Chapter Seven:
The white dragon village was nothing like Shura expected.
She found it odd how all of the villagers looked the same as they went about their activities. She barely paid attention to the elder man as he showed them around. Shura was too busy looking for Yona and Yun. She didn't think the villagers would cause them any harm but when it came to others people always found a way to surprise her.
"What the hell! WHY ARE YOU TWO GETTING TREATED LIKE TOURISTS!" Yun's screech had Shura whipping her head around to stare at her sister and the blonde in a cage with their hands and feet bound. Unwanted memories surfaced and she felt her body coil with rage.
"Oh. Hey guys." Hak said, waving.
Shura turned her gaze to the elder beside them. He began to shake at the amount of fury that was in the young girl's gaze. "Release them. Now." Shura's voice did not sound like her own as the young guard rushed to let Yun and Yona go. It sounded like the growl of a beast. Of unadulterated, untamed rage.
"Shura!" Yona collided with her sister, wrapping her arms around her tightly as she hugged her. Shura smiled, her rage simmering out like a dampened fire.
"Shh, it is alright." She gently stroked Yona's hair, smiling.
Once Yun had gotten unbound, the elder led them towards the back of the village to a large, beautiful tree just in front of the mountain's cliff. "Please," he said, bowing, "forgive me for the harsh treatment earlier. This village is where the first White Dragon Warrior retired after his role in the mythical era was completed. Over the years we have had to fight off many who were hungry for the power of the White dragon. It has made us quite wary of any outsiders we come across."
Hak muttered and suddenly Shura was hoisted into his arms as villagers crowded around her, reaching for her hair as their eyes sparkled. "I understand, however is this…ordinary?" He said, clutching her tightly.
Shura blushed slightly at how close they were and feeling uncomfortable as the villagers showered her with compliments.
"So pretty!"
"Crimson hair!"
"Oh wow its so beautiful!"
Shura gasped softly and looked up at him with a small smile. "Hak she just called my hair beautiful!"
"I know their hair color is rare but is that really any reason for everyone to freak out like this?" Yun asked as Hak set her down next to Yona.
"Crimson hair holds quite the significance for us. After all, the first White dragon served a master whose hair burned like fire."
Shura touched her hair fondly and sighed. "That is quite funny. When I was young, I used to wish it was a different color."
"You should feel honored to have that blessed color!" The elder walked closer to them, smiling. "When we found you, you told us that it was the oracle who sent you to find us. You could be the one." Shura was surprised at how serious his tone became and how the villagers seemed to become eerily quiet. "The ancient king's heir whom we have been praying to come for thousands of years." He paused. "Or…maybe not."
Shura blanched as Yun clutched at his bag and began to get nervous. "Since we know where the village is, what's gonna happen if she's not the one?"
The elder dodged the question. "If you don't mind me asking, why is the dragon warrior so special? By the looks of everyone you all are descendants of the original."
He sighed. "Yes we are, but there is only one child every generation to be born with the White dragon's power. That child in each generation is born with the Dragon's powerful might sealed within his right hand."
Shura's eyes went wide as the other villagers began to disperse and go back to their activities while buzzing about the new people. With explanations done and the chance to calm down finally came, Shura sighed and pressed a hand to the left side of her face. She felt so overwhelmed and tired from the villagers that she began to sway and leaned back against Hak.
Their voices seemed muffled as she was guided over to the tree and the four of them sat down. Through the exhausted fog that clouded her mind, she began to think about the village and the warrior. If she were honest with herself, she was feeling incredibly guilty. Shura's quest was only a personal vengeance for the sake of her sister. She felt her request was unreasonable, to be asking this village for their treasure.
"Why the long face?" Hak asked.
"I feel guilty asking them this. They have protected the White Dragon Warrior for years, it is as though he is their greatest treasure and yet I am asking them to let me use him for nothing more than a personal matter. They have been waiting many years for their supposed king's return. It simply feels wrong."
"Are you giving up?"
