Plan B
Leya was reading when a knock on her door interrupted her. She looked up putting the book down and took her feet off the table. When she stood she flicked her wand in a general direction and all the cleaning supplies that were magically cleaning her house stopped and flew back into the cupboards.
"Jenna." Leya greeted smiling when she opened the door.
"Hey, Leya." Jenna replied walking in when Leya opened the door wider. "Listen I was wondering if you could maybe do me favor?"
"Well that depends on what kind of favor you're asking." Leya said raising both her eyebrows.
"Carol Lockwood is throwing this masquerade party that they do every year and since her husband died I thought maybe I would help out with setting everything up so I'm kinda reeling a few people in."
"And you want me to help?" Leya asked pointing to herself.
"If it's not too much of a problem."
"Oh, no it's fine. I can help." Leya hastily said as Jenna's expression started to drop, but with her confirmation it lifted right back up into a perky smile.
"Thank you so much." Jenna gushed. "Carol would have my ass if I didn't show up with a fair amount of people. Anyway Carol will tell you what to do once we get there -"
"Wait we're leaving now?" Leya questioned as the older woman started to push her out the door.
"Yep." Jenna replied closing the door behind her and locking it with Leya's keys.
"How did you get my keys?" Leya asked confused as Jenna started to pull her to her car.
"That doesn't matter." Jenna replied waving the question off. "What does matter is that we're going to be late. Come on, hurry up."
A car ride worthy of a speeding ticket later and Leya stood in the entrance of the vast house that was the Lockwood's. Jenna stood beside her looking at everyone as they worked. Leya who was sure that the only reason Jenna had pushed her out the door that quickly was so that she wouldn't run away was looking around too. She was surprised at how many people actually needed to help set up the party. Then again it was Mystic Falls and as Leya has come to learn, Mystic Falls goes over the top with everything compared to Muggle standards.
"Jenna, thanks for helping wrangle the volunteers." Carol Lockwood greeted as she walked to them arms spread out wide in greeting and a large smile on her face. She had taken over her late husband's job as Mayor for the time being and she certainly looked the part.
"Of course, it's for a good cause. Plus, I have always been a sucker for the Masquerade Ball." Jenna replied a sheepish smile on her face.
"So was Richard. This was always his favorite party of the year." Carol said a fond but sad smile showing.
"Oh, have you met Leya?" Jenna said suddenly remembering the teenaged girl standing awkwardly beside them. "She moved next door to me a couple of months ago."
"Yes." Carol said turning to Leya with a blinding smile. "Tyler's told me about you."
"Has he?" Leya questioned surprised, especially since she hasn't really talked to Tyler at all. "All good things I hope."
Carol laughed. "Only the best."
"Wait, wait, wait, Tyler!" Matt's panicked voice came from behind them.
"Boys!" Carol said aghast when she saw them struggle with an ornate table. "Be careful with that! It's from the 1800s." Carol turned to Leya and Jenna distress pouring out of her. "Excuse me for a moment, Tyler!"
"I can't believe you're making me do this." Leya said turning to Jenna as they watched Carol walk away to pester Tyler and Matt about being careful.
"Why do you think I made you leave right away?" Jenna asked rhetorically wandering into another room with Leya following. "I knew you would try and runaway if you could."
Leya sighed nodding her head in agreement when they came across Stefan. "Stefan, Jenna got to you too." Leya said in faux disappointment shaking her head.
"Uh, not exactly." Stefan said chuckling when the older woman elbowed Leya in the side lightly at the comment.
"I'm cooking dinner tonight. Ric will be there as will Leya -"
"I will be?" Leya asked turning to Jenna but she continued on like Leya hadn't said anything.
"You should come." Jenna suggested to Stefan and shooting Leya a confirming nod that she was in fact joining dinner.
"You know, Elena and I, we're kind of taking a – a pause." Stefan replied awkwardly his forehead scrunching as his brooding look appeared tenfold.
"Really?" Jenna asked back curiously.
"Yeah." Stefan nodded his head not looking at Leya because he knew she was giving him a look of disbelief.
"Because that's not what it sounded like this morning." Jenna lips twisted into a knowing smile and Leya cleared her throat to cover her laughter. Stefan tried to muster a face of confused but he failed. "I'm a light sleeper. But you know what? I heard nothing."
