Chapter 1
Authors note on this: Wonder of U will be changed a bit, due to how outrageous it originally was. Like, its impossible for there to be any sort of challenge fighting at all if it was the same as canon. So, here are the tweaks. The calamities are generally weaker and have less permanent effects (so bumping into something doesn't accidentally take out half of their bone structure). And the calamities will vary in power depending on the magnitude of pursuit. If its just the intent of a friendly fight, it may not be too bad, but the intent to kill may cause stronger calamities. The stand itself will be a quirk (so quirk-canceling cuffs and erase work on it) and it will have sentience to a degree. Unlike the original, it won't be posing as a head doctor (as of this note I am not sure if I want him to pose as someone) but he will have the same appearance as an 89 year old man. Oh, and the stand can't teleport because that's too broken. (sorry for the wall of text, but the nerfs were desperately needed. I will make him strong, but not so strong he clears everything no sweat. Also sorry if I call it a stand by accident in the story, its just habit, but its just a quirk, not stand)
"Inko and Izuku Midoriya, we have finished examining the little one's quirk here. Come inside the room with us for a private chat about it."
Inko was curious about the doctor, usually it wasn't this secretive when she got her quirk examined. Next to her, Izuku looked excited, like he was on the edge of his seat waiting for the climax of a movie. His eyes had a glow that could only make her smile. Both green heads walked into the room, which was quite small and compact.
"Take a seat, both of you, this will be a weird one to explain." They followed suit. The quirk doctor looked exhausted. After all, he had been studying this quirk for over 5 hours straight. But, he had finally narrowed it down.
"Izuku here has a very strange and powerful quirk, nothing like we have seen before. Have either of you heard about sentient quirks before?"
Inko looked confused, but a bulb shined in Izuku's head as he nodded quickly. "Do I have one of those cool creatures that fights for me, like the number 56 hero "Lion Tamer" who can summon a lion that fights for him."
"Not exactly, just wait. Say, have either of you ever noticed a strange old man in a bowler hat and suit around you. Maybe in the background or even right next to you." Inko suddenly got a chill up her spine. She remembers seeing the eerie, old man seemingly randomly where they went. She filed a complaint about it, but they never found the man. Frankly, it scared her to this day.
"That man you may have saw was little Izuku's quirk." Izuku looked a bit downcast, and Inko looked a bit relieved it wasn't some stalker. "But, there is much more. We have limited information, but your son possesses a trigger that activates your quirk whenever someone tries to "pursue" you." He used air quotes with his hands, as pursuit described it very roughly.
"What do you mean mister. Does that old man do something?" Izuku had a ray of hope, maybe that his weird quirk could do something heroic like lift a building, or run really fast. His mind was racing just anticipating it. Inko was slowly getting more and more confused.
"Whenever someone tries to pursue you, a misfortune or calamity seems to bestow upon them. Basically, we discovered this when we tried to find you for the test by us repeatedly tripping over or running into things." He laughed a bit at this and rubbed his shin a bit at the memory. "So, we tested this by sending a photo of you to a hero that we told to imagine trying to find and fight. Naturally, this "calamity" of sorts attacked him. He is alright, but a bit bruised from it." The doctor looked at the mother and son for their reaction. He didn't know too much, but he assumed the boy could find more about this on his own.
Inko had her eyes wide open, still processing this. Izuku had a smile filled with happiness, but that quickly turned to one of horror. "But, mom, what about those bullies last year that disappeared. Did my quirk hurt them." The room went silent.
"What..." Inko stopped talking as she then grew that same expression of horror. Those kids were reported dead a few days later, from various incidents such as getting hit by a car, or falling off a cliff. She realized what this meant, how it all connected.
Her son killed those boys.
Tears began to well up in Inko's eyes as she looked at the horrified Izuku. His eyes were glazed over, his brain couldn't compute that he had killed them. It didn't feel right, it wasn't like he killed them directly.
But, in the end, Izuku had killed those boys.
Inko wrapped him in a big hug as they cried, the doctor seemingly getting what may have happened and having a sorrowful air around him. As the two cried from shock and sadness, you could see the man in that same bowler hat peering through the window, that mysterious mask over his face. No one seemed to notice this passive observer. He faded away and went back into Izuku.