Shura thought about it before smirking and leaning in close to Hak, stealing his dagger as she stood. "Absolutely not. We have come all this way. He will come with us!" She said with more confidence than she felt. A slight blush stained Haks cheeks as his gaze moved behind her.
The wind blew as she turned, tossing her hood down. A violet gaze met one of ocean blue and the beautiful boy in front of her froze. His eyes went wide and he clutched his right hand, his face twisting in pain. A simple moment that seemed to take forever passed as he screamed, falling backwards.
Shura stared down at his hand in surprise. It had burn marks all over it and was smoking with heat as if he had stuck his hand in a raging fire. She stood frozen as Yun and the other villagers rushed to care for him. She had felt an instant connection to this boy, something had shifted inside her as if recognizing her kind.
He had to be the White Dragon Warrior.
The boy was only out for a few minutes and when he awoke he was sweating and acted as though he was still in pain. He sat up and simply stared at her. "You are the White dragon then." Shura said.
"I am. When I first saw you my dragon's blood cried out, recognizing its master. I have been waiting for you….my master." He bent over his knees and bowed to her.
"Mas…ter?" She muttered, turning to look out at the other villagers. All of them assumed the same position as the beautiful boy, murmuring amongst themselves.
"Oh what a joyous day!" The elder began sobbing as he shouted and the White Dragon gawked at her with a sparkly expression. "The king we have long awaited has finally returned and he's a little girl!"
"Why do they keep referring to Shura as a guy?"
"Probably," Yun piped up, looking at Hak like he was stupid, "because of the legend. The king had crimson hair like she does."
"My ancient master," The white dragon spoke, shocking her, "please tell me your name."
"It's Shura."
"Master…Shura.."
He really is the Dragon Warrior. With his pale skin and shimmering white hair, it is very easy to tell he is not like the others. She smiled at him and leaned down. "You really are a very beautiful boy."
He blushed and jerked back in surprise. "N-no! Please you are the one who is truly beautiful, my master!"
Shura blushed lightly before sighing softly and looked down at him guiltily. "I am not your master, I am nothing more than a fugitive."
"You could have phrased that a little better!" Yona yelled at her.
"I am on a journey to reunite the four dragons of legend and," she smiled softly at him once more, "have come to ask for your help first. Will you join me?"
He stared at her and for a moment Shura was afraid that he would say no but then he smiled and took her hand. "I am honored. No matter who or what you are, I will always serve you. You are my master. I will join you on your quest, for my blood compels me too."
When that pretty boy stumbled away Hak followed after him all the way back to his mansion and knocked on the door as he huddled on the floor. "Yo."
"What do you want? You can't just come barging into my castle without permission!" He snipped, instantly irking Hak.
"I came to see if you had any useful stuff that could help us out but, ya don't." Hak said, lifting up and inspecting a vase. The White dragon scoffed at him and shoved a large sack of coins in his face. "Whoa! You're a really generous white dragon!"
"Consider this a parting gift."
Hak paused and looked up at him from the money, hoping he'd misheard. "Huh?"
"Thank you for your service but you are no longer needed. I will be protecting the princess now, so you may go."
It took him a moment to register what he had said but once he did, Hak was instantly pissed off.
The two of them stomped back towards the others, the air seemingly rumbling around them from the animosity between the two as they did. "What's happened?" Yona asked as she and Shura trotted up to them.
"Princess." Hak looked down at Shura. "We need to find another White dragon, this one's broken."
"How do you not understand that you aren't wanted nor needed!"
He scowled at him. "There's no way a pampered jerk like you is gonna take my job! Show some respect!"
"It's destiny! How can you employ such an idiotic worm as your bodyguard!?"
"How are you two already fighting?" Yun asked incredulously.
"He tried to fire me. Even bribed me to leave."
"Well that explains the bulge."
He shrugged nonchalantly and turned his face away. "I've gained some weight, so what?"
"It's my sacred duty! You aren't a dragon so leave!"
Before he realized it, he looked down in shock as Shura grabbed ahold of his arm and shouted at the idiot. "No! He has protected me and Yona since we were forced from the castle. He brought Yona back to me! He is important so I demand that he stay by my side!"
