As you, guys, know, I have edited the past few chapters of this fic because one day I was bored and I suddenly thought of going back to my earlier writings. I noticed there were a lot of grammatical errors and inconsistencies so I decided to correct them one by one. Nothing changed with the story, if you must know. It remained the same. I just cleared things up a little bit and arranges a few things here and there.
Then I also went back to the reviews you gave me and, really, super thanks to all of you who read my work because, if it weren't for you, maybe I wouldn't continue writing fanfics and improving my writing skills too which helped me a lot in school. Many asked for an epilogue so here I am presenting to you an epilogue. Though I think it's not much of a leap in their relationship...well, maybe a little. It won't go far off, that's all I know.
Anyway I won't talk anymore. I already wrote such a long note. Enjoy! :)
Disclaimer: I don't own 39 clues, or any of the characters except for some minor OCs of mine.
Shouts filled the air and, not long after, graduate caps occupied the skies at Harvard University.
Amy tried to track her own graduate cap. She didn't want someone's cap. What if that someone had head lice? Ew! Anyway, it was really hard to track her graduate cap, of course, since there were a bunch of identical caps around it. But she had faith in her Cahill-trained eyes. Kinda. When she finally got a hold on a cap, she immediately checked if it was hers, hoping that it was. Bingo!
Amy looked around her. All she saw were people in togas clutching onto their diplomas. A smile crept to her face, pride swelled in her chest. Finally! She graduated! Then again it wasn't going to end there. Next year she was planning on taking another degree but first...
"Amy!"
She whipped her head to the side and before she knew it she was tackled to the ground.
"What?" she said, a bit confused. As stupid as it sounded, she actually didn't know who tackled her who was also hugging her right now.
Then the woman pulled away revealing white hair in a pixie cut, dark brown eyes in those dark eyeliner, and that snake nose ring.
"Nellie!" Amy shouted pulling their former au pair back into a hug.
"Woah, woah, not to tight, kiddo." Nellie warned her, patting her on the head.
"I thought you were in New York?"
"I was, kiddo, that was until these two interrupted my beauty sleep." She rolled her eyes at her last words while pointing behind her where Amy saw Fisk and Dan waving at her.
She smiled and ran towards them and also pulled them into a hug.
"Family hug!" Nellie said somewhere behind her then she felt an arm around her squeezing all of them together.
"Nellie!" Amy shouted.
"Ugh! Stop it, Nellie!" Dan complained.
When Nellie released them, Amy saw Fiske walk up to Nellie with his hands on his hips. "Seriously, I am not young anymore! You can't just squeeze me in between young ones like you!"
Nellie just laughed. "Aw, Fiske, I miss you too." And she pulled him into another hug to which Fiske groaned.
"Congrats, nerd." Dan said beside her teasingly.
"Thanks for being here, dweeb. Lemme kiss you." Amy opened her arms to him.
Dan pushed her away. "Noooo!"
Amy laughed at her baby brother. Yeah, even though he was old already. His voice became deep and he was starting to grow some facial hairs now. But whatever happened he was still her baby brother.
Then she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"Sinead?"
"Amy?" Sinead smiled at her.
Amy hugged her tight. "Wow, you're here too?"
Sinead looked at her with a smile. "Of course, my best friend just graduated from her dream school."
"Shouldn't you be somewhere else? I mean, you should be doing something else, right?"
Sinead feigned a look of hurt. "I flew from the other side of the world and this is what you say to me? I'm offended."
Amy couldn't help but grin. She was about to open her mouth when she saw someone walking towards them, rather some people.
"Hope we're not ruining a moment here." Jake held his hands up.
"Yes, you are." Sinead said.
"No, you're not." Amy said at the same time.
A new voice caught their attention. "Girls, girls, there's no need to fight for me." They saw Hamilton walking towards them shaking his head.
"Brag." Sinead commented crossing her arms on her chest.
Something glinted in Hamilton's eyes as he fought back. "Geek."
Amy just rolled her eyes and glanced at Jake who was beside her. He looked good. No, they haven't talked about that yet. She tried talking to him , she really did, and, hell, was it awkward. She tried but it was Jake who told her it was alright. He told her she didn't have to explain. It wasn't as if they were in a relationship that she wanted to talk to him but they had something. As small as it was, it was still something and Amy thought she needed to at least tell him something. Not just for her sake but his as well.
"Congrats, Amy." Jake said beside her.
