Really late, I know guys. It's just that I wanted this to be good so I had to find the right moment to write it. But then assignments started to come and it just ruined my schedule again like it always does.
Anyway, this is the last chapter and I don't want to make you wait by making a long speech. Not yet, that is. So just enjoy this first :)
Amy woke up just by simply opening her eyes. She immediately noticed it was already bright outside. Courtesy of her habit of not closing her curtains. She stretched and sighed as her body relaxed against her soft covers. It's been a while since she slept that well.
She wondered what day it is today. Only a few more days until she gets back to uni. She's being home-schooled for the meantime because the doctors said she needs a week of rest. Since she missed a lot of lessons from school, she requested to be home-schooled. She can't afford to fail because it's her dream to be in Harvard and who wants their dreams to fail? She stood up and opened her windows.
Perching on her window pane, she breathed in the not-so fresh air of Boston. She smiled. It's been a while, Boston. It feels good to be home. She watched as the streets were filled with people walking fast like they were in a race. With cars speeding away and phones were ringing here and there. Such a busy city and stressful too but that's home to her.
She closed the window. She saw the clock beside her table and was surprised it was almost noon. Wow. She never thought she could sleep that long. She quickly got into the shower. Just as she was about to get into her clothes something caught her eye. She saw a girl in the mirror. She was pale and thin, really thin. A few healing bruises on her abdomen and some on her limbs.
The girl turned around and saw something else more terrifying. There was a large scar on her back. It was not screaming red anymore. The wound was most probably closed now. But the mere sight of it sent shivers down Amy's spine.
It sent Amy back to the jungle and the lions. Then it continued to move forward. Amy tried to stop it but it wouldn't stop. She saw the dark dungeons with the glowing torches. It sent her straight to the big dome with no one else but them, the venomous family of three. Something told her they were lacking one more person but soon as she saw them she felt her blood boil at their identical smirks and golden yellow eyes. She hissed and she came back to reality.
She found herself still standing in front of the mirror. She was gripping the sink so tight her knuckles were white. She saw something else that made her feel worse than seeing the Kabras. There were dark circles under her pale green eyes. There were a few scars and bruises on her faces. Her stomach fell. With her messy wet hair, she looked pretty much like a zombie.
She wanted to look away because the sight of her battered body made her stomach churn. But for some reason she couldn't. The longer she looks the worse she feels yet the more she wants to stay and just look.
Only when the toot of her clock rang out did she realize she should wear her clothes now. After combing her hair and brushing her teeth, she finally reached for her door. It was quiet in the hallway. Fiske must be in the Madrigal base and Dan must be in school. Apparently, schedules won't let both home-schooling and therapy today so that means she's got the house for herself today.
Just as she was approaching the living room, she almost fell down in shock.
"SURPRISE!"
A bunch of confetti fell down and she was surprised to see all of them clapping and cheering for her. Atticus and Dan were holding tubes of confetti poppers. Fiske was standing beside Jake and Sinead. Even Hamilton and the famous Jonah Wizard were there. Ian was leaning against the wall at the back of the room. His eyes glued. If she looked at him longer than she did with the others, then she hoped the others didn't notice it.
Suddenly, the noise died down. She grew anxious. All of them were looking at her as if they expected her to say something. And knowing that he's looking at her intensely doesn't help. She gulped and took in a deep breath.
Amy said, "Come on, guys. You-"
Sinead quickly laid a finger in her lips. "Tut, tut. Hush, Amy."
Amy felt two hands on her shoulder pushing her towards the table. She saw it was Dan who was grinning from ear to ear. Just as she saw the table full of food, her stomach grumbled and her mouth watered. She forgot that she had skipped breakfast. Hamilton pulled the chair for her and smiled warmly. She frowned and Dan forced her to sit down.
"Just sit and eat." Sinead said before removing her finger from Amy's lips.
"But really, you guys shouldn't have done this." Amy said.
They all gathered around the table.
Hamilton crossed his arms. "Well, what should we do with all these food then?"
"Just take these food away and watch movies?" she suggested.
"Wrong!" Dan shouted. "Except the watch movies part."
Hamilton held out two fingers. "You've got two lives left."
