Metaverse. Madarame's Palace.

After School.

— All right! It's time to execute our plan! — Ren said with a confident smirk plastered over his face.

— That's the spirit! — Miles said. — I'm going to wait in the real world for you all. If anything happens… I'm afraid I will be unable to help you guys.

— I see. Everyone, be ready for anything. We have a heart to steal, and I want everyone to come back alive and well. No exceptions.

— You heard Joker guys. We have to steal that Treasure and come back alive. I'd expect you all to come back in one piece! — Morgana said with a huge grin.

— Well, I'm going now. Good luck, Phantom Thieves.

Miles left the Metaverse going back to the real world and Ren looked at his team with a serious look.

— Everyone remembers the plan, right? — Ren asked and everyone nodded in agreement. — Okay. Let's do this.

Opening a path towards the safe rooms, Ren went with the others towards the safe route they established over the last few days. After reaching their destination, they went towards their objective.

— The atmosphere here seems significantly different… — Yusuke commented.

— Yeah! I mean, we basically declared war on him by sendin' that card. — Ryuji said.

— But there's nothing to fear! We've secured a route, and we're ready to go. We'll take the Treasure in style!

— But we need to be careful. He'll protect his Treasure with his all. We need our best to retrieve our prize carefully and get out of there with all the costs. — Ren said. — We reached our destination.

The thieves saw Shadow Madarame, looking at the entrance with defiant eyes. Several Shadows were protecting the place, ready to fight and die for Madarame.

— It seems there are vermin sniffing around here… But we'll have to endure it until the exhibit ends… Damn you Yusuke and Amamiya… You've ruined my plans but I'll not let this slide. You shall pay for the atrocity you've made towards my person… *chuckle* Those impertinent whelps… I'll make them regret ever angering me…

— He seems angry. — Morgana said.

— Yeah, I am not surprised to see that. — Ren replied. — First, let's go to the hook controls. We'll split our team there, got it?

They nodded and rushed towards the server's room. Once they reached the room, Ren went in with the others and went to the crane controls.

— It's finally time… — Ryuji said, looking at the hook lever.

— There will be no turning back once we begin the operation. — Yusuke said, keeping his cool.

— And if worst comes to worst, we might have to fight… — Ann said with dismay.

— That's right. Are you ready, Joker? — Morgana asked.

Ren stood quiet for a brief moment before answering:

— Yes. Yes, I am.

— Something's wrong? — Ann asked.

— I'm wondering about the Treasure…

— So…?

— I think it's a trap.

— Well, there's only one way to find out! — Ryuji said carefree. Ren gave his defiant smirk.

— Well, you guys've heard Skull! Mona, I'm ready. Ready as I'll ever be.

— All right! Let's go.

— Mona, Fox, you stay here with me and control the crane! Skull, Panther, I trust you two with the task of turning off the power! We can't fail here. — Ren said splitting the teams.

— You guys heard Joker! Everyone take your positions.

Ryuji and Ann rushed back to the entrance and went to the control room on the ground floor. Reaching the room, they saw a Shadow protecting the place.

— There's an enemy inside, just as expected… — Ann said in dismay as she drew her submachine gun.

— I mean, we've done a ton here. It ain't surprisin'. — Ryuji said, picking up his shotgun. — Anyway, I'm gonna try and draw it out, so I'll leave the switch to you guys.

— No. We're doing this together.

— No, that'll draw their attention. Don't worry, I'll be fine.

— Will you be okay? What if it catches up to you? — Ann asked worriedly.

— Heh, don't underestimate an ex-runner. I'm definitely gonna shake them off! — Ryuji said with a confident giant grin on his face. Now go. I'll take care of it.

Ann nodded hesitantly as she hid behind the potted plant. Ryuji checked for her, seeing her disappear from his field of vision. He waited for an entire minute, then he hit the glass door with some force, running away from the place.

— Heyyyy! There's some weird people over here! Heyyy, I need some help! — Ryuji yelled as he ran through the corridor and went towards the hall entrance.

— Hm!? What's the matter!? — The security Shadow said walking out of the room. He heard the sound of shots and ran towards the origin of the sounds. Ann walked away from her hideout and checked if there was anyone in the room. Once she confirmed the room was safe, she went in and accessed the terminal.

— You'd better make it, Skull… — She said inputting the commands and waiting for other team signals. At the catwalk, Yusuke finished tying Morgana on to the hook.

At the same time, Yusuke was tying up Morgana on the hook.

— Is this good? — Yusuke asked, checking the supernatural cat, seeing if he was carefully tied up.

— Yeah, it's perfect! — Morgana said excitedly.

— You seem to be enjoying this. — The fox-themed thief commented.

— Only the best can appreciate these critical moments. Plus, this feels like we're really phantom thieves. — The supernatural cat said with a huge grin.

— But we're phantom thieves…

— True…

— No matter. We'll be counting on you, Mona. And Panther as well! — Yusuke said seriously. He signaled to Ann who promptly pressed the enter on the terminal.

— That's Fox's signal! Good luck, everyone!

— Joker, now! — Yusuke said and Ren pulled the lever, making the hook go down. Morgana managed to grab the Treasure and he wrapped it carefully before signaling back to Yusuke.

— There, pull him back, Joker! — Yusuke said. Ren pulled the lever up and brought Morgana back.

— Sorry for the wait! — Ann said coming inside.

— My bad! It took me ages to get that guy off my trail! — Ryuji said coming as well.

— Wait… Where's Mona…? — Ann asked.

— He's still tied up on the hook. Let's regroup and get him! — Ren said, going to the catwalk. The others followed him and when they arrived at the extraction point, Morgana was there holding the Treasure.

— Hehehe! How's there for a skilled plan? — Morgana asked.

— That was amazin', Mona! — Ryuji exclaimed happily.

— It was excellent, but our job is not over yet. We still need to go to a safe place. Let's go to the garden. — Ren said, taking the Treasure and helping to untie Morgana from the hook.

— L-Lord Madarame! Th-The piece is gone!

— Ngh…! How dare those vermin…! — Madarame howled. — But now we'll corner them like the rats they are! Lock all the doors at once! They have nowhere to run!

— That's our cue to get out of here! — Morgana said, running towards the exit.

— So? What'd the Treasure turn out bein'? — Ryuji asked. Ren showed the Treasure covered by a purple piece of cloth. — I'm guessin' it's a paintin' based on the shape.

— You guess…? I'm sure of it… — Ren said.

— We can look into that later. For now, we must escape. — Yusuke said.

— I agree… Hmm… Too easy…

— Joker…? — Ann asked.

— That was too easy. Everyone get ready for the worst! — Ren said, preparing himself.

They nodded as they rushed towards the great hall entrance. Once they arrived at the exit of the server room, they tried to get out, but the door didn't budge.

— Dude, no way! It's not openin'!? — Ryuji said.

— Seriously?! — Morgana exclaimed in disbelief.

— I heard sounds coming from above the crane! Check out above! — Said one of the guards.

— Dammit! — Ryuji exclaimed.

— Wh-Wh-What do we do!? — Morgana asked, afraid.

— What?! You don't got a plan about how to get outta here!? What kinda master thief are you!? — Ryuji asked.

Ren, keeping his cool as always, looked back at the catwalk.

— Follow me! I have an idea! — Ren said, rushing towards the catwalk and walking over the place.

— Huh? Where'd Madarame go? — Ryuji asked, noticing the absence of Madarame.

— We can worry about that later. For now, we must leave the place. — Yusuke said.

— I agree. This way. — Ren said, walking over the catwalk and reaching a window.

— A window! — Ryuji exclaimed. — But where'd it go?

— That's not the time for that, Skull. That's our way out of here. — Ren said, going into the window and reaching the other side. Ren noticed they went back to the maze they came from, however, he couldn't recognize the area, so he stated they were in another unexplored area of the maze.

— Whoa, this shit's real high up… — Ryuji exclaimed, frightened by the height of the place.

— Follow me, and be careful where you walk. I want you all to come back in one piece.

Ren climbs down the place, going carefully and rushing over the place. The other thieves followed him as Ren checked their way out of there. He went down until he found a portal.

— That's our way out of here! — Ren said.

— Are you sure about it? I mean it's a portal, but the destination is unknown… — Yusuke said.

— We don't have time for that, we need to go.

— For real!? But… I guess there's no other way. — Ryuji said.

The thieves went into the portal and once they set their foot on the other side, they noticed they were back at the courtyard in front of the main hall entrance.

— Is this… the courtyard!? — Ryuji asked.

— It is. We're safe… for now…

— Joker…

— There's something wrong… — Ren said, feeling something was out of place. Morgana rushed to the middle of the courtyard as he laughed excitedly.

— I knew it! All that security would've been meaningless if it just led them on back inside! — Morgana exclaimed excitedly.

— It seems we managed to escape from their siege… — Yusuke said, relieved.

— Meaningless… Escape…

— Joker… — Morgana asked worriedly.

— Hey, did you check what the Treasure? — Ren asked worriedly.

— No, I didn't look at it. Why?

Ren rushed and took the Treasure from Morgana and unwrapped the Treasure, revealing an ordinary canvas with a scribble drawn on it.

— What!? — Morgana exclaimed.

— THIS is the Treasure!? — Ryuji exclaimed.

— Look out! Get back! — Yusuke exclaimed as he and Ren noticed the electrical poles rising up. The thieves managed to escape from the electric trap.

— Meddlesome vermin.

They saw Shadow Madarame coming from the hall, being escorted by two Shadows. One of them was carrying a gaudy painting under his arm, protecting it as his most valuable treasure.

— Madarame! — Ren and Yusuke said.

— Is this what are you looking for? — Shadow Madarame said pointing at the painting.

— I knew it… It was too easy and you seemed awfully calm when we retrieved the fake treasure from the laser cage. — Ren said calmly as ever.

— At least one of you are smart… — Shadow Madarame said.

— How dare you trap me like some kind of mouse! — Morgana yelled furiously.

— So, you had a fake prepared, huh!? — Ryuji yelled.

Ren raised one of the arms and they noticed that was their cue to calm down.

— Well, well, looks like at least one of you is calm about this… Even though you were tricked by me…

—I never thought you would let us take your Treasure that easily. Besides, it was obvious that it was a mere counterfeit. Hiding under a cloth was an obvious sign.

— Still, you have stolen it.

— Well, we needed to drag you out to get the real deal. — Ren replied, shrugging. — And trust us, we're not going to get back without the original.

— Why not? Counterfeits are accepted in the world of Japanese art.

— Actually, replicas are accepted all over the entire world, but only they're stated as replicas. As an artist, you should know that well. — Ren replied.

— I hate kids who think they are smarter than they show… They don't know their place…

— Why…? What has made you change like this!? Is it because you became famous!? — Yusuke asked indignantly.

Shadow Madarame laughed.

— Such naivety…

— Can't you understand how much it pains me to inquire about the crimes of my foster father!? — Yusuke asked indignantly.

— …Now that I think back, the only reason why I took you in was due to my ties with your mother. That woman never lost her passion for painting even after her husband died. Her skills and talents were astonishing… That's why I decided to look after her.

— You don't feel responsible or neither feel some compassion towards your own apprentices, do you…? — Ren asked indignantly. Shadow Madarame laughed again.

— Correct. And you know the best part of it? All her works are mine. Yes! Your mother and the artwork she created—they're all MY works of art!

— That's why Vera couldn't recognize your style… You've been plagiarizing from the very beginning! — Ren said even more outraged.

— No…

— How low can you sink? — Ann asked, outraged as well.

— That's something that is out of our comprehension, you vermin. Now I suppose I can grant you a gift before you all die. Behold—a glimpse of the genuine "Sayuri".

— Genuine…? — Yusuke asked, confused.

With a nod of his head, Shadow Madarame ordered the Shadow to show the portrait. The "Sayuri" was shown to the thieves, but with a major difference: The woman in crimson clothes was carefully holding a baby.

— The original drawing… — Ren said, astounded.

— That's… the real "Sayuri"…? It can't be…!

— Fox? — Ann called.

— Mother… — Yusuke whispered in disbelief.

— Huh?! — Ryuji exclaimed, confused.

— What!? — Ann exclaimed, surprised.

— You! — Ren growled in outrage. Shadow Madarame gave a maniacal laugh.

— That's right! You two were right. Especially you all this time! — Shadow Madarame said pointing at Yusuke, then he pointed at Ren.

— That's a portrait of my mother! — Yusuke explained feeling the anger growing inside him.

— Indeed it is. This was painted by your mother. It's a portrait of herself. A woman who knew her death was coming painted her last wishes, for the son she would leave behind. That is the truth behind the mystery of the "Sayuri"'s expression!

— Now I do understand the inconsistency…. What you have done… That's inexcusable…! — Ren said indignantly.

— You stole something THAT personal!? — Ryuji yelled outraged as well.

— Why…? Why have you done such a thing…? — Yusuke asked, depressed.

— I knew it at first glance… I knew it'd be a huge success if I added a touch to the painting and announced it under my name!

— But the baby in the picture… Why did you paint over it? — Yusuke asked.

— …It was all a stage! If the baby is erased, the reason for the woman's expression will become a mystery! That is what the general public is drawn to! Each of those parasitic critics wrote the same thing!

— I always felt something was off about all of this… Now I know what it is. — Ann said.

— True… Now I do understand your obsession with the "Sayuri". — Ren said.

— If you really treasured that painting, you wouldn't even think of replicating it for profit! You don't love art at all!

— No Panther, if he truly cared about it, he wouldn't even have tampered in the first place… Neither stolen it. — Ren said with a deadly glance towards Shadow Madarame. — You're just a cheap phony, a robber who lacks talent. You're no better than a criminal!

— Who cares? I do have a real Treasure with me! — Shadow Madarame exclaimed.

— Even though you have a real Treasure, your true skills are nothing more than those scribbles on that fake! — Morgana said

— It makes me laugh, asshole! — Ryuji said.