Amy smiled at him. "Thanks, Jake." Then she looked at Atticus who also congratulated her.
"Congratulations, Amy."
Amy ruffled Atticus' hair to his disliking causing her to chuckle. "Thanks, Att."
"Amy! Amy!" Hamilton was calling her. He walked to her with a phone on hand. "Someone wants to talk to you."
"Huh?" She raised an eyebrow. Reluctantly, she took the phone and brought it to her ear. "Hello?"
All she heard was screaming and...music? Somewhere around the background on the other end she heard a voice. "I have a friend right here. I need you all to shout, 'Hi, Amy! Congratulations!'. Ready? One, two, three."
Hi, Amy! Congratulations!
She had to get the phone off her ear or else she would go deaf. When she placed the phone back onher ear, she heard that familiar voice through the phone, Jonah's to be exact. "Yo, Amy. Sorry I can't make it there. But I hope you heard all the love my homies have for you."
After saying goodbye to Jonah, she handed the phone back to Hamilton. She sighed and watched as the others laughed away. Everything was back to normal. It's been two years since aaeewSthe Vespers and now, for the second time, they won. And hopefully it would be the last time. All Amy could do was smile. She spent the whole day with the old gang. Even Jonah managed to come visit them. They spent their time just like before. Celebrating, talking, laughing. Happiness and gratitude filled her heart. Happy that she finally graduated and grateful that she had a family who cared for her and loved her.
But somehow at the back of her head, a little voice told her it wasn't complete. Someone was missing. Was there?
Actually there was someone.
Ian Kabra.
Well, she didn't have a choice because he wasn't somewhere her and he was unreachable too. Sort of. Well, she knew that he was gone again but this time she knew the reason for it. He was helping the Madrigals, actually he was helping everyone. He volunteered to lead the team that would excavate the Vesper compound in Africa. They had to make sure that the Vespers were finally gone for good.
And who better person to sniff out the Vespers than Ian Kabra? The guy who was part of it, the guy who was directly related to the people who ran it, the guy who went missing for three years, the guy who barged into her high school life, the guy who ruined her prom night, the guy who left her...
She shook her head as she walked across her dorm setting down the boxes. No, she wasn't going to think about that anymore. She knew better than to dwell in the past. People make mistakes and Ian Kabra is most definitely human. She knew he didn't mean to do all the things that he did whether during the clue hunt or during their high school days.
He was different though. The Ian Kabra that once was was no more. That Ian Kabra was a shadow, a shadow of his mother. He was selfish and didn't care about anyone but himself. The Ian she knew was kind and genuine. He wasn't necessarily the kindest of people but he wasn't evil either.
She sighed as she checked her dorm once more for her things just in case she left anything. No time for thinking. She could have a lot of time for that later on the road. Now she had to finish packing her clothes before Fiske came to fetch her.
After some time, she was finished packing. She had already checked every corner of the room for three times now and it looked like she left nothing. She sighed standing in the middle of the room. As stressing the university was, she would miss it. She was going to come back...she hoped she could. She shook her head and picked up her bags heading towards the door.
Knock, knock, knock!
Her movements halted. Who was that? She wasn't expecting anyone...unless it was just Fiske. She nodded. Most probably, she thought. She set her bags on the floor and made her way towards the door. She turned the door knob. "Is that you, Fi-"
Everything slowed down.
Suit clad body with sleeves rolled up neatly.
She couldn't move.
Gel-slicked hair, pulled back properly.
Her breath hitched.
Sinful mouth, stretching to a smirk.
Her eyes widened in surprise.
Warm, amber eyes.
"Seriously? Do I look like Fiske, now?" he asked, his voice laced with that British accent.
She didn't let him finish his thought. She just grabbed him, putting her arms around his neck, and pulled his body towards her. Tears stung her eyes. But, no, she wasn't going to cry. She wasn't going to allow that, even if they were tears of joy. She buried her face at the brook of his neck, his scent reaching her nose.
God, she missed him. For three years, he was gone. For three years, she thought he was dead. For three years, she mourned quietly when she was alone. Then he came back. He wasn't dead after all and she hated him for that. Hated him for making her mourn and feel that way. Of course, she was happy too. Then he left her again although she now she knew where he went and why but still he was not there. He was not by her side.
"I missed you too, Amy." Ian whispered, soft enough for her to hear.
