Chloe watches a young she-wolf down in the valley below her. She followed the wolf's body language and saw the anger rolling off her in waves, Chloe could nearly taste the acidic anger from her high vantage point. All these things pointed to one conclusion; that she-wolf was Maya, and she knew Beca was with the pack. Chloe was hiding in the brush near the top of the valley, she had followed a young doe to the point, intent on chasing the deer down till it became dinner for the pack. However the scent of a new wolf had caused her to stop. Chloe understood why Maya was considered such a threat but at the same time wasn't. The wolf was small, would not win a fight if it came down to that, but the anger built up inside her was a ticking time bomb, enough to destroy everything the pack loved, Maya would destroy herself before releasing what she had done.

"I see you've stumbled upon Maya." Gran says spooking Chloe, Chloe looks over her shoulder at the older wolf.

"I have, she hasn't noticed me though." Chloe looks back to the young wolf.

"She won't, Maya never could see anything pass the tip of her nose." Gran lays in the brush next to Chloe watching her granddaughter pace in the valley.

"Why does she hate Beca so much?" Chloe asks, laying her head on her paws, thinking maybe Maya is just hurt and lost, that she can be helped.

"Let's walk." Gran says she nudges Chloe as she stands; they walk shoulder to shoulder through the woods. "When Beca and Maya were younger, both living here with their parents, attending the local school, they had a friend Emery. Emery was a sweet boy, and he knew about their wolves, it was an accident really, Maya had changed in front of him when she got too excited one day. He never said a thing about it. However Maya is a few years older than Beca, and Beca was Emery's age. Soon Beca and Emery became inseparable, Maya had told them they were childish often and they stopped allowing her to hang out with them. One day Beca was in her wolf form beside Emery, walking him back to his house, Maya was in the woods. Beca had noticed Maya and snapped her jaws at her trying to back her back into the woods. Maya did turn tail and run into the woods, but had nipped Emery before doing so, Beca was infuriated, she chased after Maya thinking Emery would run inside to get his bite taken care of. Maya turned back around when she knew she was out of sight of Beca, she ran back to where Emery was." Gran stops, she sits down and waits for Chloe to follow. "Maya was always jealous over everything, and Emery choosing Beca was hard on her. I kept telling her that she needed to find friends her own age. Maya ran back to Emery, she killed the boy."

"Why didn't anyone do anything about her?" Chloe asks.

"I knew back then that she was family, she was to be protected. I urged the local humans to hunt down a rogue bear running around, telling them the bear killed the child. I told the parents of Emery what really happened and promised them that Maya would be under my watch constantly so as not to ever lose another child. They agreed that ruining her life over the loss of their son was not what they wanted. They were good people, maybe too good."

"So you kept Maya under your careful watch all this time knowing she was capable of killing others."

"I felt that family bonds were strong and could help her. I was wrong; she has just gotten more and more out of control."

"Is this why Beca and Maya don't get along?"

"Beca was devastated after losing Emery, her parents decided to move out of the pack and raise her away from us. They lost trust in us. I asked Warren to allow Beca to make her own mind up over if she wanted to be pack leader one day or not, he granted me that. I had spoken with her and Maya right before they moved and told them what I had decided about leader, Maya attacked Beca." Gran sighed. "I should have banished her then, knowing how far unhinged she was. I still felt like I could fix it. I was stubborn in a time I should have realized I was wrong."

"Family ties are strong, you had faith. There was no way you could have known she wouldn't have out grown it."

"You have a lot of faith for one of our kind."

"You forget what family I come from."

"Beale, your legacy runs deep."

"So does your family's. Yet for your historian title of the family you certainly have a granddaughter that doesn't remember the stories well." Chloe smiles as they stop at the edge of the clearing watching the pack ahead of them. Beca had her head down by her front paws, her back legs standing right up, she wiggled her back end as the young cubs jumped all over her head, one biting down on her ear.

"Beca wasn't here to learn the stories, her father knows them yet he chose not to share them, he never could retell them correctly. He lacked the patience to learn." Gran says, she nudges Chloe's shoulder with the top of her head. "Now go enjoy your time with Beca." She nods toward her granddaughter and Chloe nods, bushing against the older wolf as she walks away.

"You forgot something in that story of yours." Frank steps out of the shade and up to his sibling.

"She doesn't need to know that just yet."

"You can't hide it forever, not from Warren or Beca."

"If the prophecy is true we both know how it will end."

"Do we? Because I always thought my daughter was the stronger one."

"Trust me Frank, family ties run stronger than we think."