After much consolidating and even the police coming to comfort that the family wouldn't be charged for any of this, they calmed down enough to hear the doctor out. "Look Ms. Midoriya, this unfortunate side effect of the quirk may cause quite a few issues in life. I recommend home schooling and living a quiet life. We wouldn't want to risk another incident like this. And I will also be reporting your quirk as classified, so only high ranking members of society will know about this. Hopefully, these actions can minimize casualties, but we can't be certain."
The doctor could still see the saddened look of Izuku at all these. His head was hung low and his eyes just gazed at the ground, almost lifeless. The boy must have been almost comatose from the turmoil today. "Izuku, I really wish you best in life, and I hope you can control your quirk eventually so maybe it won't cause harm. If you can, I could see you becoming an amazing hero one day."
And that was the spark needed. Those words reached Izuku and he felt a beacon of hope in the distance, a light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe if he could master it, he could become a hero like All Might, who could beat villains without even fighting. Little did he know, that his quirk would be his curse and blessing for all eternity.
Both Midoriyas walked out of the hospital after the examination, Izuku seeing the same bowler-hat man. Maybe he should approach his quirk to ask about it? The doctor called his quirk "Calamity," but he though the name sounded too menacing. Inko glanced at her son's quirk behind them, an eerie sensation. She looked down and saw Izuku walking towards it. She went to stop him, but tripped on a rock and stumbled a bit, slowing her down. She tried again, but a city bench knocked her to the ground, as she stood still, realizing his quirk was stopping her. Her ankle felt a bit bruised, but she was fine. She needed to calm herself so his quirk wouldn't stop her.
"You are my quirk, right Mr. Calamity?" The 4 year old Izuku looked curiously at him. A part of his soul felt connected with the entity, which brought a sense of ease that normally he wouldn't feel.
"You could say that, but I am much more. You aren't even the first person to be my user." The man in the bowler hat spoke, his voice was deep and raspy, a bit robotic. Izuku rose an eyebrow at this, "Not the first user?"
"There were other people before you, the most recent one died around 30 years ago." Once again, Izuku rose his eyebrows, shocked a quirk could carry on after someone died. But, the mystery kept raising more questions.
"So, then who are you?" "I have no name, but, my previous users all called me Wonder of U" Hmm, what an odd name. Izuku didn't see why he was called that, but continued on anyways.
"Well then, Wonder of U, why do you keep attacking people. It's bad to kill people." His quirk seemed to think for a moment. Not in the sense that he was trying to figure out an answer, but that he was trying to phrase it.
"It is simply my nature as Calamity. It is the one rule I abide by, and I cannot bend that rule. It is an absolute of this world, just like how we all eventually will die." Izuku felt a hand on his shoulder from Inko, who managed to calm down enough to approach Izuku. She looked at Wonder of U with a bit of hesitancy, but cleared her throat a bit.
"Why did you chose to be in my son? Why him?" "Because it is what he most desired. He was scared of being chased or pursued, so I chose him. Thus, he became a new user."
Inko thought that answer didn't really solve anything, but she still felt afraid around the man. Or should she say quirk. Just then, Wonder of U disappeared back into Izuku's body. Both of the Midoriya's had more questions, but it seemed that Wonder of U didn't want to answer them anymore.
"Mom, why is he called Wonder of U, I've never heard of that name before?" Inko looked down at the curious face of Izuku. "Well, back when I was a child, there was a man called Elvis Presley who wrote a song called Wonder of You. I would assume its because of that, but maybe I am wrong."
"Can we listen to that song in the car ride home?" Izuku was excited to hear this song, maybe it was all mysterious like his quirk? Maybe it could give answers? "Sure honey, we can"
And so, they both listened in the car to Wonder of You, a song very fitting of the quirk, but ironic at the same time. It was a peaceful and thankful song about perseverance and remembrance, which shared a name with a quirk about chaos and calamity. Inko thought the old user of this must have been naming it ironically, as there wasn't a way he could have gotten this name from what he thought the quirk was actually like.
Once Izuku arrived home, he felt strangely uplifted from the guilt. It wasn't that he wasn't sorry for the death of the bullies, but he felt that the sorrow wasn't going to do anything. His mind at the time couldn't comprehend it, but he wanted a sense of justice and atonement for his actions. At the time, he wanted to help people so that he could make up for those who died.
From that night onward, things changed in life. Izuku first began homeschooling, which Inko struggled to teach quite a lot. Thankfully, her husband overseas provided enough money, knowing she was in a tough spot. But, Izuku was quite the curious child, and didn't need coaxing to learn. This made him progress at a fast rate, as he could control the pace he learned at. Overall, he was smarter than most kids his age.