Just then she realized how she actually missed him. She bit her lip. Crap! The tears were about to fall from her eyes. She buried her face deeper into his neck, hoping that he wouldn't feel the few tears that escaped her eyes. Automatically, she felt his arms around her waist holding her tighter. "Amy, Amy, Amy..."
He wanted to see her. For a year, he was gone. Of course, he wanted to see her face, no, he needed to see her face. He tried to pull away but she gripped him tighter. Looks like they were going to be stuck that way for a bit of time. Not that he was complaining, he actually liked it, hugging her this way, taking in her scent, sharing her warmth, feeling the rise and fall of her chest against his own, just feeling her in his arms. He just hoped it wasn't going to take long enough for them to ruin the plan he had for the afternoon.
"Tell me everything."
He asked her what she wanted to hear exactly. Everything, she replied. So he told her everything over a cup of coffee and by everything as in every single thing from the night before the prom to his experience in the Vesper compound.
While he talked, he tried to choose his words carefully. He didn't want to trigger something in her. He was afraid that he might say something that would remind her of what the Vespers did, of what his family did, of what he did. Yet when he did, somehow she knew. She would ask a question that force him to tell her the whole truth. It was as if she could read his mind.
"Am I that obvious?" he asked unconsciously.
She considered his questions for a few seconds. "Not really, but I do get this weird feeling whenever you don't tell me something."
He would have seen that as a threat. His old self would but he wasn't his old self. He was so much different and he actually felt this connection with her that he never felt with anyone. Instead of feeling threatened, he actually felt safe. It felt like he could tell her everything and she wouldn't judge him the way other people do just because he was a Kabra. It made him smile.
"Why are you smiling like that?" she asked after she sips from her cup.
His alarms went off like it always does when she's around. Only for her. And just like always he would cover it up by flirting. "Just thinking how lucky I am to have you."
And there he saw it. That blush rising up her cheeks. She looked adorable, he wasn't going to deny that. He looked straight at her as if challenging her to look at him which she clearly wasn't planning on doing. Yet he knew that wasn't possible sooner or later she would. When she did, they held their gazes. Somehow they just fell in sync. Neither of them wanted to look away.
He found himself lost in those green eyes, the greenest green he has ever seen. A breeze of cool air blew across them. He watched as a strand of hair fell on her face. Without thinking, he leaned across the table and tucked that strand behind her ear. At the same time, the sound of a speeding car broke their trance-like states.
They both looked away and took a sip of their coffee. Ian actually had to finish his cup to lessen the awkwardness in the air. And also to take notice of the waiter looking at them from the inside.
"You know, I think we have to go." he finally spoke up.
Amy, having finished her coffee, chuckled. "I know. That waiter has been looking at us for a while."
Ian shook his head. "We bought some coffee. He shouldn't act like that."
Amy cocked her head to the side. "Well, we have been here for almost three hours now."
"Two and a half, actually." Ian corrected her.
"Yeah, whatever." Amy waved her hand.
He checked his watch and an idea popped in his mind. "It's getting a bit late. I think we could grab some dinner if you want to."
"Are you asking me for another date?" She narrowed her eyes at him.
Something shifted in her gut when his lips curved into a smirk. "Who said this was a date?"
Whatever her coffee had in it, it gave her the confidence to talk back. "Oh, I should be going then..." she said, grabbing her bag and standing up.
She glanced at him, seeing a twinkle in his eyes and his smirk stretching into a grin. But she didn't miss the look of disappointment on his face that gave her a sense of satisfaction that she beat him. She had already walk a few steps when she heard him standing directly behind her making her jump.
"Would some pizza do?"
"I miss this!"
Amy watched as he gobbled up his sixth and last slice of pizza. She just had to laugh because who knew that Ian Kabra, the guy who made women fall to their knees, could surrender to pizza? Well, pizza is one of the best things in the world. Who could resist pizza?
"Slow down, pizza boy." Amy warned him when he almost choked.
He frowned at the last two words. "What?"
Amy just beamed at him. "Nothing."
'Did you just say 'pizza boy'?" He narrowed his amber eyes on her.
She tilted her head. "And if I said yes, what would you do?"
He took a bite of his pizza. "Oh, I'll just say..."
She raised an eyebrow at him.
He met her eyes. "Ice cream hoarder."
She glared at him. "I do not hoard ice cream."
"Yes, you do." He laughed. "I remember once I brought pint of ice cream to our reunion and hours later we find you eating halfway through all of the pints."
