MrsTaters' In Peace was a heavy influence for my DH Christmas.
# = Look to Chapter 2: A New Day, of my story What Happened After for more details.
I don't own it. I couldn't seem to stretch the rest of DH too far. I've attempted a bit more here. These hints are enough, I hope.
The Lupins experience life with those around them as the war tightens its grip.
The months swept past, bringing excitement and joy as well as all too frequent bouts of fear and sorrow.
Changes occurred. They joined the Potterwatch team (which led to Dora coining the name "Chief Death Eater" when she found out about the Taboo #). Marked milestones. Heard bad news of deaths and friends on the run. Including the Mackenzies. Greyback and his pack finally caught up with Wilson in December. Fiona, heartbroken, went into labour. She didn't survive. The baby was a boy – Fiona named him Jenkins before she died. Her parents, Muggles, took the baby and left England for other parts. It was safer. They'd come back when Jenkins was eleven, when he received his Hogwarts letter. If there was a proper Hogwarts to come back to.
Remus was saddened by this; they had been good friends for a long time. It seemed the war was intent on ripping most of Remus' connections with the world to pieces. As well as, sometimes, giving him new ones. For Remus couldn't be too maudlin. As the months slipped by, Remus found himself looking for the good things. He had eschewed all 'active' Order missions – those that required fighting, or held the possibility of it. Once a week, he would do the shopping – never on the same day. He now specialised in defensive spells, which were renewed every two months around Picnic Cottage.
About once every couple of weeks, Remus would go off to the Potterwatch studio. The equipment and Lee Jordan were hosted by a different Order safehouse every time. In the early days, Tonks went with him, in part as an excuse to get out of the house. However, as time passed she wore out more quickly, and could travel less, particularly when the cold weather came in earnest.
Christmas drew closer and the war tighter. But in the small house known as Picnic Cottage, they did everything they could to embrace the former. Potterwatch did a special Christmas Eve broadcast. Carols were sung (rather badly) and the season of goodwill was celebrated by focusing on the enjoyable news rather than the darker tidings that were such a common feature normally.
Every Potterwatch broadcast, the male Weasleys seemed to take it in turns to appear. Arthur's 'nom de plume' (as Lee called their aliases) was Rudolph, as he'd started at Potterwatch the day after hearing a muggle song in the village about a reindeer.
After the show, they talked briefly. Arthur joked lightly with Remus about Dora's pregnancy. That subject was one of the few sure-fire topics of conversation at Potterwatch between the crew. Everyone grabbed on to such elements of light and held them with both hands. Arthur was no exception. Remus relished the talks with him especially. After all, he had plenty of practice. "I think every father gets nervous about having kids at some point." he said in response to Remus' question. "Just wait until you hold your baby for the first time."
Remus smiled, glad when Arthur smiled back, then turned the conversation to other things, namely Christmas plans. Arthur had been under a lot of strain lately. He had been trying to keep his job in a Ministry that was steadily growing more and more openly dark. He was worried about the strain "his girls" were under, but he also mentioned that Bill and Fleur were spending Christmas at home. This made Remus slightly uncomfortable; he and Tonks had visited Bill and Fleur's a week ago and found an unexpected houseguest who had been very sorry for himself. He'd promised not to say anything, though he'd been as understanding as possible.
It was maddening, knowing Harry was out there having to sort things out without any adult help. If only… Remus sighed, and hoped fervently they were having a good Christmas at least.
Eventually, Remus took his leave of the Potterwatch crew and headed for 'home'. Before he went to the cottage though, he stopped at a Muggle church in the village square. He'd promised Dora and Andromeda that he would try and contact Ted tonight, to convince him to come home.
But it was not to be.
With a heavy heart, Remus went home late. He spoke with Andromeda, then, as the clock struck midnight he went to Dora. They talked quietly, Remus stroking her rounded belly. Sometimes it was still hard to believe that he would be a father in April. Other times, it was all too real.
Tonight, as Christmas Eve blended into Christmas Day, the world seemed full of promise and hope. Remus fell asleep with his heart full, thinking of the year to come. In such magical times as the hours between midnight and dawn at Christmas, anything seemed possible.
Even the end of the war.
Phew. I wasn't quite expecting that. Well, there you go.
