BRAVE NEW WORLD
"Katherine looked just like you, it was weird." Leya began as she sorted through various sizes of stuffed animals.
Normally the only time Leya would be handling a stuffed animal was when she was with Teddy but today was an exception, it was the annual carnival at Mystic Falls High School. Leya was sure that it was to raise money for a charity as every other big event in Mystic Falls did but she wasn't sure what charity this particular event was for. And with Caroline out of commission because of the car crash she was in, Elena had decided to pick up where Caroline had left off which Leya thought was a big mistake especially since she was making her help.
"She is my ancestor." Elena admitted reluctantly changing subjects as fast as she could. "Hey, I moved the student booth into the cafeteria."
"She's your vampire ancestor and she didn't just resemble you like a family member would. She was you." Leya persisted trying to gauge Elena's reaction. After she had left the memorial for Mayor Lockwood, Katherine had decided to stay and cause more chaos revolving around the Elena, Stefan and Damon trifecta. Leya suspected it would only get even messier with time.
"I – I don't know. I can't explain it, okay? " Elena stuttered. "It's creepy, that's all I got."
"Well how do you know she's not out there pretending to be you?"
"I don't but I could sit here and be tortured by the not-knowing or I could get these prizes to the ring toss." Elena said with conviction as she turned her back on Leya to sort out the other stuffed prizes.
"Well have you talked to Damon since he killed Jeremy?" Leya asked her eyebrows furrowing as she recalled Stefan telling her what happened. "Or tried to kill Jeremy?"
"No, Leya, I haven't. I won't and I don't want to talk about Damon or anything else that's vampire-related, ok?" Elena replied stressed shoving a plastic bag of stuffed animals into Leya's arms.
"OK, ok." Leya said calmly flashing a small smile.
"I'm human. And I have to do human stuff, otherwise I'm gonna go crazy."
"Ok, I'll focus. I promise." Leya said seeing how frustrated and anxious Elena was with all the question she was throwing her way. "And anyway we have to make Caroline proud or she will kill us. I don't know how she does this all the time."
"Well because she's not human, obviously." Elena said a smile finally lighting her face.
"Obviously." Leya laughed in agreement. She was sure with the amount of work they had done (although they weren't even half way through) that anyone who did this all the time couldn't possibly be human.
The repetitiveness of placing the stuffed prizes on the shelves was starting finally get to Leya. She was on the verge of wanting to blast of the animals until they were nothing but fluff, but somehow she held herself back.
"Hey." A nervous voice greeted behind her. Leya turned around to face Bonnie standing behind her a shy hesitant smile on her face and a plastic bag of stuffed animals in her arms.
"She roped you in too." Leya deduced as she turned around to finish the job.
"Yeah. I think she put me here hoping we would make up." Bonnie said walking closer and dumping the bag beside Leya as she started to help. "That's Elena, always trying to make things better."
Leya said nothing and for the next few minutes they worked together it was filled with a tense silence. Until Leya couldn't take it anymore. "Look, Bonnie. I – I'm over it."
"Over what?" Bonnie asked nervously.
"My aunt is dead, gone." Leya cleared her throat. "I've accepted that there's absolutely nothing I can do to bring her back. I've lost a countless number of people in my life. People who I care about and people who have fought for me even if I didn't' know them."
Both girls paused in their work. Leya started at her hands and Bonnie stared at her.
"I am not unfamiliar with Death." Leya said looking into Bonnie's eyes.
"What happened?" Bonnie asked her voice coming out in only a whisper. She could tell Leya's been through a lot, the look in her eyes was frightening almost. If what she's been through was hard for her she didn't even want to know what Leya's been through.
"That's a story for another time." Leya breathed in deeply. "I can't blame you for my aunts death. You were just trying to save a lot of people and Daisy could've easily left the basement but she didn't. It was her choice and although I don't agree with it, it's too late to change it."
Leya placed the last animal on the shelf. "I just – I just wanted to say that I don't blame you."
"Does that mean we're still friends?" Bonnie asked hopefully.
Leya laughed a little but there was still an underlying sadness to it. "Yeah, we're still friends."