Amy rolled her eyes. She knew where this was heading to. "Just sit down and eat." she said without energy.
"Ding, ding, ding, ding!" Dan shouted. "Bring out the grand prize!"
Jake emerged from the kitchen with a cake on his hand. Amy's eyes widened. The tables like really full of food and they even bought cake! Jake placed the cake in front of her. Her heart swelled with happiness. On the cake were the words 'Welcome back, Amy!'.
"Guys..."
"Yes, yes, we know. We're so great." Dan nodded.
"And awesome." Hamilton added.
"And cool." Jonah joined in.
Amy giggled. "Yeah, whatever. But that's not what I meant. What I meant was how are we going to finish all these? You even added the cake!" She gestured wildly at all the food on the table.
Hamilton's eyes widened. "Who ever said the cake was to be eaten?"
As soon as his words sunk in her mind, she felt a hand behind her head. The next thing she knew was that she tasted cake on her mouth. The cake felt really cold and soft against her face. They all snickered. When she raised her head, they all stopped. But she knew, even though with all the icing on her face, that she was red and that they were really trying not to laugh.
She looked at all of them, standing with pursed lips. Then something popped inside of her and she started to chuckle. It then turned into a giggle followed by laughter. After a few more seconds, they all burst into laughter. Tears were streaming down Amy's face which was still covered in icing. She didn't bother to clean it off because it's been a while since she had a good laugh. It's been a while since she will have fun.
Okay. That sounded wrong. It's been a while since she had fun. Though they haven't even started eating yet or something, she knew she will have fun.
And of course, they did. After eating all those food (Who knew they could actually finish all of them?), they all sat down for a movie. As usual, they all fought for the honor of choosing what to watch. Dan and Hamilton wanted an action movie but they weren't even agreeing which movie to watch. Jonah suddenly said he wanted something different. So Ian came up with the idea of cartoons and here comes Sinead, begging to watch Despicable Me 2.
Jake just laughed at the side. Soon everyone was shouting and arguing with each other. In the end, they let Fiske choose. The ended up with Pitch Perfect which was a really nice movie. Since the movie was not that long, they still had time left to play.
"Twister!" Dan shouted.
Sinead stood up. "Scrabble!"
"No! Monopoly!" Jake shouted.
"Children, children!" Fiske stood in the middle. "Do you really need to fight every single time?"
They all looked at him in silence but Fiske can tell that they're screaming 'Yes' in their heads. He just shook his head. "Let's play Monopoly."
Jake pumped his fist in the air. Sinead crossed his arms while Dan pouted. "Not fair." he whispered.
Fiske turned around. "What did you say?"
Dan shook his head furiously. Fiske narrowed his eyes on him. Everyone laughed.
Ian agreed it was a great deal of fun. He watched as Hamilton, Dan, Jonah and Jake played Twister. They were twisting their bodies and their faces were all red with laughter.
"Ha!"
The sound made him avert his attention to the two girls playing Scrabble on the floor. The game looked really serious. It looked like it was Sinead's turn because Amy was looking at her intently. Amy was lying on her stomach with her chin propped on her hand. Her eyes were half-lidded. She placed her hair on one side. She sighed when Sinead finally placed her tiles.
It was now that Ian noticed her face. He noticed small details like her long eyelashes that almost touched her eyes when she closes them. Like how her eyes can change from pale green to jade green. Like how pale she looked. Like how red her hair was against the afternoon sun. He felt his heartbeat increased in a hike. When her turn had ended, she smirked. His heart skipped a beat. His face grew hot.
A burst of laughter forced him to tear his eyes away from her and look at the boys. They were all in a knot of limbs. Tears were streaming down their faces as they tried to untangled themselves. The girls giggled and they all burst out laughing. He sighed. It's not that he's not having fun or that he doesn't want to join them. It's just that he needed to do something and it's driving him a bit mad.
A part of him wanted to do it now. A part of him told him to wait for another day. But he's been waiting and someone has waited for a longer time. If he didn't get this opportunity, it felt like he won't ever get that chance again. And he doesn't want that. He decided to leave early and it looked like no one noticed him slip away.
Amy came out of the shower with a heavy stomach. It's already evening but the food she ate that lunch was still in her stomach. Fiske was going to come home late. So Dan and Amy agreed not to have dinner anymore.
