"You always were Gran's little princess weren't you?" Maya snarls circling around the stake in the ground as I reveal myself from the thick woods.
"Change back so they'd don't put a shock collar on you Maya." I say, even if she is acting this way and has been so terrible over the years she is still my cousin and the thought of one of those collars on her just doesn't sit well.
"Fuck you! Fuck the whole pack! I didn't do anything!" Maya yells lunging at me, the chain keeping her back.
"Maya stop denying it!"
"Christ! Beca you remember that day in the woods?"
"It was years ago." I sigh not wanting to drag up the bad memories.
"Close your eyes, think." Maya sits down, waiting for me to do the same. I roll my eyes but sit in front of her. "Eyes." I listen to her and close them. "Tell me what you are doing."
"I'm walking along side Emery, he's running his hand through my fur."
"What's it smell like?"
"A fresh spring rain, the ground is still damp, the birds and frogs are making a lot of noise." I can't help but smile. "Emery is talking about how he is going to try out for swim team."
"Good, now what happened right before you knew I was there?"
"A twig snapped, that's when I saw you. You were following along in the woods a stone's throw away from us."
"Good, what's it smell like now?"
"You, and spring, sadness, jealously… and rage." I shake my head a little trying to clear my thoughts. "You jump at Emery, and bite his hand… but it wasn't that deep. I start to chase you. I can smell you, you reek of fear, I hear someone else… it must be Emery behind me… it can't be its too big." I start breathing faster. "I lose sight of you, but I smell your trail still, you turned around. I follow your trail… and cross another, I can't place it, I smell Emery. He's terrified. That's when I find you, standing over him. You are shaking, and whimpering, nudging him."
"Who do you smell?"
"I don't know, it's strong… I know it, but can't place it."
"Think Beca!" My eyes snap open, the same scent is over powering my nose now.
"Me." I see Gran standing behind Maya, a murderous look on her face.
"Gran… Gran killed Emery." I yell and Maya sobs nodding, finally someone knew the truth.
"He was bad for you two! Splitting up the grandchildren I would need to keep this pack strong! Keep a female in power." Gran is pacing between the two of us, fur on her shoulders raised. "I knew Maya would never be alpha that's why I framed her, and you, Beca, were too young and stupid at the time to realize what really happened. You always only saw what was right in front of your snout."
"Your own family, nothing is more important than family. You taught us that." I yell back and she laughs.
"You idiot, it was never about family, the strength of the pack and keeping the bloodlines going were all that mattered. Maya's blood was too muddled with weakness, you…" Gran's eyes rest back upon me and I can't help but feel a shiver run through my body. "You were a runt, sure, but you had this spark, I wanted to mold you into the perfect little alpha to take my place. Then your mother found out about my plans, and faced my anger and asked your father to leave. She wanted you away from this hostility, to protect you from me! From your destiny!"
"My mother was right, I never would have wanted to take over your spot had I known what you had done. Maya was pushed to this state, you created this mess. You should pay for it."
"The police have their culprit, they would never look my direction. I led them to the body, and to Maya, I was involved from the start."
"Your cockiness is misplaced Gran, police now are different. This is too big just to push under a rug. International news really. All because you chose to allow us to reveal ourselves to the world. Now you think that the world won't watch this? Won't figure out the truth I speak when I tell them what really happened? How I felt betrayed when I realized that my own grandmother framed my cousin, that for years I hated my own blood for killing my friend when really my cousin was just as wounded as I was."
"No one will believe it."
"They will when I step down from next in line and put Maya in my place. I'll right this wrong you created."
"You can't do that!" Gran screams, her jaws snapping at mine.
"I can, I will." I walk over to Maya. "Let's get you out of here."
"You can't leave here." Gran snarls. "I won't let you."
"They can, and they will." Stone steps into the harsh light of the pen. "This has gone on long enough." I've never seen Stone stand up to Gran. "I will stand beside Beca and Maya if it comes down to it. This ends now."