Another change was that Izuku was allowed outside at certain times, but not as free as he would want. His mother didn't want him to grow up and be too isolated, so she let him go to the playground with other kids, after making sure that he got along with them. Of course, maybe in a game of tag, the kids would occasionally trip and fall, maybe scraping a knee, but it seems that Wonder of U didn't cause serious calamities when the pursuit wasn't in something negative or threatening. In fact, it was almost amusing to watch as Izuku was the king of Tag. No one could ever tag him back.
From the negatives, a few positives emerged. One, Inko knew that Izuku was completely safe. She knew that if he wandered onto the streets, she didn't need to worry about him getting attacked or mugged by a villain. Wonder of U was like an overprotective bodyguard that worked 24/7. Though she did feel a bit guilty that he had such a dangerous quirk.
Speaking of Wonder of U (which she always seemed to be thinking about in these recent years), her and Izuku got a little more info out of the old man.
Flashback to 5 years ago (when Izuku was 10)...
"Look, Wonder of U, could you please tell me about the other guy that had you. It kinda irks me that I know nothing about you and that you refused to tell me." Izuku at 10 was quite a bit taller with a more lean build. He could pass as a 13 year old if he wanted to. He was dressed in a black hoodie with grey sweatpants on. Across from him, Wonder of U stood there, his mask off. He had a contemplative look.
"I will tell you a bit about him, and how he died." Izuku actually was caught off guard. Finally, he was going to break the news to him. Izuku sat down eagerly and listened intently, placing his hands on his lap and resting his head on them. "His name was Toru."
"Toru was a rock human, a sub-species of humans that are part rock. Toru spent most of his early years in a wasp nest, until he was 17. Then, he dated a girl called Yasuho, who he loved deeply, and broke up with later. After awhile, he ran into the man who would defeat him, a man called Josuke. After Toru died, I wandered for a bit and ended up picking you as my user. Though, Toru was a stronger user than you, my calamities being more potent"
Izuku was more curious, seeing as he obviously left quite a few parts out. Then again, Wonder of U wasn't much to talk, in fact, sometimes he was hard to hold a conversation with. Though it could be because of how old he is (which is very old). Izuku found old people were hard to talk with sometimes. And Izuku could only guess at the horrors that would be stronger calamities.
"Was Toru a hero?" Wonder of U looked at Izuku, hinting an answer.
"In his age, there were no heroes, and he wouldn't be one of them. His goals revolved money and acknowledgement, that he used force to achieve." It was a neutral answer, but there was obviously more wrong than right in the man. Izuku got the gist of it.
"What about before Toru, who else was there?"
"There were quite a few people before him, but the one just before him was a girl. But, unfortunately, she died when a beam of light came out of a passing train and killed her. My powers weren't able to reflect it due to her not being the intended target." An image in Wonder of U's mind came up when the young girl looked out her window to see a train in the distance. It should have had the president on it. She could also see small pillars of light that shot from the train to the sky and two men on horses riding next to the train. That's when a beam of light came from the pillars of light and killed her.
"Do you think I could become a hero, even though you are with me?" A simple yet complicated question.
"Well, it is possible. But I couldn't tell you," Wonder of U disappeared back into Izuku. Meanwhile, he just laid back and put his hands around the back of his head, staring at the ceiling. These vague answers didn't help much, but he wasn't really looking for a definitive answer. Because he knew his quirk didn't often give those types of answers.
"What am I going to do now? Well, universe, maybe grant me this one. Let me win a few times, alright?"
Flashback end...
"Tomorrows a big day. Or the big day. Whatever, it doesn't matter that much. Well it does, but I shouldn't worry now." Even talking to himself, Izuku felt himself slipping up words. Man, he had no experience talking. He couldn't imagine being those people in movies that could sweet talk someone, likely a girl, into agreeing with them. Crazy stuff.
"Well, the entrance exam should be wild. If it's combat, hopefully it's nothing alive or so. Maybe one of those training robots I saw on the news awhile back. You know, so I don't hurt anyone too bad." The mention to fighting brought him back to the bullies over 11 years ago. It was his reason for being a hero after all, a sense of atonement for the unfortunate deaths that he did cause and might cause in the future.
"Well, Wonder of U be ready tomorrow, so that we can crush that test." Izuku said this to the air, knowing Wonder of U could hear him somewhere inside. It brought a small smile to him, knowing someone was always there for him. He drifted to sleep.
