A/N: Yes, I'm still alive, and I'm finally trying to finish this story.
I'm truly sorry about the delay, but life turned crazy all of a sudden and I had no time or brain space for writing, I hope this makes up for the terrible long wait.
A week later, Danny was finally allowed to go back to work, on the condition that he started with half days and only on desk duty for at least a couple of weeks.
His mood had improved slightly. It helped that he had work to take his mind off his problems, but when work was done, his Ohana stepped up to listen, or simply to keep him company while he checked job openings or looked for a not so expensive apartment in Vegas. He was still moving slowly, not fully recovered from his injuries, but slowly going back to normal.
It was Wednesday and a slow day at the office, so the whole team was in, finishing up reports and closing details of their latest case. Danny was in his office, dealing with some paperwork and checking the listings for apartments in Vegas.
Steve was in his office, just getting off the phone when Danny's voice brought his attention back to their office. "No… No, I don't want it!" Danny could be heard, sounding distressed.
It took two steps for Steve to reach his door, and the sight of Rachel trying to hand Danny a large envelope stopped him in his tracks "No Danny, you don't understand!" She was saying, trying to move closer to Danny, looking at him pleadingly.
Danny was pale as a sheet, standing with his back to the nearest wall and looking like a caged animal. He was looking at anything but thepapers and trying to move towards the door. Chin and Kono were nowhere to be found.
Steve stepped closer, looking at Rachel with a frown. He could see that Rachel had brought some official looking papers and by the look of Danny, they didn't say anything good. "Hey, what's going on here?" He asked, standing next to Danny and glaring at Rachel.
Before Rachel could answer, Danny bolted to the door, not even looking at the other two people in the room. "I'm sorry… I… I just can't do it right now…" He mumbled on his way out.
Before Steve could follow after his friend, Rachel pulled at his arm. "Wait… You don't understand! It's not what Danny thinks…" She said.
About 15 minutes later, Steve was looking for Danny around the palace. Chin was hanging by the main doors, so he could confirm that the detective had not left the premises. A text from Kono let him know that someone in a bit of a hurry had entered the men's restrooms, so that's where Steve found himself, knocking softly.
He didn't expect an answer, so after a minute he took a peek inside. Danny was there, alone, leaning on the sink, his head hanging low. "Danny, you ok?" He asked, studying his friend.
Danny didn't even lift his head to look at Steve. "I can't do this… She… She's taking her away for good…" He said in a trembling voice.
Steve frowned, really not liking the look of his friend. "Danny, is that what she said?"
Danny shook his head, moving from the sink to pace the small restroom. "She didn't have to say it! She's got court documents, she actually got a judge to take away what little was left of my time with Grace! I… couldn't stay to listen to her… I just couldn't!"
Steve came closer, stopping his friend's frantic movement with a hand on his shoulder. "Danny… Whatever it is, you need to see those papers for yourself, you need to face whatever it is, it's the only way you'll be able to do something about it! You can't just stay here, buddy…" He said in a gentle voice.
Danny lifted his hands, passing them over his hair in a nervous gesture. He dropped his head to look at the floor, leaning unconsciously towards his partner. "I'm scared… I'm terrified! I… I don't think I can face it… I can't see the written proof that I've lost Grace for good… I just can't!" He said, lifting his head to look desperately at his friend.
Steve moved his hand to the back of Danny's head, pulling him close. "Danny, I've never known you to be someone who runs away from a fight… Damn, you've moved across the country, you've left your family, your work, your home, and you were ready to do it all over again, just for the chance to be in her life somehow! You've fought so hard for so long and you're telling me that you're going to let a stupid legal paper to tell you to stay away from your Grace?" He said, shaking him a bit. "Are you really telling me that you're not planning on fighting this?" He asked, this time more gently.
"You're not alone in this, Danno. Not anymore, so you just say the word and we'll find the way to fight this…" He said, finally letting go of his friend.
Danny took a deep breath, passing his hand down his face. "Yeah, you're right… Ok, let's do this…" He said with a determined nod.
They went back to the office and Danny was surprised to see that Rachel was not there anymore. Kono approached them. "She said that you could call her at any time if you needed to talk. She left those papers for you…" She said softly, pointing to the dreaded papers on the smart table.
Danny nodded, moving to take the papers. He thought about moving to his office to review them in a more private setting, but he needed to see them now or he'd lose the nerve.
He ripped open the envelope, taking the documents and started reading. It took him two times to make sense of the first few lines, but once they did, the shock made him drop them with a startled gasp.
Kono moved to his side in an instant and Chin rolled in a chair for Danny to sit before he fell down, but Steve kept his distance, studying his friend's reaction. Finally Kono couldn't take it anymore. "Danny?" she asked uncertainly.
Danny folded into the chair, taking a minute before he leaned forward and picked up the papers, he read them again and again until he could truly believe what they said. "I… Th-hey…I don't believe it! I've got Grace back… they gave me joint custody of Grace…" He said, looking at everyone with a shell-shocked expression.
Kono and Chin looked at each other and then back at Danny, moving quickly to pull him into a happy hug. Danny noticed that Steve stayed back, looking at the scene with a happy expression. Once the cousins let him go, Danny moved to Steve's side and punched him in the arm. "You son of a bitch, you knew about it, didn't you? Why the hell didn't you tell me?!" He asked his friend with a frown, but there was no way he could wipe out the happy smile from his face.
Steve smirked, putting his arm around Danny's shoulders. "Come on, Danno. You had convinced yourself that it was a terrible thing, would you have believed me if I told you the truth?"
Danny just shook his head, pulling Steve into a hug.
Steve just slapped his back happily, pulling away after a minute. "Ok, Rachel said that you could go to her place and tell her the news yourself, so go on, get out of here!"
Danny looked around, still a bit shocked by the whole situation, but he moved happily to get his things from his office. With a final hug to each of his teammates, he was off.
Steve looked at Chin and Kono as well, finally relieved to have some happy news. He thought about the work they'd been doing during the day and with a hand on their shoulders he directed them to the door as well. "You know what? Let's get out of here. Beers are on me!"
TBC…
A/N: I was about to leave it on a cliffhanger, but after all the wait, I thought it would be just too cruel. Now there only should be an epilogue, which I hope will come out in less time than what it took me to produce this chapter.
I really want to thank everyone that's still reading, and I'd really like to hear what you think of this chapter!
See you around!