Jenna grinned patting Leya on the back as she left. Leya let out a chuckle and bit her bottom lip as she turned to Stefan. "You're over a hundred years old and you suck at lying."
"In my defense she already knew." Stefan said his own grin appearing.
"Ugh I can't believe we have over twenty crates of wine glasses to empty." Leya complained as she and Stefan took out each glass one by one by the bar. "Who needs this many wine glasses anyway?"
"If you complain so much at these things why do you even bother helping?" Stefan asked back amusedly.
"I'm blending in, Stefan." Leya answered in a 'duh' tone. "You know being me I can't just show up to a town and not try to blend in. But I must admit this would already be done if I could use magic."
"Why are you blending in?" Stefan asked curiously. "I mean you're from England so that already puts you as the odd one out but, uh, it doesn't have anything to do with those scars does it?"
"Why are you asking?" Leya paused looking at Stefan suspiciously. When he didn't say anything she had her answer. "Damon talked to you."
"He's just curious." Stefan defended. "And to be honest so am I. I mean you're our friend, Leya, and we know you but at the same time you're holding so much back."
"My past is my past, Stefan." Leya struggled to say turning to him. "It's not a very pretty past and it's not something I like to remember. I would expect you of all people to understand."
"You're right I'm sorry." Stefan apologized as they went back to emptying the crates.
"Hey, Stefan, Leya." Mason greeted nervously as he walked up to them carrying a box of feathered masks.
"Hey, Mason." Stefan greeted back cheerfully the tension of the conversation he just had with Leya disappearing as they both knew Mason wasn't expecting to see Stefan.
"I, uh, I wasn't expecting to see you here." Mason said shocked. "Or anywhere."
"Yeah, I had this little accident. But I'm fine now."
Mason walked up to them nervous at the way Stefan seemed to wave off his near-death experience. "What did you do to Sherriff Forbes?"
"Oh, she's fine too, but from now on, you'll have to do your own dirty work." Stefan replied seriously, staring Mason down.
"Not a problem." Mason replied walking away without another word. But before he was out of sight he accidently bumped into Bonnie who was walking to talk to Leya.
"Hey, what's wrong? Are you ok?" Leya asked touching Bonnie on the arm lightly as she continued to stare after Mason with a strange look on her face.
"When I touched him, I saw something." Bonnie explained turning to Leya and Stefan.
"What do you mean? Like a vision?" Stefan asked immediately.
"I saw Elena." Bonnie said confused shaking her head as if it would help clear the image in her mind.
"You saw Elena?" Stefan asked worriedly wondering if Mason would do anything to Elena to get back at him and Damon.
"He was kissing her."
"No, Bonnie, Elena wouldn't kiss…" Stefan trailed off as he turned to both girls realization in his eyes. "You didn't see Elena, you saw Katherine."
"Why would he be kissing Katherine?" Bonnie asked confused a slight look of disgust appearing in her features before she changed her mind. "You know what I don't want to know. I'll see you guys later."
"Wait over there where the gazebo is I'll get Damon." Stefan said pointing to a private part of the garden where no one was decorating.
Leya nodded her head and started to walk there. She didn't have to wait long until she was joined by Damon and Stefan. The former bursting out at what Stefan had just told him.
"Katherine is with Mason Lockwood?!" Damon exclaimed in disbelief.
"Yeah, we would've never guessed it but he came into town right after she did. It makes perfect sense." Leya confirmed shrugging her shoulders.
"I know, but Mason Lockwood?" Damon asked rhetorically disgust lacing his voice. "Werewolf thing aside, the guy's a surfer. She's got to be using him. She has to be."
"Using him for what?" Stefan asked folding his arms.
"Mason Lockwood's looking for a moonstone that allegedly can break the full moon werewolf curse. Maybe Katherine wants it as well." Damon suggested as he paced.
"Why?" Stefan questioned just as quickly as Damon made the suggestion.
"Well… no idea. That's the beauty of Katherine; she's always up to something."
"How do you even know Mason wants the moonstone? And how are we going to find this moonstone?" Leya questioned watching as the two brothers passed each other in their pacing.
"I found it out from Jeremy who got it from Tyler." Damon replied easily. "Jeremy is also the one whose gonna get it from Tyler."
