Fu Qiuning [a] "Yes, I lost my way. Not only that, but I have also lost my way of life. Aih…"

Jin Fengju, "… …"

"Mother," Jin Changfeng came forward to tug at Fu Qiuning's coat and said solemnly, "In the future, if you wish to take a stroll somewhere, do have me or my sister accompany you. It is dangerous on your own."

"[a] You are right, the world is a dangerous place. This place is as dangerous as a primaeval forest," Fu Qiuning agreed with a sigh. [a] "In fact, you two should also stay close to Night Breeze Pavilion and be extra careful in this place. Danger could lurk anywhere, even inside the marquisate…"

[a] Jin Fengju coughed. However, instead of addressing the 'danger lurking inside the marquisate', he said instead, "Primaeval forest? What is a primaeval forest?"

[a] Fu Qiuning gave him a hollow look, thinking: So this is what you want to focus on? Fine, I don't care anymore. Let's just use my golden finger excuse again.

"I heard this word back at the village. A large forest of over a hundred or even a thousand mu where people often got lost and never came out of is called a primaeval forest," there, that should do it. She thought for a moment and added, "I supposed that garden is not quite as bad as a primaeval forest, but the paths are quite difficult to navigate. Speaking of which, have others been informed that I have been found? [b]"

"Goodness, look at me!" Jin Fengju suddenly slapped his forehead and even stomped his foot. "I actually forgot about this. Goodness, there must still be quite a few servants left searching in the garden." He turned to Jin Ming and scolded, "Why did you not remind me of this?"

Jin Ming beamed ingratiatingly and said, "This servant was so happy that it slipped this servant's mind too. Even so, once those little brats could not find anyone, they would naturally return to their rooms. Even if some were loyal to a fault, they could spend the night in one of the many rest areas within the garden. So long as the Master awarded them a little money for their hard work, who would not be satisfied?"

Jin Fengju replied: "Even if that is true, you should also give a shout at the garden. If they could hear it, they could at least go home safely." After speaking with Fu Qiuning a little more, he hastily fled.

Once Jin Fengju left, Fu Qiuning asked after Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao's homework. Seeing Aunt Yu and Yu Jie's [c] still anxious looks, she put some effort into pulling herself out [a] of the mire of depression to tell the story of how she got lost at Yong Cui garden. The details of the story were so absurd and ridiculous that neither Aunt Yu nor Yu Jie knew whether to laugh or to cry as they listened. That evening, they had dinner together and darkness soon fell, turning the area outside of their warm rooms completely dark.

Fu Qiuning personally lit the candles and found Aunt Yu embroidering by a lone candlelight. She said, "You should take care of your eyes. There is no need to be embroidering things as though our very lives depend on them. [d] Moreover, you have your marriage to look forward to. Speaking of which, Second Madam Wan told me that the matter had already been decided by the Young Marquis and that there should be no more obstacles to your marriage. Tomorrow, I shall send Yu Jie over to Mother Zhang and have her pick a good date for the wedding."

Aunt Yu blushed. She quickly tossed her needle and thread to the side with a shy smile and said, "I only intended to finish this one flower and could not bear to sleep until it's done. Why is Madam telling me this?"

She then tried to flee, but Qiuning managed to snag her arm and pull her back down.

Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao were in the study with Jin Zhuan and Lu Hua. While the four children were studying, Fu Qiuning took the opportunity to [e] say, "Not so fast. If I remember correctly, you mentioned that you are still a virgin?"

[e] Aunt Yu flushed red and lowered her eyes.

Fu Qiuning raised her eyebrows, "[f] Is that old landlord impotent? Is that why he refused to divorce you? Is it because he has yet to enjoy your favour after paying your parents so much money? Well, looks like Third Brother Zhang got lucky. Not that a woman's worth should be placed on their virginity. Still, many happiness and felicitations to you."

Aunt Yu, perhaps stimulated to try and take some sort of revenge against Fu Qiuning, retorted in a hushed voice, "Then… what about Madam and the Young Marquis? That is, you usually sleep in separate rooms, but… there are times when the maids are not present… did you and… that is…"

Fu Qiuning rolled her eyes, "Of course not. [e] What's with you and Second Madam? Is there some sort of event I am not aware of? Should I check the calendar?"

[e] Aunt Yu muttered, "Madam is the one who brought it up first…"

Yu Jie piped up, "Wait, Second Madam asked Madam about, about…" [e] she suddenly flushed red and hissed, "It's not like she is close with you. She hates you. So, why would she bring such a private thing up?"

Fu Qiuning frowned and said, "So, you think it's strange too? I believe she was probing for something. Even so, what could she do if she knows one way or another?" [g]

Aunt Yu opened her mouth, but closed it again. Then, she darted another look at Fu Qiuning, before looking down again.

Fu Qiuning rolled her eyes, "If you have something to say. Say it. How long have we known each other?"

"Well, this maid is worried whether this maid is overthinking…"

"Just say it first," Yu Jie said impatiently. "Come now, don't leave us like this." [g]

Fu Qiuning gently poked her in the forehead, "Look at you, all impatient. [g1] When are you going to grow into a refined lady?"

"This maid is a servant, there's no need to grow into a refined lady," Yu Jie replied with a giggle.

[e] Finally, after a little more urging, Aunt Yu said, "In fact, the reason why the old landlord did not… you know, was because of an old Taoist's words. That is why I am still a virgin even after six months of marriage. My mother lamented over my bad fate, as it is easy for them to drive me back home for still being a virgin. Had my virginity been taken, even my mother-in-law would not dare drive me back so blatantly.

Naturally, it was merely a farce to drive me away. The landlord fears his mother as mice fear cats. He married me secretly at a Buddhist temple, hoping that once rice had been cooked, his mother would not be able to do anything. Who would have thought he would receive a warning from that Taoist priest… Anyway, the result of this farce was that I was driven home on the excuse that it was part of noble large house rules…"

"Ah," said Fu Qiuning. [i] She had some inkling it might be something like that. Luckily, she had trusted her instincts back at Clear Soft Pavilion to not disclose any more information than necessary to Jiang Wanying.

"Wait, are you saying that Second Madam Wan wanted to know if Madam is still… so that she could… she could… but she doesn't have the authority to… to…"

"She might not have the authority, but there's another Jiang'shi with the authority to drive me away," said Fu Qiuning lazily. [i] "There is no need to think too hard about their motivations."

"Madam then… then what do we do?" At the mention of Madam Jiang, Yu Jie became dumbfounded. She was so anxious that she actually stamped her feet.

Fu Qiuning [i] could only laugh, "What are you panicking about? [g] Now that we know her motives, all that's left is to decide what to do next."

Aunt Yu nodded and said, "Indeed, I do not believe they would act hastily. No matter what [g] they find out, they still have to prove it. If word got to the Young Marquis that Madam had been subjected to humiliating tests, [i] what do you think he would do?"

[g] "Then… then… would they really test Madam's body?" said Yu Jie hesitantly. "Madam, this maid will be impertinent and say this. The Young Marquis clearly treats Madam very well now. H-however, if Madam keeps dragging the matter on and not… take the plunge. Then… the test…"

[j] "I'm actually interested to know what kind of test they would perform," Fu Qiuning mused. Aside from prodding for the hymen, there should be no other way to check for a woman's virginity, this social construct. Not that she knew of any even in the modern world. After all, she had dedicated her life to her motherland's opera and was considered a leftover nerdy girl by society. She was fine with this label and had ambled along nicely in life under this sign.

[j] Also, didn't she hear something about how the hymen could also break during vigorous exercise or horse riding? Would this mysterious ancient method deem ladies who had broken their hymen through horse riding as virgins or non-virgins? Would they test the v directly? How curious.

"I say, Madam, you should stop being angry with the Young Marquis. Honestly speaking, even among men, he is considered the very pinnacle of men. You just look at the other noble sons. Which of them could match up to our master? Do any of them shoulder the burden of their family in their twenties? Every single one of them hated that there are not enough hours in a day to fill with their vile debauchery.

Not to mention, apart from those few wives and concubines he took in during that one big wedding, our Master never accepted any new people in all these years, Madam, he really is a role model among men, ah. Madam should let go of the past and not think of it anymore. Moreover, didn't you give the Jinxiang Marquisate a slap in the face when you married in?

The Young Marquis may have abandoned you, but it was not completely unjustifiable. He had his reasons back then and Madam should really not take it to heart. Right now, Madam should get back together with the Master as soon as possible and save yourself from worrying about your future all day long."

Gumihou: What the sh*t?

Fu Qiuning: The f*ck?

Pill Bug: …Didn't Jin Fengju ask her to brew some nerve-calming concoction earlier? Is this how she acts when she has no fear?

Gumihou: You're saying the maid may have imbibed the nerve-calming concoction instead?

Fu Qiuning: Tsk, make sense. Those maids of mine are generally lovely people, but they have been too brainwashed by pointless ancient values

[a] Deleted: 'angrily glared at Jin Fengju as she whispered, "Even if you want to say it, you shouldn't say it in front of the children ah. As their mother, how would I still have the face to teach them in the future after what you did?"

"I want you to teach them to how to be adults, not for you to teach them how to look for the way, what's so embarrassing?" Jin Fengju grinned faintly'

Ahh, so that's why AR Qiuning is so hung up about the 'shame of getting lost'. It's so that JFJ could 'grinned faintly' at her, improve their relationship by teasing her and making FQN go 'kyaa~~'

Too bad, FQN is now mired with misery from chapter 120 since it's only 3 months till the day she had to enter the inner court and 'wait for death'. Want readers to forget about this crucial fact by throwing them a cute scene? I don't think so.

Deleted more of these nonsenses peppered through the chapter.

[b] Deleted extra words of 'please soothe the Old Madam on my behalf~~' which implies good relationships with both JFJ and Foxy Grandma. Author, you're too sneaky.

[c] Give a proper reason as to how the conversation started

[d] The transition between talking about embroidery and talking about Clear Soft Pavilion was rather unnatural. Was the author trying to dumb down Fu Qiuning via the 'ehehe, blep, knock head' gesture? Ah, it was followed by 'the Young Marquis already decided it'. So, basically 'ehehe' + 'butt polishing'

[e] More awkward transition. Fixed

[f] Deleted "Heaven does not forsake good people in the end. Although that old landlord robbed someone away, he did not have the fortune to enjoy the beauty of Aunt Yu. Zhang San has been smitten and waiting for these years, finally getting what he wants."

Are you a woman of that era? What does virginity have to do with a woman's worth?

