Murphy's Law-
After two years of living in Death City, Soul Eater Evans had earned himself a nickname. It was mostly used by Black*Star after a particularly horrible kill to death ratio when they played video games. Occasionally Maka would tease him about it, and affectionately use it to refer to him. Soul absolutely hated it.
He knew he tended to get caught in the rain, trip over his own feet at the most inopportune moments and had locked himself out of the apartment more times than he could count. That didn't mean he deserved that vile nickname.
He didn't even know what it meant in the beginning. He was 14 years old and Maka had found him sitting outside the apartment, soaking wet with a facial expression akin to a pissed off tabby. She had giggled and asked what was wrong.
Flinging his hands up in the air, he launched into his terrible tale. He was walking home from his extra lessons, which were SO not his fault; He shouldn't have been lumped into the juvenile havoc that Black*Star had caused. When a passing car had swung around the corner and drenched him in the two day old rain water on the street. Could it get any worse?! Yes, yes it could. He realized he had forgotten his keys on a desk inside the Academy, so he tromped all the way back to the school.
Only to realize the damn school was already. Fucking. Closed.
"So I walked all the way back only to remember that you were out with Tsubaki and so I've been waiting here for you. For over an hour."
Maka put a hand up to her mouth, trying to conceal her giggling. Soul growled, clenching his jaw and biting his cheek in the process. He yelped in surprise and cradled his face with a hand.
"Don't you dare say a word!"
Maka busted out laughing, holding onto her stomach and doubling over. Soul stood up with a huff, snatching the keys from her hand,
"This has been the crappiest day ever, and you're just laughing at me! Thanks a lot, partner."
Maka wiped a tear from her eye and followed him into the house. She patted him on the head, still chuckling, "Ohh, poor Murphy. I'm sorry your day was so horrible."
Soul raised an eyebrow at her, pulling off his sopping wet jacket as he headed towards his room,
"Murphy? My name's not Murphy, you fruit. We've been partners for two years and you've forgotten my name? This day is just getting worse."
Maka picked up the jacket Soul had thrown to the ground, not bothering to chastise him, "It's a joke, Soul. Like Murphy's Law?"
Soul simply grunted, not in the mood to listen to her nerdy ramblings.
Two weeks later he was playing basketball with Black*Star when disaster struck again. As he was reaching to steal the ball and missed when Black*Star faked left, he tumbled forward and scraped his face onto the pavement.
He groaned in pain as he stood up, holding onto his bleeding chin. Black*Star was cackling with mirth, and Maka was hiding her face behind her book, choking on her words as she asked if he was okay. He stomped off the court and sat down in the grass, pointedly ignoring the both of them.
When two minutes later he shot up from the ground, hurriedly wiping the ants off his backside, Maka nearly fell off the bench she was sitting on.
"Murphy strikes again!"
Soul slit his eyes and growled at her, "What the fuck does that even mean?!"
Maka chided him for the language before rolling her eyes, "I told you, it's like Murphy's Law. 'Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.' That's kind of your life."
Black*Star slapped Soul on the back, still laughing, "Murphy's Law! I like it! You are here by dubbed Murphy for the rest of your life."
From then on, every time Soul would find himself having an awful day, Maka would pat him on the head and coo at him in that agonizing baby voice, "Aww, poor Murphy. Don't worry, the Universe will come around some day and repay you for all this horrible stuff."
It didn't take long after meeting Liz and Patty for them to start using his nickname. Thankfully Kid thought it was silly, ranting about the balance of the Universe whenever it was brought up.
"I don't understand that name. There is no possible way for one person to continuously live by Murphy's Law. All of the things that could go wrong can't always be happening to you."
Liz would chuckle and stick her finger in Soul's face.
"Apparently not when you're this guy!"
There was nothing Soul hated more than being called Murphy. It wasn't like he was clumsy or anything. He had been trained in hand to hand combat for years, and he was perfectly capable of getting top scores on the agility tests when he put his mind to it.
He just got caught up in his mind sometimes. He never lost focus during a battle, and he sure as hell never had a "Murphy moment", as Maka so lovingly called them, when it really mattered.
Waking up in a hospital bed after the fight with Crona and seeing Maka clutching his hand like her life depended on it really put things in perspective for him.
He had smiled, running a hand tentatively through Maka's hair and murmured that everything was going to be okay. Maka grabbed him around the neck and sobbed into his shoulder, babbling about how happy she was that he was okay. He grunted from the pain in his chest, but he held her back, grinning happily.
He guessed Maka was right. Karma was finally repaying him for all the times a stray red sock had made it into his laundry and all the holes in his pants. He nuzzled his face into Maka's neck.
Maybe it was okay being a Murphy if he got to be alive.
Things were so crazy after that, he had barely any time to ponder upon his mortality. When it came to fighting madness and defeating the worst enemy the Academy had ever seen, a few exploded soda cans and lost DVD's just slipped his mind.
Years passed before anyone called him Murphy again. He had laughed, actually entertained by the memories from the past. It meant that things were finally peaceful enough for his mind to wander.
The first time he held his daughter, he had tears in his eyes when he turned to Maka,
"You were right, you know?"
Maka smiled contentedly, brushing a hand over her newborns fingers, "Right about what exactly?"
Soul grinned, kissing Maka's forehead, "About the whole Murphy's Law thing. I had to endure being accident prone for years to be able to have a life as amazing as this."
Maka chuckled, holding onto her husbands hand, "Was it worth it?"
Soul smirked as he sat down on the side of the bed, cradling his daughters head as he leaned back, "It will always be worth it to be with you two."
