Lucy flipped over, hearing a buzzing so close to her ear and she swatted viciously in the air, trying to make it go away. It sounded like the buzzing of a huge house fly that wanted everything in its power to land on her face. The most annoying thing about it was that it was so close to her ear and no matter how much she swatted at the offending creature, the buzzing never stopped. She opened her eye and glanced blearily around her, trying to pinpoint the bug's location but right at the time she did, the buzzing ceased. The only sound now was that of Gru's snoring next to her.
She sighed in content and moved to snuggle closer to him, and just as she had found the right spot the buzzing started up again, and this time something crashed to the hardwood floor. She sat up startled and threw the covers away from her, jumping from the bed in haste. She looked down to see her cell phone buzzing around on the floor and almost busted out laughing at her own stupidity.
She bent down and picked up the cell phone, not bothering to look at the name before placing it to her ear.
"Hello?" She asked in a mid-yawn that died in her throat as soon as the individual on the other end started talking.
"Good morning Agent Wilde, did my impromptu meeting wipe you both of your energy?" Ramsbottom's voice seemed to pour through her cell phone boisterously and she winced from its loudness.
"Oh, hello Sir." She glanced at the clock quickly, slumping at the reading of 11:35. No, actually I'm quite used to it she thought bitterly. After dropping off the girls at school, the two of them had returned home only to collapse tiredly in bed.
He chuckled somewhat coldly on the other end, making Lucy anxious.
"You certainly sound like it Agent."
"Is there something that you wanted to tell me particularly?" She twisted a lock of her unruly morning hair around her finger as she waited for a possible long winded response.
"We have managed to get you both on the guest list for VaLeceum's gala. You will have to be there tomorrow night at 7:00 sharp."
"Well I do have one little question about that, what if VaLeceum figures out that we weren't on the guest list? Wouldn't that be our first bout of potential trouble?"
"Ah, but I thought you'd never ask. In making this way easier for us, it is going to be a masquerade type gala, so you will both be disguised throughout the party in a sea of others just like you. That way, you will sneak away and find the room where he keeps the key retrieve it and return it to its rightful place before he knows any different."
Maybe Gru would like the fact that we will be disguised Lucy though happily."That sounds simple enough." She grinned, but hearing Ramsbottom sigh made it flatter.
"One alarming thing to note though Mrs. Wilde, is that since I last talked to you both, his information seems to have been changed somewhat, in bits and pieces. At first we didn't notice, but one of our eagle eyed tech agents picked it out. It's quite obvious there has been some tampering with the file since our last meeting which you and I know wasn't long ago. Someone other than us has definitely been keeping an eye out for him." The large man sighed once again on his end of the phone, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Really?" Lucy was a little shocked to say the least.
Ramsbottom muttered something that sounded like a yes and she found herself becoming just a little more awake.
"What do you think it was changed for? Why would someone decide to change the information after we've seen it, I mean we were going to notice eventually."
"Honestly, I have no idea. It's quite pointless assuming we have him pinned as our man. Is Gru around? He needs to hear this."
Lucy glanced over at the snoring undisturbed lump underneath the cover and smirked to herself.
"He's asleep for now, but I'll talk to him. You still have the lead on VaLeceum regardless, right? I mean we've apprehended other villains that had nothing immediate on their record or anything to really suggest that they were up to no good at that point in time, yet they were still guilty of what they had been accused of. Need I remind you?" Lucy replied matter-of-factly eliciting a sharp inhale of annoyance on the other end of the line.
"No, Agent Wilde, but you do understand what this means if it turns out that he isn't guilty? If this turns out unfavorably, the AVL could be in serious trouble. Just imagine the scenario of us being in his mansion, at this social event, uninvited and we don't recover the key and he works his magic and makes it seem like he has never done a brash thing in his life!" He shivered at the mere thought.
Ramsbottom sat back covering his face with his hands, mentally immersed in the many ways that this could end up going terribly wrong.
"Don't worry Silas; we've got it under control. Gru has plenty of experience dealing with people like this VaLeceum person. And this isn't my first rodeo either." She laughed quietly causing Ramsbottom to wince.
"If he wants to pull any tricks, he will find out very quickly that we are just as adept as he is." She said with as much confidence as she could muster.
He on the other hand couldn't squelch the worried feeling in the pit of his gut, but at this point there was no choice but to do what needed to be done.
"I know you and your… husband are perfectly capable of dealing with criminals, but this isn't just a villain we are dealing with. As I explained before, he's also a very wealthy and sneaky politician. Nothing ever bodes well with politics. We need to keep our involvement with this situation as quiet as possible until we get a definitive result from our investigation. If this all goes well, this could potentially bring your ranks in the AVL up tremendously. But only if we succeed."
"That would be wonderful! Gru and I have this in the bag. We will slip in, get what we need and be out before anyone knows what's up. It'll be a piece of cake."
"I have no choice but to put my faith in your words, agent Wilde. Do not let me down." And with that he hung up, leaving Lucy with a strong sense of pride building in her chest. Since the incident with El Macho, she and Gru had been the sole 'go to' agents to stop the higher profile villains, and although Gru and Silas were never on the same page much about anything; it was quite obvious where the agency's current success was coming from.
She closed her cell phone and jumped on top of the bed and the lump that occupied it excitedly.
Gru groaned as he rolled over and opened his eyes to her beaming face staring down at him.
"What are you so happy about?" He asked rubbing his eyes as she moved to sit on top of him.
"I just got off of the phone with Silas. First of all, he's gotten us on the list for VaLeceum's gala and we are going to be disguised which will make things a lot easier for us, and second, Silas mentioned something about the fact that someone might have an eye out for this guy. That's a little unnerving, but I'm sure-"Lucy stopped her rambling as Gru put his hand up to slow her down.
"Woah, back up a meeneet, what do you mean he said someone was keeping an eye out?" He sat up quickly with a brow raised in curiosity.
"Well he said someone had tampered with the file that Silas had showed up, but he said it was only a little bit. They didn't even notice at first." Gru leaned back against the bed contemplating this new information.
"Dat seems a little odd. What would be de point in changing the file after we reviewed eet?" Lucy moved to sit by him and starred at the floor.
"That's exactly what I asked him. I guess that means we need to be on our toes for this. It could be a trap and all of this could be an attention getter for some other purpose." She rested her head against his shoulder and sighed.
"Well, we will find out tomorrow if this is all just a game."