Note: Author seems to enjoy using 'laugh boldly' to smooth over weird transitions

[g] Deleted extra faffing about. There is really no need to get up and sit down, then get up and talk, and then sit down.

[g1] Deleted 'With your quick temper, who would dare want you in the future?'

Perpetuating the 'refined lady' ideology? Not cool.

[i] Deleted 'ooohhhh, I seeeeee', replacing it with 'I knew it'

[j] Since the author wants to talk about the virginity test, word it under 'hmm, curious' rather than 'um…?' Also, bonus rumination over this social construct called 'virginity'

Aunt Yu and Yu Jie continued to talk, trying their best to persuade Fu Qiuning. [1a] Their mistress did not say anything either, and it was not until they found themselves nearly hoarse from talking that they finally realised that Fu Qiuning had not said or reacted in any way. Finally, one after another, they fell silent, and awkwardness began to build.

[2a]

"Are you done talking?" asked Fu Qiuning quietly.

"Madam…"

"If you are done cursing me into a doomed relationship, you may leave."

"Madam, but how can this relationship be considered doomed!" Yu Jie cried. "The Young Marquis clearly loves you!"

"Indeed," said Fu Qiuning. "But tell me, for how long? Do you intend for me to fall into jealous despair like Jiang Wanying? Or be like one of those petty concubines, playing games and scheming for my Lord Husband's favour?"

"But, the Master wouldn't…" Yu Jie withered under Fu Qiuning's glare. "He, he surely wouldn't?"

"And you know this, how?" Fu Qiuning arched an eyebrow at her. Then turned to Aunt Yu, "Suppose that Third Brother Zhang decided to get a concubine or even a mistress, would you be happy about it?"

"M-madam…" Aunt Yu flinched.

Fu Qiuning was sorry to treat this good woman like that, but it had to be said. She would not be hounded to death by her own maids about her sex life with a supposed 'pinnacle of man'. Who needs men in their lives? She could just jog along nicely in life without one of these scums.

[2a]

It was one thing to have a novel-like romantic relationship where a man and a woman form a pair and promise to love and honour each other. It was quite another to get involved with a [1b] [3a] schemer who could not even have the decency to pretend to keep his promise. Not to mention the way he tried to gaslight her into thinking that it was safer within the inner court than Night Breeze Pavilion.

She [1b] could see herself turning into another Jiang Wanying once she got involved with Jin Fengju. Pity the woman, including herself, who fell for that bastard's good looks and coaxing behaviour. Even her own maids praised him as 'the pinnacle of man', what of those who shared his bed and hated her for taking away their nightly privileges?

[1a] "Leave me, I want to sleep," Fu Qiuning ordered. The two maids scurried away, cowed by their mistress' displeasure.

Fu Qiuning lay on the bed, contemplating her future as she bit a corner of her quilt. She could not bite those maids for their nonsense, therefore the quilt had to be the one to suffer. She tried to remain objective. [1c] Jin Fengju was good-looking, there was no doubt about that. It would not be difficult at all to do the deed with him to derail whatever test the Jiangs thought up. The question was, would it be worth it?

[1c] Give up the v: The Young Marquis might be clingier, or he could lose interest once he tasted the v. The second possibility would be more favourable to her since she could remain at Night Breeze Pavilion.

[1c] Don't give up the v: She could be driven out of the marquisate if the test showed her virginity. The Young Marquis would undoubtedly defend her against the Jiangs, possibly alienating both mom and wife, causing them to hate her even more. The Young Marquis would be ridiculed, and maybe eventually hate her… or be even more obsessed with her.

Sigh.

[1c] What a bother over a stupid social construct. Who on earth decided a woman's worth should be measured by the thing between her legs? How vulgar. What a stupid society, filled with stupid people…

It was under such tangled thoughts that Fu Qiuning finally managed into a troubled sleep.

She was suddenly woken up by a smiling Jin Fengju who sat by her bed, "Qiuning, today, you must satisfy my intent, otherwise, neither Mother nor Wanying will ever let the matter go. To still be a virgin after six years of marriage within the marquisate. Even I would have a difficult time preventing our divorce."

Then, he suddenly rushed over to overwhelm her.

Fu Qiuning was so frightened by the sudden attack and tried to dodge, but she could not fight him off. In the end, she was pressed down and forced into doing this and that and… suddenly, she jolted awake and realised that it was merely a dream.

"… …" well, all that talk about sex must have stimulated it. When she moved, [1d] she felt a little wetness between her legs.

"… …" well, the good news is, she could probably stand letting that stallion rut into her v. [1d] Awesome, at least that's one question answered.

She flopped back to bed and stared at the ceiling contemplating life. Before she knew it, the sky gradually brightened, and she could hear Yu Jie and Aunt Yu moving about. Eventually, she got up, freshened herself and sent the children off to school.

The ladies went back to their rooms to do a little more embroidery work. [2a] The atmosphere was a little tense as the maids dared not speak about yesterday's faux pas. At mid-morning, there was a commotion at the gate and Fu Qiuning found Jin Ming leading more than a dozen male and female servants in.

He beamed at Fu Qiuning, "Madam, the Master says that he cannot let you have your way and that today, these people must be added here. Madam may be at ease, the Master personally chose these people himself. They do not serve any particular courtyard, but had worked in kitchens and laundry rooms as well as other chores. They are here to serve as escorts for Madam. Naturally, the maids by Madam's side would still be Yu Jie and Aunt Yu, but the mansion would soon purchase a few more girls. When the time comes, new ones will be sent to serve Madam."

[1e] Gaslighting.

[1e] Was Fu Qiuning's first thought. Followed by: So he never did intend to keep his 'will not stuff people into my courtyard for the next three months' promise. Why am I not surprised? [1e]

[2c] Jin Ming's beaming smile gradually faltered under Fu Qiuning's steady stare. "M-madam?" Then, he quickly bolstered his beaming smile again, this time even more strongly as he said, "Madam, do be at ease. The Master has always been very thorough and careful. Otherwise, the emperor would not have entrusted him with important matters, ah. Only, since the care of the marquisate is under Elder Madam and Second Madam, the Young Marquis rarely pays too much attention to it. With his time taken up by important missions, where would he find the time to pay attention to the affairs of the house? Even so, since it is for Madam, the Master thoroughly vetted the people here just for Madam. This servant had never seen the Master so thoughtful before."

"Indeed, your Master is very capable."

[2c] The answer was short, to the point, and somehow made Jin Ming gulp.

[2c] Suddenly, Fu Qiuning smiled. It was a grim smile, "Indeed, the servant is as capable as his master. With every breath, you sing praises to your master, leaving me no room to refute. Go back and tell your master that I understand his thoughts very well."

[2c] "Ah, then, Madam? The servants…?"

[2c] "Since you have already [3b] stuffed them here, there is nowhere for them to go, isn't there? Leave them. As for the new maids, tell your master I don't need them."

Luckily, Jin Ming was a well-trained bootlicker with a thick face. He beamed at Fu Qiuning ingratiatingly, saying, "The Master is at the palace now. He had been thinking about Madam and sent this one back first to arrange for the servants. This one shall rush to the palace with Madam's message. Should Madam need anything done, just order them as you like." Even as he spoke, Jin Ming had been bowing and stepping backwards, before fleeing the place altogether.

[2a] Yu Jie and Aunt Yu cautiously came up. When Fu Qiuning did not react, Yu Jie cautiously said, "What does Madam think? Seeing how much effort the Young Marquis put into picking out the servants, something that is usually left to the women of the estate, surely the Master has Madam in his heart?"

"Madam, don't be unreasonable. If even this cannot change your mind, surely you are being too hard-hearted? Surely even a heart of stone would melt at this?"

[2a]

Fu Qiuning turned her gaze towards the maids. They were shocked by her bitter expression.

"Madam, what…"

"So, you think a man who casually breaks his promises is a good man?"

"Madam…?"

[2a]

"Whatever, just… just give those people something to do. I'm going to my room." [4a]

Fu Qiuning paced in her room for a few moments before she gave up and went out for a walk. She stared at the fields that she had personally ploughed and planted, at the chickens and little piglet that Third Brother Zhang had somehow managed to bring back alive from the marketplace. At some point, a brood of chicks had been hatched and she found herself surrounded by plump, fluffy chicks.

"Who knows how long I can stay in this place," Fu Qiuning sat down and leaned back against an old apricot tree. Overhead, white apricot blossoms had bloomed and were now swaying in the wind.

Intense reluctance brewed in her heart. To leave this wonderful little paradise… no, she must find a way to not move out of here. The only way was to have Jin Fengju lose interest in her. Should she cut her face with a knife? Would it even work? Appearance-wise, she was only average against his other women. [4b] Even so… why should she disfigure herself for a man? Moreover, what would the twins think?

Was she… truly helpless here?

Trapped, she was trapped one way or other.

How she hated Jin Fengju for casually breaking his promises. [3a] That is the reason why she could never trust him, this scheming gaslighting bastard. As for that Jiang Wanying, she hated that woman for her stupidity. Why would she randomly make trouble for people? Didn't she know that if she just stayed calm and lived as a model citizen, Jin Fengju would love her forever and not come sniffing around Night Breeze Pavilion? You think you're so clever thinking up ways to harm me, but don't you know the more you harm me, the more that dog of yours clings to me? What man doesn't like playing the hero? Have you never heard his solo speeches? He loves being a hero and now you obliged him by playing the villain, you stupid, stupid woman.

[1f]

We are both fellow women, but you want to make trouble for other women for a man's love? Where do you think a man's love is from?

It's from his heart and his crotch. Not my heart or my v, you stupid woman!

In fact, you have succeeded where Jin Fengju had failed. You have made me contemplate letting him have the v! Congratulations, you stupid woman!

Even if you get rid of me, do you think your husband will thank you for it? Huh? What guarantee do you have that he wouldn't just marry someone else in? Perhaps even a princess? Someone with an even higher status than you!

Stupid woman!

In the next two days, Jin Fengju did not visit Night Breeze Pavilion. He considered himself a tactful man and knew that if he were to go there, he would face Fu Qiuning's wrath. Moreover, he was just too busy, ah.

The next few days passed quickly. When he finally managed to wrangle some free time, he first went to give his greetings to Old Madam Jin in the morning. Then, finally, unable to wait any longer, Jin Fengju headed straight for Night Breeze Pavilion.

As he strolled through Yong Cui Garden, he suddenly spotted a large gecko sunning itself on some rocks. Jin Fengju could not help but remark, "Is it time for geckos to appear?" He stepped forward and quickly snagged the creature with his hands. He showed it to Jin Ming with a smile, "Look, this fellow is quite large."

