Chapter 6
"Alright, ladies. Lunch break is over. You can return to your quarters now."
The head nurse of the hospice instructed the girls to clear out the tables and turn towards their quarters in the east wing. All girls were dressed in their uniforms and were exhausted after the laborious day. Sleep sounded like a luxury these days. Since the war started, more soldiers with deadly wounds came scurrying here. The hospice was running short on supplies. But the devotion of the workers was what kept semblance here.
As the girls were moving towards the east wing in their smocks, the head nurse's voice rang out, "Miss Manson!"
Said girl turned towards her with an impassive expression. Masking the hurt and guilt inside. Trying not to let the tenor of her voice waver, she spoke, "Yes, ma'am?"
"I'd like to have a word with you."
Danielle walked towards the head nurse and stopped a few feet away from her. The head nurse was a very strict woman. The tightness of her bun and her thunderous expression intimidated almost everyone. Her booming voice just added to her already horrendous nature.
She cleared her throat and asked what the matter was at which the head nurse gave her a sharp look.
"I've been hearing complains from your dorm mates that you use the typewriter at night. It is disturbing their sleep and you will put stop to this immediately. I do not want my nurses inattentive during the day because they couldn't catch enough hours of sleep."
Danielle kept her eyes cast low. She was told that her deep azure gaze that matched so much like her sister had the tendency to deliver a cutting look when she was angry. Her sister. Oh how she missed her. She had written letters to her, all of them were left unanswered.
It had been four years since the night she had convicted Danny Fenton. Four years since she saw her sister who had soon left after the incident. Even when she had stayed in the house, she would give all of her family hostile glances. Four years since she had seen Danny. She wanted to see them both and apologize for what she had done, but it was not something that could be forgiven so easily.
Her usual plans for attending Cambridge were cancelled and she had started her training as a nurse.
Now a young of woman of 18, she was out of her parents house and living the life of a trained nurse in a hospice.
During the day she would devote herself to her daily chores and at night she would pull out her typewriter and work on her new novel. Writing gave her a peace of mind and she couldn't imagine giving that up.
Many a times she would write with her typewriter but sometimes she would lay in bed when the tears would start staining her pillow. She would cry for her innocence. She would cry in utter despair. She would wish to go back all those years and take back the lie that ruined the life of the two people she loved the most. She would wish back to the time when she let herself think that she understood the circumstances and take it all back. She would wish to see her sister and Danny again and apologize for her naivety and she would wish that they forgave her and all was forgotten. When she would wear out from her sobs she would wish herself a dreamless sleep.
But nothing was ever that simple.
"I apologize, ma'am," another lie. But she couldn't give up her writing. Where would she find her peace. Where would she find her semblance. She couldn't and she wouldn't.
The head nurse gave her a strict nod and went her way.
Danielle stood there for a moment, contemplating where she would take her typewriter and write in peace.
She went to the storage area to collect her thoughts when her only friend, Valerie, came towards her. She was a young woman of one and twenty. A little curvy and dark in complexion. Her brown mousey hair pulled at the top of her in a knot. A dreamy smile on her lips and a letter in hand.
Danielle gave her a smile when she finally pulled up in front of her.
She asked her, "Who has you sighing like giddy school girl?"
Val blushed and gave her a playful shove, "My fiancé, he wrote that he's with a few of his companions in northern France. Their making their way towards Dunkirk."
Dani cocked her head to the side, "This information has you blushing like a fool?"
"Oh heavens no, he wrote that he's asking to be deported back to London for our wedding," she squealed.
Danielle's face showed a genuine smile at the good news.
"Well, I'm happy for you," she said as she came forward and embraced her friend.
When Dani turned to lean against the wall opposite to the stalls of band aids and peroxides, Val followed suit.
Both girls let out a sigh in unison and stood there in companionable silence. Finally Val asked, "Have you ever been in love, Dani?"
Danielle sucked in a breath as she was pulled back into a memory.
It was a hot summer day in 1934. A year before the lies that pulled away her innocence.
Danielle was sitting on the rock that lined the lake's shore and was already getting cold feet, literally, about jumping in the lake for a swim. It had been three months since the last time she swam here, but that was also the time she had nearly drowned and was now feeling a little queasy about coming down here.
The feeling of water muffling her screams and taking her down to the bottom of the dark pit was terrifying.
But she had come with the sole reason to put behind the whole incident, and to prove a point to her as well. If only...
"Are you going to jump or not?" a voice called from behind her. And on time as well.
She turned to face her companion and said, "Well Danny, I think I should just forget about the whole ordeal and go read that book I as telling you about," she replied with a shudder running through her as she watched the water below her.
Danny cocked his head to the side, silently berating her that those tricks weren't working on him.
She huffed and turned her back to him. After a few moments she spoke again, her voice losing its high octaves and making her sound scared beyond belief, "If I were to drown, would you save me?"
Danny raised an eyebrow at her and started picking up the fire wood he had gathered for the evening, "What kind of question is that? Of course I would save you."
He gave her a small timid smile and turned his back to her and started making his way towards his cottage. He had taken a few steps further when he heard a splash behind him, immediately followed by sputtering.
He turned back and saw that Danielle had fallen in the lake and was trying to come to shore but was failing miserably.
Danny let go of the firewood and ran towards her and dived in the lake.
Not long after that he pulled Danielle up with him who was coughing the water from her lungs. Both were soaking wet. Danny pulled her in his arms and made his towards shore. Feeling short of breath he faced Danielle with an angry scowl, "What in bloody hell was that!"
Danielle tried to compose her face but a grin still broke out on her features, "I was testing if you would save me, and you did. Oh Danny, I am so happy!"
Danny let out a feral growl and let go of Danielle who fell on her bottom on the grass, still grinning.
"There is nothing to be happy about! You could have drowned!" he gave her a dark glare.
"But I didn't, because you saved me."
"But you could have! I would have come to save you anyway, why did you have to pull up such a stunt!"
"Isn't it obvious, I am in with love you," Danielle declared.
Danny stared at her for a minute and then a chuckle came out of his mouth, albeit the situation.
"You are just a child. What do you know about love?"
"More than you I presume. Did you have to laugh, my love for you shouldn't be that amusing!" Danielle huffed indignantly.
Danny tried to hide his smile but failed and held out his hand for her to take, which she did with enthusiasm.
"C'mon, let's get you home. We wouldn't want you to catch a fever."
She followed him, knowing full well that her declaration of love was an humorous situation for him. But she knew they were real. It felt like they were bursting inside of her. Surely feelings this intense feeling could be reciprocated. And she would try to make him believe her...
But instead of proving her feelings for him, she had destroyed his life.
Valerie nudged her shoulder with hers. Danielle realised that she hadn't replied yet.
"Well, have you?" Valerie asked again.
Danielle stayed silent for a moment, looked down at her scuffed shoes and bit her lips before replying, "No, I guess I don't know much about love."
WooHoo! I uploaded! I'm am so proud of myself. In fact I deserve a pat on the back for writing this chapter. (*Pats herself on the back*) I would have uploaded sooner but you people never review! I thought people get more reviews after being on haitus for a long time. But obviously that won't happen to me.
Okay people, tell me which story to update next and I'll try with all my might. Oh and I might just start writing a DP fanfic based on Snow White and the Huntsman (Yes, Sonic the lightening hedgehog, I will start a new story before updating the others) So be prepared.
NEWS!; So if you read this story from the beginning you will see that I have done some changes in the writing, because I was just reading the chapters for proofread sake and I realized, 'Wow, this really sucks'. And I also added a little more lime in the sex scene, so check it out and let me know.
For the love of all things Chocolatey! Review!