— So you defy me no matter what… — Shadow Madarame stated angrily.

— We defy anyone who thinks it can rule over anyone. — Ren replied.

— Who do you think you ARE? A judge who can judge anyone?

— Perhaps I am, perhaps I am not, but even a Judge has to follow the law. No one's above the law, and that includes you. Ichiryusai Madarame, your museum will be closed and your exhibit has been canceled permanently.

— You all shall pay for that insolence. Well then, since you're MY work of art, Yusuke, I'm going to reap for the sake of my future. Along with those insolent friends of yours there! Especially that one! — He said pointing at Ren.

— I can't believe you're treating both mother and son like they're objects… You're inhuman! — Ann exclaimed.

— Fox? — Morgana called worriedly, seeing Yusuke being quiet.

— I've heard that you destroy the "art" once they outlive their usefulness… Did that include my mother as well? — He asked in a dangerous tone. Ryuji noticed the fox-themed thief had drawn his katana.

— She just so happened to have a seizure in front of me. That's when a thought crossed my mind… If I don't call for help and leave her be, I could obtain her painting without any strings attached! — Shadow Madarame said with a giant smile plastered on his face.

— No… You let her die!? — Ann asked in disbelief. Ryuji grabbed Yusuke's shoulder, holding him.

— She was physically weak. No one would doubt if she just dropped dead because of a seizure. Above all, Yusuke, didn't you think it was odd that I discovered your talent when you were only three? The reason why I kept you around was to keep you from realizing the truth behind "Sayuri".

— You killed her…! — Yusuke said, pointing his katana towards Shadow Madarame.

— Hey, calm down! — Ryuji said.

— The artistic talents you have inherited from your mother were a delightful miscalculation, though. If I'm going to steal ideas, it's much easier robbing the future of brats who won't talk back to adults. It's thanks to you that I came up with the idea. You have my gratitude.

However, to Shadow Madarame and most of the thieves' surprise, Yusuke laughed. A vivid laugh which shocked the ruler of the Palace.

— Yusuke…? — Ann called.

— No Madarame, I'm the one who should thank you. Every reason for me to forgive you has disappeared without a trace at this very moment! You aren't some rotten artist… You're a despicable fiend who wears the skin of an artist! — Yusuke said determinately.

— You… You…! You! All good-for-nothings…! Barging into my museum and doing whatever the hell you want…

The surroundings changed as Madarame glanced furiously at the thieves.

— Those who have the connections make the rules; those who don't, follow them. Not to mention the value of art is all subjective! I make the rules in the art scene! — Madarame said furiously as the surroundings distorted with the will of Shadow Madarame. — I am the supreme being! I am the god of the art world!

Shadow Madarame laughed as he changed, revealing his true form, composed of flying canvas, one for each eye, one for the nose, and one for the mouth.

— I'll paint all over you!

— I will take you down Madarame! For my mother's sake and the sake of everyone, you've used over all those years! — Yusuke said.

— I will kill you all!

Ren looked at Madarame and pointed his knife at him.

"I've proven his guilt in court, now I need to assure he's not going to escape from his punishment with my teammates. He will pay for his crimes; I, we need to make sure of it. I will make justice prevail." With that thought, Ren went into his offensive posture, ready for the battle. "For Yusuke's sake, Yusuke's mother's sake, and all the people Madarame has used over these years, I will win this battle! I will fight for justice and for the truth!"

— Let's begin your vermin…! — Shadow Madarame said.

— You used others for your own despicable desires, Madarame… You aren't even worth it for the art you "create"!

— Fox, don't lose focus! — Morgana warned.

— You dare to not only defy me, but you also dare to judge me, Yusuke!? I shall kill you! I'll make you regret judging me!

— No, Madarame. You will pay for your crimes. — Yusuke said determinedly.

— Ichiryusai Madarame, you've gone too far. You think you're a god, but you've proven yourself you're a demon. We shall teach you where your place is. We'll teach you where you truly belong. — Ren said determinedly as well. — Persona! Arsène! Eiha!

The battle started and the thieves promptly went to attack Madarame who simply withstand the attacks with ease. Then the right-eye canvas winked, casting a fire elemental skill towards Yusuke, knocking him down.

— Fox! — Ren yelled, ready to take cover for Yusuke, protecting him from Madarame's next attack.

Then the right-eye canvas winked again, casting an electric elemental skill towards Ren, who was knocked flat too.

— Joker! — Morgana exclaimed from his safe place, unable to help them. — Dammit. I wish I could be more helpful.

Madarame blinked his right-eye canvas again, striking Ryuji who better withstood the attack. blinking his left eye, he cast the Tarukaja skill, and he raised up his attack power. Ryuji took advantage of his distraction and he called his Persona, using the Rampage skill, he managed to hurt all the canvas except for the mouth, which recovered some health.

— For reals!? — Ryuji exclaimed seeing his attack had no effect on one of his targets.

The battle continued and Ann drew her gun and shot all the canvas in one single round. Madarame's nose canvas spun as casting an aerial elemental skill towards Ryuji, but thanks to the accessory he was using the attack wasn't effective enough to knock him down. Angered, Madarame's mouth canvas advanced towards Ann and tried a melee attack which the femme fatale thief managed to dodge. Yusuke recovered and he also drew his gun and shot Madarame's left eye, defeating him in the process. Ren also recovered from the knockdown, standing up and putting down his weapons, ready to call his Personas. Changing to Matador, he cast the Media skill, recovering some of the health of the team.

— Everyone, apply physical attacks at the eyes and the nose. Use elemental attacks at his mouth! — Ren ordered as he dodged an attack from Madarame. Then the right eye trembled, and the left eye was restored, floating back to its position.

— They regenerated!? — Morgana exclaimed.

— It seems we need to take all of them down! — Ren said dodging another attack.

— You're serious!? Dammit… Joker may be right! Those things can come back if we don't take them down at once!? — Morgana said. — Be careful guys!

The battle went as the thieves charged against Madarame, who was striking as well. Casting the Rakunda skill at Ryuji, decreasing the defense of the punk thief. Ryuji cast the Zio skill at the mouth canvas, dealing some damage. Ann summoning Carmen also dealt some damage to Madarame's mouth. Yusuke cast the Bufu skill, causing major damage and Ren used the Media skill again to restore the health of the team.

— Insolent's vermin…! I shall teach you the frustration of the artist! Take this!

Madarame threw a huge amount of black paint toward Ryuji, who was severely affected by the substance.

— What the hell!?

Madarame laughed as he cast the Rakunda skill at Ryuji again, extending the effects of the skill on the pirate-themed thief.

— I don't like this! We need to be careful with that! — Morgana said.

— I will debuff him! Persona! Carmen! Use Dekaja!

Using the Dekaja skill, all the buffing stats of Madarame were nullified. Infuriated with that, Madarame used the Maelstrom skill to take Ryuji down.

— Skull! — Ann, Ren, Yusuke, and Morgana exclaimed. Madarame laughed as he attacked Ren. However, due to his Persona, the attack was blocked.

— Dammit! That black paint affects all his affinities, leaving him vulnerable! Don't let him cover you with that paint! — Morgana warned.

— Hahahaha! Now you see? That's my power!

— What a power. Tell me, did you always do that to anyone who is better than you? Is easier to knock anyone down when you ruin their chances. — Ren provoked.

— You still dare provoke me even after all of that?

Ren laughed as the battle went on. The 19th-century-themed thief attacked Madarame with the Mabufu skill, however that attack was absorbed by both eyes. Madarame restored the mouth painting and Ren grunted annoyed with the recovery of Madarame. Ryuji recovered from the knockdown and wiped all the black paint over his body.

— Time for some payback! Captain Kidd! Zio! — Ryuji yelled as he attacked Madarame's mouth.

— Carmen! Diarama! — Ann yelled casting the Diarama skill on Ryuji, restoring a great amount of health of the pirate-themed thief.

— Thanks, Panther! — Ryuji said.

Ren noticed the nose painting was twitching and he promptly nodded his head towards Yusuke, who caught his signal.

— Goemon! Bufu!

The shogun Persona cast the Bufu skill at Madarame's mouth, defeating the painting again as Ren striked his nose, defeating the other painting as well.

— The eyes still have some health. Skull, I need you to buff me up! Panther, use your guns against the eyes. Fox, attack with all your strength! — Ren ordered.

The thieves went as Ren ordered and managed to defeat one of the eyes. However, the last canvas restored eye painting, extending the battle. Madarame threw some black paint at Ren, who dodged the attack

— Dammit! He's recovering quickly! And this attack of his is truly troublesome! — Ren said while dodging the attack, jumping close to Morgana.

— True. That paint-coating attack is a real hassle… So, what's the plan?

Ren looked around and saw a few gallons of paint at the corner, which Madarame was ignoring.

— I do have an idea. Mona, can you help me with him?

— Of course, I can do that.

— At my signal, you'll come to the battle.

— ! Got it!

— Fox. I need your help. It's time to turn the tables on him.

Yusuke saw the paints and he understood what Ren meant. The battle went on and they managed to defeat all the paintings, forcing Madarame to come back to his normal form.

— Madarame's out! — Morgana said.

The thieves surrounded Maradame and pointed their guns at Shadow Madarame.

— Dammit…! I'm the great Madarame… The Madarame that gathers a full crowd every time he opens an exhibit! I'm not someone that worthless brats like you are allowed to defy!

— Enough of your egoistic ranting! Taste the wrath of all those you've preyed upon.

The thieves performed an All-Out Attack and struck Madarame with all their strength, dealing him good damage, but not enough to defeat him.

— I'm the great artist, Madarame! If you brats can't fathom that… Then you'll witness it for yourselves! Behold my master craft! True Fake!

Madarame extended both his arms and a strong wind came and four pillars of energy emerged, becoming four elemental doppelgangers of Madarame.

— What!?

— How!?

— When!?

— Wha—!? He made copies of himself!? Wait… Ha, I see now. Creating copies IS his specialty!

— Look carefully. They have elemental powers based on our weaknesses. Everyone, be careful. Panther, Skull, Fox, pay attention to their attacks and follow my lead, got it?

— Got it! — The thieves replied.

— Now then, let's keep the plan! Persona! Matador! Garu! — Ren said, striking a Garu skill at the electric counterfeit of Shadow Madarame. — Fox! Baton!

Passing the baton to Yusuke, he called Goemon and cast the Bufu skill at the fire counterfeit. After that, Yusuke passed the baton to Ryuji, who struck the wind counterfeit with the Zio skill; and he finished with Ann who cast the Agi skill on the ice counterfeit, striking him twice and killing him in the process.

— What!?

— Skull!

— Got it! Captain Kidd! Zio!

Attacking the wind doppelganger, Ryuji distracted Madarame enough to Ann attack him with her Persona power. Yusuke followed Ann and shot Madarame, discharging his gun at the real Madarame.

The fire doppelganger recovered from his knockdown and he glanced furiously at the thieves.

— Damn clueless brats… My fiery rage shall reduce you all to mere ashes! Flame Dance!

Extending his arm towards Yusuke, the fire doppelganger cast a dancing flame against Yusuke and Ann, knocking the artist down. The wind doppelganger stood up as well.

— Disappear from my sight without a trace, like dust scattered in the wind! Maelstrom!

Attacking Yusuke again with the Maelstrom, the wind doppelganger laughed. The electric doppelganger recovered and stood up.

— My brilliance strikes like a flash of lightning—and now you'll taste it for yourselves. Thunderclap!

The electric doppelganger attacked Ren with a Thunderclap, but the Victorian-styled thief dodged the attack.

— You…! True Fake!

The original Shadow Madarame restored his ice doppelganger.

—Tch! He's back. Persona! Matador! Garu!

Killing the electric Persona, Ren passed the baton to Ann, who cast the Agi skill on the ice doppelganger Madarame, knocking him down.

— Skull, baton!

— Gotcha!

Passing the baton to Ryuji, he attacked the original Madarame. Taking an item, he took a freezing spray and a stun gun from the inventory and threw the spray at the fire doppelganger, knocking him down. With the stun gun, he attacked the wind doppelganger, killing him.

— Great job, Skull!

Ryuji attacked Madarame again and Ann attacked Madarame. Yusuke stood up and attacked the fire doppelganger, who stood up and managed to knock the ronin thief unconscious.

— No! Fox is unconscious! This is bad!

— Skull! Panther!

— Got it, Joker!

Ren went to the front and attacked Madarame who dodged and cast the True Fake skill, casting two new fire doppelgangers and an electric doppelganger. At the same time, Ryuji took Yusuke and dragged him to a safe place, and gave him some revival medicine, making him come back to his senses.

— Rest. We deal with it! — Ryuji said going back into the battle.

— Matador! Mapsi!

Casting the psychic elemental attack, Ren managed to deal considerable damage and kill one of the fakes Madarame. The original Madarame grunted in pain.

— Stop this! Is this how you show your gratitude to the man who raised you?! — Shadow Madarame exclaimed.

— Gratitude is one thing. Forgiveness is another. I'll not forgive you for your sins. You shall pay for your crimes! — Yusuke said going back to the battle. — Persona! Goemon! Vicious Strike!

Striking all Madarames', the ice doppelganger grunted in anger.

— You dare to defy an esteemed elder? May you all freeze in fear! Silent Snowscape!

Casting an ice attack, he extended his arm towards Ann, knocking her down. Sending another attack towards her, Ryuji went and stood in the way of the attack, protecting Ann and being hit.

— Panther! Skull! Are you two alright!? — Morgana exclaimed.

One of the flame doppelgangers attacked Yusuke, knocking him unconscious again. He took advantage and attacked Ren, who resisted the attack.

— Dammit! I need to do something!

Ren took another revival medicine and used it on Fox, making him recover. Ryuji attacked Madarame and Ann took another recovery item and shared it with the team. After they recovered, they went back to the offensive. The quadruplets of doppelgangers attacked incessantly as Madarame simply watched the thieves stand up against him.