Jin Ming also smiled, "How odd, I rarely see them in the past, but just a day ago, while delivering satin to Clear Soft Pavilion, I saw one at the wall. Well, that's because Miss Qiu Xia screamed so loudly in fright that I hurried over and saw one. I quickly caught it and threw it far away. However, the one in Master's hand is much bigger than that one. Could it be that we have too much food in the estate and these things grew big eating our food?"

Jin Fengju laughingly scolded, "What nonsense are you talking about? These things only eat bugs like mosquitoes and the like. Now that we are coming to summer, with all the bugs coming out, it's natural for their predators to grow large from feeding on them, no?" Suddenly, he frowned and lowered his voice, "You say that Qiu Xia screamed in fright?"

"Isn't it so? Unexpectedly, that brave and sassy Miss Qiu Xia would be afraid of such a little thing." Jin Ming collected the little thing from Jin Fengju's hand and was about to throw it away when Jin Fengju said, "Don't throw it. Bring it to Qiuning, let her play with it."

"Master, don't joke around anymore. You want to give this to the Madam? Wouldn't she run away from you in fear?" Jin Ming asked with wide eyes.

Jin Fengju's lips quirked up, "If she is truly afraid, you can throw it anywhere in that yard."

Jin Ming paused. He had no idea just what kind of medicine his Master was on, but this sharp servant soon caught on and was secretly amused. He thought: For the sake of forcing the Madam into the inner court, he had really worked hard, ah. This is truly doing evil for the sake of good. Tsk, tsk, really, this Madam… could you really beat Master? You should just move in sooner for everyone's sake, and avoid suffering Master's underhanded methods.

As he pondered over various things, they eventually arrived at Night Breeze Pavilion. Yu Jie and Aunt Yu were in the middle of arranging flowers in vases. As for Fu Qiuning, she was sitting on the porch, dressed in a light green dress, quietly watching them work.

Looking at the ladies was truly like looking at a painting.

[Gumihou: … ah, doing evil for the sake of good? Have you never heard of the saying 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions?']

[1] Change details per previous chapter:

[1a] Would a displeased Fu Qiuning be 'shaken' and 'moved' by her maid's blathering? I don't think so.

[1b] Instead of 'sex' being the deal breaker. 'JFJ's shitty attitude per [3a] being the reason for her hesitation

[1c] Instead of 'he's so handsome, kyaa~~ as a woman I… kyaa~~~' go with 'should I, should I not?'

[1d] Deleted the pants washing scene because this is not an omegaverse story and real women don't gush like that

Pill Bug: Medically speaking, it's kind of impossible for women to gush enough for them to have to wash their pants

Gumihou: Further evidence that Author did not know how sex works

[1e] Delete Fu Qiuning's gushy ass polishing 'aww, he personally picked people for me, kyaa~'. Replaced with 'so, he never did intend to keep his promise'

[1f] Switched out reasonable details about 'JWY knows that love is from JFJ's heart etc etc' to repeated lamentations of 'stupid woman!' from a frustrated FQN

[2] Consequences of Change:

[2a] Consequence of [1a]

[2b] Since she's not washing her pants per [1c] allow her to flop back to bed and contemplate life.

[2c] Consequence of an expressionless and angry FQN as per [1e]

[3] Terrible Truths:

[3a] Hate him not for his many wives and concubines, but for his scheming attitude and refusal to honour his promise, and gaslighting behaviour

[3b] 'Since you've already stuff them here' – Imply JFJ's tendency to stuff people into places against their will

[4] Deleted Stuff:

[4a] Directly delete blah blah, told the maids to tell the servants to do this and that, bla.

[4b] Deleted 'JFJ might not love an ugly person, but I can't face being ugly, ugh, dilemma~~'

"You sure know how to enjoy yourself." [1]

Jin Fengju came in, announcing himself with a hearty laugh as Fu Qiuning stood up. He looked around the garden and nodded with satisfaction, saying, "Now that the flowers have bloomed, it is really lovely. That new rose frame looks very good, and the flowers on the fences are wonderful too. Did you build it yourself?"

[1a] Fu Qiuning paused, looking at the grin on that handsome face. It screamed 'Praise me! Praise me!' So, he wanted to be praised for his high-handed attitude, should she go with it? Should she ignore it?

[1a] The silence that followed the hearty, enthusiastic laughter had stretched a little too long to be anything but awkward. What could she do but thrilled an equally loud laugh and said, "Naturally it is not something I could do alone! Naturally, Aunt Yu and Yu Jie help. Of course, with the people you brought in, the yard is even more orderly and clean! Is it not?"

Jin Fengji nodded [2a] slowly, "Indeed, did I not tell you earlier that you should have more people here? But you insisted that you like the quiet and refused each time. What do you think? Do you now know the benefits of having more people?"

[2a] It was half taunt and half self-praise. However, when it did not elicit either praise or scolding from Fu Qiuning, he looked to see what caught her attention and saw her looking at the large gecko in Jin Ming's hand. Ah, he thought: Dear Qiuning must have been frightened by the sight of that beast. I wonder what kind of look she would reveal~~

Beaming he said, "We found this fellow in the garden on our way here. It looked interesting so I brought it for you to play with~"

Fu Qiuning snorted coldly. [1b] "Other madams and mistresses in this estate raises cats and dogs in their houses, but you brought me a gecko?" As she spoke, she approached Jin Ming and poked the gecko's tail, causing the creature to twist frantically in Jin Ming's hand. She smirked, "I supposed it's a little more interesting than a regular animal."

Yu Jie and Aunt Yu were done with their flowers and ran over to look at the gecko as well. Surprised, they said, "Well, to think that it's that time already? Goodness." Then, they too poked the gecko with their bare hands, tormenting the poor creature who could not break out of Jin Ming's grip at all.

Jin Ming blinked at the ladies, "Why is everyone so daring at Madam's place? Not a single one of you is afraid of it?"

Fu Qiuning's [2b] eyes flashed once before lowering, with a smile she said, "What is there to be afraid of? Though these things are rare in the north, they often crawl about the walls during summer, especially around the lantern lights. We like having them around as they keep the mosquito population down. Down south, there would be even more of them. They neither bite nor sting, what is there to be afraid of?"

Yu Jie grinned, "Isn't it so? Speaking of which, it is basically just a poor four-legged snake. Everyone is afraid of snakes, but once God drew legs on the snake [3], it is rendered harmless."

[4] "I also hear they could be made into medicine," said Fu Qiuning casually. "Though I can't say much for the quality of their meat. Not even the bigger ones."

[4] "… …"

[4] "… …"

"I- I heard that aside from being useful for eating mosquitoes," Jin Ming quickly interjected, eager to fill in this awkward silence, "these things could be made into medicine! Th-that's right, when I was a child, my mother said that dried Gecko was an important ingredient for the Gecko Sand [4a]."

"Gecko Sand?" [4a] Jin Fengju frowned, "Just what is that? Some kind of medicine?"

"According to my old mother, a few hundred years ago, girls like to put it on their person as proof of their chastity. [5] So, it was also called Chastity Proving Dust. Now that this trend had fallen out of favour, it could be said that the geckos had escaped persecution."

[6] "Wait," said Fu Qiuning, "are those dust or sand a sign women wear to show their chastity or could it actually show whether they are still virgins?"

[6a] "Ah, um, that is… th-this servant's old mother said that it could prove a woman's chastity…"

[6] "But how? How do bits of gecko dust know whether a woman is still a virgin? Is it through their blood or sweat?"

[6a] "M-madam, this is… this servant is unsure, perhaps, an older matron…"

[6a] "Wh-why are you so interested in this…" asked Jin Fengju in confusion.

[6] "Why aren't you interested? Isn't it fascinating how mere powder could detect whether a woman had been penetra-"

[6a] "Right, yes, fascinating," Jin Fengju said loudly. "Can we please stop talking about… geckos?"

[6b] Fu Qiuning glanced at the spluttering man from the corner of her eyes. With how everyone is so interested in her v, especially this man and his wife, she had half expected the couple to work in tandem to get her into his bed. It was not out of Jiang Wanying's personality to 'help' her husband bed a woman if she thinks it would improve her relationship with said scum.

[6b] After all, women who helped their husbands kidnap girls and rape them exist even in the modern world. She would not be surprised if scums like these exist here. Tch, how horrible it is to be in an era where a woman's chastity became her identity, and her status dependent on who their father xx with…

"Qiuning, what is it?" [7] in Jin Fengju's eyes, he saw Fu Qiuning trembling, lips pressed together as though gnashing her teeth. Her eyes looked empty, almost in a daze and he could not help but pull her hand and said, "If anything is troubling you, do speak up. So long as you are willing to disclose to me your grievances, is there any matter within this estate that I could not settle?"

[7a] Fu Qiuning observed this man quietly. There were… so many things she could say to this statement, most of them ending with 'are you serious?' and 'for real?'

In the end, she merely said, "Nothing, it's nothing," she murmured with a bitter smile as she shook her head. This Jin Fengju's concern may not be false, but this kind of hot and heavy passion would more than likely fizzle out fast as soon as it is ignited. [7b] Moreover, there was no such thing as adultery for men in this era, only X number of wives, concubines and bedmates. Therefore, she could not bet her life on this fickle man's 'favour'.

"Qiuning…" Jin Fengju suddenly felt anxious, he grasped Fu Qiuning's hand even more tightly. "Remember what I said? So long as you are within this estate, I shall never allow even a bit of harm come to you…"

Fu Qiuning's laughter was sudden and abrupt. Her voice was very high as she said, "Indeed, I remember. You have said many things to me and I remember them all. I could only hope that when the time comes the Young Marquis would not default on his many promises, ah."

Jin Fengju nearly choked. He had not expected Fu Qiuning to bring up his very first promises to her. Unable to refute or argue against her words, he fell into a slight depression. Though he desperately wished to brush this ugly moment aside, he was unwilling to appear as a liar before Fu Qiuning for the third time. Thus, he could only maintain a painful silence, wishing to reassure, but unable to speak without being labelled a liar.

Fu Qiuning knew that Jin Fengju [7c] was being tormented by his thoughts, but did not bother to reassure or correct him. Why should she? Let him stew. After allowing a long moment of awkward silence, she said, "What is Lord Husband's purpose for coming here?"

