Sam looked at his watch and cursed underneath his breath as he climbed the steps, ringing the doorbell twice before knocking. He was late and now he was unintentionally giving her another reason to go off on him. She was doing that a lot lately. Sure, they weren't on the best terms in their relationship…hell could he even call it that since they broke up? As the door opened, he saw the deepen frown on her face and he sighed as he spoke, "Traffic, I swear."

Mercedes was in mid conversation with her friends when she heard the doorbell. She was having her weekly girls night when her ex finally decided to show up. Excusing herself, she picked her glass and headed to the door. Hearing his excuse when she opened the door, she rolled her eyes as she moved to the side to let him in, closing the door behind her. She watched him closely as he turned to face her again, prompting her to call out up the stairs, "Sky, Daddy's finally here."

"I'm coming." Sam heard the sweet voice say from upstairs, a smile twitching on his lips before his eyes met back with the woman in front of him, "How are you?"

"Stop with the pleasantries."

Sam face twitched up in confusion before he let out a frustrated laugh, "I can't ask you how you're doing now?"

Mercedes rolled her eyes once more, "Not when you don't truly care."

"Wow…okay."

"Yeah, okay."

"You've been at my throat more than usual for weeks now. What's the real reason you're mad?" He asked as he stared down at her, watching as she looked up, "Because honestly, you have no reason to be…not anymore."

"Wow. So crazy how easily men can act like their not in the wrong." Mercedes let out a humorless chuckle as she sipped from her glass, eyes never leaving his before she spoke, "I'm not mad, Sam. At all. Disappointment still? Yes."

"Look, I don't know what I can do anymore. You…me…the problem. I can't fix it if you're not willing to talk it out."

"There's nothing to talk out nor fix. How many times do I have to tell you that?" She stated seriously as she stared at him and shook her head, "Our focus just needs to be on Skylar and that's it. The only thing I need for you to do is be consistent with your daughter."

"What the hell are you even talking about, Mercedes? Like seriously? I'm late a couple of times, none in which are preventable, and that makes me an inconsistent father?"

"You're putting words in my mouth, I didn't say that."

"Well, you aren't saying too much of anything these days and is just finding petty shit to be pissed off at me for."

"Just…do better. That's what I need you to do."

"I made hella mistakes and I've owned up to them. I'm far from perfect but I'm a damn good Dad. Don't ever try to insinuate that I'm not." Sam scoffed as his eyes scanned hers, taking a step back when he heard footsteps coming down quickly. He smiled when he saw the blur of curls dashing pass them towards the other room, his eyes settling back in on the woman in front of him, "Just know she's the one it's effecting the most."

Mercedes looked away from him and took a deep breath. She hated how this is who they'd become. She couldn't help her unresolved anger at him. Their relationship ended on a sour note but she had to suck it up because they did have a kid together, and she'd be damned if she solicited her to the bitterness that she had felt towards him. She came out of her thoughts when she saw the little girl come back in, dropping her bags as she went straight to him for a hug.

"My sweet girl." Sam bent down and gave her a hug before pulling back and smiling, "You ready, Peanut Butter?"

"Go time, Jelly." Sky countered as she watched her father stand back to his normal height and grab her bags, prompting her to go over and give her mother a hug, "See you later, I love you."

"I love you too, my love." Mercedes pressed a kiss to the side of her head before she pulled back, moving the little girl's hair behind her ear, "Have fun with Daddy okay? Make sure he stays out of trouble."

Sky chuckled as she nodded her head, giving her one last hug before putting her book bag on.

Mercedes watched as they headed for door, following behind them as she stood in the threshold. She watched as the little girl trotted down the steps before heading to her Daddy's truck.

Before Sam left off the porch, he turned and looked at her, eyes serious as he spoke, "I'm tired of fighting. I can't make up for what I did, and I can't apologize enough but I truly am sorry for how much I hurt you."

Mercedes just stared at him, watching as he didn't wait for a response from her, his mood switching as he went to their daughter and helping her into his pickup truck. She sighed as she stepped back into the house, closing the door behind her. When she turned around, she came face to face with her friends, who she had abandoned earlier, staring at her, "What?"

"Maybe it's time for you to forgive him."

"I agree. It's in the past, Mercedes. Something that happened a year ago."

"A year ago today actually." She reminded them, watching as they looked at each other then back at her.

"Let it go."

"He got drunk, had sex with someone else then lied to my face about it but I should let it go?" Mercedes scrunched her face up at her friends, "I can't believe y'all."

"We're not saying you have to forget but you damn sure need to forgive because harboring hatred will and is eating away at you. And another thing, y'all were broken up." The girl remarked as she stared at her, "Skye will start to notice and that's something that doesn't need to happen."

"Yeah, she's already dealing with the fact that her parents aren't together anymore. Do you really want it to get out one day by mistake on the reason why? She'll never forgive him and I know you don't want that."

Mercedes leaned over and opened the door back up, "It's time for you both to leave."

"We love you Mercedes, don't think we don't." The woman responded as she grabbed her purse from the rack and sighed as she walked passed her, the other one following in suit.

Mercedes shook her head, closing and locking the door for the final time tonight. She headed up the stairs and decided to end the night in her bed, thoughts swarming around until she fell asleep.
