I was anxious on the ride back to Forks. I remembered some things in my past, which I had forgotten, but why did I forget them at all? Why had I forgotten all of the work that I had done with the people of my coven. What I could remember couldn't tell me these things, but I hoped as soon as I got back to Forks that Catya could fill in the blanks.
"Bella." Esme sounded concerned.
"Uh, yeah?" I reluctantly pulled out of my thoughts.
"Who's Catya?"
Should I tell Esme the truth? Did I even know the truth? I knew the basics, but I really couldn't get in depth with what was going on let alone who Catya was before I could fully remember everything in my past. My instincts were to lie about it, but I'm sure all of the Cullens', save for Rosalie, would want to know who Catya was. I decided to tell her the truth, which was new territory for me.
"She's a woman in my coven."
"When you say coven do you mean-"
I cut her off. "Yes, I mean it in the traditional sense. I am in a coven of witches and am, myself, a witch."
I didn't have to see her face to know that she had a look of amazement on her face. I hoped that because she was a vampire that she would be open to the idea of witches. It wouldn't matter if she thought I was delusional, because I could prove my claims, but it would save time.
"When did you become a member of this coven?"
I bit my lip nervously, "Honestly, I don't know. I seem to have had a lapse in memory. I only remember bits and pieces. I am missing a huge gap of my past and it seems like some of my memories have been replaced. Its as though I've been living under an illusion for the last eight months."
It was a while before Esme responded. I wasn't exactly measuring time, but we were at least ΒΌ of the way back to forks by time she began to talk again.
"You said you remember bits and pieces. Could you elaborate on that."
"Yes." I began. "The parts which I remember are very vivid like I was watching it through someone else' eyes. I remember being able to cripple someone while glaring at them, destroying malicious entities, specific moments with members of my coven, and being trapped in a fire with no way out."
"Could you explain more in depth about these malicious entities and the fire you were trapped in?"
"The Malicious entities took on two forms: grotesque and normal looking. The grotesque ones looked kind of like gargoyles that are on the sides of some churches, but in human size. The ones that looked normal could not be differentiated from human beings by their looks, but could be by differentiated by their actions and powers." I took a few breaths before beginning to talk about the fire. "Regarding the fire I remember feeling frantic. I was repeating a set of words of a foreign language of which I am not sure of. The most definitive thing I remember about the fire is what the leader of the people who set the fire said."
"What did he say" Esme sounded concerned.
I sighed before speaking again. "He said, "Thou shalt not allow a witch to live."
Esme gasped at the words that I repeated. I knew it would have an effect. I didn't even want to say it, for it was such an extreme expression for anyone to utter out of their mouth. In the back of my mind I had a theory of who these group of people were; witch-hunters. I remember, in high-school, reading about how witch-hunters used biblical verses to justify their savagery and that verse was one of the most common ones they used.
Not much was said after that. I'm pretty sure the topic wasn't far from her mind, but she didn't want to press any further. Its just as well, I didn't feel like talking about any of this until I had more information. We ended up arriving forty-five minutes later with Catya waiting at the entrance.
The vision, which I seen Catya in did no justice to seeing her in the flesh. She was very beautiful. She had black hair with blue eyes, pale skin, and full lips. Her long black hair was pulled up into tight ponytail that reached down to the middle of her back. She looked like a mix between Phoebe Tonkin and Angelina Jolie.
"I'll put the groceries away. You go ahead." Esme offered.
"Thanks." I muttered.
I wasn't going to accept the offer, but I really needed to talk to Catya so I could make sense of what was going on.
I exited the car and walked up to Catya.
"Let's go" She smirked as she put her arm around my shoulder as we walked into the house. "After we do the ritual we will have to do something about your hair."
"Ritual?" I wondered.
She sighed irritably. "Try to keep up! We are going upstairs to perform the ritual that will restore your memory."
I was a little apprehensive about doing the ritual, but something inside me, probably intuition, told me that I had nothing to worry about and that this was the right thing to do.
"Come on. You know you can trust me." she encouraged.
I didn't hear anything, but one of the Cullens' must have said something snarky, because Catya became defensive.
"Listen glitter-for-skin, this is witch stuff. Mind your own fucking business unless I want to know about vampire habits."
There was a few choice words from Edward and then we went upstairs to perform the ritual.
Catya's POV
This Bella was so disoriented and confused. I'm so ready to do this ritual. It would return her to her true self; not this shy shell of who she once was. She was never nearly as aggressive as I am, but she was never this docile or submissive. She was always outspoken and would have bit my head off if I ever told her what to do.
Even more confusion was evoked when I opened the door to the room, which were doing the ritual in.
"Uh, I don't understand." Bella said.
"Trust me. We will do everything. All you have to do is sit in the middle of that symbol." I pointed toward the symbol. "and stay quiet until the ritual is complete."