— You're still defying me!? I grant you this, you are strong, but you're not strong enough to defeat me! I shall grant you all my grace!

Extending his arms, Madarame threw a wave of black paint, splatting over the thieves, however, Ren and Yusuke dodged the attack.

— Everyone attack with all our might! Now!

Yusuke noticed the signal and the thieves attacked with their Personas, and the shock of the powers was enough to distract him. Yusuke jumped and hid behind one of the plant beds, being replaced by Morgana. The thieves continued to attack as Yusuke sneaked through towards the gallons of paint.

— Dammit… Dammit… Stop it, you brats, or else…! — Madarame threatened, but his trembling voice betrayed his calm behavior.

— Or else what? Do you think we'll be daunted by such threats!? — Yusuke replied angrily.

— I shall have no mercy then. I'll kill you, Yusuke. I'll kill your friends in front of you. I'll make you suffer before you die!

Ren laughed.

— What is so funny!?

— For someone so self-proclaimed talented, you truly lack the skills of being original. I could even name some plagiarists who've done the same thing you have done.

— What!?

— You will kill us? Don't make me laugh! You are too cowardly to do such a thing.

— Silence!

— Or else? What are you gonna do? You are going to cover me with paint? Attack me with those cheap copies of yourself? For a copycat, I thought you were at least a little better at hiding things.

— Silence!

Ren laughed as he dodged one of Madarame's attacks. He tried to attack the others, but they managed to dodge as well.

— You truly are full of yourself, Madarame. Your fiery rage will reduce us to ashes? Your majestic brilliance will strike us like lightning? You will make us disappear like dust? You will make us freeze in fear? For someone who plays by the rules of the strongest, you aren't much of a genius in this game. Anyone can do better than you in keeping such a facade.

— Why you…!

— The only thing you've proven is to take advantage of people who can't stand up to you because they simply need to survive. You're so cowardly you even abused an innocent woman and her child to gain your profit.

— Insolent whelp!

— Ha! Ha! You're a genius? For someone who made scribbles, I need to admit you at least have some talent at copying things!

Then all the doppelgangers attacked Ren at the same time, sending him flying away. The others stood between Ren and the doppelgangers attacks, protecting Ren from their attacks.

— U-Ugh!

— So, thief? You've played enough with my person. Wait… There are four of you… But where's Yusuke?

— Madarame, in this world being strong isn't enough. Being smart is more of simply using anything in your favor.

Yusuke grabbed the gallons of paint and prepared his attack. Ren noticed it and smiled defiantly.

— Being smart is being capable of using the cons to your advantage and being able to surpass any adversity!

Yusuke splattered the paint over Madarame and his doppelgangers and that weakened them as Ren expected.

— Skull!

— Captain Kidd! Rampage!

— Fox!

— Goemon! Vicious strike!

Both physical attacks were enough to knock down Madarame and kill the doppelgangers. Shadow Madarame saw them pointing their guns at him ready to attack.

— W-Wait! Yusuke, if you do that, your life will end! All the comfort and the goods you have will disappear in the blink of an eye! Are you sure about wanting that?

— Between that and living a life of abuse and slavery, I prefer to be free of your tyranny.

They performed an All-Out Attack and defeated Madarame, who fell to his knees, weak and ostracized. He saw that his guards abandoned him, dropping the Treasure in the process. He grabbed the Treasure and tried to crawl away, only to be followed by Yusuke and Ren.

—Eek! N-no… No one cares for true art… All they want are easily recognized brands! I'm a victim in this too! W-Woundn't you agree!? — Shadow Madarame asked desperately, as he held his Treasure within him as his life depended on it.

— Excuses now? — Ryuji asked, following them.

— The art world revolves around money after all… You can't rise up without any money… Yusuke, you truly understand, don't you!? Being a poor artist is truly miserable! I just didn't want to return to that life!

— A fiend like you has no right to speak about the world of art! — Yusuke said angrily, but he gently grabbed the Treasure. — You're done for—along with this whole wretched world!

— B-But… Please… D-Don't kill me!

— You'll never understand, do you, Madarame? — Ren said.

— W-What?

— If you truly understood the world of art, you would have been able to become an incredible artist on your own, without using the skill and the talents of others to ascend. That includes the Kitagawa's.

— H-Huh!?

— If you truly cared about art, you may have found a way to strive on your path through this world, doing your best to make your name. If not as an artist, as a teacher. As much as I hate to admit it, you have taught Yusuke to be an artist well. And he's not only talented and skillful, he does also have the love and passion to make his name. You could've lived through them. However, you decided to take everything away from him, to fulfill the void in your heart.

— Y-You…

— Moreover, that won't satisfy you. You used and threw away every student you had, as you did with Mrs. Kitagawa. Over and over. And for your own sake. That vanity of yours has blinded you to the true beauty of life and of art as well. You could have reached an estimated and priceless treasure, the riches you could take with you for all your life, however, you'll live with this void for the rest of your life, along with the burden of destroying several lives, talents you wasted on your vanity. That punishment itself is worse than death. — Ren said with severe eyes.

— He's right and I couldn't agree more. That itself is worse than death. — Yusuke said, taking the Treasure. — I'm not going to kill you. Return to yourself in reality and confess your crimes—all of them!

— Y-You're not going to kill me?

— No. But you will do as we told you.

— B-But…

— Swear it! — Yusuke exclaimed furiously.

— *shriek* All right! All right!

— I do believe that's enough… — Yusuke said, walking away.

— Wh-What about the other one though?

— Other one…? — Yusuke asked, confused.

— The one with the black mask?

— What did you just say?!

To the thieves and Madarame's surprise, Ren went to Madarame and grabbed him on his shoulders.

— What do you mean by that!?

— You don't know…?

— Hm? A black mask? Wait… Who's he talking about…? — Ann asked, confused.

— Dude…? — Ryuji asked worriedly, seeing the leader of the Phantom Thieves acting strange.

— Joker…? Wait… It can't be… — Morgana said, realizing the fact.

— What is it, Mona? — Ann asked.

— There's another intruder beside us within this Palace!? — Morgana exclaimed, frightened.

— Yes, it does. — Ren replied to their surprise. — When?

— Huh?!

— Since when have you seen that "black mask"?

— I-I-I don't know, okay? He came one day… Perhaps after you've come… Why…?

— Dammit! That's worse than I expected.

— Joker…?

— You're lucky that the one with the black mask hasn't killed you. — Ren said, releasing Madarame and looking at his team. He ran his hand over his head nervously.

— Wait, what do you mean by…

Then the Palace started to collapse. The thieves looked at the place crumbling and Ryuji looked at Morgana and nodded to him.

— There's no time! Hurry! — Ryuji said to Morgana who nodded in understanding. Morgana took a small distance and transformed into his vehicle form.

— Get in!

The thieves ran to Morgana and Yusuke wrapped the Treasure with the purple cloth. He ran towards Morgana when someone called him.

— Yusuke. Wait!

Yusuke turns to Shadow Madarame, who was looking at him with pleading eyes. He was distraught, sweating nervously.

— What should I do…?

— You've heard us. Atone for your sins, put an end to all this, and use your own artwork for once.

— Yusuke! — Ann called. Yusuke nodded and went into Morgana. The thieves parted and Madarame could only see them going.

— No, wait! Please! Yusuke! Yusukeee! — He begged.

The Palace collapsed as the Thieves managed to escape successfully from the place.

Real World. Shibuya District.

Madarame's Atelier.

After School.

— The destination has been deleted. — The Metaverse Navigator annunciated.

— Are you all right? — Miles asked after seeing them coming from the Metaverse.

— Yes, we are… — Ren replied with a flat tone.

— Ren…?

Ren could only look at his mentor, who understood the message.

— I see… Well, we should be going.

— True, it would be bad if people started to get suspicious of us. We should leave at once. — Morgana said with a serious frown. The thieves ran to Miles's car. However, Yusuke stood, looking at the Treasure.

—Yusuke, c'mon! — Ryuji called.

— Right.

Yusuke took one last look at the shack he lived and said:

— Goodbye, Sensei.

Shibuya Station. Platform (Hideout)

After School.

At the hideout, the thieves were enjoying their moment of peace and victory, savoring a few drinks they took from the vending machines.

— Phew! I guess the mission was a success! All that's left is to see if he had a change of heart or not. — Ryuji said, taking a sip of his coffee. — Ugh! So bitter… Why'd I get it black? — He asked, looking at Ren.

— Sorry, the vending machine only has it black… — Ren replied, having a sip as well.

— The "Sayuri"… — Yusuke said admiring the painting.

— You're not gonna get all teary-eyed and say stuff like "Mom…!" Are you? — Ryuji asked, surprised to see Yusuke's calm behavior.

— To think that this painting was the source of Madarame's distorted desires… The only saving grace is that my mother won't know what's transpired. — Yusuke said with a genuine smile and changed his glance towards Ren, Ryuji, and Ann. — I should thank you all for everything once again. And to congratulate you for finding the truth.

— I had a hunch, but I wasn't expecting that to be honest. — Ren said.

— Nor I.

— In the end, even the original was altered as well… Ironic as it may be, this one here is her true self-portrait now. — Morgana said sadly.

— True… And the "original" is in the possession of the police now… What an irony… — Ren said sadly as well.

— It's a wonderful painting! — Ann said happily, admiring the original "Sayuri". — And… although it took some time, it's in your hands now, Yusuke. — Ann said happily.

— …I'm thankful for it. However, it's impossible for this painting to be acknowledged by society anymore.

— That's a shame because it's a unique painting that deserves to be appreciated. — Ren commented, then a bulb flicked inside his head. — Oh, I remembered something. Was "Sayuri" your mother's name?

—No. I doubt it's the name of any woman in particular. I bet it was to make it more mysterious—just a part of Madarame's foolish staging.

— Well, it would've been obvious that he plagiarized it if he had used the real name. — Morgana said.

— Perhaps, but there wasn't a way to prove it, since Yusuke's mother was dead at that time. — Ren said.

— True… So this is my mother… There's no way that I would remember her face clearly…

— You were only three at the time. It was almost impossible you could remember her face. But now you have a beautiful memento of her. — Ren said.

— True. I'm glad I was right about that rush of emotion I felt when I saw that painting… — Yusuke said happily.

— Yeah…

— Yelp, I'll finish this… I'll buy some soda for myself! — Ryuji said, standing up and going to the closest vending machine.

— By the way, great job in figuring out the inconsistency of my mother's painting. — Yusuke said proudly.

— It was nothing. Actually, when I think about it, your mother's painting was off in some aspects. I mean, when I think about it, the mist doesn't match up with the rest of the style. And her eyes had the tenure of a mother.

— You truly have good eyes to recognize a good piece of art. Did you think of changing jobs?

Ren laughed.

— Actually, I wished to work as a digital artist once. My dad is a designer and I always admired his work.

— I see. And what happened?

— Well…

There was a pause. Yusuke noticed Ren's foreshadowing expression and looked at him worriedly.

— …I had doubts about what I wanted to be. When I lost all my hope I thought I had no future…

Then Yusuke saw Ren's expression change, becoming radiant and vivid. The artist saw the young attorney giving a genuine happy smile.

— …Then I met my mentors, who managed to save me. Then I realized; that I could change people's lives by saving them. It was when I decided to follow their path. And I don't regret it for a single second.

— I see… They've inspired you as this painting has inspired me.

— Yes.

— Mikoto.

— Huh?

— I remembered my mother's name. It's Mikoto.

— That's a beautiful name… — Ren said with his eyes closed and a smile on his face. — Well… Everything ended well.

— Not everything… — Morgana said. — We have a mystery in our hands. And it seems you three know more than what you showed us… — Morgana said, staring at Ren.

— True, but I can't say it now. Right now is not a good moment. — Ren replied.

Ryuji came back from taking a large sip from his bottle of soda. Once he finished drinking he burped at Ann, who yelped surprised.

— Stop that! — She exclaimed.

— You're so vulgar, Ryuji…! — Morgana said in disappointment.

Ren managed to suppress a laugh seeing them and looked at Morgana.

— Well, I think you owe Ann an apology. — Ren said.

— Sorry 'bout that… So, now focusing on most important things… what're you gonna do now? We're gonna keep targetin' big shots. — Ryuji asked Yusuke.

— I don't know… and why do you do such things? — Yusuke asked, genuinely surprised by Ryuji's carefree behavior.

— It's to get back at scumbags and like… society in general? — Ryuji said. — We also wanna give courage to people that're sufferin' 'cause of selfish adults.

"Knowing Yusuke, I don't know if he's referring to Ryuji's attitude or his behavior with society." Ren thought. "Still, Ryuji does have a point there."

— And we wanna aid Ren to aid people with his legal shit. — Ryuji said with his usual wide smile.

— I see… Courage, hm… What good does that do? You mean the courage to stand up for themselves, correct? Will acquiring that make them happy? — Yusuke asked, looking at Ryuji.

— Er…

— Probably yes. Probably no. It all depends on the person. We need to give them the courage to fight for themselves while remembering they are not alone. They have someone who they can count on. I know that's not the proper answer, but that's my answer to it.

— Yeah, it's like Ren says… There's no knowin' whether it'll turn out good for everyone or not. Still, we won't know unless we give it a try.

— I see… In other words, it all depends on the person, hm? Then, the same can be said about myself right now. I also suffered because of an adult's selfish act. Moreover, if we investigate these Palaces it may expand my artistic repertoire.

— So, are you in? — Ren asked.

— Yes, I'm in.

— Then welcome to the Phantom Thieves of Hearts! — Ren said with a smile.

— Thank you.

— You really only think about art, huh? You're impressive. — Ryuji said with a grin, not impressed by the artist's passion.

— Well I won't take part in any inelegant plans, all right? — Yusuke said.

— Fair enough. — Ren said.

