(Part 4)
The Enterprise had a much better time of it... Going thru 'Angels Gate'... than the Thresher.
Wisely, the ship's shields were turned on and boosted to maximum levels... 'Borderline' unsafe.
This made all the difference, for Pike's ship did not suffer the problems that Thresher encountered.
Spock soon picked up the trail of USS Thresher at his console. A few light-years ahead, he reported.
"Good work Mr. Spock..." Pike then said, after receiving this bit of much welcome news!
Pike looked at his female helmsman: "Punch it, please! Get to the Thresher... And, fast!"
There once was a U.S. Navy ship long ago... On Terra (Earth), also named 'Thresher'. It was
an undersea vessel: a submarine. Lost in an unexpected tragedy. For the deep ocean could be
as dangerous as deep space. Pike just wanted to be sure this Thresher did not suffer any bad 'Fate'.
###
(Onboard the Romulan vessel...)
They now sighted the lavender star... Like some brilliant jewel laid upon the black velvety carpet of space.
The female helmsman called to the captain, resting in his quarters. The report from the two Orion scientists
had gone on for several hours. He was in a light sleep, when the bridge called down: "Captain. We're nearly there!"
He got up with a smile... Yes, Romulans do smile on occasions such as this: The Promise of a New World... of Freedom.
No more pursuit of endless wars. The chance of living a productive and peaceful Life. Something not possible on Romulus.
###
"What... the Enterprise?" said a surprised Captain Jenkins on the USS Thresher. He was glad some help was coming for his
ship had suffered the loss of nearly every Di-Lithium Crystal. The unexpected effect of crossing thru Angels Gate. Damn!
He was no greenhorn, but in hindsight he should have ordered all the shields to go to maximum power. They were on at
minimum levels when entering the portal of Angels Gate. He'd been concerned of a possible interaction with the wormhole.
Like a feedback loop that is a rare but possible phenomenon... Of energy relationships. But he'd slept thru a Physics lecture
way back at Starfleet Academy, he now remembered. Damn, yet again. He got drunk at a wild dorm party the night before!
But at least Thresher was all intact... He'd heard about Captain Pike from his father - the Admiral. Pike graduated before him.
###
The Romulan ultra-fast ship turned on its cloaking shield, as it approached the Planet of Legend: 'Ubikaya'. Said to make
visitors nearly immortal just by setting foot upon its surface. It also was rumored to be a paradise as well... And peaceful.
But just in case, the Romulan leader thought it prudent to stay hidden... Until an exploratory visit by a select few of his crew.
(To be continued...)