She sat behind her desk and turned the lamp on. Her tutor was going to be around tomorrow so might as well review a bit. And by 'a bit', it actually meant two hours and still counting. Suddenly, her phone chirped telling her she had a new message. She opened the text. Unknown number. She continued to read he message.
Hey! Can you meet me at the park? Remember the tree? Any time would do. I'll be waiting.
That was it. No name or anything. She frowned. The tree? At the park?
They were standing behind a tree that's shielding them from all the people in the park. He leaned on the trunk of the tree and looked at her innocently.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"Leo." he replied bluntly.
Her eyebrows furrowed. "Then show me our face."
He chuckled and ran his fingers through his hair, pushing his hood along the way. He stood straight and started to walk slowly towards Amy. "That's what I like about you, Amy."
She gasped as his voice shifted into something more domestic. Something more familiar.
Of course, it's that bastard. She wanted to ignore his text because she was studying yet a big part of her was pulling her like a magnet, urging her to go. She grumbled in frustration but she still got up and walked out of her room.
It wasn't that chilly when she got out of the apartment but when she got to the park cold wind started to blow. She groaned. She forgot her jacket. Nice going, Amy! She did a face palm. Since she was already at the park, she didn't bother to go back. There were only a few people around. Some were having a picnic while stargazing. Some were wrapped in their blankets trying to get themselves warm as they go for another night on the benches.
The cold wind blew across her face, snatching her attention. She reminded herself she forgot her jacket so she's got to walk faster. She finally reached the tree. She saw him standing there with a big smile on his face.
"Hey." he said.
"Hey." she replied. Then she realized he was wearing a suit. A bit too formal for the park.
"What's with the suit?"
He stepped forward. Her heart started to beat fast in her chest. She gulped when she looked into those amber eyes. She wanted to look away but she couldn't. His eyes were like magnet sucking her in, refusing to let go. She wouldn't even if it changed to golden-yellow just like now. Her eyes widened.
"You didn't take it? I mean, the medication?" she asked.
"Medication? It wasn't medication. It was-" He paused. "Wait, wait, wait. This is not about me. This is about something else."
She raised an eyebrow. He walked towards her. She just realized she was walking back unconsciously when she hit the tree. She left out a small 'oomf!' He finally stopped walking. She was looking at his eyes again and that was biggest mistake she made. she suddenly froze. She didn't feel the cold wind anymore. All she can feel were the goosebumps on her arms.
It was very dark but his golden-yellow eyes were very bright almost as if they were glowing. She gulped as her heart hammered in her chest. Slowly he bowed without taking his eyes away from hers. He offered his hand. She didn't know how long she had him wait for a response but she just couldn't move.
Without thinking, she took his hand. He smiled and slowly led her to the middle. Her mind was all over the place. Yet she could clearly think of what was happening now. The coldness of wind and the sound of speeding cards were long forgotten. All she could feel was her heartbeat. Its sound hammering in her ears.
He pulled her close. Slowly, he moved and she followed him. They must have looked ridiculous to anyone, dancing without music but they do have music. They were swaying to the beats of their hearts.
They were staring at each other. Never blinking nor moving. The color of his eyes were golden-yellow but under that she can see something else. She can still see him. The fiery amber. Sometimes they look like brown. Sometimes they look like fire just like now. They looked like fire dancing. The moonlight reflecting on his eyes shifted as they danced.
"Hey."
All it took was one word from him and everything returned to her immediately.
Ian noticed her eyes left his. She was looking past his shoulder. He smirked. He finds it amusing that he has that effect on her. Then again she has that effect on him too. Let's just say he knows how to hide them better than her. Though his eyes never left her beautiful pale face. Suddenly he felt a pang on his chest. He just realized how he felt about her.
She closed her open mouth. She realized his eyes were not amber but golden-yellow. She felt a shiver went down her spine as the cold night wind blew. Her body tensed up when she realized what they were doing but she did not move away. Then her mind started to return to normal and question started to come rushing in. She met his eyes again.
"What's this for?" Amy asked him.