The carnival turned out to be a success. Tons of people went and as Leya weaved through the crowd she managed to catch sight of Jeremy, the only familiar face she's seen so far.
"Jeremy!" She called out to him as she walked his way.
"Hey, Leya. How're you doing?" He asked heading straight to the popcorn stand.
"I've been better, but then again I've been worse too." Leya replied not really giving a straight answer. "But I should really be asking you how you're feeling since… you know… being brought back to life by a magic ring."
Jeremy laughed not amusedly but a little hysterically like he couldn't really believe it himself. "I don't know. I feel fine I guess, a little strange but alive."
"Jeremy, so good to see you alive." Damon's annoyingly familiar voice interrupted.
"Aren't you a little too old to be at a school carnival?" Jeremy asked his attitude turning sour at the sight of the vampire who killed him the other night.
"About 150 years too old." Damon wittily replied without hesitation as he grabbed some popcorn from Jeremy.
"You're pretty funny cracking jokes when I could I don't know, blow the whole lid off this thing by telling someone what you really are." Jeremy said angrily his death still fresh in his mind, the feeling of everything going blank as Damon rushed to him snapping his neck.
"Jeremy." Leya hissed worriedly.
Damon as of right now was unstable. With Katherine coming back just to say that she loves Stefan and not him, even though he dedicated over a hundred years to getting her out of a tomb which she was never in in the first place was crushing. The wrong thing said such as a threat about his vampirism might just set him off just like the other night when he killed Jeremy.
There was nothing Leya could do about it too. They were in an open space and the thought of doing magic in front of all the muggles wasn't even an option. Especially with Katherine back it was too much of a risk.
Damon instantly hooked his arm around Jeremy's shoulders and dragged him away from the crowd of people. "So please tell me that that wasn't a threat."
"Maybe it is." Jeremy croaked as the arm around his neck got tighter. Jeremy held up his hand the Gilbert ring wasn't hard to miss. Actually a ring that size would never be hard to miss.
"This is what we're not gonna do: we're not gonna walked around like we are invincible when it's this easy for me to end you." Damon said through clenched jaw squeezing Jeremy's neck tighter.
"Damon, stop it." Leya said angrily as she stood near them her hands clenched into fists by her side as she tried her hardest to not reach for her wand. "Don't make me force you to stop."
Damon threw her an annoyed look but complied all the same not taking her threat to heart. He released Jeremy ignoring his gasps for air and continued on. "If you want to tell people what I really am go ahead and try." Damon held up Jeremy's Gilbert ring and smirked proudly. "I will shove this ring so far up your ass; you'll really have something to choke on."
Damon threw the ring at Jeremy's chest and left without another word. Jeremy hastily bent down to get the ring from where it had bounced off his chest and put it back on with a sigh.
"Are you alright?" Leya asked worriedly placing a hand on Jeremy's shoulder.
"I'm fine. Look, Leya I appreciate the concern but I don't need you fighting my battles for me." Jeremy said facing her. "And anyway I don't think you could've done anything."
Leya sighed frustrated and clenched her fists once more watching Jeremy's back get lost in the crowd as he walked away. She shook her head and turned back around to look for Damon. Once she found him he was standing by the arm wrestle booth.
"What are you doing?"
"Watching the Lockwood's." Damon replied simply his eyes narrowing as Tyler beat the other guy.
"And why are we watching the Lockwood's exactly?" Leya questioned staring at Tyler.
"Because the Gilbert device affected them when it should only affect those who are supernatural. This leads me to think that the Lockwood's aren't exactly human."
"You're lurking." Stefan voiced appearing behind Leya and Damon. Neither of them flinching at his sudden appearance. "And now you've dragged Leya into it."
"Firstly I didn't drag her she joined me, secondly I'm not lurking I'm observing." Damon said not moving his eyes away from Tyler.
"More like obsessing." Stefan muttered back joining the two in observing Tyler.
Tyler won again.
"He's got strength." Damon said nonchalantly but there was something else in his voice that suggested suspicion.
"He's a triple letter varsity athlete, of course he has strength. You're reaching."
"I bet I can take you." A guy said walking past Tyler to stand in front of him.
