Time stood still as Matthew's words entered Wesley's brain to be processed. He looked at Matthew strangely, with his head tilted slightly to the side as if Matthew had just said something to him in an unknown language. James gave Matthew a look that simply said "I told you so." Wesley's eyes never left Matthew; Matthew bravely returned his look, hoping for the best.
"About the demon," Chyp said as he cleared his throat rather loudly, distracting the three brothers. "I think we should get on with it before it's too late."
"Right," Wesley said tentatively, finally moving his eyes away from Matthew. "I guess we should."
"I'll, uh, find the spell," Matthew said, shifting through the debris on the floor and picking up the Book of Light. He flipped through the pages and found the spell he and James had seen before. It was a spell to summon anyone from any plane, but it was a Complete spell, requiring all three brothers to recite it. "Um, you guys ready?"
"What are we gonna do once he gets here?" James asked, moving between Wesley and Matthew. He did not want anything to happen, but Wesley remained silent, causing more tension in the room.
"There's a vanquishing spell," Matthew answered awkwardly. "I figure we'll summon him here and say the spell while he's caught off guard. Simple fix. All we need to do is make a portal."
Chyp and the three brothers walked single file into the basement. Wesley walked down the steps and moved next to the old stand where the Book usually lay. He waited there by himself while James and Matthew took some chalk and worked together to draw a large pentagram. Around the five-pointed star, they drew a circle so that each of the points touched a part of the circle. Chyp waited patiently at the bottom of the stairwell, while Wesley impatiently waited at the stand. After a few minutes, the two brothers finished their work and joined Wesley, with James again moving between Matthew and Wesley. James held the Book while the three of them read the spell:
"In this night and in this hour
We call upon the ancient power.
Open the door through time and space;
The one we seek, bring here to this place."
The shape James and Matthew had drawn suddenly illuminated in a brilliant multicolored light, each point of the pentagram glowing a different color. Red, yellow, green, blue, and violet lights traveled around the circle, converging to create a bright white light. The three brothers as well as Chyp shielded their eyes from the intensity of the light. Inside the shape, the lights began to swirl around like a small tornado. It grew stronger and stronger as the black silhouette of a figure slowly began to fade into view.
"Here he comes!" James shouted.
As the lights subsided, Bokor stood in the middle of the shape, about a foot taller than James. He stood there with his arms folded, glaring at the brothers through deep orange eyes. He smiled craftily at the three as he slowly stretched his frame. He then clapped slowly at the accomplishment of those who brought him from his prison of a dimension.
"Well done," he congratulated mockingly. "I have waited long enough."
"What are you talking about?" Matthew asked.
"I've been in your little brother's head long enough to know your plan," Bokor explained. "This would be the part where you recite the spell that's going to vanquish me, correct?"
"Correct," James repeated as he turned the pages of the Book. "You catch on quick."
"Here's the part you failed to consider," Bokor said, pointing at Wesley. "With the two of us now in the same place, my connection to him is stronger than ever. His will has already been broken before, and can be done again. He is weak. He is helpless against my power."
Bokor's body began to twist and contort with loud cracking sounds. James and Matthew winced at the sounds, while Wesley remained stoic. With a bellowing laugh, Bokor transformed into the form of the last person Wesley expected to see. James and Matthew both widened their eyes at the same time. Chyp looked on confused. Having been away for most of the time, he really had little to no context of the situation.
"Kim?" Wesley asked with uncertainty. Was this really her? His mind became clouded again. The sight of her made his thinking go haywire.
"No," Matthew said, grabbing Wesley's shoulder. "It's not Kim. It's Bokor, the demon. He's getting in your head again. You've got to fight it. You're stronger than him."
With a stern look, Kim's eyes glowed orange for a brief second. James and Matthew found themselves suddenly outside the basement with Chyp, back in the kitchen. The door slammed shut and from the sound, it locked itself. Matthew pushed the door but it remained shut. He pushed harder, but the door refused to budge. James tapped into his telekinetic power and waved his hand dismissively, but the door did not move.
"He locked us out of our own basement?" James asked incredulously. "I can't open it!"
"Get down there, kid!" Matthew commanded Chyp.
"It's Chyp," Chyp said gruffly as his body turned into blue and white lights.
James and Matthew watched the lights begin to move through the basement door, but something went wrong. There was a loud sound, similar to a lightning bolt, and the lights rebounded off the door and scattered everywhere. They reformed on the ground and Chyp rematerialized into the kitchen, rubbing his head. James helped him to his feet.
"There's a magical barrier blocking us from getting inside," Chyp said, shaking his head. "And it packs a punch."
"Let me try," Matthew said as his body turned transparent.
He took a few steps back and then ran at the door, intending to either knock it down or pass right through it. The moment his body made contact with the door, though, the same sound echoed throughout the kitchen and he suddenly found himself hurtling through the air. He landed on James and the two of them crashed to the floor. He rubbed his head in the same manner as Chyp.
"The kid's right," Matthew confirmed. "We can't get in. Homeboy's in there alone with that damn demon. Jimmy, try to send a clone inside."
"No way," James said, pushing Matthew off of him. "I don't want the same thing to happen to me! I think our only choice is to hope Wes can take care of Bokor. Think he can?"
"In his condition?" Matthew asked. "We've gotta get in there. Maybe we could try a spell or something."
"Door unlock.
No magic block."
The same lightning bolt sound resounded through the room, but the door still did not open. Matthew thought quickly.
"I call upon the Powers to help undo,
Remove this barrier; let me through."
Once again, the loud cracking sound echoed through the room. The door looked the same. Matthew touched his fist to his chin, trying to come up with some solution to get back in the basement.