— And no worries! I've got us covered! — Ann said, winking at Yusuke.

— Really? — Ren and Ryuji said in unison.

— Plus, we have a rule that says we always have to decide on a target unanimously.

— How about it, Joker? — Morgana asked. — We can give our calling cards a lot of "ommph" if we have Yusuke on our team.

— You guys know my answer, but it doesn't hurt to say it again. Welcome aboard Yusuke. I hope we can get along well. Also, he'll be a great addition to our team.

— I see. I will try and live up to those expectations. — Yusuke said with a gentle smile.

— Well, at any rate… I'm rather curious… Another intruder beside us, huh? — Morgana said and everyone frowned. — And it seems one of us knows more than he shows…

— True… — Ann said, staring at Ren. — Our only clue's a black mask, so that doesn't necessarily mean it's just one person, right?

— No. Madarame was sure it was only one. He said a black mask, in the singular. — Ren said.

— But there's no way to check it anymore. The Palace's gone. — Ryuji said.

— About that, you had quite the reaction there. — Ann noted.

— I only have suspicions, until now. But I can't simply explain out of the blue. It's more complicated than it is.

— And what do you mean by that? Ren, you…

Ren sighed and said:

— Well, let's just say, things aren't as they are. Got it?

— I see… Still, I'll try to probe Madarame about it. I may be able to learn something about it.

— The probability is high that it will lead to nowhere. Still, it is worth a try. — Ren said.

— Are you sure? — Ann asked. — I mean—

— Don't worry about it. I'll contact you all if anything turns up. — Yusuke said confidently.

— I hope so… — Ren said.

— We should probably exchange our contact info with you then. — Ann said, picking up her phone.

— We should have done that when he joined us… — Ren said, picking up his phone as well.

The thieves changed their contacts with Yusuke and then Yusuke laughed in amusement.

— An artist, and a phantom thief… It seems I'll be engaging in two trades from here on… Very well. You only live once, after all. Still, the incident with that intruder does concern me a little.

— I'll investigate further about that if that makes everyone at ease. — Ren said. — Well I will see everyone later. Good bye.

Everyone said goodbye and went back to their homes.

— Ann, wait!

Ann turned to Ryuji, who was with his hands at the back of his head.

— 'Bout that I did… Sorry 'bout it. For reals…

— It's okay. It wasn't like I'm not used to your behavior. — Ann said calmly.

— Still, I've been a jerk to you since… That incident with Kamoshida…

— Yeah… About that, I'm sorry as well… I was being a bitch as well since that…

— It's okay… You're protecting Suzui-san… That's enough for me…

— Still, I was wrong. I'd hope we can still be friends… — The natural blonde girl said. Then Ryuji gave a huge grin.

— Course we can! We're friends, right? — He said happily.

— Yeah! So… Want to accompany me? — She offered.

— Course I wanna. It's dangerous for ya to being alone on the streets. — He said standing on her right. — After all, you need a knight in shiny armor.

— You're more like a punk in armor. — Ann said laughing.

— You're no fun, you know that? — He said dismayed. — Still, I'm glad you don't have to pose nude.

— Really?

— I'm serious. I hate to see you bein' forced to do somethin' you don't wanna. And I'm sorry 'bout that as well.

— It's okay… It wasn't like anyone has asked me that before.

Ryuji's face twisted in anger.

— If anyone tries somethin' funny with you, you can tell me. I'll make them regret it!

Ann was flabbergasted by Ryuji's sudden comment. She didn't expect that from Ryuji, nor his sudden offer of protection. She laughed and amusement and said:

— Don't worry, I can take care of myself, you silly!

— I know that… But it doesn't hurt to be sure, y'know? — He said averting his gaze towards the floor, kicking the air. She finds Ryuji's shy attitude cute and she simply puts her arms around his.

— Well, what are you waiting for? Follow me!

They went to the Station platform and Ren saw them at the corner. He couldn't help but smile at them.

"Perhaps… After all, they make a cute couple…"

Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.

Evening.

— Not only have we dealt with our second big target, we even have a new addition to the team! Goodness, things are going so well! — Morgana exclaimed happily.

— True, still we need to be careful. We can't afford to make any mistakes and be careless.

— That's right! We can't afford to be amateurs! Hehe…

— What is it?

— Could it be that one day our names will become common knowledge? — Morgana asked excitedly.

— Don't get your hopes too high. Remember, we need to be careful.

— I know. I know. Still, it's great the feeling of being successful in a mission! And…

— And…

— I have to say, you sure are something special. This is our fifth Persona-user. It'll help broaden our battle strategies as well. — Morgana said happily.

— I agree with you. Yusuke will be an indispensable member in our team.

— I couldn't agree with you more. Besides, having an eye for beauty is a must for phantom thieves. We're lucky to have Yusuke.

— Yeah. I think having an art specialist with us is way better than trusting in my limited knowledge.

— Yeah. An artist with talent is something you rarely come across. I mean, he IS a bit strange, but still…

— He's eccentric. Like Salvador Dali. No… on second thought, no one is weird as Salvador Dali.

— An artist, huh… Hey, Ren. What kind of person do you think I was? There's no way I'd turn out to be some bad guy in the end, right? I'm getting so engrossed with the embodiment of human desires…

— Yeah, me too…

— And that's not all. When it comes to the Metaverse, I'm the only one who can transform into a car… I'm special… but it's still odd…

— Perhaps you are a Transformer and you didn't know it. — Ren teased.

— Hey! But when you say that, it makes some sense…

— I was joking, you know that…

— Yeah, I know. Hey… Can you answer me something? Who could I actually be?

Ren thought for a moment and looked at Morgana with a smile.

— A human. I mean, even if you are a cat, I have never seen someone so human as you…

— You really think so? — Morgana asked and he sighed.

— I'm not one-hundred percent sure, but yes, I'm sure.

The supernatural human-cat sighed again and he said:

— Honestly, what a half-assed answer.

— I know… Sorry about it.

— Yeah, it's okay. But hey, there's no way a dashing, honorable rouge like me could be evil.

— I agree.

— Yeah! I'm a man! A man who saves those in trouble in the west, while punishing evildoers who may lurk in the east!

— Wow, you sound like a cowboy, partner! — Ren said and Morgana laughed as he continued his monologue.

— A man who chastises people that smoke inside the south, while saving bullied cats in the north. A man who has a sturdy body and vows to always do one good deed a day, be it rain or shine.

Ren gave a gentle laugh for that. A laugh he only reserved for occasions like that one.

— Yeah, I know that, like Zorro, who is a valiant fighter of justice.

— Yeah. I'm the kind of ideal person… Or so I hope.

— You already are this person in my eyes, got it? You are incredible, Morgana. — Ren said.

— Thank you. You know… I was thinking of something… If I turn back to being human… surely she'll take notice of me, won't she?

Ren knew Morgana was referencing Ann and only gave a gentle smile to the cat. As much as he knew the love for Ann was one-sided, he wasn't going to take down the cat's hopes.

— Perhaps… Wait a minute… Do you like someone Mona? — Ren teased, already knowing the answer.

— Me!? Don't be ridiculous! People chase after me when it comes to love!

— Right, right! I do believe in you. "Although Ann is unaware of your feelings my dear little friend." — Ren completed mentally.

— *sigh* Where should I go when I become human? I wonder where she'd like to go… An amusement park, a movie theater, a fancy café, shopping… What do you think?

Ren saw Morgana's eyes shining and he gave an amused laugh.

— Well, I'm sure she'll love it too. — Ren said.

"I feel my bond with Morgana is growing deeper."

Ren felt his power grow as his bond with Morgana deepened. After that, he received a message from the Phantom Thieves group chat.

Yo, good job guys. — Ryuji texted.

We all did our best. — Ann said.

Allow me to express my thanks once again. Because of you, I was able to retrieve the painting that had been filled with my mother's love — Yusuke said.

Hearing you say that makes the whole thing worth it, Yusuke! — Ryuji texted with accomplishment.

Seriously. I wasn't sure you'd really want to change Madarame's heart. — Ann commented.

I'm sorry to have worried you. I have no regrets about it now. — Yusuke said.

And the change of heart WILL happen this time, right? — Ann asked.

I'm sure it'll happen. Are you worried, Ann? — Ren asked.

Kind of. But I'm sure the change of heart will happen.

Yeah. We did it just like with Kamoshida. — Ryuji said.

By the way, I'm curious about what he said at the end. — Ann said.

You meant the other intruder beside us? It's something about a black mask, yeah?

That may have been nothing more than a lie. Madarame was quite deranged at that point, after all. — Yusuke said. — For now, we should wait for his change of heart in peace.

I can't simply agree more. — Ren said.

Ok.

"It's better not telling them now. Not now at least. It's too soon and we barely have any information about this black mask Persona-user… For now, I should leave it be…" Ren thought as we went downstairs and started to read a book.

Velvet Room.

Merely a dream.

"I'm back… Back at the Velvet Room." Ren thought as he promptly stood up and walked to the cell door.

— You have expelled one who was stained with vanity. You are one step closer to your rehabilitation. It's a delightful thing indeed.

— Our master is pleased. You should be honored, Inmate. — Justine said.

— However, that man's remarks are concerning. It seems another has made its way into the Metaverse.

— I wonder… Who could it be…?

— Do you have an idea, Inmate?

— No. Unfortunately, that is still beyond my knowledge. — Ren said. — Igor… Do you have an idea if that is really true…?

— Unfortunately, that is beyond my knowledge as well… — Igor replied.

"Odd, for some reason that strikes me, in an odd way…" Ren thought, but he didn't express it.

— But your rehabilitation is progressing smoothly… That is for certain.

— I see. I'm grateful for your earnestness.

— Perhaps you may find the answer eventually. May the devotion to your rehabilitation grow even deeper. I have high hopes for you.

— I see… Thank you for trusting me.

"I feel my bond with Igor is growing."

Ren felt his power growing as his bonds with Igor deepened. After that Igor smiled at Ren.

— Now, it's time to return to the real world. Rest the rest of the night. You may have a long day tomorrow.

May, 25. Wednesday.

Real World. Yongen-Jaya District.

Café Leblanc.

After School.

Ren was ready to go to school, when he heard his phone ringing. Picking his phone, he noticed it was a call from Yusuke.

— Hello. Amamiya speaking.

— It's Kitagawa. — Yusuke greeted. — I'm calling about Madarame's state. For the time being, he hasn't suffered a mental shutdown.

— That's good to know. Anything else?

— Other than that, his demeanor seems to have softened a bit. Is that a change of the heart?

— It could be. He's not threatening you anymore as far as I could hear. And I do believe it's just the beginning of it.

— I see… I was curious and looked into Kamoshida as well. It's as if he was an entirely different person. Will the same be true for Sensei?

— It will be. Have a little faith. I know it's difficult, but I assure you he will change.

— …I'm sorry to have taken your time. That's all I wanted to tell you. Good— Oh.

— What is it? — Ren asked, slightly worried.

— I'll try to ask him about the black-masked intruder from the Palace when the time is right.

— I see.

— Goodbye then. This time for sure.

— Goodbye. And thank you…

Yusuke ended the call, and Ren went downstairs. It was when he received another call.

— Hello. Amamiya speaking. — Ren said.

— Ren, it's me. Miles. — Miles replied.

— Hello Chief Miles.

— If you don't mind, can we visit you tonight? Phoenix and I.

— There's no problem. So, in the evening.

— Yes. We have things to discuss about your last case.

— I see. Well, I'll be waiting.

— Okay. I see you then.

Miles ended the call and Ren exited the Leblanc, going towards the Yongen-Jaya station. After arriving at the Shibuya Station. Checking the time on his phone, he heard someone approaching him.

— We meet again.

It was Makoto, who had a confident smile that bothered Ren, for some reason.

"What are you up to, Ms. Niijima…?" He thought as he turned to Makoto.

— It seems like it. So, do you live nearby? — He asked.

— Perhaps. It appears you're lying low lately. What's with the change? — She asked.

— Straight to the business, I see… Aside from my last case, I'm acting the same as usual.

— I see… I heard from my sister, but I couldn't believe you'd take another case and win. But don't worry about it. It must've been my imagination. Anyway, I wish the culprit would come forward soon. It's absurd to pretend I can do the police's job… I wish he considered my feelings before asking me this…

"He? Wait…"

— Are you under Kobayakawa's orders? — Ren asked. Makoto gasped surprised.

— How do you…

— Actually, it makes sense… No one is reckless and stupid enough to ask such a thing for a teenager who's related to a high prosecutor without a good threat. Ms. Niijima, are you having problems? If yes, you can call me anytime.

— Even if that is the case, I want to make sure you're not involved in trouble. You are a reflection of the Shujin Academy.

— That's something you don't need to worry about. I'm not into trouble, that I can assure you.

— Very well. Still, I will keep an eye on you.

— Ms. Niijima.

— Yes?

— If you need anything, you can call me. Here is my business card. — Ren said, giving the card to Makoto.

— Thank you, but you don't need to give me one. I'm sure my sister has your number.

— I see… Take care, Ms. Niijima. — Ren said.

Shibuya Station.

After School.

— I can't believe a woman is kidnapping stray cats. And you got almost kidnapped. — Ren said.

— I am telling you! That Ryoko Aino tried to kidnap me!

— Still, it's kinda impressive that she didn't catch you… Maybe next time…

— What!? — Morgana exclaimed and Ren snickered. — Hey, don't joke with that! This is a serious matter!

— I know. But it doesn't hurt to tease you a little.

— You're hopeless, you know that.

— You sound like my mentors… — Ren said in disappointment. Then he saw the politician giving one of his speeches. There were barely two people listening to him. Ren went towards the politician and listened to his speech.

— …There have been far too many incidents recently to ignore! Can anyone deny this!? The runaway-train incident, these mysterious psychotic breakdowns, a school with a corrupt teacher… We have yet to discover the truth of it all! That apathy that permeates society is a direct result of negligence by our government and the media.