"Enter the uncle." Damon said to Stefan.
"That's Tyler's uncle?" Leya asked shocked. She had left the memorial for the Mayor so soon that she never got to see if any of Tyler's other relatives showed up.
"Yep." Damon replied popping the p.
"This is ridiculous." Stefan commented with an amused smile as uncle and nephew got into position.
It was a few seconds of struggle before Tyler's uncle had his hand pinned down. Leya watched as he laughed and Tyler admits defeat. "Alright, he's the camp! Who wants to go next?"
"Well I don't know about you two but I say we test out this supernatural theory." Leya said turning her head to look at the two Salvatore brothers before making her voice louder to draw attention. "Stefan wants a go."
"Thanks." Stefan muttered sarcastically under his breath. "Yeah, sure I'll, uh, give it a shot, you know."
"Get him, Stef." Damon called out in encouragement although they knew it was useless since he was a vampire.
Both Damon and Leya watched intently as Stefan and Tyler's uncle got into position. They struggled for a moment their fists jerking back and forth until Stefan's hand slammed against the table signifying his loss. Stefan walked over to where Damon and Leya where no emotion showing on his face.
"You didn't put in any effort at all." Damon stated a little upset. He wanted someone to bring that uncle down even if it was over a stupid game of arm wrestling.
"Yeah, actually I did." Stefan admitted a look flashing over his face.
Damon who understood immediately gestured with his head to go someplace with more privacy. Leya watched Tyler's uncle a second longer before following Stefan and Damon. Damon spoke first. "Is he-?"
"No." Stefan cut in. "It wasn't that kind of strength but it was more than human if that makes any sense."
"What is up with that family?" Damon questioned frustrated.
"If they're not vampires," Leya started asking the question that was going through all their heads. "Then what are they?"
"Ohh, uh, maybe they're ninja turtles?" Stefan said the look of astonishment lighting up his face.
Damon looked at him like he was crazy while Leya tried to stifle a laugh. "You're not funny."
"Or, no. Zombies. Werewolves." Stefan threw suggestions.
"No comedic timing at all." Damon disagreed.
Leya's laughter faded at the word werewolf. It wasn't impossible. Granted the only real werewolf she's known was Remus and now she guess that included Bill and Teddy. And she may have had a few run ins with Fenrir Greyback but she doubted the Lockwood family were actually werewolves. She's seen Tyler and Mayor Lockwood on the nights of a full moon and they weren't exactly sprouting fur and screaming in pain.
"What? What are you up to?" Stefan asked as Damon walked away.
"Since this is reality and there's no such thing as werewolves or combat turtles-"
"It's ninja turtles, actually." Stefan corrected even though Damon had already turned his back and walked over to one of the works who arrived with the carnival.
"Whoever said werewolves didn't exist?" Leya muttered under her breath as she followed both brothers.
Leya joined them just as Damon grabbed the worker by his shoulders and started to compel him. "I need you to pick a fight with someone. Kid named Tyler Lockwood."
"Damon don't do this." Stefan interrupted but Damon just waved him off.
"It's just an experiment. Get him mad. But don't back down no matter what he does, okay?" Damon compelled.
"I won't back down." The guy robotically repeated.
"I know you won't."
The worker walked off a blank look on his face. "You do realize somebody's going to get hurt." Stefan said turning to Damon.
"No, someone's going to get mad. As in rage." Damon countered smugly as he crossed his arms.
"Why?" Leya questioned. "What is that going to accomplish?"
"That Tyler kid is incapable of walking away from a fight. Let's see who intervenes." Damon replied with a shrug. "Maybe it's the ambiguously supernatural mystery uncle."
Stefan scoffed as Damon walked off without another word, he turned to Leya troubled. "I'm going to have to look after him won't I?"
"Yep."
Leya aimlessly wandered around the carnival with nowhere in mind. She was feeling a little lost at the moment. She's been feeling lost for a while now. With Daisy gone the house had begun to feel overwhelmingly lonely. She didn't want to stay there anymore, she didn't want to stay in Mystic Falls anymore but she had no choice.