"Why would you involve Jeremy?" Stefan asked an overprotective tone in his voice at the thought of involving Elena's little brother. Stefan started to walk away slapping Damon on the arm as he passed.
"He's playing Indiana Jones. He involved himself." Damon yelled to Stefan's retreating back in his defense.
Soon enough Damon and Leya caught up to Stefan who stood on the upper levels of the Lockwood garden that overlooked the rest of the area. Leya stood in-between the boys as Jeremy approached Tyler. The best Leya could do was read their expressions and from Jeremy's expression it wasn't the news they were hoping for. Damon sighed angrily walking off while Stefan just shrugged both him and Leya following Damon.
"So Mason has the moonstone." Stefan said as they came to a stop. "What now?"
Damon turned to Leya. "Can you witchy juju the place where he hid it out of him?"
"He knows I'm a witch, Damon." Leya said seriously. "Katherine probably told him and prepped him or something. I might not be able to get anything out of his head. "
"You gotta be kidding me." Damon said in frustration running a hand through his hair.
"Look just relax Bonnie will help us. Mason doesn't know she's a witch so we have the upper hand with her." Leya suggested.
"Bonnie hates us." Stefan said but he was clearly directing his tone to Damon who Bonnie hated more than anyone. "She wouldn't help us."
"Maybe not but she'll help me." Leya said backing up a few steps. "Wait here, I'll be back soon."
It didn't take long to find Bonnie. She was helping Matt find an extension cord for the Chinese lamps that were to go under the tent. Leya greeted Matt with a happy smile when he said he hadn't seen her in a while before she dragged Bonnie a little ways away.
"What's up?" Bonnie asked curiously.
"I need your help." Leya said hoping she was convincing enough to get Bonnie to do this.
"What kind of help?" Bonnie asked but she already knew. "No, Leya, I can't. I won't."
"Bonnie, please. I would do it myself but there's a bit of a disadvantage."
Bonnie opened her mouth to deny her but the look Leya was giving her told her this was much bigger than she realized. But still she had to stand up for what she thought was right, right? On one hand she had suffered at the hands of Damon and Stefan, her Grams died, and on the other her best friends were so distant with her she felt more alone than she ever had before.
Bonnie sighed in defeat. "Fine."
"Excellent." Leya happily took hold of her arm and dragged a reluctant Bonnie over to where Stefan and Damon stood.
"Ok, ok, this is as far as I go." Bonnie protested already feeling much too far away from any witness that could see them. "What do you want?"
"A favor." Damon murmured leaning in knowing it unnerved Bonnie.
"Like that's gonna happen." Bonnie scoffed leaning away. She glared at Leya when she nudged her lightly in the ribs. Yes Bonnie said she would co-operate in a way but Damon just made her blood boil with hate she couldn't help herself.
"So predictable." Damon rolled his eyes then looked to Stefan. "That's why we have him here."
"I know how you feel about helping us out, but since you're the one that linked Mason with Katherine, we finally have an opportunity to get an upper hand on both of them so, just hear us out." Stefan rationalized pleading with Bonnie.
Bonnie took a deep breath and looked to Leya briefly. "I'm listening."
Stefan's phone rang before anyone could say anything. "I have to fill Elena in on what's going on." He explained looking down at the caller ID before switching his gaze to Damon. "Can you play nice, please? For at least a minuet."
"I guess if I have to." Damon smirked as Stefan walked away answering the phone to Elena's frantic questions.
"All you have to do is touch Mason Lockwood again to see if he gave Katherine the moonstone." Damon explained holding out his hands in a friendly manner.
"My visions don't work like that. I don't get to ask questions."
Damon sighed frustrated as he threw Leya a look. He just didn't understand why Leya herself couldn't do it when Bonnie clearly had limitations. "How inconvenient. Although, let's talk about that little witchy juju thing you do with me. You know, they fun one where my brain bursts into flames? What is that?"
Bonnie's sour mood turned 180 as she smiled slyly and explained. "That's me giving you an aneurysm. Your blood vessels go pop, but you heal quickly; so, I do it over and over again."
"Is it vampire specific?" Leya asked tilting her head to the side curiously.
"It'd work on anyone with a supernatural healing ability." Bonnie replied.
