"All aboard!"
Looking over the dock, the queen stood idly as she gazed over the open waters. The calm ripples of the waves gave a sense of peace that only nature could provide. In the distance was the castle that remained static and unwavering. Adjacent to the view of her castle was the Royal Ship of Arendelle that subtly followed the flow of the ever moving ocean.
Elsa took in one last deep breath before finally taking in the moment. This would be her first time she'd be leaving the lands that her family had ruled over for so many generations. This was also her first official departure from Arendelle to another kingdom. Putting aside her fears, she saw this moment as a point to finally move forward and overcome her thoughts of protection through isolation. She took her first step towards true freedom.
"Elsa! Elsa! Oh my God! Elsa! Look, look, look! It's a boat!" Anna yelled in the distance while rushing to her sister. Elsa turned around right at the moment her little sister had launched into her and locked arms. Her face was brimming with excitement at the thought of traveling somewhere new. Like a child, she simply couldn't contain herself as she continued to skip side by side with her older sister.
"Yes, Anna, I know. It's a boat."
"No, no, no, I don't think you get it. I mean, this is a boooooat! I mean… BOAT! Boat, boat, boat—"
"Hi guys!"
"Olaf! Look! Boat!" the princess shouted in glee. She swiftly took the little snowman into her arms and abruptly ran towards the bridge leading onto the main deck of the ship. Her movements were both exaggerated and energetic and a hilarity to watch, though dangerous at the same time.
"Anna! Settle down. Be careful!" Elsa shouted in concern. If there was one thing Anna was well known for is for being clumsy. She let out a sigh knowing that her sister couldn't hear a word she said.
"Hmm, have you noticed Anna seems a bit different?" A male voice stated in a slightly sarcastic tone. The queen turned to see Kristoff walking up to her with his best friend and companion reindeer, Sven. She let out a chuckle when she noticed Sven panting happily as it looked at the ship it was about to board.
"This will be her first time visiting another kingdom so there's a chance she may be a little skittish about it." Elsa replied with a similarly sarcastic tone.
"Oh really? I didn't notice. She was sooooo calm when she woke me up before there was even a hint of sunlight…" Kristoff smirked as he escorted the queen down the dock and onto the ship. Elsa tried to hide her face as she recalled Anna frantically banging at her door to wake her up. It seems that everyone in the castle had equally similar treatment that morning.
After accompanying Elsa onto the ship, Kristoff turned around to help Sven traverse the thin bridge onto the deck. Though very rocky, the large reindeer somehow made it safely.
"Alright buddy! You're all set to—"
"What's this? Oh what's this? What's that? Oh, oh! This looks super cool!" Kristoff was interrupted by a bombardment of questions from the loud girl fluttering back and forth on the deck of the ship. Trailing behind her was the equally frantic snowman that was equally in awe of the vessel.
"Is any of this really that interesting? Weren't you on a boat, like, a week ago?"
"But, Kristoff, boooooat! Hi, hi! you over there! Could you tell me what this does? Does it actually do anything?"
"Anna, look! You know what this thing is?" Olaf waddled his way towards a large black piece of metal at the edge of the ship.
"Oh, oh, I actually do know what that is… I think… wait yes… no… yes! That is… uh… an… ann core? That sounds about right. An ann core!" Anna smiled brightly as she raised her arms to her chest and shook them in satisfaction of actually knowing what something actually was. She rushed over to the little snowman to observe the curved metal.
"Wooooow. An ann cores are so cool looking. It's like an ornament but huge." Olaf attempted to pick it up. With all his might, he tried to lift the object. Little did he know that his twig arms had popped off his body halfway through his tremendous effort. The princess only giggled as she kept to herself and observed the sight.
Elsa watched on the sideline as well and giggled along with her sister huddled over Olaf. Kristoff crossed his arms as he continued to watch the two.
"Should I tell her that it's actually called 'anchor'?" The large blonde man glanced down to the queen dressed in the more traditional Arendelle attire.
