"Anna," she spun so quickly, one of her twin braids slapped her face and she flinched a little bit. She was looking at me with such wide eyes; she was relieved to see me. Oh no, I thought, swallowing, this was going to be so much worse than I thought.

"Elsa!" she exclaimed, "You're okay!" she started to run up the steps and met me in the doorway, "This place is amazing," she rasped, "Did you make this?" I gaped at her, why was she acting like this was normal?

I was so happy to see her, and I was about to throw my arms around her- but I caught myself in time. Don't you remember what happens when you can't control your magic? You hurt people- you hurt Anna! My face became still and stiff. I felt my shoulders tense, and I regarded her coldly, "Why are you here, Anna? You have to go home." I hoped that she would think my harshness was sincere. If I hurt her enough, she wouldn't want me back; she would let me go. It was cruelly ironic, but the only way I could protect her, was if I hurt her. "Go home, Anna."

Her eyes widened, and her mouth opened and closed, and then her jaw set stubbornly and she narrowed her eyes, "Alright, I'll go home," she said, and I had to stop myself from breathing a sigh of relief, "But not without you." I wanted to groan; I had forgotten how stubborn she was. "You belong in Arendelle, Elsa. You are the Queen, for God's sake! We need you!" Her cheeks were red. She never was good with the cold. She always hated winter time; when white flurries fluttered down; when ice made the courtyard slippery; when Elsa felt most happy.

Elsa frowned, this isn't working. She wished Jack was there, he was very persuasive; he would be able to make Anna go home. "Anna, I'm okay here. I am finally happy. Can't you see that?" Elsa looked very sad, and Anna wanted to cry, "Please, let me be happy." Elsa was begging her sister, pleading silently. The two had always had a relationship that was less spoken, more interpreted.

"What about me?" Anna asked, her voice cool, "I need you, Elsa." She looked her sister directly in the eyes; she was pleading too. Elsa's nerves were short, and she felt a chilling coldness beginning to spread through her bones. This was bad; Elsa tried to stable her rapid heartbeat; she tried to breathe slowly, counting to ten. "Arendelle needs you too." Elsa stopped her breathing exercises and watched her sister. Anna was losing her fire and her argument. She was using her very last cards. "I won't marry Hans. I won't marry him, if you come home." Anna's eyes were glittering the way they did when she was about to cry, and Elsa braced herself.

"You can marry him, if you are sure." She whispered the last part, hating the words. Elsa didn't trust him; she couldn't say why, but she didn't trust him with her precious sister. But, at this point, he couldn't be any worse for Anna than Elsa was; no more dangerous. "I don't like him, and I don't want you to marry him, but if it will make you happy, I'll get over it." she hoped Anna understood where she was going with this, but it felt like a low shot; like she was using Anna's situation against her. "Because that's what matters to me, that you are happy." She frowned at Anna. Elsa wanted to take her sister's hand, but was frightened that she would hurt her. "That is what love is, Anna. Letting a person do something you don't want them to do, because you know it will make them happy."

Anna was looking at Elsa as if she were scared of what she was about to say; she knows, Elsa thought, she knows what I am going to say, and she knows she won't be able to argue against it. "I don't know what you are trying to say." She said, playing dumb. Her expression was a mix of alarm and fear.

"Yes," Elsa said, "You do." She sighed, her breath making a little puff of white before her eyes, "If you love me, Anna, you'll let me stay here, and you won't try to bring me home. If you love me, you will leave, and you won't ever come back." Elsa was begging with her eyes again, hoping that Anna would accept that, and agree to leave and never return.

"No." Anna said, her face becoming even more stubborn than before. "I won't leave you here. You are coming back to Arendelle, with me." She took a deep breath, "It isn't just me that you effected when you left, Elsa." She looked her sister straight in the eyes, and Elsa glimpsed a vision of her sister she hadn't seen before. She wasn't a child anymore, not really. She was a young woman, fierce and strong and defiant. Elsa wondered whether she had become this woman when they were both at home, in Arendelle, and Elsa was hiding away in her room, barely speaking to Anna; or was she forced to grow up when Elsa left, when she revealed her power and ran away, and Anna had to impart on a journey with new companions. Did I make her grow up prematurely? Elsa thought.

"Anna, leave. Go home. Just- Let me be happy." Elsa frowned. She isn't leaving. She isn't going. Jack had been wrong; it wasn't as simple as he made out it would be. It was comforting to know that once Anna was gone, Jack would be there to help. He always found it so easy to cheer her up, and boy, did she need cheering up now.

Anna moved very quickly; she grabbed Elsa's wrist and started to pull her down the ice staircase. Shocked, Elsa let her, but as soon as they had reached the thick snow ground, Elsa dug her heels into the snow and pulled her arm free. "Anna, no." she said firmly. Anna made another grab for her arm, but Elsa pushed her back. "No!"

Anna wasn't giving up. "Elsa, please, come home- we can talk about this at home."

"Anna, this is my home now." she stepped backwards, her hand finding the ice banister and gripping it hard. "I won't go back, you can't force me."

Anna laughed, "Yes." She argued, smiling cynically, "I can and I will." she stepped forward, "You can't leave me alone, Elsa. I can't be alone." She grabbed Elsa's wrist, and for a moment, Elsa let her.

She leaned close to her sister, "You can be alone, Anna." Elsa whispered, "You've been alone all these years, and look at you." She smiled bitterly at her sister, "Mum and Dad would be so proud of you, if they could see you." Elsa sighed. "But this is where I belong now." she pulled her hand free; it was easy, because Anna's grip had been weak. "I'm sorry."

"Elsa-" Anna cried out, tears spilling from her eyes.

"No!" Elsa cried out, she had swung around and ran up the staircase, away from Anna.

"Elsa! Don't do this! Come home!"

"Stop talking!" Elsa screamed. She spun round from where she stood at the top of the stairs, and swung her hand out, pointing at Anna, "I'm through with you, and with Arendelle! This is my home; this is me." Coldness ran through her, and before she could stop herself, a shock of ice ran though her hand, and it was directed straight at Anna.

Elsa didn't notice though; she had already turned and ran back inside when Anna gasped, collapsing to her knees as her entire body suddenly felt cold and exhausted. She cried out her sister's name, but her voice was too quiet, too weak. Elsa didn't hear.

Inside, Jack had been waiting just inside, and he smiled at her when she turned to face him, having slammed the doors hard. She screamed out loud, and her hands cast massive barricades against the doors, making it impossible for anyone to get in, and- Jack grimaced at the next thought- for anyone to get out.

She looked at him, "I'm guessing it didn't go well…" he said, frowning.

That was all it took for her resolve to crumble, and she sank to the ground, feeling emotionally and physically drained. She was crying, and confused, and she felt a pair of arms wrap around her. Jack was sitting behind her, one leg either side of her. he pulled her back, hugging her tightly, and she let him.

It could have been moments or hours, but for that time, they sat in their own, little confined universe; a universe where all that really mattered was the constant heartbeat of the other; the security of being wrapped in an embrace; the happiness of finally having someone to console, to support.

No amount of time in their own private universe ever could have been enough.