"Good." Damon said satisfied with that notion.
Bonnie's good mood dropped again. "Damon, I'm not gonna help you hurt him."
"Mason Lockwood's a werewolf, Katherine's evil. They're the bad buys. Really? You're gonna play morality police with me right now?" Damon burst angrily. "Let me put it to you another way: they're a threat to Elena. So you, witch, are gonna get over yourself and help us."
"He means that with a please on the end." Leya tagged on glaring at Damon for his harsh tone as Stefan rejoined them.
"Absolutely." Damon replied sarcastically smiling at Leya.
"Here he comes." Damon said lowly as he, Stefan and Leya hid out of sight nearby waiting for Mason to fall into their trap.
"Hey, can you move your van? I'm blocked in." Mason yelled to one of the hired workers. One of the workers nodded and started up his van. "Whoa, whoa, hey, how'd you get stuck doing this by yourself?" Mason asked rushing to Bonnie to help her out. Bonnie was struggling with one of the plastic tables for the party trying to take it out slowly.
"All the guys bailed. Something about draft picks. I don't know, I don't speak that language." Bonnie joked innocently as she glanced to where Leya, Stefan and Damon were hiding.
"Well thankfully I'm here to give you hand." Mason chuckled good heartedly as he helped bring the table down.
Bonnie breathed in before she stared to stare Mason down. She chanted the spell in her head and it took immediate effect. Mason grabbed onto his head as it felt like it burst into flames. He fell to his knees yelling in pain the entire time.
"I'm sorry." Bonnie whispered staring at him regretfully.
Damon walked past Bonnie and grabbed onto Masons head and kneed him in the face. Mason fell to the ground unconscious. Damon opened the passenger door of Mason's car and gestured for Bonnie to get in while Stefan threw him Masons keys.
"Bonnie, wait." Leya stopped her before she got in. "I know you can't ask questions when it comes to your visions but that doesn't mean you can't dig for answers."
"How do I do that?" Bonnie asked her eyebrows furrowing.
"Just concentrate." Leya advised, that was all she could say really since she doesn't know that much about Bonnie's kind of magic. But if there was one thing Leya learned while learning Legilimens, it was to concentrate. Bonnie nodded her head smiling lightly as she got into the car while Damon and Stefan put Mason in the trunk of his jeep. Damon got into the car and drove off with Bonnie in the passenger seat leaving Stefan and Leya behind.
Leya was sorting feathered masks while she waited for Bonnie to text her if there was any new information. She was next to Matt and across from Elena when Matt brought up the subject of his rocky relationship with Caroline.
"So, where's Caroline?" Matt tried to ask nonchalantly but it came off a little too forced. "This is like her thing. I can't believe she's not here."
Elena shrugged sharing a look with Leya. "She had something else to do."
Matt couldn't take not knowing anymore so burst out asking what he really wanted to ask while looking in-between the two girls who knew her best. "Is she seeing someone?"
"Of course not, Matt." Leya replied immediately soothing him even though they had broken up it didn't mean their feelings for each other were gone.
"Has anyone seen Mason?" Tyler asked walking in just when Stefan brought them another box of masks. Only the one he was holding was now sequenced.
"He, uh, he took off. He said he wasn't sure when he'd be back." Stefan answered vaguely.
"So weird." Tyler commented softly shaking his head before walking off.
Leya looked down to the table when it vibrated. Her phone lit up as it vibrated again and she picked it up and read the text Bonnie sent her. She glanced up to Stefan and walked off ignoring Elena and Matt's curious look. Stefan was right behind her after he had shaken his head to make sure Elena wouldn't follow.
"Where is it?" Stefan asked as soon as they entered the woods.
"Bonnie said to look in the well, next to the old Lockwood property." Leya replied as she hopped over a particularly high root.
"So you know where that is?" Stefan questioned as he continued to follow Leya.
"Not exactly." Leya shrugged her shoulder tucking her hair behind her ear. Stefan threw her an incredulous look. "The Lockwood property isn't that big I'm sure we'll come across it soon enough."
And just as she said that they saw the old well sitting decayed and falling apart in the woods. Leya shot Stefan and triumphant look which he ignored. They both walked over to it and looked down. It was as deep as any standard well was but it also had a rusting iron grate on top so no one fell in, or in their case so no one stole the moonstone.
