumb!"
I laugh along with Valeska; she has so many stories, all pretty funny.
I spend most of my time sitting in her room with her while we talk and watch the telly, sometimes Cato joins us which is always fun because the two of them have such great memories. They're like brother and sister; I admire their close relationship honestly.
I wish I could be close to Cato in that way.
It's nearly twelve AM and we're supposed to be at the capitol in the morning, Valeska is confident and prepared and collected. She definitely has what it takes to win. So does Cato though… but I can't imagine them killing each other.
I suck in a breath and smile shakily.
"You okay G? You seem… upset?"
I sigh, "I'm scared Veevee… this time next week we'll be-"
"Oh honey don't think about it, it's not worth it. Look, think of it this way, you're a career; you have a great chance of winning. Just… I don't know, stick with me and I'll try to get you home okay?"
I look at her, stunned because she sounds completely truthful.
"Why the hell would you let me live? You could win with a flick of your wrist im sure…"
She sighs and frowns, "You probably don't know or remember but it was my brother who killed your sister Glimmer. I'm going to get you out alive, because your sister did it for my brother, she got him to the end and let him kill her. Im so sorry Glimmer…"
I'm on the verge of tears. "Vee… you're my best friend… I've only known you three days but… you understand and I don't want to lose you. I don't wanna lose anybody."
A single silver tear falls from her eye to her cheek, she nods. "I don't wanna lose you either Gee…" And we're hugging and crying and dammit I hate it.
"Hello ladies- whoa. What's going on?" Cato… great.
Valeska turns to him and make grabby hands. "Cato… at least two of us are going to die within the next two weeks."
We're an hour out and Damask makes an appearance, he glares at Cato who has an arm around my thin waist, pulling me close to his chest.
Last night after Valeska went to sleep Cato stayed with me and held me until we both well asleep, legs intertwined.
I feel as if this wasn't the Hunger Games, I'd fall in love with Cato.
Maybe I already have.
We stand by the window, his arm around me, and my head on his chest. We watch the scenery pass.
I can't help but appreciate the comfortable silence around us.
Valeska is pacing the length of the living room. His fingers clutch zt my side as the first site of the Capitol appears. I take a deep breath and lean even more into Cato.
He wraps his other arm around me, and holds me in his strong arms.
His thumbs traces a circle pattern into my hip.
I allow a sigh of content fall from my lips.
I could stand in his arms for forever, I feel so safe here. I turn my head slightly to look at him.
His extraordinary blues eyes instantly connect with my boring olive ones.
His lips are partially parted, the morning sun dancing on his skin.
He leans down a bit, just to press a soft kiss to my cheek.
And I think, maybe, just maybe, I understand how my sister gave her life for a boy who would never do the same for her; she did it for love.
