Chapter 5

Recap: "Why didn't you tell me?" I ask and she shrugs. "I haven't seen you in two years and, I was afraid. I mean you always get so mad, I was afraid you'd hurt someone or get arrested or something," She says and I sigh, getting up and walking over to her, pulling her into my arms. She cries quietly into my shirt and I hold her closer. "Never keep something like this from me again," I say and she nods.

Soul's POV

After the fight, we all ate dinner then went to bed. We all slept on the floor in the living room of Shigure's house and I made sure to tuck Kisa securely into my arms. Kisa has school today and I'm going to take her to make sure the kids don't pick on her. I might even stay and observe the class. "Soul! You're going to embarrass her!" Maka says when she hears about my plans. "No I won't. I've never embarrassed Kisa in her life. I just want to make things better for her," I say and Maka sighs. "Well, she is your sister so I guess I can't really tell you what to do with her," She says and I smile a toothy smile, hugging her lightly, careful not to let our chests touch so I don't transform. "Wanna come?" I ask and she smiles, nodding slightly. "Kisa? Are you ready?" I shout and Kisa comes running out of the house with Hiro following slowly after her. "Yes we're ready!" She says cheerily and I smile, ruffling her hair. "Great, let's go," I say and she nods, leading the way. We finally reach her school and she gets a nervous look on her face, so I gently lace my fingers through hers and she gives me a grateful look.

We walk into the classroom and I release her hand as she and Hiro go to sit down. Immediately the kids start to whisper and point at Kisa, causing me to frown. Maka puts her hand on my shoulder and guides me over to the teacher. "Hello? Can I help you?" She asks and I look at Maka. "Yes, hi. I'm Maka Albarn and this is Soul Ev- Sohma," She says, correcting herself. "Oh! Are you related to Kisa or Hiro?" The teacher asks and I nod. "Yes ma'am. I'm Kisa's older brother, and we were wondering if we could stay and observe your class for the day," I say and the teacher looks at me warily. "I don't know-" "Please? I haven't seen my little sister in 2 years and I heard about her school troubles, so I want to make sure she's ok, just for today," I explain and the teacher frowns. "Oh alright, but just for today, and I expect you won't do anything to distract my students either!" She says and Maka smiles. "We won't," She assures her and the teacher nods. "Alright, take a seat at the back please," She commands and we nod, going to the back of the classroom. Kisa looks at me quizzically, but I point to the front of the classroom, telling her to pay attention. She nods and turns to the front of the class as the teacher begins to start an math lesson.

"Alright class, who can tell me what we were learning last time you were here?" The teacher asks and Kisa timidly raises her hand. "Yes, Kisa." "Um, well, we were learning about probability," She murmurs and giggles erupt throughout the class, puzzling me. What did she say that was so funny? "Precisely! Now, would you like to come up here and answer the first question?" The teacher asks and Kisa quickly scurries to the front of the classroom and answers the question on the board. I hear more giggles erupt and I even hear a few comments. "Look at her hair! It's such a weird color!" One girl says. "Yeah and her eyes!" Another girl adds. "Well, she is a weird girl!" A boy sneers and I stand up with fists clenched. Maka grabs my arm and pulls me back so I don't do anything too rash. "Is there a problem Mr. Sohma?" The teacher asks me and I glare at her, wanting to snap at her about how she should be scolding her class for picking on another student, but I bite my tongue and shake my head. "Nope. No problem at all," I spit through clenched teeth and the teacher tsks and turns back to the board to continue her lesson. Kisa locks eyes with me and I smile reassuringly at her. She nods and turns back to the lesson, ignoring all of the snide comments about her from her classmates.

Finally the bell rings and the teacher dismisses the class. They scurry out of the room and to their next class. The day continues the same. Kisa answering most of the questions asked, ignoring the kids picking on her, me getting angry, and Maka having to hold me back from doing anything. At one point, Hiro got fed up with the kids teasing Kisa and lashed out at them, resulting in getting sent to the principle's office. The kids then proceeded to whisper about how stupid and crazy Hiro was to stick up for the freak and I almost lost my cool. Lunch time finally came and Maka and I sat with Kisa and Hiro while they ate. "How're you holding up Kise?" I ask her and she smiles slightly. "I'm fine. I'm used to it by now," She mumbles and I frown. "But you shouldn't have to be used to it! This shouldn't be happening to you! You're the sweetest girl I've ever met! Why do the other kids pick on you?" I ask and Kisa smiles sadly. "Because I'm different, but it's ok. I guess that's just another thing that comes with the curse," She says and Maka frowns. "What curse?" She asks and Kisa gasps slightly, realizing her slip up.

