Harley clopped over unsteadily on her skates to the side of the ice rink with her cup of peppermint tea in her hand towards her friends, Rhonda and Herman. She smiled at them before taking a seat, but they were too caught up with each other to really notice her return.
It was winter break now and the three friends decided to go ice skating near Herman's house, make that, the couple and friend. Herman and Rhonda had just started dating a few months before when Herman had finally gotten the courage to ask Rhonda out, causing the girl to squeal in delight before jumping on Herman. It had been awkward at the time to watch your two best friends sucking the life out of each other, but Harley lived through it.
Harley looked around at the other people on the ice, trying to ignore the giggling coming from her right as Herman whispered into Rhonda's ear. There were families and friends enjoying themselves, but she also saw a good number of couples holding hands as they glided across the rink. Harley looked at her friends once more, wanting to engage them in a conversation, maybe even ask if they could go out on the rink again, but then her words fell flat as they were now snogging. Why did she agree to go ice skating with them?
Harley glared down at her skates. It was't that she wanted to steal Herman from Rhonda, they were just friends and she was happy they got together, but they now had something she didn't have. She loved them but to pieces but she couldn't stand when they were so cute to each other while Harley was technically still single - 'technically' because she and Gene weren't officially dating.
They had never called their relationship anything and as far as Harley knew, Gene still considered her as 'just a friend'. Harley blushed into her mug as she thought of Gene. He had the cutest freckles, his hair just a little bit too long, his blue eyes that held her attention whenever they spoke and his body was toned from playing Quidditch for the last few years. But then she growled. Gene was supposed to be her 'date' to this ice skating outing and save her from the caught up couple, but had to cancel at the last minute for some Quidditch practice.
"Harley, Rhonda and I are going to get another mug of peppermint tea from the stand over there. You want something?" Herman offered. Harley shook her head and held up her own still-steaming cup, but she doubted the two saw with how fast Rhonda was pulling Herman away.
Harley watched them glide away across the ice and sighed. She shivered from the cold and pulled her scarf a bit tighter around her neck as she took a sip of her peppermint tea then held it up in a toast. Cheers to me and the other lonely hearts.
