Martian Manhunter was curious. This in itself wasn't very strange. Being an alien to earth often heralds questions about the customs and places on the planet. But the subject of his curiosity was what made it strange.
Spectre Mistborn, the strange girl with the even stranger mind, confused him. From what he learned in his time on earth, human children at her age do not know poisons, and do not often know the content of conversations that occurred outside of hearing range. But she did. The Green Martian started as a black, red and yellow clad form appeared.
"Hiya, Uncle J'onn! What are you thinking about?" Robin was curious too. He knew that something was wrong with the alien. He had been sitting there in the cafeteria of the Watchtower for 10 minutes now, staring at his Oreos. That was strange. Not the Oreos bit, because J'onn loves Oreos, but the fact that they are still on his plate and hadn't disappeared yet, that was puzzling.
"I was simply thinking about the girl you introduced Superman, Flash and I to a few weeks ago. She didn't seem to be a normal human."
Robin giggled. "Of course she isn't a normal human! Casper the Friendly Ghost is about as different from normal as Auntie Diana or Uncle Barry is."
"Casper the Friendly Ghost? I thought we were talking about Spectre Mistborn?" J'onn was still confused. He recognised the name 'Casper the Friendly Ghost', but from a cartoon his niece watched on Mars.
"Oh, it's just my nickname for her. But if you want to know what she can do, then why don't you go and ask her?"
"Batman dislikes metahumans in his city."
"Oh, don't worry. I'll explain it to him. Just go to her floor in that apartment building and she'll meet you there." Robin promptly disappeared, and Martian Manhunter began to eat his Oreos. At least he would get some answers.
At the building in Gotham, J'onn waited silently. He had been there for half an hour, and there was still no sign of her.
"Hello there Martian Manhunter." The alien span around, and behind him, was Spectre. "I apologise for the wait, but I was on the other side of the world when you arrived here."
J'onn nodded. "It is fine. I was wondering if you could answer some questions for me?"
Spectre smiled, her teeth a startling white against the mottled browns of the rest of her face. She walked over to the open edge of the building and sat down. "Take a seat J'onn. This explanation will take a while."
Taking a seat, the alien became more and more confused. How did she know his real name? Could she read minds?
"Now, you wanted to know about my abilities, correct?"
"Yes, because it confused me that you, a child of eight years of age, would know so much."
Spectre leant back, and after a moment, was mimicked by Martian Manhunter. "Well, that all has something to do with my abilities. You know that I can fly, but you don't know how."
Spectre stood, and at a gesture from the girl, the Martian remained sitting. Spectre stepped out into open space and hovered there, without any kind of strain.
"I am only able to fly because of my connection with the wind." Spectre initiated a breathtaking aerial dance, including free falls. It almost gave J'onn a heart attack. "The wind is privy to almost everything. It has witnessed conversations, deaths and births, battles and peace treaties. And all that it has seen, heard, smelt and felt has come to me."
J'onn looked at her in wonder and confusion. If Spectre meant what he thought she meant, then that would make her one of the most informed person in the world. "I think I understand what you mean, but in case I didn't, could you explain it again?"
Spectre nodded. Her explanation often baffled the few who heard it. "The wind is everywhere, and is constantly picking up information. It has been around since the dawn of time in all worlds, and the start of time in this one. The wind has witnessed things on different planets, including your own.
It witnessed the destruction of Krypton, Superman's home planet. My ability is to have a connection with the wind, so that I know everything it knows. So while I have been on this earth for 8 years, I have the knowledge of billions and trillions of years. That's how I knew about your conversation with Superman, the Flash and Robin. That's how I knew what poison Batman had been infected by, and the antidote to it. I know everything, or almost everything there is to know about your home planet."
Martian Manhunter was reeling. This girl held the knowledge of every year, every day that this or any other universe had ever experienced. The amount of knowledge should have broken her mind… There he had a thought. "That's why I couldn't stay too long in your mind. My mind didn't have the ability to contain so much information, and would have rendered me into a catatonic state if I remained. That's what all those colours and sounds were!"
Spectre clapped and grinned. "I knew you would get it! But there is a drawback or two to my powers."
J'onn leant forward. He wanted to know all he could about this kind of thing. "What drawbacks?"
"Well, I cannot receive new information in an air locked room, or underwater. Unless and new supply of air comes from the surface, or new air is let in, then I would simply have everything I knew up until the point of isolation."
"So how do you know everything about other planets? You have never been there, I don't think?"
"Spaceships that land on planets gain some wind from that place, and holds all that information on the trip back to earth. Similarly, when taking a zeta-beam from one point to another, you bring back the air that you breathe in. When you breathe out, the wind carries the information to me."
"What was the other drawback?" J'onn asked.
"Well, I can't read minds. So if a villain had a plan, but didn't draw it out, write it or tell it to somebody else, then I won't know what that plan contains until it occurs. The same is with anything else. I have no clue as to what is inside people's heads."
"Oh…" J'onn was overwhelmed with the amount of information he was given. "Thank you for explaining things to me Spectre. It has been… enlightening."
"Anytime J'onn. If you need me, whether it be for information, back up or just to talk, then call out for me and I will be there." With that, Spectre moved from her previous hovering position and grabbed the backpack she had left beside the shell shocked Martian. "If that is all, I have something to do."
Without giving J'onn tie to reply, she was off, a black, grey and purple speck against the rapidly darkening sky. And even that soon disappeared. J'onn made his leave as well, heading back to the Watchtower. The small girl had made a large impact on the green Martian.
Hey Everyone! Sorry about the longish wait! I hope that answers any questions about how Ghost knows so much. If you didn't understand any of her explanations, then try this: The Wind and Ghost are one. The wind knows everything, and so does Ghost. The wind giver her that information.
If that still confused you, then send me a review or PM and i will try to explain further. But communicating with the wind isn't all Ghost can do! Ghost will be meeting other members of the Justice League soon!
