Tony grumbled. There was nothing to eat in any of the cabinets unless Gerber carrots or unopened Lima beans were your thing.
"Why do we even have Lima beans?" Tony asked out loud before a thought hit him, "speaking of...where is we?" He made a full 360 hoping to catch a noise or sight of his better half.
"Steve?" Tony wondered wondered through the house poking in and out of the various rooms. Grabbing an apple he whistled while he worked (they had just watched Snow White the night before) to find his husband. "Steve!?" He was just about to give up when he crossed through the sun room. This was Tony's favorite room in the house (even before the master bedroom). The entire back wall was of glass and looked over the beautifully manicured back lawn. Complete with a cliche and tacky swing set the yard was a perfect example of an all-American family's back yard. As much as Tony would love to wallow in the view as a whole it was the site off to the right that had caught his attention. Opening the the door on the far right, Tony made his way across the porch and through the garden towards the hammock. The site before him was the most amazing thing he had ever seen. Peter laid sleeping in the crook of his Papa's arm with his little hand resting on top of the copy of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel that laid on top of Steve's chest. Tony tip toed as close as he dared. He marveled at how peaceful and domestic they looked. For a brief moment Tony forgot that their life was the most unpredictable mess of super villains and spandex. He forgot that for aunts and uncles his son had assassins and snipers and for godparents he had CEOs and green monsters. For a moment Tony forgot all about his past. The horror of disappointed fathers and an often crippling genius. Tony leaned against a tree and just watched as Steve shifted slightly before tightening his arm around Peter. Tony watched for a few minutes more before taking out his cell phone and clicking a picture.
A few weeks later, Steve was making his way towards the living room to catch up on the news. Luckily he had gotten out of work early and had beat Tony home. Since they had already discussed Tony grabbing Peter from preschool on his way home, Steve didn't see a need to call or throw off their routine. Instead he came right home, threw a pot roast in the oven and grabbed a bowl if assorted fruits. He ran a hand through his hair as he yawned and threw another grape into his mouth. He was just walking past the fireplace when a picture above the mantle caught his attention. He stopped and took a few steps back so to get a better perspective. A smile crossed his face as he pulled out his phone.
"Hey Man-With-a-Plan! I was just about to call you and let you know I was on my way out..."
Steve interrupted Tony before he could get a full itinerary. "I love you."
" ah...I love you, too. What brought this on? New recruits driving you up a wall?"
"No. I'm home. In the living room."
"Oh. I meant to tell you about that. It just came in yesterday and I hung it up before heading in this morning. You and Peter were already off."
"I love you, Anthony. Thank you for giving our house a sense of normalcy."
"I love you, too Steven. Thank you for giving me a family."