"What is going on?" And out of breath Elena yelled jogging up to them lightly.
"You shouldn't be here." Stefan said looking around just in case anyone followed her.
"I know, but I am. What's going on?" Elena persisted looking between Stefan and Leya.
"Bonnie thinks the moonstone is down there." Leya supplied smiling apologetically at Stefan who sighed angrily. He didn't want to involve Elena in case she would get hurt.
They crowded around the well as Stefan pulled the lock off the iron grating. Then with both hands and a groan of protest from the grate he pulled it off completely. Stefan climbed up onto the well and looked down.
"Hey. Be careful." Elena gave him a concerned look as he smiled encouragingly.
"I'll only be down there for a minute."
Leya watched with bated breath as Stefan jumped, she didn't release it until she heard him splash safely at the bottom of them well. Both Elena and Leya peered over the edge of the well and into the darkness hoping to get at least a glimpse of Stefan. They couldn't see anything.
"Elena!" Stefan's pained yelled came from the well making both girls jump.
"Stefan?!" Elena yelled back panicked as Stefan continued to scream.
"Elena! Leya!" Stefan screamed in hope that someone would do something.
"Stefan, what's happening?" Elena yelled back at the same time as Leya.
"What's going on in there?"
"Vervain!" Stefan gasped back. "Oh, God! Help!"
"Oh my God." Elena whispered as she jumped off the well and tried to move the rusted heavy chains on the ground.
"That isn't going help." Leya said pulling out her wand.
"Well why don't you do something!" Elena snapped looking down the well.
"It's too dark, I can't see anything from up here but I have another idea." Leya said ignoring Elena's harsh tone and climbed up onto the well.
Leya breathed in a few sharp breaths as she looked down. Stefan had stopped screaming a few seconds ago. That was a really bad sign. She whispered quiet encouragements to herself while she took out her wand.
"Leya, do something!" Elena screamed in full blown panic.
And without waiting for another second Leya jumped. She was free falling as the murky air passed her and thankfully on the way down she had somehow remembered to move her muscles. "Arresto Momentum."
The short fall to the bottom of the well came to halt as she hovered above the water for a second before being released by the spell. She was submerged fully in the water before she came up shortly gasping for air. Leya struggled to make her way to Stefan through the vervain laced water but once she reached him he was lying face down in the water.
"Come on, Stefan." Leya muttered pushing him up into a standing position.
His skin was a burning bright red with irritation. On some parts of skin it was completely melted off leaving raw muscle underneath. With a swish and flick of her wand Leya silently casts the levitation charm. Stefan slowly starts to rise with her wand as she directs his body to the opening directly above them. His limbs are lifeless and if she didn't know that he could heal she would've thought he was already dead because on the awful lesions on his skin.
Leya's hand shook slightly as she concentrated on levitating Stefan out of the well. Her wand shook a little too much to the left and Stefan followed bumping into the stone wall slightly. Leya wince muttering a quiet apology as she saw Elena reach down as Stefan neared her and pulled him out and to the side.
Leya sighed and lit the tip of her wand as she started to search for the moonstone. She dug around every crevice in the walls but there was nothing there. Then she felt her hand catch onto something. Leya pulled her hand up and a transparent wire followed, she kept pulling the wire until it got harder and harder to pull. Finally attached to the end of the wire was a wooden box.
Leya yelped lightly as she felt something on her arm. A snake was winding itself up her arm. She shook it off but more snakes started to emerge. "Stop, stop." Leya yelled frustrated that they all seemed to surround her.
Leya raised her wand and shouted. "Ascendio."
With a burst of air Leya was shot up into the air. Within seconds she landed hard outside of the well near Elena where she was feeding Stefan blood from her hand. Stefan's eyes opened groggily as his skin started to slowly heal with Elena's blood.
"Leya got the stone, Stefan." Elena reassured smoothing his head back. "Stefan, it's gonna be okay, everything's gonna be okay."
Leya sat back resting her forearms on her knees. She was soaked to the bone and now she was worried about Stefan and the fact that he was drinking Elena's blood. Leya gazed up through her eyelashes as Caroline and Bonnie came running towards them.
"What the hell happened?"
