And here we are on the final chapter. Thank you all for coming on this journey with me.
To quote The Doctor, Geronimo!
Gallifrey 22.3: Even if those events are Timelocked, it still affects the universe. Because now that The Doctor didn't wipe everything fighting in the Time War out, they're still around to go cause chaos and kill people, namely the things that were almost brought through the rift. And again, the Time Lords are now still out there and just as bad as the Daleks, if not worse. If they ever get out, they would be a threat The Doctor would have to deal with, which is a real possibility since The Doctor intended to go looking for Gallifrey.
In the afternoon air, Jack stood outside a house, nervously tapping his foot, remembering his conversation with Jane.
"So I guess we're going home now," Mickey noted as Jane led the past viewers into the console room.
"Not yet," Jane said, confusing them. "We have one stop to make first."
The past viewers looked around in confusion as Jane walked up to the console, putting in a course before pulling the lever. The TARDIS gave a familiar jolt as it let out its familiar sound before stopping. Jane walked over to the doors, gesturing Jack over. Shrugging at the others, Jack followed Jane over to the door, looking at her curiously.
Silently, Jane opened the door and walked out. Jack followed her and froze as he realized where they were, staring at his daughter's old house.
"Why'd you bring me here? I don't want to be here," Jack said turning away.
"To give you one last memory of them," Jane said and Jack stilled. "This is a few months before the 456 incident. You remember that dinner you never made it to?"
Jack nodded, remembering it well. He'd made plans to meet Alice and Steven for dinner but a case had come up, he'd had to cancel. Strangely, Alice had never brought it up.
"She'll think you just changed your mind, she won't think anything of it. Jack, I can't give you back what you lost, but I can give you one last happy memory, one last night with them. There's no wrong answer, but if I had one last moment with my Dad, I'd take it. But it's your choice Jack," Jane told him.
After a long moment, Jack turned around, facing the house with a mix of emotions, chief among them longing and guilt.
Now, with the TARDIS long gone, Jack stood outside the house before sighing, walking up to the front door and ringing the doorbell. After a long moment, the door opened and Jack tried to keep the guilt off his face as Alice stood there, looking at him in surprise.
"Dad," she said in surprise. "I thought you had a case."
"False alarm. Hope it's not too late to drop by," Jack said, attempting to sounds normal.
"No, it's fine. I made extra anyway," Alice said as she stepped aside to let him.
Jack nodded absently as he stepped inside, looking around wistfully. It had been years since he'd stepped foot in this house, not since the day he'd come to Alice when the children had started pointing to the sky and speaking. It felt like a lifetime ago.
Because it was, Jack thought darkly. Steven's life.
As if summoned by Jack's thoughts, the boy came running down the stairs and over to Jack.
"Uncle Jack!" Steven said happily as he rushed towards Jack.
Putting aside his dark thoughts, Jack knelt down and picked Steven up as the two exchanged a hug. It felt exactly like the last time they'd visited, except it wasn't. Jack knew this was probably the last hug they'd ever share, at least from his perspective.
"Hey soldier. How's it going?" Jack asked as he smiled, locking his own emotions away.
"Great, my friend Billy showed me this really cool park! And I got a new ship in my room," Steven said he began to tell Jack all about what he'd been doing recently.
TARDIS
In her office, Jane was looking around for something when someone walked in through the door.
"Hi," Martha said.
"Hi," Jane echoed, watching silently as Martha looked around the office.
Martha paused as she saw the photo of herself with Ten. It had been one of their last trips before running into Jack. Martha was honestly surprised he kept it.
"Was there something you wanted Martha?" Jane asked, breaking Martha out of her thoughts.
"Yeah. I wanted to thank you for what you did for Jack. I know you didn't have to," Martha said.
"I've known Jack for years, I know how much what happened eats at him. If I can give him a small measure of peace, that's what I'll do," Jane said as she sat down at the desk, looking more tired that Martha thought she had any right to be.
"Are you…looking for something?" Martha asked and Jane nodded before pulling open a drawer.
"Yeah. And It looks like I found it," Jane said as he reached inside, pulling out a small glass bottle of pink liquid.
"What is that?" Martha asked curiously and a sad smile flashed across Jane's face.
"Dad's last gift to Amy and Rory."
Alice's house
If Jack had ever imagined a perfect evening, this would have been it, he decided as he sat by Steven's bed, watching his grandson sleep.
Dinner had gone well, Steven had filled most of the chatter by catching up Jack on what he'd been up to since they had seen each other last. After dinner, Steven had all but dragged Jack to his room, showing him his new toys before Jack had volunteered to read Steven one of his new books before bed. Steven had fallen asleep before the end.
