Do You Love Me?

"Lysander?"

He looks at her. "Yes, dear one? What troubles you?"

Hermia looks down, a gentle blush mantling her cheeks. "Well… I was just wondering…"

He stops walking. Taking her chin in his large hand, he tips her head to look him in the eye. "Dearest, I pray you, tell me what is on your mind." He smirks. "Else I'll be forced to tickle you till you turn blue."

She smiles, and looks up at him through her lashes. "You wouldn't…"

"Oh, believe me, dear one, I would."

She giggles and grabs his hand, leading him off the path into the trees a ways. She stops at the base of a towering oak, and lays a hand on its rough bark. "I used to come here as a girl," she says, looking wonderingly up at its overarching boughs, "Helena and I would sit here for hours an end, and tell each other our deepest, darkest secrets."

He raises a brow, confused. "Are you suggesting we do the same? Because-"

She shakes her head and tugs him gently to the ground, settling herself beside him, shoulders just barely brushing, on the soft moss. "Lysander," she says again, "I need to know. Do you love me?"

He stares at her in shock, and she looks down again. "I- I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pressed you-"

He cuts her off, pressing his lips to her palm in a gentle kiss. "Hermia, I love you forever and always, with all my heart," he murmurs, dropping her hand slowly into her lap. "Surely you knew this?"

She blushes a bright scarlet, and burrows her head into his chest. "I- I wasn't quite sure," she squeaks, her voice gone high in embarrassment, "and you never really said-"

He wraps her in his arms and pulls her tight against him. "I never thought it needed be said. I thought you simply knew that I do, as I know you love me."

She sighs, leaning into his embrace. "I do love you, Lysander. More than I can ever say. More than the stars, and the moon, and, and diamonds, and—"

"Ahaha! No need to get carried away, love. I'm sure if someone offered you a Lysander-sized diamond, you'd trade me for it in a second."

"No no!" she exclaims, frantically flapping her hands, "I'd never do that! I—Oh! You're teasing again."

He snickers at her expression, and she smacks him gently on the arm. "Stop making fun of me, Lysander, it's not gentlemanly!"

He just keeps laughing, and eventually, Hermia gives up and relaxes back against him. They sit for a while in companionable silence, simply enjoying the others company. At last, Hermia breaks the silence. "Lysander?" she whispers sadly, "Do you think we'll ever be together? For real, I mean, not just meeting in the woods, but married?"

He does not answer immediately, but his grip on her shoulders tightens, as if the very thought of losing her to some other man is unbearable. "I don't know, love," he says eventually, "But I know this. I love you, Hermia, more than life itself. I cannot know the future, I cannot say what plans the Gods have in store for us, but so long as you want me, I will be by your side. Always."

Hermia smiles slightly, leaning against her love and melting into his warmth, letting his words wash over her like a gentle rain. Even if the future was unsure, at least for now they were happy.

For now, they could be together and not worry about tomorrow.

For now, this was enough.