"You sure you're ok?" Alaric asked again as he set the table with Leya.
Leya looked up from placing the placemat down and with a kind smile she replied. "For the hundredth time, yes, Ric, I'm fine."
"It's just you looked at little freaked." Alaric tilted his head to the side and squinted his eyes lightly like he was examining her.
"There were snakes at the bottom of the well." Leya allowed herself to say.
"Not a fan of snakes huh?" Alaric asked smiling lightly but the grimace on his face gave him away. He'd have hated to be in Leya's position earlier that day, vampires Ric can handle like a pro, hand him a couple of snakes and he'll turn into a frightened little girl.
"I don't have a problem with snakes." Leya shook her head arranging the forks and knives. "They've actually been quite frequent in my life. I just thought that since I moved here I would probably never see them again."
"What are you two talking about?" Jenna walked to them the plates in her hands.
Alaric and Leya turned to her simultaneously and replied. "Snakes."
Jenna's eyes widened and her mouth dropped a little. "You know what? I don't want to know."
Jenna walked off to answer the phone as Alaric and Leya laughed softly. Alaric mimicked Jenna's facial expression while Leya tried to smother her laughs for Jenna's sake.
"Where's Jeremy?" Elena asked as she walked in.
"Oh, he went straight up to his room. He said he wasn't hungry." Alaric's laughter died out as he answered Elena.
"Who is she talking to?" Elena gestured with her head to Jenna curiously.
"Uh, I don't know." Alaric glanced back at Jenna for a moment.
"Of course, I understand." Jenna said quietly into the phone as she walked back over to them. "Elena it's for you."
Jenna handed her the phone and she looked at it confused. "Who is it?"
Jenna just shrugged in response and walked back into the kitchen as Elena pressed the phone to her ear. Fear spreads across Elena's face and Leya shoots her a concerned look. Elena shook her head at both Leya and Alaric's questioning stares. She talks into the phone quietly while Leya and Alaric finish up setting the table. When she turns around there was raw terror on her face as she focused on Jenna in the kitchen.
"Jenna, no!" Elena yelled dropping the phone.
Alaric and Leya turned around in time to see Jenna stab herself in the stomach with a blank look on her face. All three rushed over.
"Jenna! Jenna!" Alaric yelled as he pulled her onto his lap.
"Jenna, come on! Please don't die."Elena said as tears streamed down her face.
"She stabbed herself deeply she's going to bleed out in minutes." Leya said as Elena started call out for Jeremy (who came down to see what the screaming was about) to call the ambulance. Leya looked at them, everyone shocked and panicking. If she didn't do anything now Jenna would die before the ambulance arrived. So she gripped onto the handle of the knife and pulled it out sharply making Jenna cry out in pain.
"What are you doing? She's only going to bleed out faster!" Alaric screamed at Leya as he tried to put pressure on the open wound.
Leya ignored them all and focused on the wound with her wand. She started to slowly move her wand over the wound muttering the incantation Vulnera Sanentur her voice coming out softly and song-like. It was the same spell Snape used on Malfoy so that he wouldn't bleed out in the lavatory after she shot him with the Sectumsempra spell. Slowly the blow flow started to lessen before stopping altogether and as she kept saying the spell the residue around the wound started to clear.
Slowly but surely the wound started to knit itself up starting from the inside. But before she could continue and heal Jenna fully she was pulled back breaking her concentration.
"No!" Leya protested as she struggled against Alaric. "I can help her more than the paramedics can."
"I know, I know." Alaric said as he pulled her back further from Jenna and the paramedics that surrounded her. "But it's too late now, Leya, they're already here. Just leave it to the humans now."
A/N: Thank you for all the reviews! I'm five away from 400, oh my gosh never thought this story would have that many reivews XD I might be taking a 2 week break just so I can catch up on my other stories but I'll give you answer for the burning question I keep getting:
So all of you keep asking when everyone's gonna find out about Leya's past and all I can say is that it'll be during season 3 and it'll be epic! I can't tell you anymore because it'll be a spoiler but I've planned the moment in head since before I started writing this story.
I'm also starting to seriously dig Daya (Damon/Leya thanks to Shannyrox101 for the ship name :D) but I do want to put her with an original, but I'm curious who do you guys want Leya with?