Her face grew red in embarrassment at the memory. "Well, I didn't see any signs saying, 'Hands off'" she pouted.
"Actually, you shouldn't have eaten in the first place since we weren't in your house." he said pointing his pizza at her, making his point clear.
"Well, I was craving for some! And it looked really good!" Amy defended herself.
Ian nodded. "Exactly! Just like this pizza!"
Amy sighed. "Touche."
The night went on. Just dinner, they said. They actually walked around for a few more minutes, rather an hour and a half. They talked. They talked about a lot of things. She told him about her college years. She told him about Dan's senior life which led to a bunch of funny remarks about his brother. She told him everything he had missed in the two years he had gone missing again. And when she actually thought she would be angry at him for leaving again, she found herself happy, happy that he was back.
It was around 11 when they decided to return home. They walked along the streets. The cold winds getting stronger as the clock strikes closer to midnight. They were quiet now. No talk, no looks, just walking. Ian wasn't looking at her directly but he didn't miss the shier that went through her when another the cold wind blew. He quickly grabbed her hands and wrapped his hands around hers. He brought it to his mouth and he blew hot air onto their hands. He saw her looking at the pavement and he just smirked, knowing his effect on her. He held her hand and buried it deep in his coat pocket with their fingers intertwined.
After that, in their whole trip, Amy never felt the cold winds anymore because all she could feel was his hand gripping hers tight inside his coat pocket. She ignored the temperature of the air because the awkwardness she felt was so much greater than the chills.
They got back to their apartment. His apartment was already being occupied by another tenant when he disappeared five years ago. So he had to stay with them for the meantime. When they got to the elevator, Amy frowned. How could her heart race like she just ran a marathon when all they did was just walk? How could her stomach dip when they were only on an elevator not a roller coaster?
He was the first one to break the silence.
"Congratulations again, Amy."
She looked at him only to find him looking at her. "Thanks." She smiled and resumed staring at the floors slowly ascending. Silence fell between them again and Amy couldn't bear another second of awkwardness so she decided to speak up.
"Tonight was..." Wow, Amy, nice start. Now finish your sentence, she thought. "Amazing."
He smiled at her. Smiled. It was a genuine smile. "My pleasure."
Ding!
Somehow he was irritated by the sudden interruption of the lift. Yet he was also relieved by it because he almost said something. Something that he thought he was ready to say and at the same time, he thought he didn't. He watched as she stepped off the lift. He didn't realize that he was frozen in place until the elevator doors started to close in front of him. He rolled his eyes at his stupidity but that moment also gave him a surge of strength that led him to where he wanted to be.
"Amy..."
She turned around, her red hair whipping across her shoulders, her green eyes glowing under the dark light of the hallway, her pale face warming to life. And she looked so beautiful which made it both harder and easier to speak.
"I like you." he finally said.
He watched as her face paled again, as her green eyes widened, as her soft lips trembled. Suddenly he felt afraid. Ian Kabra was afraid of a girl. But she wasn't just any girl, after all. She was Amy Cahill, the current leader of the Madrigals, the girl who won the clue hunt, the girl who challenged him, the girl who made him feel like himself.
It all happened in a second then everything slowed down. She was in front of him, her eyes closed, her soft lips against his sending shivers down his spine. Slowly his eyes shut and he started to move his lips igniting fireworks between them. He felt her arms around his neck as he snaked his arms around her waist to pull her closer, to pull both of them closer. All his life he never felt anything quite like this and, god, he wanted more.
But they had to pull away for air. Their foreheads touched and slowly they opened their eyes. Green and amber. So bright it was like they both combusted when they held gazes. They stayed like that for minutes. Fiske could open the door and see them together like that, or anyone else in the same floor could but they didn't care. Because this was so much more important than the opinion of other people.
It was their moment.
Their lips curved into smiles, smiles of joy. Their eyes twinkled with a new light, a light of new hope. Their bodies curled into each other as they pulled closer, as she buried her nose at the crook of his neck, as he rested his chin atop her head. And from then on, things would never be the same.
Tell me how you feel about this ending. I really do hope you, guys, liked it. It's still a bit of a cliff-hanger, I know. I didn't want to go too far into the future because I'm afraid it might be OOC. But at least you know they will be together. Yey? Sigh... I'm such a fail, I know. Moving on, many super thanks to all of my readers. Especially to my past readers, this is all for you.
And a new story? I don't know. Maybe I have something up my sleeve. I don't know too. ;)
