The sun was almost completely set when Rin awoke where her master had left her, in his warm bed. She felt as if she could stay in that one spot for hours, until she realized her hunger. No lights were on and no sound could be heard from and of the abundant halls, so the neko knew she was alone in the house. She slipped out of bed groggily and crawled to the kitchen, taking a fresh, plump orange from the fruit bowl that was kept at a level where she could reach. After peeling it easily, she slowly enjoyed the juicy fruit, gazing out the little square window as she did. Suddenly, she had the urge to go outside.
A few minutes later, the kitten had made her way out the back of her house to her lush garden. She'd show more restraint now rather than attacking one of the birds, most of which were already asleep up in the tall, leafy trees. Her master knew how to make her remember her mistakes, as well as remember to repay him for taking care of her by behaving herself like a good pet.
The weather was nice out, a soft breeze tousling the thin branches of the trees around and the soft blond locks of her hair. Her fragile ears, however, remained undisturbed under the fabric of a light hat, only thick enough to keep out the wind, her sense of hearing still keen. And that's why she heard the loud conversation of a passerby on their cell phone, and slowly walked closer to the high fence line to lean against the wooden boards.
"You are coming to the company party, right?" The voice sounds calm and professional, though echoing in the mid- April night air. "Oh, yes, of course, of course… I'll wear that black dress, with the slit in the skirt… oh I know purple-hair will keep his hands to himself after what happened last time."
After struggling for a few moments, Rin was finally able to climb and peek over the top of the fence, watching the girl say a fond goodbye before ending the phone call. The woman's eyes scanned across the dark environment and her gaze met Rin's. Seeming intrigued, the girl absently slipped her phone in her pocket and approached her.
"Um, I… this might sound bizarre, but you look inticingly familiar," The woman noted, pausing once she was directly in front of the fence. By her proper articulation, she must have been a well educated woman, and her posture was held deliberately though not in a fashion which was superior. Anyone who might have passed by, however, would have noted how classy the women appeared in comparison to the blonde, who had herself essentially draped herself over the fence.
"Are you a real girl...?" Rin questioned curiously, with no intention to respond to the formerly made statement. Her head tilted to the side, and her eyes sparkled in the dim remainder of sunlight with all the innocence of a young child. The woman couldn't have known she was speaking to a creature only half human, despite the small lumps showing from under her hat, resulting from her folded ears.
It was as if for a few moments, the woman wasn't sure whether to offer a slight, awkward laugh or to seek the meaning of this childish girl's words. Taken aback, the woman didn't answer at all, and instead tucked a few strands of the cascading pink locks behind her ear.
"Master says I could have been a real girl. But he wanted me to be special. Do you know Master?" The pet carries on conversationally with these statements, as if she'd planned for years to speak them when the time came that she found herself face to face with someone who had a life fully their own.
"Well... no, I don't believe I do. What's his name, sweetie?" Her tone changes to that which she'd used with a child, as she wasn't sure who she was dealing with now.
"Master Len! Do you know him? He's nice and... strong and he takes care of me," She told her, with strong admiration apparent in her tone of voice.
"No, I… Len? Kagamine Len, you mean?" She asked, her sapphire orbs widening in slight surprise with recognition at the name.
Rin nodded in response, showing her the back of the tag on her collar, where his name was engraved, resulting in the woman's startled glances back and forth between the collar and the girl's face.
"You," She began, taking a soft breath that sounded as if it was infused with a weak chuckle, and shaking her head. "You resemble him completely. Like a mirror."
"Yeah, I think I was meant to," Rin addresses the woman's shock nonchalantly, them bites her lip as a soft smile appears. "You're really pretty, real girl. What's your name?"
"Oh, thank you… I'm Luka. And you're Rin, correct?" Luka asks as she nods towards the girl's tags.
"Yeah! And sometimes Master calls me 'Kitten' or 'Princess'. I like it when he calls me 'Princess.' You don't have a Master, do you?" She already supposes the answer, as this woman appeared grown-up and authoritative.
"Well, no, I don't. Sweetie… are you alright here, I'm not sure that…" Luka trails off, realization hitting her as she thinks back on the girl's words. "Kitten?"
Rin nods and innocently swishes her tail up, the skirt of her dress riding up a little as she did. Luka now was met with confirmation of her curiosity of exactly what this girl was, and she found it fascinating. While biology was not the woman's main field of study, she had dabbled in it for a short amount of time while she'd been in college, before she'd secured her now successful career as a nuclear physicist. She had no idea that such a specimen could be created with healthy results, as the only notions of this she'd come across had been hypothetical proposals in medical journals. As much as it was now tempting to stay and talk longer, she worried her presence wouldn't be welcome examining what was probably confidential property at the time.
"Rin… I think I should be going. Is your Master always away from home at this time?" She questions, her eyes shifting around the evening's scenery nervously before returning her urgent gaze to the creature.
"Yeah, every day. Him and uncle have to work at the labs," She informed, then suddenly appeared concerned. "Oh, no… will Master be angry I talked to a real person? Will I get in trouble again?"
"It should be okay. We can be… well, secret friends, so to speak. How about that?" Luka offered with a small smile. Perhaps she could continue her studies with this intriguing girl, gain some knew knowledge.
"Yay! We're friends, Luka!" Her pitch raised in a sing-song manner as Rin said the girl's name, and it drew a chuckle from the woman. Barely sparing a thought to the matter, Rin leaned a slight bit more over the fence and brushed her delicate lips against the woman's.
Luka blushed deeply at the sudden action. "R-rin…!"
"What? I… I did something wrong? Human girls don't kiss? Master and I kiss." She noted, trying to understand why Luka looked so surprised.
"Ah, well… no, you're fine. It's alright. Nice meeting you, Rin. And remember, we're secret friends," The woman straitened back up, regaining her professionalism, before turning to continue her brisk walk home in the newborn evening.