"Can I not come without purpose?" Jin Fengju thickened his face and sat down beside her. He looked at the garden with its blooming flowers and fresh green trees, saying with a gentle voice, "To be honest, I really like this place. Each time I look at you and this courtyard brimming with bright and cheerful plants, my heart feels at peace and my mind becomes clearer. Qiuning, you regard this place as a paradise, so, how could I treat it otherwise? Only, this place is too remote."

Fu Qiuning sneered, "Only a place that is far away from the secular world could be considered a paradise. You wish to experience paradise, yet admonished it for being far away. Do you not know that it is impossible to obtain both fish and bear paws from the same location?"

Jin Fengju smiled and said, "Indeed, there is this saying too. Only… very well, I shall think over the matter again. Although there is no courtyard within the inner court with a garden like Night Breeze Pavilion, I recall that there's a courtyard in Yong Cui Garden called Elegant Mansion. It is very similar to Night Breeze Pavilion and though it is still inside the garden, it is much closer to the main entrance. Close enough to narrowly be counted as part of the inner court, just barely so. Since you refuse to enter the inner court and Night Breeze Pavilion is too remote, how about this compromise?"

Fu Qiuning considered. This was not bad, at least, she would not be too close to those scheming people. Moreover, according to Dreams of Red Mansion, only the 12 Beauties of Jinling [8], like the beautiful Daiyu, were allowed to stay inside the garden. I can't be compared to any of the ladies in the Red Mansion, but could reside inside a garden like them, surely there's no need to be greedy?

At this, she smiled and said, "Elegant Mansion? I fear it is too heavy an honour. I am but a mere vulgar person, how could I dare associate myself with the word 'elegant'?"

Jin Fengju smiled, "Is that all? If you do not like the name, you may rename it Night Breeze Mansion. It is merely a change of nameplate. So long as I can see you smile, my heart will be at ease. I am truly in the palm of your hands, ah. I have never been this cautious with my words even when speaking with my brother-in-law."

"Cautious with your words?" Fu Qiuning [8] sneered, "How odd, you are the Young Marquis, no, the Marquis while I am but a mere wife in name. What need do you have to treat me with courtesy let alone be cautious with your words around me? How dare I? Unless someone has been guilty of something and is now burdened by guilt to act pitiful, I cannot think of a reason for a nobleman to treat me, an illegitimate daughter, with anything but the barest minimum of courtesy."

[9a] "… …" as he struggled to think of something to say that did not make him seem even more at fault or dig him into deeper trouble, Jin Fengju noticed a young boy servant running up. He quickly turned away, glad for the distraction. The young servant ran up to say, "Second Master, the Old Master requested your presence. People from the Department of Justice have arrived. Looks like they are here to congratulate our Second Old Master's promotion."

Jin Fengju [9a] hastily stood up. "Is that so? Didn't they say the promotion would only happen in two more months' time? Why so soon? Is he being promoted to be the Justice of Peace?" he was about to walk away when he stopped and hesitated. Finally, he turned around to smile at Fu Qiuning, "Don't stay outside too long. It's a little gloomy today, it may rain soon. Your clothes are so thin, take care not to catch a cold. I shall go to the front courtyard and speak to the guests." With that, he began to step down the steps and made for the front gate.

"Lord Husband,"

Jin Fengju turned at Fu Qiuning's call. [10] There was an odd smile on her face as she said, "Will you be here again tonight? If not, I will not prepare your share of the meal."

Jin Fengju [7] stared at the woman who was standing at the top of the steps. [7d] She exuded a quiet and calm aura, like the blooming flower of a [11] Queen of the Night Cactus. This flower had flourished quietly on her own, away from the brilliant sun on very little resource. The sight of her standing on the top steps was indescribably moving. Even her voice was as clear as pearls falling on a jade plate and he could not help the palpitations in his heart. He smiled and said, "I suppose you really do not wish to spare this meal. Therefore, I insist on coming. I shall come tonight. Have Feng'er and Jiao'er prepare their homework for inspection. I shall look at them later."

"Yes, of course," Fu Qiuning's smile was sharp and brilliant as Jin Fengju's back disappeared out the gate against the hollowness in her chest. [6c] She will have to make a very difficult decision soon.

"Madam…" Yu Jie and Aunt Yu looked at their mistress warily. They had accidentally caught a glimpse of the sharp [6c] coldness in her eyes and were nearly frightened out of their wits. However, the look quickly disappeared, and she even called out to the master as he was leaving. This had never happened before.

[Gumihou: Let's set the mood for the next chapter]

[1] Adjust the tone of this chapter to fit the previous chapter:

[1a] 'FQN smiled and said' as though nothing major had happened in the past two days, three days ago. Like her trauma never happened. Haha

Nope.

[2] Shedding Light on:

[2a] To Jin Fengju's scumminess

[2b] Reveal FQN's real thoughts and feelings now and then

[3] Legs on a snake.

Monitor lizards are sometimes called 'four-legged snake' in Chinese 四脚蛇. I think she's making a pun of some sort? The joke transfers but is not very inspiring. Instead, reference the idiom 'drawing legs on a snake'.

en/drawing-a-snake-and-adding-legs-to-it/

To give the meaning of 'when god drew legs on a snake, this frightening creature suddenly became harmless'

Not that monitor lizards are completely harmless, please do not feed them.

[4] A 'wait, wut?' moment. Deleted this complete non sequitur.

Jin Fengju frowned again. He turned to Jin Ming and asked, "Are geckos useful at all? In medicine or some other ways?"

Its only function was to have JFJ show his face so that he could take credit for Jin Ming's explanation.

Replace it with an awkward remark from FQN, resulting in a sudden babble of over information from Jin Ming.

[4a] Put JFJ back to remark on the Gecko Sand

[5] Gecko Sand = Chastity Proving Dust

Since Gecko Sand or Gecko Dust sounds weird, Pill Bug and Gumi devised a more beautiful name for it. Unfortunately, we did not anticipate this gecko-related chapter…

So, adjust the text to imply that Gecko Sand and Chastity Proving Dust are the same thing without having to redo the earlier chapters.

[6] Deleted AR Qiuning and her panic as well as her stuttering question about how Gecko Sand is made. It all served to let JFJ go 'Aww, why you scared? No worries ~~ I protecc~~'

It's all very disgusting.

Replaced it with a 'wow, they test virginity with this' scene per chapter 121, Note j, where FQN showed an inordinate interest in ancient virginity testing techniques

[6a] Reaction per [6] no more tender yet condescending 'oh noes, I helps you~' from JFJ

[6b] Deleted AR Qiuning's 'muu, this man so bad, grr, I so angy, angy, kyaa~' moments.

Have F Qiuning sneer at JFJ rather than twist her waist around like AR Qiuning going nyaaa~~~

[6c] Deleted AR Qiuning 'kyaa~~ thinking that JFJ will be here tonight, I just… uwu~~~'

Replaced it with, 'I must make a decision soon'.

[7] Added 'in JFJ's eyes' to explain the FQN's absurdly vulnerable behaviour

[7a] FQN's more plausible reaction in place of 'oh noes, oh noes, uwaahh~~~'

[7b] Replace 'oh woe is me~~' with 'ugh'

[7c] Replace 'knew he must have thought wrongly' with 'heh, he's suffering now'

[7d] Give Fu Qiuning's descriptions in JFJ's eyes an alternate (reader's view) interpretation that obviously showed that he's deluding himself.

[8] Daiyu – one of the most beautiful women in Dreams of Red Chamber

[9] Change the feelings behind Fu Qiuning's thoughts from 'teasing' to 'cool indifference'

[9a] The author glossed over FQN calling JFJ out on breaking his promise multiple times via his show of 'relief to see her no longer in a panic' and then variations of 'she so pwetty~~' thoughts.

Since she did not panic thanks to [6], show his delusions against her calm.

[10] Foreshadow Fu Qiuning's actions and feelings here. It IS possible to hate someone and have sex with them out of necessity. Let Gumi show you how it's done.

[11] Queen of the Night Cactus grows in the shadier parts of the jungle. The implication here is FQN had been growing in the shade, instead of direct sunlight.

"[a1] What are you two looking at?" Fu Qiuning flashed a glance at the maids.

Yu Jie and Aunt Yu [a2] cowered, "Uh, Madam, what should we make for dinner tonight?"

Fu Qiuning frowned, "Since he called me stingy, just steam some Wowotou for dinner. [1]"

The maids exchanged a look with each other, but did not dare to tease the madam while she was in such a strange mood.

Jin Shi, the Second Old Master of the Jin family, was finally promoted to a Third Rank official and was now the new Lesser Secretary of the Ministry of Justice. It turns out that the previous official had retired early, which was why Jin Shi was able to take office early.

At that moment, the entire dukedom was enlivened with joy. Not only were Jin Fengju, Jin Pengzhang, Jin Luanfeng and others accompanying the dignitaries celebrating with a banquet at the outer court, the inner court was also very lively with many titled noblewomen coming over to celebrate.

Naturally, these people were graciously received by Old Madam Jin, Madam Fang and Madam Jiang. He'shi was not particularly experienced at managing the estate, but since her husband was the one who had received the promotion, she took the dominant role on the surface even though Jiang Wanying was the one organising everything in the background.

The sound of firecrackers and drums reached even the remote Night Breeze Pavilion. Fu Qiuning saw her servants all stretching their necks to catch a glimpse of the excitement, but Night Breeze Pavilion was truly far away and nothing much could be seen from there. Finally, she dismissed them and sent them all out to watch the excitement. Young at heart Yu Jie also ran off to join the rest. Only Aunt Yu and Fu Qiuning were left in the house, and somehow, they two began to talk about Aunt Yu's coming marriage.

It turned out that Mother Zhang had gone to Jiang Wanying to beg for grace just the day before and the betrothal between Aunt Yu to Third Brother Zhang was finally realised. After the wedding, Aunt Yu would continue to serve beside Qiuning and Third Brother Zhang would enter the household as a long-term servant. The couple would be given a small yard and house behind the estate. That way, they could still carry out their duties whilst still having a bit of privacy for themselves.

The wedding was scheduled to be held after the Dragon Boat Festival. Right now, Aunt Yu was rushing to prepare her wedding veil, pillows etc. As for the wedding dress, Jin Fengju had already mentioned that he would send her a complete set of phoenix crown and caped dress. Naturally, since it was a gift from the Marquis, how could it be shabby? [b1] However, Fu Qiuning could not help but wonder if part of the reason for this gift was due to a guilty conscience. Could that man even feel guilt in the first place? Or was it merely some kind of compensation related thing?

