I'm so sorry for not updating in over a month. I was feeling just so uninspired. But here's a long chapter as an apology from me. And to show I'm really sorry, I have a lovely surprise for all you lovely Galeniss shippers. Hope you like it.
...***...***
"Katniss, that's the most stupid thing I have ever heard and mind you I was there when you said wanted to taste crickets."
"What?"
"It's true. You wanted to eat them raw and while they were still alive."
"No, I meant when you said what I said now about Gale was stupid."
"Well, it is. You told me Coin wanted to kill you so you didn't pose a threat. And when she couldn't kill you, she killed Prim to break you."
"Yes. And she used Gale's bomb to do it."
"Exactly. She used Gale's bomb. Not Gale. Was he wrong to make that bomb? Yes. But I don't think in a million years he would have thought how it might be used. He and Beetee made a great mistake in making that bomb. But tell me Katniss, if one uses a gun and someone dies, who will you blame? The person who used it or the person that made them."
"Why are you defending him?"
"I'm not defending him. I'm saying the truth. Or at least what I feel is the truth. Gale was a lot many things but he never hated Prim. He always loved her. Remember when you were in the games the first time and you thought Prim and I were going to starve? We would have without him. Yes, Peeta's father did give us bread twice but Gale, he would always try to give us half of what he caught that day. We had to force him to give us less because he had his own family and there were more of them than us. He was with us even when he was sure you loved Peeta. And then remember that time when we were in 13 and we had to go to the bunkers underground because of the bombs. Gale risked his life to make sure Prim was able to make it in."
"He did love Prim like he loved Posy. We both did. I mean, we both loved each others siblings." I say finally.
"Exactly. I know he was wrong to make that bomb. I'm sure, he regrets it more than we can imagine."
"I guess. It was nice seeing him after all those years."
…***…***…
"I still can't believe you didn't tell me about Gale." Johanna says for the fifth time today. We are at the station and Johanna's train is about to leave in 5 minutes and she still can't drop it.
"Will you stop now?"
"When are you mentioning it to Peeta?"
"I still don't see the big deal but I'll mention it to him when I go back in two weeks to sign the divorce papers."
"Hmm. Alright."
"I just love how you were so busy obsessing over that you didn't even ask me how my first day went."
"It was good. You liked it. Your little smile told me how it was."
The train whistles signaling it was time to go. Johanna hurries onto the train. She waves at me from her window just as the train starts moving. I wave back.
The train soon turns a corner and disappears from sight.
I sigh remembering my empty house. My mother had to cut her trip short as there had been an emergency. A pipe had burst in 8 injuring 20 people and everyone at the hospital was needed.
I turn around and run into the last person I expected. Gale again.
"We really have to stop running into each other at the station." He says with a smile.
"Yeah. What are you doing here?"
"Visiting. You?"
"I live here."
"I know that. I mean here, at the station?"
"Dropping off Johanna."
"Oh, where is she?" he asks looking around.
"Her train just went away."
"Right. It was your birthday yesterday, right? Happy Belated Birthday."
"You still remember."
"Yeah, why should I? It's not like you were my best friend or something." He says sarcastically.
"Alright. Thank you."
"Too bad I don't have a gift on me right now."
"It's alright. How long are you here anyway?"
"3 days. That's just about how long I could take off from work."
"Great. Do come visit me sometime in those three days. Posy knows where I live. She will tell you."
"Sure. See you later."
…***…***…
Later is two days later. He doesn't come to visit me but I meet him in the woods. After three days of teaching I needed to relax myself already so I came into the woods. And there is he as well.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him.
"Well, I found my sister kissing a guy I didn't know. When I stopped her and threatened the guy if he ever touched her again, my sister turned on me and told me he was her boyfriend and was furious at me. That still didn't mean it was alright. In short, we got into a fight and I came here to calm myself down. Woods still calm me."
"Same here."