"She didn't get it totally wrong, it just wasn't totally right." She snickered. "It's fine, let them play around for a bit. I don't want to ruin their fun."
"Evening, your majesty, Sir Kristoff. Shall I escort you to your rooms?" One of the crewmen asked the two individuals.
"I'll be over in a moment. I would like to enjoy the view a bit longer." Elsa replied in a graceful and calm manner.
"I'm gonna have to pass as well. Who knows what kind of trouble feisty pants over there will get into?" Kristoff snorted as he glanced back to the excited redhead running across the wooden floors. The crewmen turned to see the princess running along the edge of the ship with her arms spread open like a bird in flight.
"This is amaaaaazing!" Anna cried out in glee while taking a grip of the sail and swinging on the ropes. The man smiled and nodded his head.
"Understood, I will see to it that none of your luggage is missed. If there is anything you need, do not hesitate to call. We will be setting sail soon." He took a bow and made his exit behind them and back to the dock. As the man left them alone once again, Kristoff looked back to Elsa looking at Anna.
"So, where's blue eyes been? I haven't seen him all morning. Normally, he's instigating trouble and 'poking the bear'." He said jokingly as he pointed over to Anna still skipping around the area.
"I'm not quite sure. I haven't seen him since yesterday when he went with Anna to pack."
"He went with Anna? Alone? Together?" he quickly replied, clearly agitated by the new information.
"Aren't you the little worry wart?" Elsa began giggling as she watched him lose his cool for a moment.
"Well, no, but… I mean, she didn't really say anythi—"
"Don't worry too much about him and Anna. It seems that they've known each other for a long time now. He's always spending a lot of time with her. Her 'imaginary friend', though, you and I both know that he's not so imaginary. I'm sure he was only keeping her company. I'm sure." She responded to him with her unwavering demeanor similar to when she addresses the servants and townsfolk. Kristoff only looked at her in suspicion.
"Hmm… Does he happen to spend a lot of time with you as well?"
This left the queen speechless. Her body tensed suddenly and it was clear her facade was faltering. She remained quiet with her head tilted to the floor.
"You've been keeping up that front for a while. I may worry here and there but it looks like you've had this on your mind for a while. My advice, your majesty, is talk to him." Kristoff puffed his chest out slightly.
"So… you know?" Elsa's speech was quiet and a bit insecure. Kristoff began to well up with pride.
"Of course I know. I lived my whole life with a family of love experts. It's only natural I at least understand a thing or two. Although…" The tall man knelt down to observe her figure with an almost analytical vision. "It's hard to tell since you've got a defensive barrier around you at all times. Want to know how I figured it out?"
Elsa peered at him curiously as she tried to find reason to his discovery. "How did you figure it out?" she asked sheepishly.
"You said, 'I'm sure' twice. The first time you said it was for me but the second time, I think, was meant for you. Not bad detective work if I do say so myself." He let out a single laugh as he dusted off his shoulder. Elsa puffed her cheeks and pouted her lips with slight irritation. When he finally took notice, he let out a chuckle. "Go talk to him. Break a few walls and see how it goes. Who knows? You could have a lot more in common than you— Hey! Sven, no, bad! Get away from that ledge! It took forever to dry you off the first time!"
With the conversation ending abruptly, the blonde man rushed over to his friend to pull the other half of his body off of the railing he got himself stuck on. Elsa giggled quietly before taking a deep breath. She was riddled with her own thoughts of questions and doubts. Everything was so new to her and it was happening so suddenly.
"All aboard, we're setting sail!" The captain called out one last time. With the final call, the last few crewmen and guards at the port all began boarding the ship. It was time to travel to Corona. There was only one problem.
Where's Jack?
As the waves continued to send the ship rising and falling ever so subtly, Elsa couldn't help but feel uneasy with the idea of leaving Jack behind. Then again, he never said that he would join them on their journey or if he would even bother accompanying them to the kingdom. She started to grow tense at the thought of him not being with them. He wasn't really a large part of her past but he was a huge part of her new life. It was unsettling for him to simply walk away.
