A/N: You may be very confused by this chapter. Don't worry, I'll update soon. A lot needs to be set up in the first few chapters. Greg looks like young Benedict Cumberbatch (which is very important). Please review, it induces me to continue.
In which Greg is very confused
Greg blinked. This history class was so boring that all he could do was doodle on his notebook. He couldn't wait for his next class, English. The students were supposed to bring a favorite book to class and read out loud from it. He had brought his four favorites, because why not? They were all good. He reached under his desk for his backpack, to make sure they were all there.
Greg blinked. He froze, one hand holding his backpack. He was now sitting on a flight of stairs. Why? He stood up and looked around. This room wasn't his classroom! It was very familiar, but not from real life. How on Earth could this be… but it had to be it! No. The TARDIS was fictional, Doctor Who was a TV program, and any moment he would snap out of this and back into history class. He slapped himself to make sure, yelped in pain, and dropped his backpack. He wasn't daydreaming. He was really standing in the TARDIS console room. "Hi, anyone who's here!" he shouted. "Beware Me!"
"Are you all right, Greg?" asked a puzzled Scottish accent at his elbow. He turned and looked at the owner of the voice. Ok, Amy Pond. This was getting weirder every second.
"I'm fine," he answered to be polite.
"Good. I thought you were hurt. And how'd you change so fast?"
"Um, what do you mean?"
"Your shoes are… well… less old, and your shirt is different."
"Uh…"
"Hullo, Greg! Don't scare him, Pond, he's new."
"Oh, hi Doctor. I just got here, so how do you know who I am?"
"This is the first time you've met me, but this isn't the first time I've met you."
"Oh. That makes sense. I suppose," Greg said, trying to go along with him.
"You jump through my timeline."
"Oh." Greg mentally choked. What the Merlin was going on here?
"We were going to a museum," Amy told Greg.
"Alfava Metraxis after that. Wait, why did I say that?" And how did these people know him so well?
"You say random things sometimes. Don't let it worry you."
"Um, I didn't before, so why now?"
"I don't know. Maybe the Doctor knows."
"Possibly. Possibly not." Greg tugged the sleeves of his battered black leather jacket down and noticed a large watch-like thing on his wrist. Vortex Manipulator, he thought, and made a mental note to ask about it later. Maximilien Robespierre, this was confusing!
"Greg, Pond! Nearly there!"
"Okie," said Greg, and he and Amy went up to the console.
"Vworp vworp," went the TARDIS.
"Think I'll stay," Greg responded to the Doctor's unspoken question. Amy and the Doctor left the TARDIS, leaving Greg alone with his thoughts, in such disorder as they were. He went and sat down in the pilot chair again and pulled out his journal. First he tried to get his thoughts in some degree of order. Ok, somehow I'm in Doctor Who, apparently. Mega-weird, but should be fun if I don't go insane first. And kind of like River, then. So this thing on my wrist is definetely a Vortex Manipulator. Hmm... Lessee... "Come here, ickle pencil," he muttered, fishing around in his backpack. Yaghh... The next thing he heard was River saying, "Oh, and I could do with an air corridor."
Greg glanced up. The Doctor and Amy were back in the TARDIS, and the Doctor appeared to be (as far as Greg could tell) inputting coordinates. Greg decided to go back to sleep. He heard Amy's "What was that? What did she say?" and somewhat foggily muttered: "Coordinates, Pond."
"Coordinates," answered the Doctor. "Lestrade, sleep is not usually had while sitting in that chair. Unless you want to commit suicide, then it's very good at breaking your neck while you're sleeping."
"I highly recommend not committing suicide and coming here instead."
" Like I said on the dance floor, you might want to find something to hang on to."
"River, why are you… OH!" Greg whacked himself in the forehead with his journal as the Doctor went whoo! and River sailed in the door, landing on top of the Doctor.
"Doctor?" said Amy.
"River?" said the Doctor and Greg at the same time.
"Follow that ship," said River, and winked at Greg. They followed the ship. But sometimes life isn't so simple, and that was followed by: "They've gone into warp drive. We're losing them. Stay close."
The Doctor was trying to do that, and said so.