— That's a good speech. — Ren commented aloud, catching the politician's attention.

— …You're listening quite attentively. Are you interested in politics? — The politician asked.

— Yes, in fact I am. — Ren replied.

— Are you a student? — The politician asked and Ren nodded in affirmation. — I'm delighted to captivate the interest of someone of your age.

— I need to. I… Work with an area related to that.

— I see… Hm…? Have I seen you somewhere before…?

— I work part-time at the beef bowl shop.

— Oh, right! You were working at the beef bowl shop before! You have a lot of perseverance for a young person.

— Thank you. You know, I'm interested in your speeches.

— If that is the case, if you're interested, I could use your help. I want to change the state of the country and to do so, I need the power of the youth… However, due to certain regulations, I can't offer a job to a student.

— I see…

— However, you can aid me as a volunteer. I was thinking you could learn some things if you choose to attend a few of my speeches though… So what do you think?

— I'd be glad to.

— Really!? That would be helpful indeed! Well then, would you mind telling me your name and contact information?

— No, I wouldn't mind. Here is my business card. I'm a student from Shujin Academy.

Ren exchanged with the politician his contact number.

— You're a student from Shujin Academy, hm? It's nice to meet you. My name is Toranosuke Yoshida.

— Likewise. My name is Ren Amamiya.

The politician checked Ren's business card and gasped surprised.

— Amamiya… Are you perhaps the lawyer who brought Suguru Kamoshida to justice?

— Yes, it's me.

— Oh my! It's an honor to work with you!

— Are you perhaps a member of the Diet? — Ren asked.

— I used to be a member of the Diet… but no longer. In the past twenty years, I've lost seven straight elections… This isn't good. I'm dwelling on the negative right before my speech.

— But how? You have a great speech and great ideas. — Ren said, genuinely surprised to hear that.

— Well, my young friend, that's only my fault. But it doesn't matter now. I hope I can count on your help immediately.

— Yes, you can count on me. So, what should I do?

— Well, if you please, hold this, like this. — Yoshida said giving to Ren a sign.

— Like this?

— Yes.

Ren stood on the left holding a sign. Yoshida started to give his speech and Ren listened to him carefully, taking mental notes of it.

"He does possess a good speech, but he lacks the confidence and the charisma…" Ren noted as he watched Yoshida giving his speech. The few people who were there were treating him with disdain, not giving the man the chance to defend himself. Still, Yoshida kept talking with conviction, as the crowd slowly disappeared. After finishing his speech, only he and Ren were there. He sighed tiredly and both walked to a corner.

— Thank you. That is all for today. Well, what did you think of my speech?

— It was a great speech, but there was one line that caught my attention. "The best interests of all?" That was an interesting choice of words. It was moving, you know. I wish I could be capable of doing the same.

— Indeed. Do you feel the same? — Yoshida asked and Ren nodded. — Such as I am, I'd like to believe that I'm capable of giving a moving speech. — Then Yoshida crestfallen in dismay, as he says with sorrow. — …However, there are times, like today, when the audience has a difference of opinion on a topic.

— I see. But your speech was so sincere, I cannot understand that.

— But they have a point at one thing. I need to get elected to do something. Some feel I should concentrate on getting elected before I worry about the others… Do you agree?

— They're wrong. A politician who doesn't care about others doesn't rule for his country, only for himself. No matter what, you have my support.

— Thank you. It's encouraging to know that my message has won over you. — Yoshida said happily. — But don't worry about the crowd reaction. I have grown quite accustomed to those types of reactions. Although, I don't know if that is necessary or a good thing.

— I do believe there is no problem in imposing yourself a little, you know. But if that doesn't bother you…

— Regardless, no matter what they say, I must continue on… For the sake of this country…

"With such determination, I'm sure he'll achieve his objective. I can learn a lot by listening to his speeches… That will be helpful for my cases and in the battles against the Shadows."

After some time talking Ren said his farewells to Yoshida and went back home.

Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.

Evening.

— Ren.

— Chief Nick, Chief Miles. — Ren greeted both the lawyers.

— You're late, they're here for almost an hour. — Sojiro said with some annoyance. — By the way, congratulations on your victory in court. I wasn't expecting you to do it in one single day.

— Neither did I, but I managed somehow…

— Still, you managed. Here's some coffee for you.

— Thanks. So, how is your stay in Japan?

— Good, although I never expected to come back here so soon. I hope the prosecutors in Los Angeles don't slack off during my absence.— Miles said, taking a sip of his coffee. — The coffee of this establishment is excellent, even with the rude behavior from the barista and café owner.

— That's none of your concern. Besides I treat anyone in the way I want — Sojiro replied with a harsh tone. Miles simply sighed in annoyance.

— My stay here is actually pleasant. At least that, since our case is not progressing as we expected. — Phoenix said, taking a sip as well. — That's better than Armando's. I want to see his face when he tries the coffee from this place.

— What case are you two working with? — Sojiro asked.

— Sorry, but that is classified. It's a measure we took for… public safety.

— Hm… But the kid knows that, right?

— There was no point in hiding from him. He'd know eventually. — Phoenix said.

— Ren is incredibly smart in figuring out things. There was no way we could hide that from him. — Miles said calmly as ever.

— You two are screwed if this is the case… if you can't keep this secret from this kid, imagine when your own life depends on it…

— That's none of your concern. — Miles replied back with the same harsh tone at Sojiro, who only grunted in annoyance.

— Okay, you two stop it right now. This is getting ridiculous. — Ren said annoyed.

— Sorry. — Said Miles, visibly embarrassed for being scolded by his own apprentice.

— Hmph. Watch the way you talk to me, kid. — Sojiro said, irritated by Ren's tone.

— I'm not being disrespectful. I just want to end this frivolous fight between you two, or you three in that case. — Ren said glaring furiously at Sojiro.

— Okay… Sheesh… These younglings nowadays.

— We're not that young, you know that…? — Phoenix said.

— Right… Sorry for my behavior. That one is on the house.

— No, it's alright. Besides we'd insist on paying you. You had all the trouble in making us coffee and serving us.

— Okay… — Sojiro said genuinely surprised. — Hey kid, you're going to discuss the case, right? — Sojiro asked and Ren nodded in affirmation. — I'll leave the shop for you. Please remember to lock it up, all right?

— All right.

— Good. Just don't try to destroy the place…

— Don't worry, I'll keep everything in its place.

— Good. I'm leaving now. Don't forget to lock the store up.

Sojiro took off his apron and picked up his hat and blazer and wore it, leaving the café. Phoenix and Miles watched him pass through the door.

— He's always like that? — Phoenix asked.

— He may be grumpy, but he's nice. He is teaching me how to make coffee and curry.

— That's good to know. At least he's trying to approach you. And how are your parents? — Miles asked.

— Worried, as always. Can't blame them. It's not exactly normal for their only son to live on probation in another city for an entire year.

Miles nodded and Phoenix became depressed.

— About that, sorry once again for that. We should have done better, you know…

— No. You two have saved me. That was my choice, the path I took, and I don't regret it one single bit. — Ren replied in an assuring tone. — But that doesn't matter, at least for now. I have information.

— We know that. Miles told me you were distant after stealing Madarame's Heart.

— Yeah… About that… — Ren looked back and forth at Morgana and his mentors. — Morgana, do you want to leave?

— Are you sure of that?

Ren sighed tiredly.

— At this point, I don't know anymore… I mean, we're about to discuss your findings in Madarame's Palace.

— You meant that, right?

— Yeah…

Morgana thought for a moment before saying.

— Only if you want to…

— Phoenix? Miles? — Ren called. They knew at that moment the decision was with them.

— Since our friend knows more about the Metaverse than us, we do believe the best option is to trust him with the information we have. — Miles said, being skeptical about their situation.

— I couldn't agree more. Besides, we're going to need all the information we need to establish our actual situation.

Morgana nodded in agreement and he stood on the seat. Ren sat after Morgana and looked at his mentors with a serious face.

— We will disclose what happened during our heist in Madarame's Palace. What I will say here, stays here, except for one piece of information. We…

Ren explained what happened during the heist, their escapade, the fake painting, Madarame's battle and the resolution of the battle. Ren resumed all the details to avoid making the explanation too long.

— I see… But is not that what you wanted to tell us… — Phoenix said, noticing Ren's tone of voice.

— True. The thing is, Madarame knew we were coming. Not only because we sent the calling card. Someone was infiltrating his Palace beside us.

— What!? — Both Phoenix and Miles exclaimed. — Are you saying…

— Not only that, Madarame mentioned the intruder. It's someone with a black mask.

— Ren, are you entirely sure about that? — Phoenix asked.

— I've asked Madarame myself. He thought that the intruder was with us. — Ren replied with a darkened frown.

— Dammit… So, our thoughts were correct… — Miles said, running his right hand nervously on his hair.

— What…? — Morgana asked. — Wait! Are you guys saying…?

— Morgana. We have the suspicion there was someone behind the psychotic breakdowns and mental shutdowns which is happening.

— Are you guys saying those incidents were being caused by someone? — Morgana asked.

— Yes. Not only that, they are happening during an interesting time, wouldn't you agree, Mona? — Ren asked.

— You guys know something. Something big. — Morgana stated.

— Yes, we do.

— And that is somehow involved with our last heist. Also with our Phantom Thief's operation.

— Correct.

— Why haven't you told us sooner?!

— Because that's top secret, Morgana! I can't simply disclose the details of our case.

— Case… Wait… That's…

— Yes, Morgana, we've been investigating these incidents even now. Honestly, that's why I wanted to tell them about the Palaces and the Metaverse in the first place, but it seems they knew it all along. Remember, they can hear you…

— So…?

— Yes. It seems the previous incidents had an effect on our case somehow. — Ren said.

— So, if that's true, then the Metaverse is one more of these manifestations. — Morgana said with a serious frown. — That means what is happening now is something bigger than I thought… So that means we need to get into the depths of Mementos soon as we can…

— The depths of Mementos…? What does that mean? — Phoenix asked, confused.

— Even I don't know. I only know there's something big there… Something we need to get to before…

— Before what…? — Miles asked, reluctantly.

— I… I don't know… The truth is… I don't have any memories of my past… All I can remember is that I was in the city… — Morgana admitted.

— I see… Perhaps you're related to that somehow, but I'm not sure about that… — Miles said nonchalantly.

— I see… May I ask you two a question?

— Go ahead.

— What happened to you two in your manifestation, is somehow related to us?

Phoenix and Miles went into thought for a brief moment, trying to see the connection with the manifestations.

— Actually no… At least, we don't know it yet… — Phoenix replied with a serious frown.

— Still, somehow you do expect us to discover what's happening in Mementos…

— You have roles to fulfill, as we do as well. However, you can decide your fate, as we decided our fate years ago.

— So, it's something really big, huh? I see…

— Morgana…? — Ren called.

— Let's say all you have told us is true, how can you be so sure Ren is the one with a role?

— Weren't sure until Ren has told us about his power.

— What!? Wait, why did you guys talk about it?

— Remember my powers are special, somehow? It seems Chief Nick and Chief Miles possess the same powers as me.

— They are Wild Cards!? — Morgana exclaimed. — Now that you mentioned it… That makes sense…

— Because…? — Ren asked.

— They look like you sometimes.

— Like an idiot?

— The mere fact we look like an idiot is a requisite to being a Wild Card? — Miles asked slightly indignantly, then he sighed. — On second thought, I think you might have a point. We're a bunch of idiots sometimes.

— Not that. I mean, you two look like you have incredible power, a hidden power that no one possesses… I can sense that from you two. — Morgana said.

— Is that so? I never expected that from you Mona… — Ren said.

— Heh, Heh! I may be a thief, but I'm also a refined gentleman. And even I can see something special about you all. You are different from the others. I can see that.

— I see… Well, we talked about our powers but we couldn't reach an answer for the reason Ren was chosen.

— So, even you two don't know, huh?

— No. Only the chosen one knows, but that comes at a specific time. — Miles said.

— If that's the case, why do you…?

— Because we can't interfere in Ren's mission. It's an unspoken rule, but a vital rule nonetheless. All we can do is support him the best we can, and aid him as possible. Interfere in his mission can result in ruin.

— Ruin… — Ren said, remembering Igor's words.

— I see… So, you guys simply can't interfere, huh…?

— Yeah, but we can aid. That's why we're here.

— What do you mean?

— Morgana, do you remember why Ren is here in Tokyo, right?

— Of course, I remember! It's because of his probation, right?

— Correct. But, it doesn't strike you as odd the fact of how things went for him?

— Well, yeah! It does! It was almost like…

— Almost like…

Morgana gasped in surprise as he turned to Ren.

— You're saying…?!

— We are not sure about it, but there is a chance. All we can do is aid him, as we said before. — Miles said with some dismay.

— So, there's a chance, huh…?

— Yes, it appears so.

— Well then, you can count on me!

— Morgana…

— I may not know what Ren's mission is, but I'll do everything in my power to aid him as well! As a thief, and as a friend.

— That's the spirit, Morgana! Also, you can count on us, Ren.

— Yes. As much as we can't interfere in your mission, we still can aid you as we said before. You can be with us. Not only in court, but in your life as well. — Phoenix said determinedly.

— Thank you two.

"I feel my bond with my mentors growing deeper."

Ren felt his power growing as his bond with Phoenix and Miles grew deeper. Morgana yawned tiredly as looked at Ren and his mentors.

— Well, I'm beat! I need to rest. And you as well, Ren. You have to sleep early for tomorrow.

— I know. You don't need to remind me.

— He's your secretary? I can see why you have become so punctual lately. — Miles teased with a sly grin.

— Ha, ha. Very funny, Chief Miles. — Ren replied annoyed. — He's my pet.

— I'm not a pet! I'm Morgana, a gentleman thief.

— Right… Tell me something… What defines someone who looks like a cat, lives in the house of someone, and eats his food for free? — Ren asked.