[b1] After all, it was thanks to his petty inaction that Fu Qiuning was nearly kicked out of Night Breeze Pavilion. Jin Fengju had thrown all blame on Jiang Wanying when he made his impassioned speech at her, but it was obvious to anyone with a few working brain cells to realise the chain of actions that lead to the revelation of the embroidered handkerchief. This action was also in line with his habit of buying affection with material things. Well, at least Aunt Yu did not have to worry about preparing a dress for the wedding.

The festivities in the dukedom lasted all day. As the sun slowly set, Fu Qiuning brought a folding stool to the courtyard. As the sun sank on the horizon, her hands absently put an incense bag together, her mind busily thinking: Would Jin Fengju actually turn up? With such a happy event going on, surely they would also want to hold an evening banquet? [a3] If that's the case, she would be spared one more day…

A leisurely drawl interrupted her thoughts, "Beauty in the setting sun, one reflects upon the other in splendour. Qiuning, have you been waiting for me?"

Fu Qiuning looked up to see Jin Fengju in a silver-blue spring outfit, his steps as smooth as his voice, even the very breeze doing its best to show off his elegance and dashing suaveness.

[a4] Fu Qiuning could not help the thump in her heart. It's here. This offensively beautiful man, secure in his ego and knowledge of his own desirability, who had never been challenged in love until her arrival, was now in front of her. Well, at least this high-grade natural-born scourge of women was easy on the eyes.

Jin Fengju, still beaming at Fu Qiuning, even as he thought sadly to himself: Is being the number one most handsome man worth a fart? I cannot even make my own woman fall for me, ugly men are not as miserable as I am, ah.

"Has the party in the outer court dispersed? [a1]" Fu Qiuning stood up. She turned around and stooped a little as she put the folding stool to the side. She straightened to see [b3] JFJ standing still with his eyes fixed on her. She thought: Was he staring at her bottom just now…

"[b3] N-naturally it is still ongoing. However, I recalled my dinner promise to Qiuning and, naturally, I'd rather let those officials down than miss a promise with you, ah. Hahaha!" Jin Fengju's laughter was very loud in the empty yard.

He had been [b3] drinking and toasting with officials all day and was now a little tipsy. Earlier, when Fu Qiuning asked if he would come for dinner, thoughts of her had plagued his mind during the entire celebratory banquet. It was so rare that instead of a dinner promise, it sounded like something so much more. Whenever he thought of the way she had called him back… how could he not be excited and happy?

"[a1] If you wish to eat, you may stay and eat. Yu Jie steamed some Wowotou for tonight, it's up to you if you wish to eat it," said Fu Qiuning as she studied the food box in his hands. "Where is your tail?"

Jin Fengju blinked for a moment, before realising she was talking about Jin Ming. He laughed and said, "Brother-in-law sent a congratulatory gift. So, I sent Jin Ming to the Royal Palace with some return gifts for Elder Sister." Then, he beamed and added, "I know you're the petty type, but since you've invited me, to avoid offending a certain someone and making them regret the invitation, I even brought a little food tribute."

"Is that so? It looks like the Marquis knows how to plan," Fu Qiuning openly rolled her eyes at him. She accepted the box and placed it on a table. When she uncovered the first layer, a strong fragrance assaulted her nostrils, and found herself looking at several exquisite pastries.

"There are a few plates of side dishes in the layer below," said Jin Fengju as he sat down. "At noon today, Elder Brother had especially transferred a few new cooks from the restaurant to make the banquet. I found the food quite agreeable and bade someone to set them aside to bring to you. Where are Feng'er and Jiao'er? I remember they especially liked flaky pastries. That's right, I have also asked them to pack those red bean snacks you like."

"Many thanks to Lord Husband for your thoughtfulness and benevolence." Fu Qiuning replaced the lid on the food box and yelled out, "Matron Liang! Take this to the kitchen. Warm them up and start the meal." Then, turning a serene face at Jin Fengju, she said, "Feng'er and Jiao'er are still working on their essays. Once they finish, we'll have dinner together. If they were to eat the snacks first, they would not have any appetite for their meal."

Jin Fengju laughed and said, "That is the right thing to do. No wonder the children are so well brought up." As he spoke, he gazed at Fu Qiuning and thought: Am I deluding myself? Is Qiuning treating me differently today? Did I anger her with the gecko? Also, why did she talk so candidly about her chastity? Could it be that she wanted me to…

"What are you staring at?" [a6]

[b4] "Qiuning is very beautiful," he blurted out. He then shook himself and, pulling up the worldly, dashing gentleman style, said leisurely, "En, light pink suits you very well. With your skin so white, pastel, gentle colours like this suit you best. Indeed, since such colours suit you most, why do I rarely see you in them?"

[a5] "Perhaps it is because I could not afford them before," [a6] Fu Qiuning looked towards the setting sun. [a7] She was running out of time to make her decision. To Jin Fengju, she must be testing and flirting with him, blowing hot and cold confusedly. However, this decision would impact not only her life but the lives of the children as well. Not to mention, those poor deluded women in the marquis' inner court…

[b4] "That is… that is, well, it suits you…" Jin Fengju finished lamely. His dashing and suave attitude wilting as old facts were thrown at his face. "Y-you should wear these colours more often."

[b3] Jin Fengju was staring at the hair by Fu Qiuning's temples. A few strands had gotten loose, floating past her cheek as she lowered herself to pour tea. After a moment's hesitation, he boldly reached over to brush those hairs back, tucking them behind her ear. Fu Qiuning paused. [a5] She did not look at him. However, she did not evade him either.

His heart started to thump wildly again.

"Have some tea first, you must be thirsty [a6]." [a8] her eyes looked up once, but then looked away. However, instead of saying anything else, she sat down.

Jin Fengju's [b3] tongue stuck out to lick his lips. He thought: Was it his imagination? Was Qiuning really… giving in finally? How odd, back during New Year's Eve, when I used the Mourning Soldier Strategy [2], she remained unmoved, but why is she loosening up now? Or… could it be that her love had grown for me over time?

He was about to test her further when a child's voice cried out, "Father, father, look at the words I wrote, the teacher praised my writing today!"

Jin Fengju violently withdrew the hand that had been inching towards Fu Qiuning's waist. Blushing with some embarrassment, he feigned a cough and said, "En, good, let Father have a look. Only… Jiao'er, ah, in the future, you must knock on people's doors before entering their rooms, understand? Even Father and Mother's room, you must remember to knock. [3]"

Jin Changjiao twisted her head around, looking at the open doors before flattening her mouth aggrievedly, "But, Father, the doors are not closed. If the doors are not closed, why should I knock?"

Fu Qiuning coughed into her fist. The [a7] weird atmosphere from before was all but broken by a mulish Jin Changjiao. She smirked at Jin Fengju, thinking: [a5] Look at this despicable man. You tried to get fresh with me and were stopped by your innocent daughter, and yet you try to lecture her on etiquette? Tch, I can't believe I'm considering sleeping with you just to stay in this horrible place.

"En, that is… Jiao'er is very sharp. Naturally, this advice is for times when the doors are closed. It is only polite to knock before entering." Luckily for Jin Fengju's dignity, the blush that burned through that thick face was covered by Jiao'er's homework. That way, he was able to barely maintain his dignity as a father.

Not long after that, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu called them in for dinner. After dinner, Jin Fengju diligently went to the study and personally sat with Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, helping them with their studies. It was only after Aunt Yu tended to the twins during bedtime that Jin Fengju finally crept over to Fu Qiuning's bedroom. In the past, whenever he stayed overnight, Fu Qiuning would always pointedly and expressly announce their bedroom arrangements before going to bed. There was no such announcement that night, which made his gut swell with courage as he entered his wife's room.

The first thing he saw was Fu Qiuning tracing patterns under the lamplight. [b3] He crept closer and said, "Can't you do this during the daytime? Why tire your eyes at night?" Then, he made for the kang bed and made a show of sitting on it and yawning expansively. He laughed and said, "I had thought of resting here after lunch and enjoying this wonderful yard filled with flowers and fragrant herbs. Ah, it must be so pleasant. Too bad my Second Uncle happened to receive his windfall on this very same day. I ended up having to play host and work hard all day instead."

Gumihou: … Jin Fengju being obvious about wanting to bed Fu Qiuning was… annoying but not strange. What was strange was Fu Qiuning (AR Qiuning, really) blatantly fluttering her eyelashes at every moment and poking the bear with a tee hee~ at every other moment, going 'mu' and 'pui' in others, blowing hot and cold like a hornee teenager.

It was so, so nope.

[a] Destroy the AR Qiuning:

[a1] looong paragraph that is basically 'humph, pui, humph' followed by 'kyaa~~'

[a2] Maids' reactions to FQN (once AR Qiuning had been yeeted)

[a3] Reduce the sad 'woo…' in FQN's thoughts

[a4] Yeeted 'AR Qiuning throbbing and salivating with desire for JFJ's charm'

[a5] Yeeted all deliberate and overtly obvious flirting from AR Qiuning to 'wait and watch' FQN.

[a6] Yeeted a looong paragraph about 'kyaa~~ why are you staring at this thin and ugly me~~? Muu, uwu, muu, haha~~'

[a7] It was all 'kyaa, kyaa teasing thoughts', switched it to 'should I really do this…?'

There was no 'agony of decision' at all. It felt like AR QN was all 'tee hee tee hee' all over the chapter, teasing 'poor JFJ'

[a8] Very obvious AR Qiuning's thoughts: Second Madam Wan, weren't you trying to harm me? It's just having sex. All I had to do was give up my body in exchange for you smashing your own feet with a stone, and I even get a cute handsome guy to go with it. Hmph hmph, why would I not happily take such a deal?

Fu Qiuning: *points at the above paragraph with a trembling finger*

Gumihou: *places a comforting hand on Fu Qiuning's shoulder*

[b] Nope to Ass Polishing:

[b1] Wow, JFJ so generous to give the maid wedding clothes… add 'could it be that he has a guilty conscience'?

[b2] What is this weird and OOC humility from?

Jin Fengju, however, never dreamed that he would be able to move Fu Qiuning. He still always thought that in her mind, he was a selfish and hateful man. So when someone praised him for being the number one most handsome man at that time, his heart would particularly not like to hear it, secretly thinking: Is being the number one most handsome man worth shit? I can't even make my own woman fall for me, ugly men are not as miserable as I am ah.

Even here, the author did not miss an opportunity to try and make readers feel sorry for him

[b3] JFJ being a lecher, a deluded lecher

[b4] Due to [a6], adjust response, still under 'deluded lecher' mode

Pill Bug TL Notes:

[2] 哀兵之策 Basically, puppy dog eyes. Feign weakness to win sympathy, then strike.