River looked meaningfully at Greg. Stabilisers, he mouthed.
"Use the stabilisers," said River.
"There aren't any stabilisers." That, of course, was the Doctor.
"The blue switches."
"Oh, the blue ones don't do anything, they're just blue."
"Yes, they're blue. Look, they're the blue stabilisers." River pressed them, and the TARDIS, which had been shaking as much as Greg, stopped. "See?"
The Doctor was not happy. "Yeah. Well, it's just boring now, isn't it? They're boring-ers. They're blue boring-ers."
"Yeah, well look on the upside Doc. The TARDIS isn't shaking now, so…"
"So what, Lestrade?"
"So River here can fly the TARDIS better than you, eh Doc?"
"Doctor, how come she can fly the TARDIS?" asked Amy.
"You call that flying the TARDIS? Ha!"
Greg coughed sharply and meaningfully, jerking his head at River, who was trying to say something.
"Okay," she said, "I've mapped the probability vectors, done a fold-back on the temporal isometry, charted the ship to its destination, and parked us right along side."
"Parked us? We haven't landed."
"Of course we've landed. I just landed her."
"But, it didn't make the noise."
"What noise?"
" You know, the (wheezing)." Greg did it with the Doctor.
"It's not supposed to make that noise. You leave the brakes on."
"Yeah, well, it's a brilliant noise. I love that noise. Come along, Pond, Lestrade. Let's have a look."
" No, wait. Environment checks."
"Oh yes, sorry. Quite right. Environment checks." The Doctor opened the Tardis door and looked out. " Nice out."
" We're somewhere in the Garn Belt. There's an atmosphere. Early indications suggest that-" River was cut off by-
" We're on Alfava Metraxis, the seventh planet of the Dundra System. Oxygen rich atmosphere, all toxins in the soft band, eleven hour day and chances of rain later."
" He thinks he's so hot when he does that," said River and Greg.
" How come you can fly the Tardis?"
" Oh, I had lessons from the very best."
" Well, yeah." Greg snorted. As if, Doc.
"It's a shame you were busy that day. You're a good teacher, Greg. Right then, why did they land here?"
" They didn't land."
" Sorry?"
" You should've checked the Home Box. It crashed."
River left, after giving a package to Greg.
" Explain. Who is that and how did she do that museum thing?" said Amy.
"It's a long story and I don't know most of it. Off we go."
"What are you doing?"
"Leaving. She's got where she wants to go, let's go where we want to go."
"Are you basically running away?"
"Yep."
"Why?"
"Because she's the future. My future and Greg's."
"Can you run away from that?"
"I can run away from anything I like. Time is not the boss of me."
"You can't run away from everything. Like the Oh-Look-I-Destroyed-My- Planet-And-Commited-Double-Genocide Incident."
"Most things I can. And I had no choice in that, Lestrade."
"There's always a third option, remember? And maybe you can run, but you can't hide."
"Hang on, is that a planet out there?"
"Yes, of course it's a planet."
"You promised me a planet. Five minutes?"
"Okay, five minutes."
" Yes!"
"But that's all, because I'm telling you now, that woman is not dragging me into anything."
"Ha," said Greg affably.
"What now?"
"If you only knew what River'll drag you into in the future."
"What?"
"Spoilers," Greg grinned. He folded a note he'd been writing in quarters.
Amy looked at him. "Are you coming?" she asked.
"No, I need to process. Plus, not too fond of certain… things. Amelia Pond?"
"Yeah, Greg. Got the serious voice, so I'm listening."
"Good, because this is important. The eyes are the doors of the soul. Remember that."
"I will."
"And this note is important. Read it very soon."
"Why can't you just tell me?"
"Takes too long."
"The eyes thing, what is it? Explain."
"Can't. Spoilers. But eyes are doors. Don't blink, and don't look at the eyes."
"Got that."
The Doctor and Amy left, leaving Greg alone with his thoughts and a mysterious package.
A/N: Mysterious package from River. Hmm... wonder what could be in there? If anyone wants to know what's in the note Greg gave Amy, PM me. I think you can guess from the episode, though.