— A… A pet… — Morgana admitted.

— Exactly. Besides… If you are really my secretary, I have to pay you up. And it's odd for me to pay you up.

— Don't worry. I'll accept fat tuna as my payment for my services!

— You little… You're taking advantage of me in this situation!? — Ren asked indignantly.

— Well, I'm your secretary after all, so I need some payment, isn't that right?

— If that's the case… Then you should live outside. Since you're so independent, you can afford to live alone, right? — Ren asked with a sly grin, with a point of teasing.

— What!? H-Hey… You're not serious… Are you…?

Ren smiled and nodded his head in affirmation.

— Why not? You're my secretary, right?

— Nope! I'm not! I'm just… A cat…

Ren laughed.

— I'm just kidding. Of course, I won't throw you out.

Phoenix and Miles laughed and Morgana growled in anger and jumped in irritation.

— Hey! That's not funny! — Morgana exclaimed, irritated.

— Sorry! Sorry! — Both the lawyers said.

— Morgana, relax. I was only teasing you.

— Don't do that ever again! — Morgana said angrily.

— Relax… Sheesh… I don't believe you're so upset with some teasing.

— That went way too far! Seriously though, you can't say those things out of the blue!

"Am I so convincing…? Or is it just because I kept a serious teasing face?" Ren thought worriedly, thinking about it.

— If you're asking yourself, we dare to say it's both. — Phoenix and Miles said in unison. — And before you ask. No, you didn't show it, it's just obvious you thought that.

— Really? What are you guys? The X-Men? — Ren asked with an edging tone of sarcasm.

— Yeah, we are. I'm Professor X and Miles is Magneto. — Phoenix replied in the same tone.

— Why Am I always becoming Magneto? Is it just because of my clothes? — Miles asked in dismay.

— Yeah, right. And I am the Amazing Spiderman! — Ren retorted.

— Of course, you are. After all, you're always doing those flips of yours…

— Really!? Can you do a backflip? — Morgana asked with his eyes shining in excitement.

— No. I will not do a backflip, especially here! Out of question! — Ren said with annoyance.

— Awww… You're no fun, you know that? — The supernatural cat replied.

— Yes, I know… By the way, how's Trucy? — Ren asked.

— She's fine. She already made everyone in Kosei High fall for her charms. — Phoenix said with a proud smile.

— Well, I expected that with a girl like her. Even me… Although now…

— Oh, did you find someone special? — Miles teased with a sly smile.

— Yeah, I do. And no, it's not Ann, so relax Morgana. — Ren said, teasing the cat.

— Phew… Hey! That was a secret! — Morgana exclaimed.

"Yeah, right…" The three lawyers thought annoyed.

— So, who is it? — Phoenix asked genuinely curious.

— Well… For now, it is a secret. I don't want to say it yet.

— Right Romeo. It wasn't like she knew it yet…

— Like Ann?

Morgana gasped shocked and jumped again.

— Well, if you two wanna know, Ren likes an older woman!

— Morgana! — Ren hissed, irritated.

— Oh, an older woman, huh…? — Miles teased.

— She's not your teacher, right? — Phoenix asked, teasing as well.

— No! She's not! Why do… Nope. I'm not saying anything more.

— I heard she's…

— Morgana, say anything and I will not buy you tuna! — Ren threatened.

— Gah! Okay, okay! I'lll stay quiet! — Morgana said afraid. — Geez… Why so much secrecy with them? It's not like they won't know someday…

— I know, but I don't have anything with her yet, and I don't know if I really like her.

— You like her. — Phoenix and Miles said in unison.

— What…? — Ren said surprised, feeling really uncomfortable.

— Look at you. You usually don't talk about women, and when you talk, you barely react about it. We've never seen you reacting like that before. — Miles pointed.

— Besides, no other woman made you blush like that. Whoever she is, she caused you a strong impression.

— For sure she did… — Ren commented low, but Phoenix and Miles managed to hear him.

— See? Even you agree with us…

— Fine, fine… She definitely called my attention. Why wouldn't she? I have never seen a woman like her before. So…

— Beautiful?

— Cute?

— Unique. She's more than beautiful. She's gorgeous. And she's cute… In her own way, but she is.

— And you never comment about a woman like that… — Miles noted.

— Yeah, I know.

— Neither say such things about a woman you like…

— I know, I know… But…

— But?

— She's… Like me… Before I met you two…

Both Phoenix and Miles frowned, looking worriedly at their apprentice.

— Well, if that's the case… You should aid her. Help her the best you can.

— I am helping her already. I'm working as her assistant.

— Is nothing dangerous, right?

— Right…

— Ren…

— Don't worry about it. It's nothing dangerous, I can assure you two. Besides, I'm giving her legal assistance.

— Is that so? I see… By the way, Ren, we want you to accompany us to our trials. We think it might be good for you.

— Okay, but I need to tell Sojiro about it.

— We talked with him. He allowed us to take you with us. The real issue is… Your school…

— I think you should go.

— Why?

— I believe… Kobayakawa needs a lesson. A good lesson, if you two catch my meaning.

— Hm… Do you think he's up to something…? — Phoenix asked.

— It appears so. Niijima-san is keeping an eye on me, and somehow I know it's him. — Ren explained.

— Niijima? You meant Sae's little sister, Makoto Niijima, right?

— Yes.

— Prosecutor Niijima has a sister? — Miles asked, surprised.

— Yes. I thought you knew about it. — Phoenix commented.

— I think I've forgotten. — Miles said in a whispering tone.

— So, he's putting Makoto in danger, huh…? — Phoenix asked. — We'll have a talk with him.

— Thanks.

— No prob! Oh, we're going tomorrow to your school. Is that okay?

— No problem. Tomorrow then. — Ren said.

— Okay, we need to go now. We need to wake up early tomorrow. — Miles said, getting up from his chair.

— Yeah, we have to deal with that case as well. — Phoenix said getting up as well.

— Okay. I'll lock up the store.

Phoenix and Miles went to the entrance and extended their hands to Ren, who gave a handshake to both.

— Bye Ren, see you soon. — Both Phoenix and Miles said.

— Bye Chief Nick and Chief Miles. — Ren said his farewells to his mentors. Ren closed the door and looked at Morgana.

— Sorry for keeping this a secret. — Ren said.

— It's okay. Besides, I think I don't want to know for the time being. — Morgana replied. — I mean, it might be damaging if I knew about it, right?

— Yes. But I trust you.

— Do you trust your mentors?

Ren nodded in affirmation and walked towards the stairs.

— Well, we should go to sleep. We need to rest for tomorrow. — Ren said, going upstairs.

— Okay.

— And Mona.

— Yes?

— I'll buy you some tuna later, got it?

— Got it! — Morgana exclaimed happily.

At the same time, Phoenix walked with Miles back to the street. Phoenix looked at the sky, lost in his thoughts.

— Are you alright, Wright? — Edgeworth asked.

— Yes, I am. Just thinking about Ren.

— Worried about him, huh?

— Why shouldn't I? He's our apprentice after all.

— You don't want another Dahlia Hawthorne's incident to happen, don't you?

Phoenix sighed.

— Yes. I know how it is to be disappointed with a person, especially being used. I just hope he's really okay.

— He is. Besides, I'm sure he's not in trouble. Ren can take care of himself.

— I know. But I confess I'm curious about that woman myself.

— I'm curious as well. I mean, is not every day we see Ren acting out of his cool behavior.

— Yeah… — Phoenix heard his phone ring and he saw a message. He smiled at the message.

— Message from your fiancé? — Miles teased.

— Yes, it is. She sent me a cute message.

— You complained about Ren, but you're no better than him.

— Said the one who is a simp with your own fiancé as well.

— True. Guilty as charged…

Phoenix sighed in disappointment.

— Hah. Are we that bad? — Phoenix asked.

— Considering our actual situation, not much. — Miles admitted. — But honestly, I really love my fiancé. I can't imagine my life without her…

— Me either… I mean, being in love is an incredible thing.

— Yeah… I actually worried as well for Ren, but I know he can handle this by himself.

— I hope so… — Phoenix said, calling a taxi. — Well, I need to go now. If you need anything, call me.

— Okay but, are you sure you don't want me to give you a ride? The fee just to take you home at this hour will be astronomical.

— It's okay, besides I need some time alone. I think we have to think carefully about the next step in our mission.

— I agree.

A taxi stopped in front of Phoenix and he went in. Phoenix lift down the door window and said:

— Miles, I think it's time for us to act. — Phoenix said with a serious frown.

— See you later, Wright.

Phoenix gave the taxi cab the directions and Miles walked to his car which was parked. He unlocked his car and went in. After starting the car, he went back to the apartment he rented in the Ginza district. Miles sighed as he entered his flat and fell on the sofa, feeling the stress and the tiredness take over his body, and slowly start to dissipate from his body. He felt a pair of hands holding his head gently, caressing his head.

— Did you have a bad day? — The person asked. Definitely a feminine voice. Miles smiled.

— More like a tough day. It wasn't bad. We talked with Ren today.

— I see… Did he say anything?

— If his information and his intuition are correct, as it always is, we came to Japan at the right time.

— So, everything is running on its own accord.

— It seems like it.

— I do hope you can aid him. I feel some disturbance at that place… He can't trust no one in there.

— I agree. Honestly, I may not have access there anymore, but the mere fact you don't have access anymore is odd, since you're a resident of that place. It's odd that you can't access it.

— Maybe someone is blocking my path toward my former home as well. But, oddly, the fact is aside from the power behind the barrier, there is a familiar power blocking my path as well. Whoever who is, that resident is avoiding something to get out of that place.

— I don't know how I can help you with this matter. I'm sorry I can't be of much help.

— Don't worry about it. I'm sure you can help your apprentice to find out the truth.

— I hope so…

Miles felt the woman's hands running over the scalp of his head, and he purred happily with that. She smiled and leaned closer to his ear, saying.

— By the way, it's rude to keep a lady waiting. Especially your future wife.

Miles smiled and tsked, faking arrogance.

— My dear future Mrs. Edgeworth… As you may know, I never let a lady wait… Especially you.

— Is that so…? Then prove it.

Miles held her hands and kissed both carefully. He stood up and turned to her, kissing the woman. He felt her reciprocating the kiss and after a brief moment which looked like hours, they split up.

— Well, well… You are a good kisser, as always.

— Only good? — He teased.

— Excellent, my beloved lover. You know I'm just teasing you. But seriously, you're great.

— Had a tense day?

— Yes. Being your secretary is not easy, you know?

— I know. By the way, we have to visit Ren's school tomorrow. We have some business to attend to.

— I see. Well, I'll reschedule…

Miles walked around and grabbed the woman by her waist, hugging her.

— You can do this tomorrow. Let's stay together tonight.

— Are you inviting me to sleep with you? — She teased.

— Why not? You're my fiancé after all, and before you ask I miss you lately.

— We work together every single day.

— You know what I meant. — He said, looking at her with an expectant look. A very expectant look. She smiled.

— Well, well, I don't want to make my Miles stay alone this night. So, what do you say? We spend some quality time together and after that, we cuddle together. What do you think about it? — The woman asked. Miles gave the smile he only uses in court.

— I'm pleased to do so.

"That will be a good night together." The Chief Prosecutor thought as we went to the bedroom with his fiancé. "Although I can't stop worrying about what will happen now. I can only hope everything will go well."

With those thoughts, Miles and the woman went into the bedroom and spent a good time together.

May, 26. Thursday.

Aoyama-Itchome District. Shujin Academy.

Morning.

After answering Kawakami's question, Ren turned his attention back to Kawakami's class. She gave the class a quick task before resuming her class.

— Well then class, we're about to…

She was about to start a new explanation when someone knocked on the door. Kawakami looked surprised that someone had interrupted her class and promptly went to the door and opened, revealing an elegant businesswoman, dressed in blue. Her amber eyes searched around the entire classroom, looking for someone.

— Yes, can I help you? — Kawakami asked.

— Yes you can, Ms.…?

— Kawakami. Sadayo Kawakami.

— Ms. Kawakami, I'm looking for a student. Mr. Ren Amamiya. Is he in this classroom?

Everyone turned incredulously at Ren, on the verge to point at him.

— Yes, he is as you can see, Ms.…?

— Margaret. You can call me Margaret. — Margaret replied in a flatly, but serene tone. — I'm Mr. Edgeworth's secretary. I'm here under his orders to call him to the Principal's Office. Also to call you as well.

— Me?! — Kawakami exclaimed, surprised.

— Yes. As his homeroom teacher, you have been called as well.

— I see… Mr. Amamiya, if you can accompany me…

— Of course. — Ren said, getting up from his chair and going to the Principal's Office with Kawakami and Margaret. He looked at Margaret and promptly remembered Caroline and Justine. He knew her for some time, but only now he could see the resemblance between the woman and the twin maidens. Ren wondered if there is a relation between his mentor's secretary and the twins when he found himself already in the Principal's Office. Ren took a deep breath before entering the place. Inside the room, Phoenix and Miles were there, waiting for him. Kobayakawa looked at him and gave a deadly glance.

— Amamiya, I don't know what you have done, but…

— He has done nothing, Mr. Kobayakawa. — Phoenix said with a reassuring tone.

— Actually, we're here to talk with you. We have a request. — Miles replied.

— And what is it? — Kobayakawa asked.

— We want Mr. Amamiya to accompany us due to his training and his… his probation. As you may know, we still need to keep his studies about the legal system. — Phoenix said in a flat tone.

— Is that so…? Well, I don't have a reason to allow it, however since you two come here to make such a request, I don't have a reason to refuse either. As long as he keeps his grades high and behaves himself, I will allow him to accompany you.

— Very well. Ms. Kawakami. — Miles called.

— Yes, Mr. Edgeworth? — Kawakami asked, surprised.

— Could you please talk with the teachers about Ren's situation? We need all of them to be aware of our request.