I forgot that Maka didn't know about the curse. "Um, that's just what Kisa says. She's talking about how she was born with an odd hair color. She isn't an albino like Wes and I, so she was put with an equally odd colored hair and she calls it our curse," I quickly lie and Kisa nods along with me. "Oh, well you shouldn't call it that Kisa! You're hair color is lovely!" Maka says and Kisa blushes. "Thank you Maka," She mumbles embarrassedly. The bell rings and we walk outside for recess. Maka and I sit in the grass with Kisa and Hiro, just talking, until a group of girls walk up to us. "Hey freak, who're these people? You're body gaurds? What can't take care of yourself? Pathetic," the girl who looks to be the leader of the group sneers at Kisa and I feel my anger spike.

"Go be a bitch to someone else Amaya," Hiro spits and she glares at him. "Who said I was talking to you Hiro?" She hisses and flips her bright red hair over her shoulder. "Are you gonna answer me freak? I asked you who these people are?" Amaya spits at Kisa and I jump up. "Hey kids, back off. What's your problem?" I growl and she gasps, taken aback by my outburst. "I have no problem. I just wanna know why the freak has some old guy protecting her!" Amaya sneers at me and Kisa glares at her, standing up. "Soul nii-san is 18 and he is not protecting me!" She says and Amaya glares at her. "Who said you could speak?" She hisses and I glare at her. "Um, you did," Maka points out and Amaya smirks at her. "Shut up little girl. You should respect your superiors!" The girl sneers, flipping her hair and Maka's jaw drops. "Look who's talking! I'm 16, you're what? 11? You should learn to respect people older than you," Maka growls and the girl raises her eyebrows. "Really? I don't believe you're 16. I mean, c'mon. Who ever heard of an 16 year old who isn't even an A cup yet?" She cackles and I widen my eyes. Not cool. I'm the only one allowed to tease Maka about her chest size, and that's just because we're partners. "Whoever heard of an 11 year old who was so rude? Didn't your parents ever teach you manners?" Maka fires back.

By now, the rest of the school have gathered around us and Kisa has ducked behind Hiro nervously. "I'm 12!" Amaya shouts in anger and Maka rolls her eyes. "Whatever, but that doesn't excuse your lack of manners!" "Well look who's talking! You're arguing with a 12 year old." Maka glares at the little girl and I place a hand on her shoulder to calm her. "And you're picking on an innocent girl," I say and Amaya snaps her head to glare at me. "Who said anything to you?" She hisses and I clench my fists. "I wasn't aware that someone had to talk to me for me to speak," I snap and she scoffs. "And why do you all pick on Kisa anyway?" I ask and Amaya raises her eyebrows. "Duh! She's different! Have you seen her hair and eye color?" "Yes and it's a beautiful color. Besides, it's not like she can help it. She was born with that color hair. And being different isn't a bad thing, it just shows how she is her own person, and not just another stupid little girl." The other students now have their full attention on me and I even see a few guilty looks on some of the their faces.

"Plus, you have bright red hair, what makes you better than Kisa?" I point out and Amaya scoffs. "I dyed it, duh. My natural hair color is black. The normal, not weird color," She says and I roll my eyes. "That just means that you're fake. Kisa isn't, because she doesn't try to hide her beautiful and unique hair color," I say and Amaya glares at me. "And to all of you, stop picking on my little sister! She can't help how she looks, but that doesn't' give to a reason to pick on her!" I say to the other kids and they all look down guiltily. Well, all except for Amaya. She shrieks in annoyance and stomps away, her posse scurrying after her. All of the other kids walk up and smile at Kisa, asking her to play with them. She runs off happily and I smile. "That girl really needs to learn to take her foot out of her mouth," Maka grumbles and I nod in agreement. We stay the rest of the day, to make sure that nothing else happens, and nothing does.

All of the kids are nice to Kisa now. Nothing much happens, except for that Amaya girl trying to get people to laugh at Kisa and start drama, but they all ignore her. As we're walking home, Kisa tugs on my shirt and I crouch down to her level. She kisses me on the cheek and hugs me. "Thank you for helping me nii-san, I love you," She whispers and I squeeze her tightly. "You're welcome, I love you too."
