A/N: Sorry I haven't updated in a while. Honestly, I forgot all about this story XD Good thing I had this chapter done already. I'm too lazy to go over this, and I wrote this ages ago, so sorry if it's bland or has any mistakes in it. This was my last pre-made chapter, so hopefully, I'll write the next one soon if at all. Enjoy!
Chapter 12: The Fifth Wheel
Wally took another bite of his omelet with a bad mood. He was sitting with Charles and Caleb, but he still felt pretty lonely without Nigel or Abby and Hoagie, or even Kuki.
He felt his stomach churn at the thought of her, but he thought it was probably because of how much bacon he had eaten earlier.
They had been avoiding him for a week now, and he only got to talk to Nigel when they were back at the dorm. He was the fifth wheel and he couldn't understand why. He hadn't had a fight with either of them or spread rumors.
Normally, they would have greeted him and invited him into their conversations, but now, they always started to speak in hushed voices whenever he passed by.
It annoyed him greatly, and ever since then, he had tried to get their attention, but to no avail. It was as if he didn't exist anymore, and it really annoyed him.
"Hey, Wally! Did you hear?"
Wally was interrupted from his thoughts by Caleb, who joined him and Charles at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall. They were having lunch, and as usual, Nigel and Kuki were loitering around the Ravenclaw table were Hoagie and Abby were finishing up their food. Soon, they would all walk off together to who knows where and leave him behind as usual.
"Hear what?!" he snapped, his patience wearing thin.
"Gosh!" Caleb exclaimed. "I just wanted to tell ya if you heard that Quidditch tryouts are today! I'm going down to the field to watch."
This news raised Wally's spirits. If he got onto the Quidditch team, there was no way that he wouldn't be noticed. He played Qudditch all the time in his back yard with his run-down broom, and he was pretty good. He even beat Nigel whenever he came especially liked being beater because he had an excuse to hit something.
His intentions were apparently obvious because Caleb and Charles tried to talk him out of it even though he hadn't mentioned it at all.
"C'mon, Wally! No one has managed a spot on the Quidditch team during their first year since Harry Potter was here!" Caleb argued.
"Well, it was bound to happen sometime," Wally retorted, already heading down to the dormitories to fetch his crummy broom.
"You'll be humiliated in front of the whole school!" Charles tried in Caleb's place.
"You guys don't give me enough credit. Just because I'm cruddy at everything else and just cuz I'm not the tallest guy here doesn't mean I'm bad at everything! Quidditch is just one of those things."
Caleb and Charles didn't say anything else as Wally retrieved his broom and walked down to the Quidditch pitch.
The field was teeming with hopeful Gryffindor students who were trying out. Some were good, some were not so good. The team captain this year was Jace West, a sixth year who was one of the hardest people to impress Wally had ever seen. Even some kids who had a chance were stared down upon by him.
The chasers, two kids from last year and a lucky third-year, were decided, and so was the seeker, a fifth-year with a lean body and clean, parted hair. The beaters were next, and Charles and Caleb tried once more to change his mind at the last minute, and again failed.
Jace was one of the beaters, so that spot was already taken. Therefore, there was only one spot left, and Wally was determined to make it his.
There were about five people trying out including himself, so he had a fair enough chance to beat them all. Two fourth-years went first, one doing fine, another doing not so well. Then, it was his turn.
Some of the people in the crowd laughed at him, but that didn't dampen his spirits. As far as he was concerned, he already had this position in his bag.
Jace didn't question him when he mounted his broom and flew up to the hoop level. He only stared as he did to everyone else. Again, he repeated, "When I let the bludger loose, I want you to hit it as hard as you can. The ball will return automatically afterwards, and this time, you aim for the flying dummy. You hit it, or you're out. Got it?"
Wally nodded, gripping his bat even harder. He would prove to everyone that he was just as capable as anybody else.
Jace blew his whistle and undid the clasp holding down the bludger. The ball zoomed at an incredible speed towards Wally, but he was ready for it. Following the ball with his eyes, he connected the bat to the ball and it struck with a tremendous bang.
Some of the onlookers seemed a bit impressed, but it wasn't over yet. The bludger traveled a good dozen yards, and then flew towards him again. He caught sight of the poorly made dummy, charmed to barely hold on to a worn out broomstick. It was flying fast, so he could only assume that it was playing the part of a chaser.
Wally took aim as the ball came near and swung his club around one more time, hitting its target easily. Now, the crowd began to chant. However, Wally was only just taking in this support when Jace called out, "One more special test, I want you to dodge this next one, and then turn around and hit it."
Another bludger was let out and it came at him so quickly, that his hair swayed as if in a storm when it passed by. Wally turned around like lightning and came up with a daring idea. He hit it straight at Jace as hard as he can, and even the captain had trouble avoiding it.
Wally then dismounted his broom and waited patiently on the benches. Jace didn't say anything when he was done, but he could tell that he hadn't been expecting that last part.
The other two Gryffindors had their turn, both not even coming close, and then they were ordered to stand in a line.
Jace approached them slowly, and observed every one of them like a hawk. Then said, "Some of you did good, some great, and some downright horrible. However, you all know perfectly well that a first-year got you all beat. Welcome to the team, Wally. Remember we have practice on Wednesday."
And that was it. He just turned around and left. Wally wasn't surprised when his friends lifted him up on their shoulders or when they chanted a little diddy. All he cared about was that he was going to make Hogwarts history, right next to Harry Potter.