"Elsa! Elsa, Elsa, Elsa! Look! We're actually moving! We're moving, we're moving, we're moving!" Anna cheered ecstatically as she took hold of her older sister's arm. She began jumping joyfully while looking back to her sister and the kingdom moving off in the distance. The queen took a glance at her castle she had locked herself away in for so many years. To see it so far away gave her a sense of both fear and relief.
"Yeah… we're moving on." Elsa replied softly.
"What was that?" Anna smiled delightfully. She was too distracted to hear what her older sister had said to her. Elsa let out a content sigh as she hugged her little sister.
"It's nothing. Never change, Anna."
The little girl's face turned slightly pink from the sudden embrace. It was rare for Elsa to initiate a hug but in no way was it not welcomed as Anna wrapped her arms around Elsa.
As Elsa pulled away from the hug, she took another glance at their kingdom. From her point of view it was no bigger than her thumb. She let out one last smirk before turning to look at Anna completely locked around her. The past is in the past. It's time to move on.
Anna stood idly by at the bow of the ship as she looked over the ocean horizon. After so many hours, she was still not satisfied with the scenery. Kristoff stood at her side and remained quiet as the girl continued to ramble about the many things she wanted to do once they docked at Corona. Olaf took his beloved seat on top of Sven's back as the reindeer casually traversed every inch of the ship in curiosity.
Elsa, on the other hand, took the opportunity to catch up on some literature that she had missed out on throughout the past months prior to the coronation. She missed the feeling of being engrossed in a mythical world that had no relation to her own. The months leading up to her coronation and the days that followed were filled with an insurmountable amount of paperwork and meetings. Being invited to Corona gave her a legitimate excuse to return to her usual routine.
*Knock, knock, knock*
"Come in." She called out. That was something she wasn't so used to, allowing someone to enter her room after a knock on the door.
"Looks like I got the right room first try." A cheeky voice responded as the door opened. "Then again, it wasn't too hard to figure out. Just assume the queen's room has a bigger entrance." The boy laughed to himself. Elsa immediately shut the book she was reading to see that it was Jack standing in front of her, albeit slightly awkwardly and… injured… again?
"Why are you always hurt when I see you, Jack?" She replied in concern. He had several scuff marks on his face and hands and a small tear on his right sleeve. She got up in preparation to treat him but he simply waved it off.
"You don't need to worry, it wasn't anything bad. I was just playing with some kids at the old man's place and… that doesn't sound right… let me rephrase that. I went to visit Ombric at his place or 'Saint Claussen' and a couple kids were raring for a snowball fight. Needless to say, I won." Jack puffed his chest in pride. However, it was short lived as he began to slowly deflate. "Then North decided to join in…"
Jack shuddered at the recollection of the event. However, while he was lost in thought, he hadn't noticed Elsa crouch over and take his hand to mend the small wounds. "Hey, it's not too bad. You really don't need to treat it, you know." He responded with a slightly flustered expression.
"Regardless if it's small or not, it's always better for it to heal faster." She continued to tend to his hand. Jack continued to watch as she meticulously wrapped his hand as she always would. A subtle smile came across his face as he exhaled.
"You know, you're like an overprotective housewife." He smirked as he slowly leant forward to get a better look at her handiwork.
Elsa halted for a moment as she was in shock of the comment. She quickly turned her head up as she was about to respond. "I am not a—" The girl had failed to notice that Jack was moving in for a closer look. Suddenly, both their lips were pressed against each other. Neither of them were prepared for the moment and they were both equally in shock of the situation.
The two were completely bug eyed and unsure of what to do next. Cohesive thought had completely abandoned them in the few seconds that felt like centuries. Noticing Elsa's face turning red and his own cheeks getting warmer, Jack pulled back slightly, finally breaking the connection. He continued to back away slowly without saying a word, his mouth remained stiff.