"So how are you?" he asks me.
"Good. I'm great. Apart from the fact I'm two weeks away from my divorce, just great."
"What divorce?" he asks me surprised.
"You don't know? Peeta and I are divorcing after seven years."
"What happened?"
"Us. It was good while it lasted but now it had become more of shouting match so we tried to make it right somehow but it didn't work. So we finally called it quits."
"I'm sorry."
"Nah, I'm good now. It could have been worse."
He nods. I don't want to talk about Peeta now. So I change the subject.
"What about you? Anyone new in your life?"
"There were some but none lasted very long. The longest was two years. Currently there is no one."
"Don't worry, you'll find someone else."
"So will you."
"Yeah."
We sit quietly. The sun has begun to set now. In about half an hour, it'll be too dark here in the forest.
"Time to go back, I guess." He says.
"I guess." But none of us get up. We just sit there enjoying each others company just like we did when we were young.
I look at him after awhile. He turns to me at the same time. I look into his grey eyes. It has a trace of happiness to it I wouldn't have seen when I was young.
"You are happy now." I say stating the obvious.
"There is nothing to be sad about now. My family is safe, they are healthy, they are happy and that's all I wanted to have in life."
I nod. I'm still looking into his eyes and then I realize he is just as intently looking into mine. I don't know how it happens. I don't know who leans or who leans first. Before I know it, our faces are inches away from each other. I can smell him. He still smells like apples.
CRACK! We both turn toward the sound. A deer had stepped on a piece of stick.
And then I realize how close I am to Gale. I pull back just as Gale does the same. He looks as shocked as I feel at what was about to just happen.
"I'll see you around." He says.
"Yeah, later." We both turn and run away quickly from there.
…***…***…
I don't get to see him the next day before he leaves. After yesterday, I feel too weird to go seek him out and I think he must feel the same way because neither does he come to see me.
…***…***…
This was it. It was done. Seven years of marriage broken with two simple signatures. I couldn't believe it. I looked at Peeta. He gave me a little smile.
"This is it, I guess." He says.
"Yeah."
We both exit the Justice building and walked back together to the Victor Village.
"So how are you?" he asks.
"I'm good. You?"
"Also good."
We walk together in silence. When we reach the Victor's Village, Peeta breaks the silence by saying "I got this amazing job in 11. I'm taking it so if you want to come here…"
"Yeah, I might come back after my contract's over."
And then I remember. "Hey, there is something I never mentioned to you. You know how I'm in District 5? Yeah, turns out Rory and Posy live there."
"Who?" and then he remembers. "Gale's siblings" he says.
"Yes."
"So just them? No Gale?"
"He lives in 1 now."
"You know this how?"
"I ran into him a couple of times when he was visiting his siblings. I make it a point to not mention our almost kiss.
"Oh, wow. We weren't even divorced and you already didn't care about us."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, Katniss, you and Gale had a history and you want me to believe that the District you moved into was conveniently the same one as the one where Gale's siblings lived?"
"I seriously did not have an idea. If I really was trying to do, what I think you're accusing me of, then why would I have moved to where his siblings lived? Why not directly where Gale lived?"
"To throw off suspicion that those weren't your intentions? Or maybe you did some research and mistakenly thought that Gale lived there along with his siblings?"
I looked at him incredulously.
"Alright, I know I sound ridiculous but you can't deny it's weird how you moved in 5 and didn't mention to me Gale's siblings were there as well?"
"I didn't realize then that it was big deal."
"Then? You now realize it's a big deal?"
"Yeah. I now realize that. Look, I get it. It was wrong of me to not tell you but considering what we were going through, can you blame me for not wanting to talk to you?"
"Yeah, alright. I'm glad we are over."
"Me too."
We have by now reached my house. I enter my house and slam the door behind me. But can I blame him? He is right to be like that. I would have done the same in his position. But I'm still glad I did not mention my almost kiss with Gale.