Gumihou: Didn't I say it was all a ploy?

Fu Qiuning: It was all a ploy

Pill Bug: An obvious ploy

Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "The Second Master is now the Lesser Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, a Third Rank Official, yes? Within this capital, although there are many princes and noblemen within, how many could compare themselves to the Duke of Jing's Dukedom? That's right, now that you are the Marquis, the emperor mentioned that he will build you an estate close to the West Palace. Is this necessary?"

Jin Fengju nodded, "Isn't it so? I have already submitted the letter of thanks and declined the offer. Our estate had always been this way. According to our ancestral rules, the family is not allowed to separate unless it could be split into 10,000 shares. Especially more so, since now that we are more prosperous, it is even more unthinkable. However, once the children have grown up, the space within the estate would no longer be enough. Therefore, a few days ago, Father bought the estate next to us. It used to belong to the Marquis of Xiangyang, whose family had been demoted. They have since moved to the south. Once the renovations are done, Uncle's branch of the family could move there and we'll have more space."

Fu Qiuning was aghast, "Isn't that too much space? Isn't this overly extravagant?"

Jin Fengju laughed, enjoying her startled expression. He sat up, only to lean against Qiuning. "Strictly speaking, Uncle moving out is not due to lack of space. However, now that he is the Lesser Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, he should have his own estate." As he spoke, he pressed his nose into Fu Qiuning's hair and sniffed. He smiled and said, "What did you use to wash your hair? It smells very good. It does not smell like the soap bean."

[1a] Fu Qiuning stiffened. She knew very well that boundaries were being tested right now. She forced herself not to react as Jin Fengju continued to sniff. Instead, she casually explained, "I did not use soap bean. Ground almond water makes the hair smoother and shinier… [1b]" As she spoke, the weight against her grew heavier as lips begin nibbling her hair. Suddenly, the pair of lips began to press itself against her face.

"Ah…" Fu Qiuning jumped, flinching away, but Jin Fengju had already lost all self-control and had rolled himself over Fu Qiuning, one arm around her waist, embracing her to his chest. Inside his normally clear and cool eyes were traces of lust. Looking at her, he said in a gravelly voice, "Qiuning, my good Qiuning, how long are you going to blame me? What should I do for you to willingly forgive me? Do you know how hard I have endured? I am close to my limit, however, I dare not offend you, otherwise, you will truly ignore me forever. Do you know, I am really afraid that I would one day lose control and cause you to hate me? And yet, I am even more afraid, afraid that you will hate me for this. Qiuning, you… what do you want me to do?"

His speech was close to incoherent. It was also because of this that one could tell that he was speaking from his heart [2]. Otherwise, if someone could still speak sweetly while in throes of passion, Qiuning would really suspect his sincerity.

[1c] Or, thought Fu Qiuning, this guy is talking through his loins at me.

[2a] At this time, she found herself looking at Jin Fengju's fervent eyes. Curious, she reached out to touch the handsome brows and the corner of the long lashes. She murmured, "Indeed, it certainly looks like you want me a lot at this time. I suppose I should be grateful for Lord Husband's affections towards the likes of me."

"No, no, not just this moment, but for a lifetime. Qiuning, have you ever tasted love? It is only now that I understand what loving a person means. True love means loving the person herself. It is nothing like desiring a calamitous beauty or sacrificing oneself on the altar of love. Even old age would never tarnish true love!" Jin Fengju's heart was beating like a drum, He had not thought that he would get lucky tonight. Qiuning did not push him away, then, then, did that mean that she was finally ready to open her heart to him?

"[1d] My dear Lord Husband, I must compliment you on your bedside talk. I'm sure my sisters also appreciated it," [1e] who knows whether he's a regular sweet talker or not, but, Fu Qiuning was curious to hear what he would say.

"If I say, that I have never spoken thus with anyone, including Wanying, would you believe me?" Jin Fengju hugged Fu Qiuning close. The burning in his loins was starting to hurt, but he still dared not act too hastily. He was afraid that if he moved too rashly, he would offend this hard-won, treasure-like woman in his arms. He had already seen how resolute and cold-hearted Fu Qiuning could be when it came to cutting off relations.

"Do you not feel sorry for them?" Fu Qiuning was not at all happy with this answer. In this era where wives were like clothes, to be discarded when worn out, whilst brothers were more like one's own arms, the more sincere Jin Fengju was to her, the more sorry she felt for Jiang Wanying and the others.

"Before I fell in love with you, I had always thought that I loved them. Now that I have you, I… cannot neglect them." Jin Fengju sighed deeply. "Qiuning, do you know, I hate that I did not meet you before our marriage. If we had known each other earlier, if I had known what true love was, how good would it have been? In this life, I wish to possess only you and never tease any other women. As it happens…fate pushed me down this path. I am not willing to let you down, nor am I willing to let them down either. Therefore… please forgive me."

"Unwilling to let me down, can't let them down…" Fu Qiuning [1f] sighed. "Look at you, the perfect example of the 'Fortunate Man from Qi [3]', and yet, here you are, showing a face of misery. [1g] Am I supposed to be sorry for you?" [1h]

"Qiuning, what are you thinking?" The poor Marquis still dared not move randomly. Although his hands were eager to tear Fu Qiuning's thin clothes off, he still dared not act without explicit permission.

[4] Fu Qiuning… had a lot of thoughts in her head right now.

First and foremost, should I or should I not, that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in mind to suffer the hidden blades and knives of this man's many wives or remain chaste in hopes that a better future would come by?' Her mind was starting to derail if she was thinking in European literature. Haha, and here she was, a professional in Chinese opera.

"Qiuning?"

[4] If the lizard dust or whatever had the power to prove a woman's v, she would be kicked out of the marquisate. Or, maybe not. This man would do everything he could to keep her inside this estate and… what then? She would end up owing him. The other women, including the elders such as Old Madam, would either lose their respect for her or find it difficult to protect her.

"Qiuning?"

[4] Assuming that the lizard dust works… let's assume it works. Would it not be better to be rid of her v now and turn the trap around and reverse uno those pesky women? If they actually launched that trap card on her, she could control the outcome and… potentially make things work out her way instead. Yes, perhaps that would be the best.

"Qiuning, if you do not wish to-"

[4] Fu Qiuning finally turned clear eyes at Jin Fengju. This man's eyes were nearly watering with fear, lust and perhaps pain. That's right, she had only one card on her person. It was time to use it. With a smile, she said, "This humble woman was thinking, does my Lord Husband wants me to undress him?"

[2b] To Jin Fengju, the smile on Fu Qiuning's face appeared utterly charming and sweet in the dim light. All scruples gone, he seized Fu Qiuning, pressed her down hard and leaned over to kiss her.

The first glimmer of light was just reaching the room and Jin Fengju opened his eyes. He looked over and saw that Fu Qiuning was in deep sleep next to him. The corners of his lips curled into a sweet smile that made his already attractive demeanour even more charming.

The smile became knowing as Jin Fengju revelled in the way life had finally reached the zenith of richness and fulfilment. He leaned over to carefully peck Fu Qiuning's cheek, the pressure no more than a brush of a dragonfly's wing before raising his head.

Then, he carefully climbed out of bed and was about to wash up when he heard a lazy voice say, "Why are you up so early?"

Jin Fengju immediately turned back to sit on the bed. With a smile, he said, "I need to attend court." Seeing his wife's sleepy eyes, staring dazedly at him, he rubbed his own face cautiously. "What is it? Have you forgotten your husband?"

"Jin Fengju, you are truly blessed with good looks." [1i] Then, she sighed and rolled away.

[1i] The smile faded from Jin Fengju's face, "Qiuning?"

"I'm tired."[1j]

The smile returned to Jin Fengju's face as he said in an indulgent voice, "Yes, yes, I'm sorry, I was too wilful last night. I really could not help myself." Jin Fengju could not help but lean in to kiss Qiuning once more on the cheek. With a little laugh he said, "Well, as it is your first time, it's inevitable that you will feel uncomfortable. That's right, when are you planning to move into Elegant Mansion? In my opinion, it's better to be earlier than later. How about tomorrow? Today, I have to escort the Empress Dowager to Ganlu Temple to offer incense. I'm afraid I would not be back tonight, but tomorrow…"

A sudden snort cut him off and Fu Qiuning turned around to glare at him. "Who is moving to Elegant Mansion? You never said anything about this yesterday. Did you not already promise that you will let me stay here for a few years? Not even a year had passed but already you wish to force me out. I ask the Young Marquis once again, do you remember any of your promises at all?"

Jin Fengju was shocked. He was stunned, stupefied. He scratched his head confusedly. The number of times he had ever been truly confused was rare. Therefore, he could only confusedly say, "In the past, we were only husband and wife in name, but, after last night… Qiuning has become my true wife, therefore, naturally…"

[4a] A sharp laugh cut him off. She sat up to look him in the eyes, "Is that right? So, it turns out that I have to move the moment I became your true wife? If that's the case, I'd rather remain a wife in name."

Suddenly anxious, Jin Fengju said, "How can that be? Qiuning, my dear aunt [5], this is not the time to be willful. Last night you clearly gave over yourself to me. Could last night really be erased just because you changed your mind?"

Fu Qiuning's smile was cold, "You are right, facts could not be changed. The fact that you have promised me did not change either. I never said that I would move into Elegant Mansion after spending the night with you. If you hate Night Breeze Pavilion for being too far away, don't you have other women closer at hand? Feel free to visit them instead. I am no jealous wife."

[2b] In Jin Fenju's eyes, although Fu Qiuning said that she was no jealous wife, she was clearly being jealous, ah. Grateful that Fu Qiuning was not completely as cold and ruthless as before, he happily nodded and coaxed, "Yes, yes, yes, it's all up to you. Since you like it here, stay a little longer. I shall come and see you tomorrow. That's right, have Aunt Yu and Yu Jie stew something nourishing for your body."

Gumihou: Someone gimme bleach. I need to bleach my eyes. This is so torturous. Also, Gumi had never been so thankful for Chinese censorship. .All hail China's censorship!

Also, see that final few paragraphs? Would AR Qiuning actually say such things? She wouldn't, that's why she had to be yeeted away.

On a more serious note, all the text about how JFJ was suffering from his 'burning loins' and not putting his hands immediately on FQN because he 'feared she would reject him forever' is really harmful to women and partners in general. As a rule, one should never 'put their hands' on other people because they don't want it or did not give explicit consent, not because 'you fear they would hate you forever'.

Because this ultimately leads to: If you don't care whether they hate you or not, it is fine to stick your thing into someone's v or backside.