His heart felt like it was about to burst and he began to laugh uncontrollably and his face flamed red. "Hahaha you hear that white dragon? I'm important!"
Yona reached into his robes and grabbed the sack of money, handing it back as Shura sighed. "With how dangerous it is becoming, Hak is going to end up dead trying to protect the both of us on his own. So, I want you to look after Hak and Yona for me."
He watched the gears turn in the idiot's head before he got a huge smile on his face and smacked his fist into his hand. "Oh! I get it! You want me to protect him because he cannot protect himself! Do not worry, I will look after the both of you and this vulnerable beast!"
Hak smashed his head into his with a growl. "You think I need some dainty white snake to look after me!? I don't think so!"
The idiot gasped and snarled back. "White snake!? How dare you call me such a name! I am a noble White Dragon!"
Yun muttered, exasperated. "Let's leave them both."
When night fell Shura watched everyone in wonder.
The villagers chatted happily with everyone and there was so much different, delicious food set in front of them that she felt bad asking the others what they were. The White Dragon chattered happily with Yun, Yona, and her as they ate but Shura noticed Yona taking a particular interest in him. She smiled softly, feeling a little more at ease that she now had more protection for her.
Turning away from watching the two of them talk, Shura watched as some of the women gathered and moved around the large fire in the center of the gathering. She hadn't noticed but she unconsciously leaned into Hak as he ate. "What are they doing?"
She heard the smile in his voice when he spoke. "They're dancing. It's probably a traditional celebratory thing."
"Dancing…." She whispered, staring. The strange movements seemed to flow together like a river and was intune with the music that played. The women seemed so beautiful and like they were having so much fun as they did. I…would like to try this dancing sometime… she thought.
The night passed by in a blur and when she got to finally lay down, she was grateful. Shura couldn't remember the last time she had ever gotten such a peaceful rest. Back at the castle or even in Fuga. She had slept so deeply that she was shocked when Yona woke her that morning. Shura had never slept through the night before.
Because of that she was loath to leave but Shura knew that they had no choice. They needed to find the other warriors so Yona could get her life back and if Shura were to be honest, so she could make Su-Won pay for what he'd done to her sister.
After packing and heading to the village entrance, she stood with Hak as the White dragon said his goodbyes to his people. Shura felt her heart ache and tears pool at the corner of her eyes as they said their goodbyes. When the elderly woman who had taken care of him came to say her goodbyes to him as well, it had Shura crying. She felt so guilty pulling him away from those he loved and the place filled with so much care for him. It felt incredibly selfish and wrong.
A finger on her cheek jerked her from her loathing as the White dragon finished his goodbye. She looked up in surprise at Hak. It was his fingers that were gently wiping the tears away from his face. He seemed to realize what he was doing and he jerked back, muttering an apology as he blushed. She felt her face grow hotter.
"Let's go." They traveled back into the forest before Yun had them stopping to pull out his map. "So where do we go from here?"
"Did Ik-su tell you where the other villages would be, Yun?" Shura asked, looking at his map and trying to understand it.
Yun sighed and shook his head. "Not a word. We're pretty much on our own from here on out."
Yona groaned softly and the White dragon leaned down next to Shura, smiling. "You wish to find the other dragon warriors, yes?" She looked at him and nodded. "Well you are in luck. I can sense where the others are, even from here. I can't pinpoint exactly where they are but I can always feel them. The four of us are brothers, and therefore are connected."
"That's wonderful! It'll be so handy!" Yona shouted.
"H-Handy?" He stuttered and Shura had to giggle at his expression.
As they started back down the mountain she fell instep beside him. "Tell me, what is your name?"
He turned to look at her, seemingly surprised she asked. "My name?"
She nodded. "Yes. You must have a name you were born with. Everyone in the village simply calls you White Dragon but I would like to know your real name."
The White dragon seemed lost in thought for a moment before his face morphed into a smile and he looked at her with a soft gaze. "Gija."
Shura returned his smile and gently clasped his hand. "Hello Gija."