The thought of Bellatrix out to get her was not very intimidating especially since she was up against Voldemort most of her life, but if protecting her loved ones meant leaving them then she would do it. Even if she suffered loneliness. And although it wasn't the first time she felt lonely that didn't mean it doesn't hurt any less.
Leya sighed looking around at all the people. She wanted to leave, she needed to leave she couldn't deal with people right now. Now Leya walked with determination. The thought of going home didn't sound very good but it was a lot better than wandering around a carnival while everyone had fun with their families.
She took the back way hoping no one would be there so she could Apparate without anyone seeing her. When she got to the right spot there was a couple already there. Leya was about to turn around and leave when she heard sobbing. She looked closer and the blonde hair of girl was so familiar she couldn't shake the feeling that she knew her. When the man started to raise his arm a wooden stake gripped firmly in his hand Leya unconsciously raised her wand. Just as the man was about to kill the girl Leya moved her wand silently casting a spell, the stake flew out of the man's grip.
Something rushed past her pulling the woman out of the man's arms. "Stefan!" The man, Leya now realized was Damon, yelled angrily.
Leya walked up to Elena as she held Caroline whose mouth was covered in blood. "Get away from me!" Caroline screamed hurt and confused as she pushed Elena back. "You killed me!"
"No, no, no that wasn't me. Caroline you know that it was Katherine." Elena defended trying to make her best friend realize that she didn't kill her.
"No!" Caroline shouted confused. "Then why does she look like you? And why? Why did she do this to me?"
Elena tried to answer but couldn't because to be honest she had no idea. "Stefan, we gotta get her inside."
"Caroline come with me." Stefan said as he walked backwards to her, his arm outstretched but his eyes were still on Damon.
"She will die." Damon announced convinced. "It's only a matter of time."
"Yeah, maybe so but it's not gonna be tonight." Stefan said as he grabbed Caroline's arm.
"Actually I think it will." Damon said quickly reaching down to grab the stake by his shoe.
Without hesitation Leya ran right in front of Caroline just as Stefan changed their position. So Leya ended up wedged between Stefan and Elena all to save Caroline.
"Damon, she's my friend." Elena pleaded watching the stake that was held directly above her heart.
After a moment of hesitation Damon sighed lowering the stake. "Whatever happens, it's on you."
Leya breathed a sigh of relief as they backed away from each other knowing Damon wouldn't try anything else tonight. "Get her clean up." Leya said to Stefan motioning to Caroline who stood still shocked and confused.
"Caroline?"
Everyone seemed to turn to the person who spoke. It was Bonnie standing shocked only looking at Caroline.
"No. You're not. You can't – you can't be a…" Bonnie denied shaking her head. Her eyes met Leya's only for a second and Bonnie knew that what she was seeing was no longer her best friend but a vampire. Still she had to test it because her best friend couldn't be a vampire. Not Caroline.
Bonnie walked to her determined, hoping that she wasn't a vampire. But as she grabbed hold of Caroline's arm and felt the chill rise up her arms and to the rest of her body she knew there was no denying her powers. Caroline was a vampire now.
"Bonnie." Caroline whispered frightened almost.
"Oh God!" Bonnie exclaimed as she saw the body of Carter the guy who was alive as she showed him the broken Karaoke speaker. She ignored Caroline as she walked to the body and stood next to it mourning for him.
"Bonnie." Caroline whispered again, this time desperate hoping her best friend saw beyond the dead body and fangs.
Stefan ushered Caroline away and the silence was filled with Bonnie's sobs. "I can't believe this is happening."
"Oh come on, don't pout about it. We gotta a body to bury." Damon said as he picked up a shovel that was conveniently placed in the truck beside Caroline's first kill.
"Thought you were calling the shots, no?" Damon provoked Elena mocking her for her earlier words before speaking to the corpse in front of him. "Sucks to be you buddy."
Leya looked at Damon as he started to scream in pain. Within seconds he was on the ground in a fetal position holding his head. "Bonnie, stop!" Leya yelled at her hoping she would but it proved futile as Damon continued to scream. Then a hose nearby came to life as water ran across the pavement heading straight for Damon.
Elena walked forward but before she could get any further Leya stopped her pulling her back. "Don't, you could get hurt."