"Let me tell you a story," he said as they swayed from side to side. "Once there was a girl and a boy. They were both high school classmates. And as we know in high school, parties are really a thing. One night, the boy promised the girl that they would go together but in the end the boy never showed up. So the girl was forced to go to the party on her own."
Amy's eyes widened. "After three years?"
Ian chuckled. "Yes."
Amy frowned. "Why?"
"I promised."
Ian could tell she was thinking again. Most probably reminiscing. The thought made him feel guilty. He didn't mean to just disappear. He was kidnapped then sent to an almost unknown country and was drugged. How can he go back to dance with her?
The words that would come out from her mouth surprised him.
"No, you did not." she said.
He couldn't help but smile. He didn't answer her question right away. He chuckled. She frowned at him. He giggled. "What?" she pouted.
"Oh, Amy, Amy, Amy..." he whispered. He twisted her around so she was facing away from him. He didn't want her to see his face when he says this. "Amy... That's what I like about you."
Her heart almost jumped out of her chest. She must be red now in embarrassment. Her face grew hot. She could feel his breath on her ear. Hot and slow. It was a good thing he couldn't see her now or else she would die out of sheer embarrassment.
"Always so modest. Always so humble." he whispered. Shivers went down her spine.
Suddenly he turned her back around. She lost her footing and slammed back into him. She bit her lip. "Sorry." she muttered.
"No." Something in his voice made her look up at him. She found his bright eyes looking down at her. Her face grew hot. She just hoped it was dark enough for him not to see.
"No, I'm sorry." he said. "I just suddenly disappeared. I didn't even say anything. I didn't do anything. I left everyone. I left you." Before he could stop himself, the last line had already left his sentence. He wanted to hit himself for being so stupid.
Amy just ignored that last line.
"Don't blame yourself. It's not your fault. It's no one's fault. I don't blame them." She knew he understands who them was. "They just wanted their family to be back again. That's why they brought you in."
He was dumbfounded. How could she say that so easily? After all they had done to her, how?
Sensing his surprise, she gripped his arm. "People have to move on, Ian. I may not have completely forgotten what they have done nor forgive them. But sometimes we tend to misunderstand people like them. Sometimes we just have to let go."
He studied her more. He just shook his head. She's different. He knows she is. He felt his heart swell with something he cannot understand but he knew it was a good thing. He stepped back and bowed. He brushed her lips against her knuckles.
"Thank you for this dance." he said. "Thank you for saving me. Thank you for everything."
Their hands remained tangled between them. He relaxed his hand, letting it fall to his side but it did not. He realized it was her. She wasn't letting go.
"Thank you too." She was looking at the ground avoiding his eyes. Something bubbled inside him. She looked so adorable. "I just... I... Just thank you."
She wanted to kill herself now. She even stuttered. She didn't know what happened in her but the next she knew was that she was reaching for his face. With shaky hands, she cupped his cheeks and slowly pulled his head down to hers. She tiptoed and let her lips touch his forehead. Her eyes fluttered close.
She smirked when she felt him shudder under her lips. A wave of satisfaction washed over her. She had never felt this way. He felt hot under her. A certain kind of warmth that made her forget the cold night they were in and it felt like it would last forever until the end.
I don't know if you liked the ending. I wanted it to be nice and sweet and cuddly. You get what I mean? I hope you liked the story and the ending. If you didn't, then I'm very sorry it didn't live up to your expectation.
Oh and about the 39 chapters. I really didn't mean for that to happen. As I've shared to you in earlier chapters, I expected this story to only have 15 chapters. Never really thought it be this long. :P
*And finally I finished editing too! Though that was more of polishing and correcting the grammatical errors. Imma thank you, guys, again because, seriously, if it wasn't for those who supported me while writing this, I wouldn't have finished it and I wouldn't be writing and expressing my frustrations ad ideas. So THANK YOU again! THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY SHIPPER HEART! :)
By the way, keep your eyes peeled. I might have something up my sleeve ;)
Anyway, I want to say thank you. Thank you to those who favorited and followed. Thank you to all of those lovely people who left reviews. Even if you did not do those as long as you read this story of mine, I want to say a big, big, big THANK YOU! I'm not the kind of person who would say a lot of things. So I shall end with an ultra gigantic THANK YOU to everyone!