— O-Of course…!

— Margaret, please check Ren's schedule and remember to call him.

— Yes, Mr. Edgeworth. — Margaret said, taking notes on her agenda.

— Mr. Kobayakawa, we're here to assure everything is going well with our apprentice. We heard from him that a teacher has spread his situation onto the internet.

— So, if we heard anything involving him, or any of your students, you better be prepared for the lawsuit we have prepared for you. — Phoenix said with a serious face. — Because we are almost convinced you knew about the situation of Suguru Kamoshida.

— W-Well… I… was coarsen by him… He made our volleyball team go to nationals… And…

— Even if that's the case, that doesn't excuse you from the responsibility for what happened with Ms. Suzui. If we heard you put any of your students in danger again, I'll make you pay, by myself. I'll do anything and everything in my power to make you pay, understand? — Phoenix asked.

— U-Understood. — Kobayakawa said with some irritation in his voice.

— Ms. Kawakami. We want to have a particular talk with you as well. If you excuse us… — Miles said exiting the room, followed by Margaret.

— Ren, we should go now. — Phoenix said, holding his shoulder.

— Got it. Kawakami-sensei, I'll go back to my classroom. If you excuse me. — Ren said leaving the office as well.

— Okay. I need to go now, Mr. Kobayakawa. Mr. Wright. — Kawakami said, bowing slightly at Phoenix and leaving the office. Phoenix stared at Kobayakawa for a moment, waiting for an answer from the heavily bulged man.

— Mr. Wright, I can assure you the incidents in my school are nothing you should worry about.

— That is something I will determine. Besides, I'm keeping an eye on you. Mark my words.

Phoenix exited the room and Kobayakawa sighed in frustration.

— Damn those lawyers… And they simply can't get rid of them… For now, I need to keep an eye on Amamiya… For now.

Kawakami was looking at Edgeworth, Phoenix, and Ren talking to each other in a low voice, carefully staying at a respectful distance from them. She looked at Margaret, admiring the uncanny beauty of the woman. If she could compare Margaret to any beautiful woman she knew, her beauty clearly surpasses any woman she knows. Her exquisite and exotic beauty and her professional composure made Kawakami feel intimidated by Margaret's presence.

— Pardon me, but what time is it? — She asked.

— 11 AM. — Margaret replied, seeing the time on her wristwatch. — Sadayo Kawakami, correct?

— Yes.

— How is your professional relationship with Mr. Amamiya? — Margaret asked.

— Wh-What!?

— I asked you about your professional relationship with Mr. Amamiya.

— F-Fine, I guess.

— I guess? — Margaret asked, and Kawakami could swear she saw a dangerous glint in the platinum-haired woman's eyes.

— I mean, he possesses good behavior, he doesn't give me and the teachers any problems… Except for Kamoshida's trial. He acted… Well, it doesn't matter. He was only doing his job there, I know that, but I never saw him act like that.

— People tend to say Mr. Amamiya could be a little rude towards a few people in court, but he is usually respectful towards everyone. — Margaret said.

— That's true. But Mr. Ushimaru didn't react well to the fact that Amamiya-kun is an attorney. He complained with all the staff about it.

— Quite understandable, since Mr. Amamiya is too young. He became an attorney before he became seventeen.

— He what!? — Kawakami exclaimed, surprised. I thought…

— Well, Mr. Amamiya is a hardworking individual. He managed to pass the Bar exam with only a month of preparation. Such a feat is almost impossible for anyone on average but Ren has proven he's above average since he's passed the Bar exam and claimed his attorney's badge. Needless to say, he's quick to catch up on things.

— True. He's a good student. He's smart, one of the smartest students I have. Not only that, he did well in his exams but he could be better.

— Better not say that aloud, or Mr. Amamiya might hear you. He's quite exigent with himself.

— Really? I mean, he looks like an ordinary teenager to me. I mean… He sounds normal to me. A teenager with not much worry about the world.

— As much as you may be right in some aspects, it's actually the contrary. Mr. Amamiya is concerned by the ways this country has taken.

— I never thought he would be so into politics.

— Yes, although he doesn't want to become a politician himself. He's happy to be a defense attorney.

— I see… Well, I do have high expectations from him, and I hope he can surpass them.

— I do expect he can attend and surpass your expectations.

Ren was watching Kawakami and Margaret talking and glanced back at his mentors.

— As I was saying, we'd expect you to come with us to the trial at least. You don't need to go to the investigation.

— That's good to know, since I need to attend the classes and improve my grades. — Ren said calmly as ever.

— I do agree. You simply can't afford to lose classes. Kobayakawa will use any excuse to expel you. — Miles said.

— And we need to keep an eye on him. I don't trust him one single bit. — Phoenix said with a serious frown.

— I agree with you. I can't afford to get expelled from Shujin, and I don't trust Kobayakawa as well. — Ren said with a serious frown as well. — So, any progress with that?

— Not much. We haven't had much progress with our investigations.

— I see… Well, I'll investigate on my own, and I'll see if I can find anything.

— Got it. Be careful Ren. We can't afford to lose you.

— I know. I will be careful. — Ren said as he went back to the classroom. — Call me anytime if you two need anything.

— We will.

Ren went back to the classroom and Kawakami went after Ren, looking carefully at him. She apologized to the class and explained it was only a simple meeting to check Ren's situation. After that, the class went normally.

Shujin Academy. Courtyard.

Lunchtime.

— Hey, there you are! — Ryuji said seeing Ren finishing his lunch. — I need your help with something!

— Sure. What is it? — Ren asked walking to the trash can and disposing of his garbage. Back to his bench, he saw Ryuji looking around to check if anyone was wandering close. After confirming no one was there, he showed a flyer.

— I found this flier stuffed in my mailbox.

— What is that flier anyway? — Ren asked.

— Housekeeping service! It says that a cute maid will do anything for you. A maid, dude! A MAID! A maid who'll do ANYTHING for us! Right? Right…!?

— Alright, I'll bite. What do you want me to do?

— …You're a guy, right? You know what I mean! Let's give it a try. Yeah? Yeah!

— Do YOU think THAT will be a good idea? — Ren asked, knowing that will lead to.

— Why not? It'll be fine. Relax.

— Okay… — Ren said even more unsure.

— Besides, there's nothing to worry about.

— And? What is your plan? — Ren asked.

— Luckily, some guy on my floor just moved out so there's a vacant apartment in my complex. The key is behind the mailbox, so we can get it anytime. The landlord seriously doesn't care. The place is all set, so…

— Hey, I heard that!

Mishima approached both Ren and Ryuji, smiling at them.

— What the hell!?

— Why are you surprised? You practically yelled to everyone to hear. — Ren said facepalming himself.

"Great, now Mishima is here too. What else could happen now? Ms. Niijima appearing out of nowhere too and threatening us?" Ren thought sarcastically.

— Um, can I, uh… Get in on this? — Mishima asked sheepishly and slightly embarrassed, after realizing his sudden outburst. Ryuji's smile widened in amusement.

— Oh-ho! You mean you're into this kinda stuff? Well, okay!

"WTF!? Ryuji! It's not time to get excited!" Ren thought in despair.

— I-I'm not into it! It's just for research! — Mishima replied, flabbergasted, surprised by Ryuji's comment.

— Right… — Ren murmured.

— I'm serious! What does it mean that they'll do "anything"? And do the maids look exactly as they're advertised? We need to determine whether or not this company just pretends to offer housekeeping services! — Mishima said with a serious frown.

— Yeah… Just tell the truth, you want a maid to serve you. — Ren said, crossing his arms, with a confident smirk on his face.

— I… I… Just want to punish the bad guys! And in order to do that, I have to see it with my own eyes!

"Riiiiight… As if I will believe in you buddy."

— Yeah, we gotta see it with our own eyes! Every little detail…

"Yes, shout louder Ryuji! I don't think Ms. Niijima and the teachers heard you." Ren thought, sweating nervously but keeping his cool behavior.

— So… When? — Ren asked.

— We'll hafta do this at night, so let us know when you're ready. — Ryuji said.

— Okay… "I didn't agree with any of this! …Now I know how Chief Nick feels when someone decides things for you…" Ren thought in dismay.

— So, what's the code name for this operation…? — Mishima asked.

— Err… — Both Ryuji and Ren said unsure.

"Since when has this become an operation!?"

— Since we'll be watching them, it should be something like… "Operation Maidwatch"! — Mishima said with a wide grin.

— Nice! I like that! — Ryuji said with a wide grin as well.

"Oh no…"

Kichijoji District. Inokashira Park.

After School.

Ren was wandering around the Inokashira Park with Ann, helping her with her training to become stronger.

— Man, big open places like this are great! — Ann commented smiling, looking at the beautiful scenario she and Ren were in. — I think my training's going to go super well, today! So…, remember how I said before that I want to strengthen my heart?

— Yes, I remember quite well. — Ren replied.

— Well, I came up with a way to do it!

— You're amazing to come up with an idea. So what is it?

— *giggle*. I got this. I think having a strong heart means you don't let anything get under your skin, right?

— I'm following along.

— So basically, I want you to say stuff to me, and I'll try not to get fazed by it!

— Do you think that is a good idea? — Ren asked unsurely.

— Yeah! Come on!

— Okay, I'll get along with you. What kind of stuff do I need to say to you?

Ann laughed at Ren's question.

— We've already started! I won't let my hesitation shake me!

"She wasn't very clear…" Ren thought in dismay. "Guess I should say anything to her…"

— C'mon, hit me with your best shot!

"Hmm… That's not an everyday opportunity…" Ren thought with a mental malicious smile.

— You're… unique. — Ren said with a straight face.

— Yeah, yeah, and? — Ann asked.

— You're a hard worker. — Ren said lifting up and walking towards Ann,

— Uh-hum, uh-hum! What else?

— I love you. — Ren said, touching her chin, and rubbing it gently with his thumb.

— What!?

Ren laughed, taking a step back and Ann punched his arm in anger.

— What wasn't funny! — She said with a furious frown.

— Sorry. I was just teasing you. — Ren replied, massaging his arm.

— Go tease someone else! — Ann said, pouting.

— Okay, okay, you win. I don't have any ideas of how to respond to you.

— You're giving up? That means I win! — Ann said happily as she waved her fist in celebration, then she stopped celebrating and became thoughtful, as she was about to realize something. — Wait… is this how the game is supposed to go? — She asked confused.

"I knew she didn't know what she was doing…" Ren thought, resisting the urge to facepalm himself.

— Oh well. On to round two! — Ann said determined and she crouched, covering her ears. — Bring it on! And no teasing! — She said with a determined face.

— Hey, listen to me. I think…

"Your idea sucks." Ren completed the phrase mentally, not wanting to hurt the girl's feelings. He stood quietly as she looked at him, seeing him sheepishly running his hand on the back of his neck.

— You know… I kinda feel like this won't make our Personas stronger. — Ann said, standing up on her feet once again.

— You finally get it. — Ren said with a straight face.

— Yeah, you're right… Wait… Something's not right…

"You think?" Ren thought sarcastically, keeping that comment to himself. Then Ann's phone rang. She took her phone and she saw she had received a message. She promptly started to read it.

— Oh, sorry. I just got an email from my agency.

— Is it okay?

— Let's see… The next shoot is… really far. Wait, what's this at the end? — Ann asked, confused, reading the message again.

— What is it? — Ren asked confused.

— Nothing to worry about. It's just a notice saying to pay extra attention to the time and place they tell you. Apparently, some models haven't been showing up at all lately. Then they asked why they didn't come, and the models all say they heard there was a change in the schedule.

— That's weird… — Ren commented.

— Yeah. It sounds like shoots have been really hectic with all the scrambling they've had to do for substitutes.

— And has that happened to you? — Ren asked.

— No, I haven't missed a single shoot so far.

— Still, better be extra careful. That might be some prank or something. — Ren warned.

— I know. I don't want that to happen to me. I can only imagine the confusion. — Ann confessed. — It probably really confuses the staff to see a sub showing up too. Hopefully, it doesn't happen to me… Though actually, my first modeling gig was as a sub.

— I didn't know that. — Ren admitted. — Can you tell me more about it?

— Of course. That was back when I was still in Finland. My parents didn't have enough models for the event.

— That's nice to hear… Wait a second. Your parents made the event?

— Oh, haven't I told you? My parents are both fashion designers who put on some seriously extravagant shows. They jump from country to country, so I only see them for half of the year. Maybe less these days.

— I see… That's impressive! — Ren said, genuinely surprised.

— Isn't it?

— I bet it's good to have such freedom.

— Yeah, I guess I can afford to be pretty relaxed these days. Plus it would probably be tough being a phantom thief with my parents around, don't you think? — Ann said.

— I agree, although I need to admit it's truly surprising to see you are too independent.

— Yeah… It was rough when I was little though… It was just me and our live caretaker. I didn't have any friends…

— I see… What about Shiho and Ryuji? — Ren asked.

— Well… I met them later, and I think that's a story for another time… Wow, that got dark fast… Ahahahaha…

— True.

— Honestly, when I'm modeling… it almost feels like I'm connecting with my parents somehow. It's a nice hobby to have… but I don't think I'd want to make a living out of it. After all, that's where Kamoshida first spotted me… and that's how our class started those rumors. — Ann admitted. — Besides the Phantom Thieves are more important to me right now. Nobody can be my substitute there… That's why I need to get stronger!

— I see… Well, I'm glad you've become honest with me.

"I can sense a heightened motivation from Ann."

Ren felt his power growing as his bonds with Ann deepened. After that Ann smiled at Ren and commented showing a picture of a female thief on her phone:

— You know, when I was little, I used to watch this anime where the main villain was this female thief. She'd lose to the hero every time, but I always thought she was cool.

— That's a classic.

— Yeah! She wasn't really a "good" person per se. But she was beautiful, strong, sincere, and even sexy. She always said whatever she wanted, did whatever she wanted… She knew what justice was for her. I… wanted to grow up to be just like her someday.