"I told you what would happen if anyone else got hurt." Bonnie said to Damon hate coating her tone.
"I didn't do this." Damon grunted through the pain.
"Bonnie, stop." Leya said more forcefully this time. "He didn't do this, it wasn't his fault."
"Everything that happens is his fault, Leya."
"Bonnie what are you doing?" Elena asked from beside Leya as the water continued to head straight for Damon.
"Bonnie, stop!" Elena panicked as the water was lit on fire. "Bonnie stop, stop it."
"Bonnie if you don't stop now I'll make it stop." Leya yelled over Damon's screams as the fire reached his leg.
Leya held her wand watching if Bonnie would stop, she didn't. Which meant Leya didn't have a choice either. Leya waved her arm and an unnatural wind came through putting the fire out instantly and Leya walked to Bonnie grabbing she shoulder and shaking her.
"Why? Why did you do that?" Bonnie shouted enraged that Damon didn't get what he deserved.
"Because this isn't you." Leya said sternly. "This isn't you, Bonnie."
Bonnie started to cry because Leya was right, she wasn't like this she was never like this. Wanting to hurt people even if they were vampires. Elena rushed over and embraced her friend. After casting a look over her shoulder at Damon who was still on the ground she led Bonnie away leaving Leya and Damon behind.
Damon coughed behind her before chocking out a weak thank you.
"I wouldn't thank me just yet, Damon." Leya replied looking down at him. "Who knows what might happen next."
Leya smiled tiredly as she managed to Apparate right in front of the door to her house. Normally she would've Apparated inside the house but after the memorial for Mayor Lockwood Leya had spent the rest of her day putting up Anti-Apparation and Disapparation wards all around the inside of her house. Today was tiring and all she wanted to do right now was make a cup of hot chocolate and go to sleep. Unfortunately it seemed fate had other plans.
"I am astounded by the nerve you have to show up here." Leya said to nothing but the air in front of her before turning to see Katherine sitting on railing of her porch swinging her legs.
"What can I say I've always had thing for danger." Katherine replied a coy smile lighting her face. "Thanks for not letting the Witch Bitch kill Damon. I mean I don't love him or anything but I think things would be a lot duller without him."
"I didn't do it for you."
"Oh I know. But for whatever reason it was, thanks." Katherine hopped down walking to stand in front of Leya.
"What are you doing here?" Leya asked crossing her arms.
"I came to meet the infamous chosen one, of course." Katherine said a little bit of surprise in her voice as if that was the first thing Leya should've thought of. "I've heard a lot of stories about you. Even before you born can you imagine that?"
"That's impossible." Leya forced out trying to see if Katherine was lying.
"Nothing's impossible, love. You of all people should know that." Katherine mocked. "I must admit I am curious as to why everyone seems to think that you're not even that strong of a witch. The little Gilbert certainly thought you'd never be able to do anything."
"You've been watching us." Leya accused.
Katherine shrugged a little smile curling her lips. "Guilty. But I'm much more interested in you than I am Elena and her petty little dramas. Plus I also like to watch the destruction I create from afar. It gives me a new perspective on things."
"And what have you found out from your new perspectives?" Leya asked curious.
"A lot of things. I'm also surprised that you haven't told the Salvatore's what the Lockwood's are." Katherine said curiosity shining in her eyes. "I mean minus the slight difference in species one of your fathers best friends was a werewolf."
Katherine's smirk faded because before she knew it Leya's wand was digging into the side of her neck. "How do you about that?" Leya said menacing.
"I know a lot things you don't, Leya." Katherine replied just as intimidating. "I know a lot more about you than you know."
"Stop talking in riddles and tell me the truth." Leya said through a clenched jaw watching as Katherine hissed in pain as her neck was burnt by her wand.
"Sorry, but a magician never tells her secrets." Katherine said a grin stretching across her face before she rushed off into the night at vampire speed.
What a cliffhanger right? You guys cannot imagine how many times I've misspelled stake for steak, its lunch time and instead of eating I managed to produce this measly chapter all for you guys. So review because for a fanfic author that's basically our money. It'll help me get the next chapter written and up soon.