Elsa, on the other hand, was slack jawed the moment they broke apart. Her cheeks were simply a slight shade of pink and she at no point broke eye contact with the winter spirit, seemingly in a trance. As her thoughts began returning to her, the situation was being reconstructed in her mind. Piecing together each moment bit by bit, her face grew an even brighter red and beads of sweat began trickling from her forehead. Unconsciously, she had formed a small snowstorm around her as she fell further into slight dread and confusion.
Jack, on the other hand, finally took grasp of the situation as he took notice of her powers leaking out once again. Looking around him, he could clearly see her incredibly troubled expression. "Uh… Elsa… Elsa, listen, it was an accident." His eyes were more fixated on the storm that seemed to be growing stronger in the room. "Elsa, I didn't mean to do that. It was a simple mista—" Suddenly, Jack was pelted with snow as the powder continued to pile and compress around him into an enormous snowball.
Her eyes were almost empty as she shakily proceeded forward. An ominous dark aura was emitting from her body as she looked upon the guardian in front of her being bombarded by snowballs that continued to pile in the room. The boy continued to try and burrow his way through the whole thing and reason with her.
"Calm down! You need to calm down Elsa! This is getting out of—"
"First kiss… that was my… first kiss… You took it… Devilish… Criminal… Mom, I'm sorry…" Elsa's face was turning pale as she began to twirl her finger to call forth even more snow from herself. It was becoming increasingly more apparent that she was no longer in a right state of mind. Using the opportunity where she was gathering energy at her fingertips, he concentrated all his power into his staff and expelled it all at once, erupting the dense snow that entrapped him. He then shot forward and grabbed hold of queen, landing themselves on top of the bed.
"Listen to me! You're overreacting! You have to calm down, Elsa!" He shouted again as he held her arms together while she was struggling to get free.
"No! I will not calm down! How could a first kiss not mean anything! Shameless! Awful! Let go of me!" She began flailing her legs wildly, attacking his shins as her powers continued to pour from her and engulf the room in her anger.
"If this keeps going on, who knows how much the ship can handle! Can't you feel it rocking like crazy? Think of the people on the boat. Think of your sister!" He attempted to reason with her one last time. It seemed to have worked as the weather began to subside to a small snowfall and the frost in the room began retracting. He could hear her quietly sniffling as he continued to hold onto her. "There, there, it's alright. There's nothing to worry about."
"How could you say it didn't mean anything?" She quietly whimpered while gripping at his sleeves. Jack looked down at her curiously before a large grin formed on his face.
"I said I didn't mean to do it. I didn't say it didn't mean anything. Also, I got to steal the first kiss of the queen. That more than means something!" He said jokingly with a smile on his face as his arms wrapped tighter around her. He let out another chuckle when he noticed her face turning bright red again. "So the queen can get angry, upset, and embarrassed." He poked her puffed cheeks gently while snickering.
Elsa continued to grip at his sleeve but quickly elbowed him in the stomach. He let out a loud grunt from the attack but was still laughing, however.
"And she's violent too. You're more like your sister than you let off." Jack continued to snuggle her as he rested his head on top of her hair. "Not gonna lie, it's nice to see another side of you that isn't all about busywork and gracefulness. You're allowed to let loose sometimes."
Her lips began to curl as all the barriers she had put around her began crumbling like dominoes. She continued to slouch further as her back continued to rest against his chest, unwilling to let go of his embrace. They both remained silent as they thought about the event earlier. She was actually thinking of a way to thank Kristoff for the advice, granted, it wasn't talking that broke her shield.
As he quietly held her in his arms, he suddenly realized that, though Elsa had finally calmed down and her little snowstorm had subsided, the ship was still rocking like crazy. Turning to the frosted opaque windows of the ship, he began wiping it down to get a better look outside. What he saw horrified him. Just outside were black clouds blanketing the skies as a tremendous thunderstorm raged on and towering waves crashed against the ship.