"How will I know when it's done?"
"You will know. All your memory that you are missing will come flooding back to you." Morgan interjected.
"Are you sure this is going to work?"
I contained my irritation, for if I yelled at her I knew we would never get this spell done. She would probably not feel safe and leave, which would take us further away from our ultimate goal; killing the demon Gahjidi.
"Positive. Now Sit!" I gave her a small push towards the symbol.
She finally complied and sat in the middle of the hexagram. Morgan kneeled down next to her to give her further instructions before the ritual.
"Sit straight and focus on breathing. Close your eyes and try to clear your mind. If a thought comes just let it pass. This ritual will take an hour and it's imperative that you do not speak until it is complete."
I had no idea if she was following the directions that Morgan gave to her, for I was lighting the two white candles, that were in two opposite corners of the hexagram, which would be needed for this ritual to work. I looked up from the candle, which was facing her, to see that Bella was following the directions that Morgan gave her.
"We're ready. Let's Begin." I grinned.
Bella POV
I focused on breathing and expelling all thoughts. Everyone began chanting less than a minute after I began to meditate. After a few minutes I successfully was able to expel the need to keep track of time, which was my last distraction. The hour didn't seem as long as it was. It seemed more like fifteen minutes than an hour.
Throughout the ritual I began seeing different memories that I had, obviously, forgotten. The last, I'm assuming, fifteen minutes produced the most intense part of the ritual. It wasn't like before, in Port Angeles, when I felt like I was watching a film. This time every memory felt like it was me and not some actor playing the role of me. The last memory, the memory of the fire, flicked through my head which was even more vivid and life-like than it had been the first time. I could feel the flames as they touched my skin as well as the tears that were falling off my face. I could understand the words I was saying that I had thought were foreign when I had heard them earlier. I was cursing the people who were trying to kill me. The last thing I remember is belting out a blood curdling screaming before awakening from all the memories. I soon came to the realization that the ritual was finished and opened my eyes.
Upon opening my eyes I felt different. It was like the last eight months hadn't happened. I felt reborn in a way. The Bella that I had been for the last eight months seemed like a different person. The Bella I am now and the one I was before were like two different realities. I am now stronger, more opinionated, dominant, and powerful. While I was far from the old me I still had some of the same attributes that I had before: kindness, independence, sarcasm, and self-sufficiency. From my existent memories of the past four years I could tell that I had my fair-share of negative attributes as well: Willful Insolence, irritable, strong-willed, as well as a tendency to babble.
"Need a hand" Catya extended her hand.
"No, I'm good"
I stood up and joined the rest of my coven.
"Did we get the information we needed?" I asked.
"Yes, because of the illusion we were able to get the information we needed about Gahjidi." Morgan answered.
"Does the new information tell us how to kill him?"
"Not exactly, but-"
"Not exactly?" I cut her off. "I spend eight months under an illusion, because I thought you could get the information that would aide us in killing him and you don't have it!"
Catya looked upon me with annoyance. "You didn't let her finish."
Morgan paused for a second before continuing. "While we didn't find anything that would definitively kill him we did find something that might help. One writing spoke of his weaknesses, which includes various plants and items."
"Sorry" I apologized for my rashness. "Do we have all of these items on hand?"
"We have most of them. The ones we don't have we cannot find."
"Do you have a list of the items?"
"Yes, it's in my bag, downstairs."
We started to walk towards the staircase. I felt a familiar hand tugging me away from my goal of going downstairs. I smiled when I felt the rough texture of the hand. It was Benjamin, the only male member of the coven.
"Still pining over me" I smirked.
"Yeah right. You are the one who is obsessed with me."
I stepped closer in an effort to intimidate him. "You are severely mistaken." I whispered slowly.
"Then why are you this close."
I rolled my eyes. "To prove a point. Now, lets go!"
I continued to walk down the hall until I reached the stairs, which I walked down. I heard Benjamin's footsteps trailing after me.
"Seriously though" He began when he caught up with me. "it's good to have you back."
Still in a playful and somewhat cocky mood I replied, "It is isn't it."
That was the last interaction we had before going down the stairs. It appears that I won the mind-game we were both playing. Upon reaching the first floor of the house I was met with a lot more vampires than were there previously.
There were six new vampires. Three of them were blond; Two of them had dark hair; and one of them had a sandy twinge to his hair. All appeared, by eye color, to be vegetarians except for the guy with the sandy colored hair.
"Bella, this is the Denali coven." Esme me to them, followed by them introducing themselves individually.
"Why are they hear?" I questioned Esme.
I could hear several short humorless laughs that probably weren't intended to be heard, but witches had stronger hearing than average humans. Obviously they were surprised at my bluntness.
"They came for a visit" Carlisle interjected.
I nodded in understanding.
