Chapter 15 - Halfway Through
My tears soaked my already grimy clothes as I hugged my knees tighter to my chest. The sobs shook my body through until I was shivering, and I banged my head back on the door continuously until I was sure that either my skull was cracked or if not, it was definitely bruised. It was then that I heard it - a creak. A quiet creak, but definitely a creak. And it was coming from behind me. What was behind me?
The door.
I stood up, my tears already drying on my cheeks. I had hope. Hope - the only thing stronger than fear. I kept pounding continuously on the door with my fists, with my back, with my fists again - but nothing would work. It was exhausting, and I was tired already, so that didn't help. The room stank with the putrid smell of rotting flesh, which put me off entirely, but I kept going - thinking of Todd and the children trapped up there in the cage, and it spurred me on.
The door eventually cracked a bit, and then swung open, making me fall backwards into another room, equally as dark as the one beforehand, except this one smelled clean. Like, of soap. It was weird - there was water on the floor in suddy puddles, and there were gaping holes in the roof high above with gauze woven across them. It had large white walls with damp marks and I was just trying to work out what exactly a room like that would be used for in a torture chamber when - I gasped with surprise and horror. A torrent of water was chucked over me from above and I tried to swim to the top of the rising pool of water as I heard the muffled sound of the Mayor's voice.
"Enjoy your shower, dearie?" He said maliciously.
Soon enough the water drained out of the room, apart from some joining the sud puddles dotted across the floor, and I saw a staircase emerge out of one of the walls. Cautiously I made my way up, dragging my heavy legs with each paintful movement. Luckily, the stairs only led to the original room - the one where the Spackle worked and where my family were trapped - but my heart sank when I saw that I was only halfway through the chamber...there was still the same amount of torture weapons and rooms to go through as I had just completed. My body was weary and that was the last thing I thought about before I collapsed into a sodden heap on the cold concrete floor.