— I see…

— I hope I'm getting closer now if only just a little bit.

— I hope I'm being helpful to you with that.

— Yes, you are. — Ann checked the time on her phone. — Welp, it's getting late. It's for me to go.

— I see…

— Well, see you later.

— See you later.

Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.

After School.

Ren arrived at Leblanc and he was ready to get in when he received a call, which he promptly answered.

— Hello, Amamiya speaking.

— Heeey, it's me. Thank you for coming with me today!

— No problem, Ann! So, how was your walk back home?

— So, after we met up, I tried doing some runway walks on the way home. Like how a cool, sexy woman would walk. Then some girl who was watching me nearby started to copy me and runway-walk with me! She had to see me, right? Do you think she thought I was cool…?

— Could be. Children usually copy people they think admire.

— *giggle* It's almost enough to make me blush, kind of.

Then Ann sighed.

— What's wrong…? — Ren asked.

— To be honest, I kinda feel bad for her. She has no idea that the real me is a human disaster.

— Hey, don't say that. You are an incredible girl, who faced several things and won. Put more faith in yourself. — Ren said, motivating Ann.

— Thanks. Still, I guess I still got a long way to go. I'm not giving up. I made a decision that I'm going to get stronger, so I need to overcome any obstacles. — Ann said determinedly.

— That's the spirit. Keep going. I'll help you.

— Thanks. And thanks for hearing me out! Okay, bye!

— Bye.

Ann ended the call and Ren smiled.

— She and Ryuji are quite the characters… — He said.

— What do you mean? — Morgana asked.

— Nothing. Just nothing… — Ren said while he went inside the café. He heard his phone ring again and he saw a message from Mishima.

Hey, didn't you forget, did you? You know about the flier!

Ren sighed annoyed as he went upstairs.

"Of course, they didn't forget that…" Ren thought in dismay.

No, I haven't. — Ren replied.

Good. We need to look into the truth behind that housekeeping service. I'm over at Central Street right now, so come talk to me if you're interested. — Mishima said.

— Hey, looks like Mishima is calling us. Are you going to meet him? — Morgana asked.

— Perhaps. — Ren said while changing his clothes. After that, he went down and Sojiro looked at him with a smirk.

— Hey kid. — Sojiro said.

— Sup. — Ren said.

— Guess that one. — Sojiro said while looking at the TV.

— I will ask once again: Confessions of a crime, like that one we saw that lecher Mr. Kamoshida gave, has this old appellation: A. "Queen" of the evidence. B. "Jewel" of the evidence.

— A. Queen. — Ren replied.

— The correct answer is: A; "queen"! Yes, that's a famous expression in the field of law. Confessions are very powerful evidence—People used even resort to torture to get them. That's a high school prodigy for you. Today, forcing a confession is forbidden under law, and…

— It's against Human rights and it's against Japan's actual constitution itself. — Ren completed.

— Wow, kid. You're good. — Sojiro said, impressed.

— I have to. It's good to see I'm not too rusty.

— Where are you going to?

— I'm going to Shibuya to meet some friends. — Ren said while answering the crosswords puzzle. — There is any problem with that? — Ren asked.

— No, but you better come back early, got that? — Sojiro said with a serious frown.

— Yes, I got it. — Ren said, exiting Leblanc.

Shibuya District. Central Street.

Evening.

— Oh, hey Amamiya. — Mishima said, seeing Ren approach him.

— Hey. How's it going? — Ren asked.

— Good. How about you?

— I'm good too.

— I heard the pollen is really bad this year… Are you okay, Amamiya?

— I'm good. I'm not allergic to pollen.

— Good. You'd seriously look like a criminal if you had one of those allergy masks to go along with your cool glasses!

— Really? — Ren asked in dismay.

— Sorry. So, we're executing Operation Maidwatch tonight for sure?

"Hm… Why do I have a bad feeling about this…?" Ren thought worriedly, then he shook his head. "Probably imagining things…"

— Okay. "Why not? In the worst-case scenario, we'll only face someone truly angry with us…" — Ren said.

— Sweet! I've been waiting for this!

"Of course you are…" Ren thought disappointed.

— …Wait, you already changed out of your uniform!? — Mishima asked, surprised.

— Of course I did. It'll raise suspicion if I wander around this time with my school gear.

— True. I guess that's a pretty good idea actually… Hey, we're meeting over at Sakamoto's place, right? — Mishima asked and Ren nodded in affirmation. — Let's stop by mine beforehand, so I can change too.

Apartment Complex. Vacant apartment.

Evening.

Ren and Mishima arrived at the apartment complex and both met with Ryuji. They went into the vacant apartment. There, Ren checked the time once again.

— S-So… we're really gonna do this, huh…? You think it'll be okay?

"Are you already reconsidering!?" Ren thought in dismay. "Dammit, I can't shake off this feeling that something bad will happen.

— Hey, dude. Operation Maidwatch, bro! — Ryuji said, showing the flier once again.

— Y-Yeah… Operation Maidwatch.

— Do you really think that's a good idea? What if it turns out to be sketchy? — Ren asked worriedly.

— Chill, dude. If it turns out to be sketchy, we can just bail. The apartment's vacant, so it's not like we're messing with anyone's home.

— That's a great plan coming from you. You truly are a genius sometimes. — Ren commented.

— Yeah, yeah, I know!

— To think… Sakamoto has a brain. — Mishima commented, truly surprised.

"Ryuji's not that dumb… He may be an idiot, but he's clearly not dumb." Ren thought.

— But if that is the case, then… — Mishima said.

— Then… — Ryuji said with a smile.

— Yep!

— Sorry, but I'm lost here. Then what? — Ren asked, confused.

— Then we can do anything without anyone disturbing us! — Ryuji said with his grin widening even more. — Okay, give 'em a call.

— Why me? — Ren murmured while he took the flier from Ryuji and made the call.

— Hello! Thank you for calling! This is Victoria's Housekeeping!

— They answered! — Mishima muttered excitedly. Ryuji shushed him.

— Hello, I want to request your services. — Ren said.

— I take it that you're interested in our services, then?

— S-Services? — Mishima whispered-exclaimed. Ren waved his finger to silence him.

— Yes, I do. — Ren replied calmly.

— I see. Is there anyone, in particular, you'd like to request? — The voice on the other side of the call asked.

— Err…

— A-Anyone we want to request!? What should we do, Renren? — Ryuji asked, almost shouting. Ren made a sign with his hand to Ryuji to stay quiet.

— Actually, I don't have a preference. You can send anyone. — Ren said.

— Very well, let's see…

Silence prevailed as the teenagers stood quiet, all of them anxious about the situation, especially Ren.

— We have a maid available in… 20 minutes! May I ask for the address? — The employer asked.

— Well the address is…

Ren gave the address and discussed the other details before ending the call.

— Thank you. Bye.

— Shit… This is really happening… — Ryuji said in disbelief.

— A "maid" service… — Mishima said in disbelief as well. — Hey… What should we have her do? I was thinking we should start with some cooking… Of course, I wouldn't mind some of the other services either…

— Me too. — Ryuji said.

— …Should we hold a strategy meeting to discuss this?

— They said 20 minutes, right? Ugh… I gotta use the bathroom… — Ryuji said going to the bathroom. Ren enjoyed that time talking with Mishima. Several minutes later, Ryuji came back and sighed with relief.

— I-It's almost time… You were there for a while… Are you okay? Hey, did you wash your hands? — Mishima asked. Ryuji stood quiet for a moment, not replying to the blueish-haired boy.

— Hm? What? Who? Me? — Ryuji said after he snapped out of his thoughts.

— Y-You're really nervous. — Mishima said, laughing nervously. Then something popped into Mishima's mind. — Wait… Are high school students even allowed to use this type of service? Ren, do you know it?

— Eh? Me? Well… There's nothing in the flier saying it is against the law, so…

— Huh? What do you mean by that? — Ryuji asked.

— Hey, what do you mean by "Huh? What do you mean by that?"? You should've researched it! — Mishima said, slightly irritated and annoyed. — What if they find out who we are!? — Mishima said freaking out.

— H-How should I know!? But why would how old you matter when it comes to housekeeping? — Ryuji retorted.

— We would've been screwed if your number had been shown up on the caller ID. — Mishima said.

— And you two only remember it now!? — Ren exclaimed nervously. He scratched his hair nervously.

The teenagers started to argue, pointing at each other, and exclaiming furiously when someone pressed the doorbell. They stopped to argue, turning their heads in the door direction.

— Good evening… I'm from the housekeeping service. — The maid announced.

— What!? Already!? — Mishima exclaimed and he checked his phone. — She's five minutes early!

— Shit… — Ryuji cursed.

— What do we do? I'm not mentally prepared!

— Me either! — Ryuji exclaimed nervously as well.

— Calm down you two…! — Ren said, trying to keep his cool as well.

— Oh, the door's unlocked…? — The maid said surprised. — Uh, may I come in…?

Both Ryuji and Mishima turned to Ren nervously and saw the balcony door.

— I-I can't do this! My stomach's actin' up! And my hands are all sweaty!

— M-Me too…

— W-What!? — Ren exclaimed. — You can't back down like this!

— Sorry dude, but we can't. You handle the rest… And don't let her find out you're a high school student.

— W-Wait…

— I've got your back! Just… from your way back! Like, from the balcony!

— Y-Yeah! We're on the balcony.

— H-Hey!

Ryuji and Mishima went to the balcony and closed the doors, leaving Ren alone in the room.

"Damn it. They leave me alone here… It can't get worse…"

— Excuse me! Oh, there you are…

"That voice… Sounds familiar…" Ren thought and he saw the glass reflection, seeing a familiar face, a face he saw almost every single day. "It can't be… Shit! It became worse!"

— Welcome home, Master! — The maid greeted with a sweet tone in her voice. — I'm going to fill your tired heart full of lovely energy! Meow! I'm Becky, and I have the pleasure of serving you today.

— N-Nice to mee-ow-t you. — Ren said nervously. Becky giggled.

— We're going to get along so well! —Becky said before meowing. — Oh my… how thoughtless of me! I should explain my services to you, Master! — She said approaching Ren, who turned his face away from her glance. What would you like me to do today? The basics include cooking, cleaning, and laundry… — Becky came closer and whispered in Ren's ear — But there are other "services" we provide if you desire.

— I-I see… — Ren said, his voice shaken.

Becky started to analyze him from the top to the bottom.

— Hmmmm? You look young, Master… — She commented, her suspicions started to rise. — Are you… perhaps… in high school? — She asked, trying to look at his face.

— I'm-I'm… *Ahem* I'm a dad. — Ren said, trying to control himself. Becky laughed.

— Oh Master, you're soooo funny!

Becky analyzed him once again.

— Are you a high school student, right?

Becky stood quiet once again, before saying:

— Hmm, I'll wait to provide those other "services" until you've matured a bit, Master. So, I'll be going now.

— Hm? Wh-What?! No! — Ryuji exclaimed.

— Quiet! — Mishima scolded in a whisper.

— Hm? I-Is someone there!? — Becky asked, going towards the balcony.

— Oh no…

— Shit! Run, Mishima! — Ryuji said, running away.

— W-Wait!

— Mishima? Sakamoto-kun?

— So, it's really you… — Ren said.

Becky turned to Ren and asked.

— What? No, no. It's alright. How would you know me? This is our first meeting. Yes, the first time ever, Master.

— Don't play dumb with me, Kawakami-sensei. I know it's you. Actually, I knew it when I saw you, but I wasn't sure… until now.

Ren crossed his arms and glanced at Kawakami with a serious frown. She sighed in defeat and said:

— Ugh, this is unbelievable…

"I could say the same…" Ren thought

— Yes, it's me. Your homeroom teacher… — Kawakami admitted, wearing off her maid persona. — I'm so done… I can't believe I got caught by some of my own students. Did you request me specifically?

— No.

— So, who've told you? Who did you hear about this from?

— Wait, what?

— It was Ms. Chouno, wasn't it!? That harpy.

— Whoa, wait a sec. What are you talking about?

— Ms. Chouno, the English teacher…

— I know her. Why are you asking if it was her who told me? — Ren asked.

— She's been snooping on all the teachers ever since that incident with Mr. Kamoshida. Are you going to tell Ms. Chouno about this?

— No. What should I? — Ren inquired. — And why a maid job?

— I know, I know! I should've taken a job outside of the city but I needed it to be close to school so I could get there after I finished work. — She commented bitterly.

— I see… I didn't know if you wanted to know. It was Ryu— I mean, Sakamoto's idea to call the maid service. He received a flier.

— Hmmm… It doesn't seem like you're playing dumb… In any case, I'll get in big trouble if you tell on me.

— As I said, I'm not planning to tell anyone about this. As long as you don't tell anyone about this as well. "For God's beloved sake, this is so embarrassing…"

— Hey, if you're going to side with a teacher, side with me. I'm in charge of your class, after all. And I'll do anything for you if you keep your promise to not tell Ms. Chouno.

— A-Anything…? — Ren asked nervously, toying with a lock of his hair nervously. Kawakami pouted in anger.

— Hey… It won't be any better for you if people find out that you called a maid service.

— I know that… — Ren said disappointed with himself.

— This isn't even your home address to begin with, is it? — Kawakami asked and Ren shook his head in negation. — I guess you at least thought about that.

— It was Ryuji who had that idea. — Ren murmured, but Kawakami heard his comment.

— I see… Well, let's forget this had happened. I'll treat this as if you had canceled, so you won't have to pay anything. Okay?

— No, you came here, so at least let me pay you.

— No, I insist. — Kawakami said.

— If you want that way…

— On that note, I'll be leaving! Just act as if nothing ever happened!

— Okay.

— Okay, bye.

"Dammit… That was… unbelievable… I just want to go home…" Ren thought while exiting the vacant apartment and going back home.