Dude, no. That's… no.

[1] Yeet the AR Qiuning

[1a] Right, let's interrupt the 'ehehe, ehehe' with some gloomy thoughts.

[1b] Delete extra wordy words from FQN that's basically extra flirting and a 'pui!' aka 'humph! Go talk to your other wives, humph!' kind of talk

[1c] Add more thought for Qiuning that is not influenced by AR Qiuning, as per [2]

[1d] Delete traces of jealousy and add spite instead

[1e] Delete 'kyaa~~ I know he must be sincere, but, *pant pant* I mustn't give in easily~~', replaced with 'tch'

[1f] Delete 'tears running down her cheeks'

Basically: Sob, sob, boo hoo, I'm so touched. You're such a good man, waah, I'm so lucky. Take me!

Yeah, nope

[1g] Delete 'there is no man as stupid as you who did not know how to enjoy your fortune' stream of consciousness thoughts from the errant spirit

Butt polishing here, by AR Qiuning. Nope. Are we supposed to be sorry for this fellow? Seriously?

[1h] Deleted AR Qiuning's excited: Yes, the man in front of you should be a peerless good man in this era, right? Give yourself to him, even if this love becomes weak in the future, but at least, at this moment, he is sincere, and so is yourself. In two lifetimes, it is worthwhile to have such a touching moment of love, isn't it?

Fu Qiuning: I will stab you.

Gumihou: If I don't have to translate this, I could have skipped the entire chapter altogether

[1i] Add an element of disdain. Cut off JFJ's opportunity to go 'tee hee, you can stay in bed' by having Fu Qiuning just roll away from him instead of bracing herself to get up.

[1j] Deleted 'oh my waist, oh you beast, oh you fox who ate the chicken~~ Puff!'

[2] Cough, yeah, from his heart, sure. Not from somewhere lower, like the one-eyed snake's nest.

[2a] Watch how Gumihou ruined this sweet and romantic moment

At this time, her eyes fell on Jin Fengju's affectionate eyes, and she couldn't help stretching out her hand, touching Jin Fengju's handsome eyebrows and long eyelashes, and murmured softly: "These eyes have always been the deepest. What big emotions and fluctuations, but now…they have dyed me such a rich color, Lord Husband, Fengju, at least at this moment, you are sincere to me, aren't you?"

Blerggghhh

Pill Bug, you had better suffer with me!

[2b] Adjust it so that the extra affection was all in his deluded head. The things that happened did happen though.

[3] Happy Man from Qi – idiom for a man with many wives and concubines.

[4] These are probably the most important paragraphs that were not in this chapter. In place of it was the hideous [1h]. Gumi went Shakespeare… apologies, but Gumi's knowledge of Chinese opera is limited, but please pretend that FQN has some basic knowledge of some famous European literature.

[4a] Cut out the meandering thoughts to swift action for impact.

[5] 'my dear aunt' is a way Chinese people address those who act arrogant or spoilt. If a child is 'a little ancestor' it's a euphemism for how spoilt they are since the kid is treated like an 'ancestor', ie, one has to cater to all their needs and wants. Same as for 'aunt, uncle, granny, grandpa'.

"It's just a night in bed, it's not like I am with child. What's there to nourish? Enough, you go on your way to court. Don't make trouble here," she moved to get up again when Jin Fengju said, "Alright, I'll go after I wash up. Sleep a little longer. Don't get up, I won't be eating breakfast here."

Fu Qiuning paused. [1a] A prick of conscience stabbed her. That's right, she had just used this man last night and she was now kicking him out without breakfast. Isn't that considered rude? Should she at least feed the man before making him leave? What's the proper after xx etiquette anyway?

[1b] Finally, she got up and said simply, "Have breakfast first," before leaving for the kitchen, ignoring Jin Fengju's increasingly faint protest. [1c] It was no trouble throwing some leftover rice into a pot of hot water and letting it boil away to a plain porridge while she gathered up some random pickles, a salted duck egg and other small side dishes for Jin Fengju.

After setting the tray down, she leaned against the kang bed to stare into the distance, [1b] wondering just what life was going to be like from then onwards. As for Jin Fengju, the man was eating very slowly, as though every single pickle and every drop of porridge was his last meal. It wasn't until Jin Ming came in, and only after repeated urging, did the man finally leave.

[2] Aunt Yu and Yu Jie also got up early, but not early enough to serve Jin Fengju in time for him to leave for court. When they realised that Fu Qiuning had personally cooked and served the master, they felt apologetic [2b] and hurried off to do their work. However, when they got to their mistress' bedroom, they were gobsmacked.

Wait, did Madam and the Young Marquis spend the night together? Isn't this wonderful news? Has Madam finally come around?

In the end, Aunt Yu was the smarter one. While pretending to tidy up the unusually messy bed, she spotted some very obvious red (and white) stains. As expected! Madam had spent the night with the Master! Hurrah! Nearly wriggling with glee, she whispered, "Madam…" to herself, but did not know how else to express her happiness. Should she say, 'Congratulations on finally consummating your marriage?' Was that too explicit? Other congratulatory remarks she could think of included words like 'Pleasures of Fish and Water' or 'Passionate Rain and Clouds' were a little more euphemistic, but they were also too explicit, ah. After agonising for a long time, she finally blurted out, "Is Madam going to sing 'Husband & Wife Return Together'?"

Fu Qiuning [1d] coughed, luckily she had not been drinking tea when Aunt Yu asked her question. [3a] She had been wondering how the maids would bring up the elephant, or rather, her v to her face. Looks like Aunt Yu hit upon the perfect balance of taste and allusion. On the other hand, Yu Jie was looking around stupidly, saying, "Why would Madam suddenly sing Husband and Wife Return Together? [2c] Are you stupid, Aunt Yu? Madam only sings when Master is here, have you forgotten?"

Instead of answering, Aunt Yu raised a hand to point at the kang bed. Finally, Yu Jie got the hint and excitedly ran over to look at the blood stain. [1d] Fu Qiuning sighed to herself. Looks like her privates are no longer private…

In a tired voice [1e], Fu Qiuning said, "What's so interesting about it? Won't you experience it one day too? Aunt Yu, put that stained bed cover away. Unfortunately, [1e] I might have to take it out and parade it before an audience soon…"

"Take it out and parade?" Yu Jie happily helped Aunt Yu fold the bedsheets, thinking: [2c] Is Madam going to make a flag and parade it around? Kyaa~ Madam is that proud of having caught the Master?

Once the bedsheets had been changed, she helped Fu Qiuning put up her hair into a simple bun, complete with a single pearl hairpin. Lips pursing, Yu Jie said crossly, "The Young Marquis gifted Madam so many accessories, but Madam barely touched even a tenth of them. Is Madam planning to let those phoenix hairpins and pretty buyao [4] eat dust in their boxes?"

"You like them?" said Fu Qiuning [1f] with a faint smile. "When you get married, I'll gift you some. I have already prepared a set of accessories for Aunt Yu's wedding. As someone who had shared all my bitter days, this is the least I should do for you." She stood up gracefully before pausing. [3b] That's right, Jin Fengju would not be in tonight. Just yesterday, Jiang Wanying had poked for information about her v. So, if she was Jiang Wanying and desperate to get rid of a rival…

She turned to Yu Jie, "Order the maids to clean up the place. If I'm not mistaken, we should have some visitors soon. If not today, then in the next three to five days. I fear that Night Breeze Pavilion will become very lively very soon."

"Madam? [2d]" Yu Jie was staring at Fu Qiuning worriedly.

Aunt Yu [2e] looked at the folded, stained bedsheet in her arms, "Madam, does it have anything to do with this…"

Fu Qiuning [1e] sighed, "Just carry on as usual. I'm sure you can imagine the reason if you try. Do you really think Second Madam Wan, the granddaughter of a duke, would be happy in her current place? [1g] It's one thing when I am not actively poking her eye out with my presence, but with the Young Marquis running here all the time, it's only a matter of time before they strike at us."

Aunt Yu and Yu Jie [2f] fretted. "Wh-what should we do?"

[3c] "What can we do? Just defend," said Fu Qiuning. "This is the reward for getting along too well with the head male of the family. Whatever, there's no need to overthink matters. Go and get the children ready for school."

By then, the other servants had already woken up and helped the twins and their two study friends get ready. Qiuning personally inspected their bookbags after breakfast, before finally sending them off. Once the children were gone, she turned to Yu Jie, "Pack up some of the snacks we made yesterday. We'll bring them with us when we greet the Old Madam later. She likes crisp and delicately fragrant pastries the most. So, let's bring her some Osmanthus Cakes and Flaky Almond Pastries."

Yu Jie accepted the order. Then, Fu Qiuning returned to her room to continue with her sketching. Though she now periodically visited Health & Longevity Court, she would never allow herself to go too early. After all, there was no reason to subject herself to Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying's presence more than absolutely necessary, especially since the Old Madam [5] did not care one way or another.

Please read this at kitchennovel dot com ~

What she did not know was that, far from being lively and laughter-filled as usual, the visitor's room of Health & Longevity Court was rather gloomy today. Instead of the usual bustle of people, there was only Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying facing off against the old lady.

"Is that so? Surely this cannot be true? Look at how close and intimate Fengju and Fu'shi are, clearly, their relationship is very good. If they did not perform the proper ceremonies as husband and wife, where did this mutual respect and affection come from?" Seated on the couch, the Old Madam slowly rotated the tea cover as she studied the two women before her.

Just now, Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying had dismissed the servants and personally reported Fu'shi to her. The main crime was that Fu'shi had refused to share a room with Jin Fengju. On the Old Madam's side, she knew that this daughter-in-law and granddaughter-in-law refused to give up on driving Fu Qiuning out. This would be their second attempt now.

In fact, the Old Madam already has some thoughts on the matter. Whether a woman is a virgin, she could tell in one glance. Therefore, she knew that her grandson had not spent the night with Fu Qiuning. On this matter, her grandson must have felt ashamed about taking the initiative to push forward first. Since he did not plan to clash with Fu'shi about it, Old Madam Jin merely closed one eye on the incident. However, which parent or grandparent was not partial to their offspring? Therefore, the old lady tried to give Qiuning hints in the form of advice. However, seeing nothing much comes out of her subtle hints, she decided to just let the young couple muddle along at their own pace. Now that Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying brought this matter up so suddenly, though the Old Madam appeared calm on the surface, inside, she was shocked.