"Not to be rude, but what are you? You all have very powerful gifts. This added with our inability to hear what you did or said upstairs and your blood being repulsive to all of us leads me to think you aren't exactly human." Eleazar explained.
I conferred it with my coven.
"There aren't any rules against telling vampires" Morgan offered to the pro argument.
Catya laughed darkly. "Do you really think we can trust strangers, Morgan?"
"They're not totally strangers" Morgan glanced at me. "I mean you know them pretty well, right Bella?"
"Look, our energy should not be focused on giving a history lesson of our kind. We need to find these items so that we have something when we attack Gahjidi."
"Why don't we vote on it." Benjamin suggested.
"That's actually a good idea." I added.
"Uh, fine." Catya said with attitude. "I vote no. We don't know these glitter-bugs and they could purposely use what they know about us against us."
"No" Ariana put simply.
"Yes, a little extra fire-power wouldn't hurt." Benjamin said.
I laughed softly at the pun Benjamin used.
"Yes, obviously" Morgan chirped.
It was now my turn. I was hoping it didn't come down to this. It didn't matter that I'd have some people upset as me as much as it mattered that this would probably form a rift between myself and other coven mates.
"I'm going to say yes, but as the tie-breaker I'm putting down rules of how this is going to go down. First of all, we are going to look at that list before we say anything. Second, things that look bad on us we will not be discussing unless we have to. Lastly, we will not and I repeat we will not be telling them that Benjamin and I are not fully human. Got it?"
"Why?" Benjamin asked.
"Because, it will cause further conflict and will require us to fully tell them everything and I will not have them use that power against us!"
There were no further questions and they seemed to all agree to my conditions.
"We'll meet back here in 5 and will explain everything." I addressed the vampires.
I looked at the list of the things which could help weaken, and hopefully kill, Gahjidi. The following things were on the list:
1.) Amorphophallus titanum
2.) Blood of a Labrador duck
3.) one feather from a Feng-Huang
I laughed. "I can see why you were unable to get these things. This form of duck has been extinct for at least one-hundred years and the Feng-Huang is legendary and only appears at certain times."
"What about the flower?" Ariana inquired.
"The flower is huge. There is no way we could get the whole thing. We'd have to cut off a small chunk of it. Amazingly enough, this would be the easiest of all to get. Although, it will require flying to Sumatra to find the plant."
"Hopefully we can get all of these things before Gahjidi can see again; in two weeks." Ariana sighed.
I looked upon my watch to see how much time we had left. "We got like a minute left. Do any of you want to go over anything?"
"I think you should change" Catya said with slight condescension.
I look down to see my outfit and I began to see her point. I can't be giving an informative speech on witchcraft and the politics and fundamentals of it in this outfit. I have got to change immediately. I looked around the room until I saw my suitcase. Alice must have brought it with her when she was under the assumption I would be staying with her. Knowing her she probably would have drug me to a designer shop and make me buy dozens of outfits and then would have burned the contents of that suitcase.
"Yeah, seriously the clothes in that suitcase need to be burned on an altar dedicated to the god of bad taste. I have an outfit for you from before the illusion when you had good taste." Catya smirked.
I rolled my eyes. Sometimes she could be a real bitch and a half. I turned around to see that everyone ,excluding Benjamin and Catya, seemed to leave so that I could change.
"Here." Catya handed me what she had took from my closet.
It was a black tank-top and machine jeans and she kindly added the footwear I wore, previous to the illusion, with every outfit; knee-high black-leather stiletto boots. I love these boots.
"You need to get out" I told Benjamin once I could look away from the boots.
He grumbled, but I soon got him to leave. Once he was gone I unzipped the, atrocious, top that I had on which revealed a simple black bra. I could feel Catya's lecherous eyes on me.
"What?" I smiled.
"Nothing, just seeing you like this brings up old memories. We could go there again if you'd like" she grinned with seduction on her mind.
"As tempting as that is I don't think that's a good idea. We need to focus on our obligation and not on our desires." I said as I slipped the tank-top over my head and down my chest.
Catya shrugged it off. "It was worth a try."
I quickly changed into the jeans and stilettos. After that I looked into the mirror to see if I was happy with the way I looked. I would have killed for a necklace, but fuck it I'm good.
"Ready?"
"To school their asses, you bet." I spoke confidently.
I'm glad I got this one out quickly. The next chapter will be explaining the politics of witches and the coven and the backstory mainly. I tweaked Benjamin's character a bit in that he's not a vampire, but his personality probably won't differ that much. In other news you got your first glimpse of Catya in this chapter and I think there will be mixed feelings about her. Tell me what you think about this chapter, changes to Benjamin, New Characters: Catya and Morgan, Ariana and other things in this chapter. I will have the next chapter out at the latest 5:00 pm on the following Monday, but I hope to have it out sooner.