Jack stared silently at Steven's sleeping form, memorizing his face, not the horrible image of Steven's bloodied face that had been left after Jack and the others had done what they had to.
"I'm sorry," Jack said his voice no louder than a whisper. "I wish they had been another way. If there had, I would have taken it. But I couldn't let all those children suffer, not even for you. It doesn't make it right but…I'm sorry. For all of it."
Steven didn't respond, still asleep. Jack wiped his eyes, knowing he couldn't explain that to Alice. After taking a few moments to compose himself, Jack stood up and exited the room, glancing at Steven's sleeping form one more time before closing the door softly so as not to wake him.
Walking down the steps, Jack found Alice in the kitchen, still cleaning up, although he wondered ow much of it was just her needing to do something rather than it needing to be cleaned.
"Steven asleep?" Alice asked without looking at him.
"Out like a light," Jack confirmed. "Thank you for tonight. I'm gonna head out."
Alice merely nodded and Jack turned to leave but pausing, realizing this would be the last time he would ever speak to his daughter.
"Alice," Jack said, turning back to her and Alice lifted her head. "I'm…I know I'm not the perfect father, and that it hasn't been easy, keeping my secret. But I do love you, and I love Steven. I hope you know that."
"I do know that Dad," Alice said, bewildered by his behavior. "Is everything alright?"
"Everything's fine," Jack lied, doing his best to keep his face normal. "I'll see you…I'll see you."
Jack turned and walked towards the door as Alice stared at his retreating figure in bewilderment. Jack walked out the door, closing the door behind him before walking off the front porch. Jack turned back, staring at the house for a few moments longer before walking away, pulling out his phone.
The TARDIS
Not long after
"So how was your visit?" Martha asked Jack gently after they had picked him up and they all stood in the console room.
"It was fine," Jack said evasively.
Martha stared at Jack, knowing that was probably the best he was going to give her. But she wasn't going to push; this visit had been for him. It was really none of her business.
"Thank you," Jack said as he turned to Jane, who nodded.
"Least I could do. You're going back to save my Dad, I could give you one last happy evening with your family," Jane said and there was a pause.
"So, what now?" Mickey inquired.
"Now, I have a few things for you. First, Jack," Jane called out before tossing something to him.
Jack caught and looked own, surprised to see it was his old Vortex Manipulator.
"You swiped it from the Black Archive just before you met up with Dad again. It has a few limited uses on both Time Travel and teleportation, so use it wisely. After it's done, destroy it, don't want another paradox," Jane told him and Jack nodded.
"Have a feeling I'll need this," Jack noted before putting it back on his wrist.
""Goes without saying Immortal Man," Donna pointed out.
"Before I drop you off, one more thing," Jane said, pulling out the bottle of pink liquid.
"You said that was The Doctor's last gift to Amy and Rory," Martha remembered and Jane nodded.
"The reason there was such a large gap between his visits during the Slow Invasion was because he was working on this," Jane said as she glanced down at it. "Took him going to several different medical experts in the universe, but he finally found a way to give them what they wanted."
"Which was what?" Wilf asked as they looked at Jane in confusion.
"A way to undo the damage Kovarian had done to Amy. A few doses of this each night for a week would be enough for Amy to be able to conceive and carry a child," Jane revealed, to their shock. "I found it in his notes in his journals, he'd found a way but he just hadn't been able to make it before…"
"Yeah," Martha said softly as Jane walked over, handing it to Martha.
"Make sure he gets it," Jane said as Martha took it.
"I will," Martha promised with a nod.
"I'm counting on all of you. Don't let me down," Jane said as she looked around at all of them.
"We won't," Donna promised and Jane smiled tightly.
"I'll hold you to that," Jane said.
No more words were spoken as Jane walked over to the console. She put in the course before flipping a lever. The TARDIS jolted before landing. The group walked over to the doors and opened them, seeing the back alley of the pub Jane had taken from days earlier.
"So this is right after we left?" Wilf asked curiously.
"You've been gone ten minutes," Jane confirmed.
"What happens to you after you leave?" Mickey asked as he looked at Jane curiously.
"Not sure. I might go back to the timeline I came from, or I might blink out of existence. I really don't know. But in any case, it's worth it to save Dad and the universe," Jane said with a shrug. "Good luck."
Jane then closed the door before any of them could say anything. Seconds later, the TARDIS dematerialized with a 'Vwoorp'. For a long moment, the group merely stared at the spot where the TARDIS had vanished.
"Well, I guess we should get started," Jack noted.
And that's the end.
Nothing anyone can say will ever convince me The Doctor wasn't trying to find a way to let Amy and Rory have children of their own.
Before anyone asks, yes, I do plan to write a sequel. Not sure when that will be, but I do plan for it.
Until next time.