"This matter is absolutely true, this granddaughter-in-law dares to stake her head on it. Old Madam, you have seen with your own eyes how Cousin treats Fu'shi. Only, who could have thought that she would have such guts? No matter how Cousin had treated her in the past, it was all karma planted by her own parents and thus, the treatment she received never should be blamed on her husband's head. Leave aside how obedient and doting Cousin is to her now, anyone with a shred of conscience should have shed tears of gratitude and abide by women's morals and principles to have their husband love them again.

But she! Instead of being grateful as she should, she had become proud and arrogant after being spoilt and pampered by Cousin. Not only that, she threatened Cousin with the past and lorded it over him like a shrew. Women like her, with guts filled with snakes and scorpions, should never be retained within the estate. I understand that it is not my place to say anything, but… but I am too outraged on Cousin's behalf!"

Following Jian Wanying's indignant statement, Madam Jiang stood poised and indifferent as she gravely said, "Indeed, things that are in the past should remain in the past. She absolutely should never, and could never, disregard her husband's wishes and harbour a grudge. Such a woman, let alone a daughter of the Zhenjiang Heir, should she be a daughter of an ordinary official, a duke's estate should never tolerate it. Therefore, this daughter-in-law came to ask Old Madam for advice. To see how best to handle this matter."

Old Madam Jin snorted coldly, "Haven't you two already decided? Why even come to my place? Now that everything in the estate is under your control, this matter should naturally be handled as you please."

Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying turned white at the obvious implication that she was displeased by their actions. However, for the sake of chasing out this thorn in the eye called Fu Qiuning, they could only risk offending Old Madam for now. Once that woman had been driven out, they could slowly wheedle their way back into her good graces in the future. After all, they were one family. It would be impossible for the Old Madam to completely disregard their relationship as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Therefore, Madam Jiang stood up straight to say, "Yes, since Old Madam is not willing to manage this matter, this daughter-in-law will question Fu'shi with Wanying. If she continues to remain stubborn, there is no need for her to serve Fengju any longer. How could a mere woman like her look down on a dignified marquis?" with that, she turned to leave.

Behind her, Old Madam's voice said, "Hold on. Have you consulted Fengju on this matter? Was Fengju the one who told you that he did not complete the husband and wife ceremony?"

Madam Jiang went still. Then, she turned around to respectfully say, "It is Wanying who asked Fu'shi. That woman even flaunts her chastity as something like a great feat. Perhaps she feels that she is being impressive for having ridden on her husband's head and holding her chastity hostage. Old Madam, just think, how could such a cheap and frivolous woman be a daughter-in-law of a duke's family? As for Fengju's side, is there anything Old Madam doesn't know? He has been bewitched by that woman, to the point that he is now confused and disorientated, having completely lost his direction. Could he still view this matter with any objectivity?"

"I believe that it is still best to consult with Fengju first. Otherwise, once he returns, would he not harbour dissatisfaction? You two should understand on whose credit we may now call ourselves a dukedom. He is no longer your son, but a master in his own right. If you discipline his wife without him knowing, isn't it too inappropriate?"

The Old Madam swallowed the last of her tea and turned to Luo Cui, "Bring me my cloak. It's been days since I've gone out. There is some pain in my legs, but no matter, now that things have come to this point, I shall go with you. If that Fu'shi refuses to repent, even I would not tolerate it."

Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying were startled. However, after some consideration, they thought: This is good too. We know just what kind of person Fu Qiuning is. Someone who would break rather than bend. She refused to share a room with Jin Fengju out of resentment and no other reason. If we go and interrogate her on her crimes now, we could drive her out using the women's principles. According to her personality, she would rather be dismissed and banished than agree to serve Jin Fengju for the rest of her life.

Speaking of which, Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying's assessment of Fu Qiuning's personality was fairly accurate. However, what they did not expect was that Fu Qiuning would be moved by Jin Fengju's persistent attention. [6] That their actions had actually pushed her into taking that final, drastic action that was almost akin to cutting her nose to spite her face.

[Gumihou: …is this why White Pear Flower had been pushing AR Qiuning into FQN? That without 'lurrrve' one can't do the deed? Excuse you?]

[1] Yeet the AR Qiuning

[1a] AR Qiuning was all 'nooo you must be hungryyy, eat~ eat~'

Maintain the breakfast scene but let it be motivated by guilt rather than 'kyaa~'

[1b] Deleted AR Qiuning's 'How can that be? Won't you be hungry? Who knows whether there will be anything to eat? What if you have to wait till noon etc etc'

Fu Qiuning: Isn't that… Jiang Wanying?

Gumihou: Sure sounds like her to me.

[1c] Instead of 'make special breakfast uwu', just throw some stuff together

[1d] Deleted 'Puuu~ of laughter', because this is no laughing matter.

[1e] Replaced 'Pun pun, humph, anger' with 'tiredly' because she basically has to show her private business, how can anyone be cheerful at this?

[1f] Replaced 'with a smile' with 'a faint smile'. Doing her best to stay strong

*sob*

[1g] Replaced typical 'humph, let's see her methods, hehehehe' with 'sigh, whyyyy'

[2] Annoying maids

[2a] Give a reason why they did not manage to serve JFJ but still manage to catch sight of him.

[2b] Delete 'they saw spring blooming on their mistress' brows'

Gumihou: …your maids are better than lizard dust.

Fu Qiuning covers her face.

Gumihou: I'll change it so they saw the 'spring scene' on the bed instead of your face.

[2c] So, Yu Jie is being particularly stupid in this chapter. Might as well play it up in the following paragraphs.

[2d] Yu Jie is really breaking records for being the doofiest of doof. Return some intelligence to her. Instead of going 'Eh? Eeehhhh?' at every other thing FQN says, be more like usual herself.

[2e] Aunt Yu is suddenly vomiting information left and right. Reduce the blerggggh.

[2f] Instead of the maids going 'hehehe, our madam has a plan' give a more… 'madam is being targeted…? What should we do?!' feel

[3] Wet Blanket – Here to bring down all 'tee hee~'

[3a] Replace 'tee hee' with 'seriously?'

[3b] Add detail, 'JFJ will not be in tonight'. Instead of focussing on 'tee hee~ I'm so clever~' lay out the thought process behind the following action.

[3c] Add reaction thanks to [2f]

[4] Buyao, literally 'step swing', so basically hair pins with swaying accessories

[5] Old Madam's hypocrisy. Replace 'would not blame' with 'would not care'

[6] Deleted: That she had been moved by his affection. That she had been resisting his advances because she had been forcibly suppressing the growing affection in her heart… that they are now truly husband and wife~~~

Dude. No. That's sick.

A majestic entourage was making its way towards Night Breeze Pavilion. When Xu'shi and Huo'shi heard about this magnificent parade, they quickly changed clothes and rushed over to join the fun. Though they both hated Jiang Wanying, they also did not like Fu Qiuning. Any woman who could take Jin Fengju's love away was their enemy. If these two Madams come to blows, whichever side won or lost would only benefit them. Therefore, how could they miss the opportunity to spectate this wonderful show?

Yu Jie and Aunt Yu were in the Yong Cui Garden behind the false stone mountains, collecting apricot blossom branches when all of a sudden, they saw a group of people come trooping through. From the looks of it, they were heading for Night Breeze Pavilion. The two of them exchanged a glance. They thought of Fu Qiuning's words that morning and both quickly hurried back, still clutching the apricot branches in their arms.

They rushed inside, just in time to see that Fu Qiuning had changed her clothes, ready to leave for Health & Longevity Court. Seeing her maids, she smiled and said, "You're done collecting the branches? Good, go fetch the snacks, we shall leave now."

"Madam, I think there's no need to go. The excitement you mentioned this morning, I fear it will be upon us soon," Yu Jie gasped, patting her chest. "Just now, this maid and Aunt Yu were behind the fake mountain to collect apricot branches when we saw a large group of people heading this way. Although they are still quite far away, I believe that Old Madam and Elder Madam should be among them. There were two sedan chairs in the group. If not the elder ladies, who else could it be?"

Fu Qiuning [1a] was a little surprised. "What? They are here already?" Then, she sneered, "Good, it's better to get over this matter quickly. Come, we should prepare ourselves to receive Old Madam and Elder Madam."

After that, Aunt Yu and Yu Jie rushed out to prepare. Fu Qiuning [1b] allowed herself a moment of weakness as she leaned back and closed her eyes in contemplation. Did she do the right thing? With the arrival of those people, if they prove her lack of v, she would forever be stuck inside this place. It is a completely different matter if she had wanted to be here, but… did she? Is it better to be here than anywhere else? Jin Fengju wanted her, that was for sure. For now anyway. Is it better to milk all she could from this man's affection before it inevitably fizzles out? She could at least negotiate for a shop or a restaurant for herself before the guy inevitably moves on to someone else, right?

At the very least, now that the [1c] rice had been cooked, they would not be able to mess with her as much if she stays within the estate. [1b] However, since they dare to come and disturb her peace, they should compensate her in some ways.

The sound of the gate opening interrupted her thoughts. She breathed in deeply and slowly breathed out. Finally, she stood up and, after collecting the apricot branches left by Aunt Yu and Yu Jie, walked towards the courtyard.

When she opened the door, she immediately saw Old Madam and Madam Jiang. With a service smile on her face, Fu Qiuning stepped down the few stairs and stopped before the massive group. "Why has Old Madam come to this humble woman's Night Breeze Pavilion? Just now, this humble woman even bade Yu Jie and Aunt Yu collect some apricot branches to bring to Health & Longevity Court. Unexpectedly, Old Madam arrived just as this humble woman was about to set out." As she spoke, she helped the Old Ancestor out of the sedan chair. Then, she turned to Madam Jiang, "Elder Madam and Little Sister are here too? Everyone's presence has brought light to this humble dwelling."

Madan Jiang and Jiang Wanying openly snorted together. They simultaneously thought: No matter how flexible your tongue might be, today, we shall certainly have you driven out. They were about to speak when Old Madam heartily laughed and said, "I guessed that you might come these two days. Oh, are these for me? You sure know how to get the best at the least expense. Do you think I do not have blossoming apricot flowers in my court? Do I need your little favours? These things are barely worth half a copper coin. If put in charge of a household, I dare say you'll be excellent at defending your family's wealth."

Fu Qiuning [1d] beamed back, "Old Madam has wronged this humble woman. The apricot branches are just a side gift, this humble woman had already prepared Flaky Almond Pastries and Osmanthus Cakes for Old Madam. [1d] Since Old Madam had personally visited this humble woman's place, do allow this humble woman to honour you with these small snacks."

Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying patiently stood on the side as the two made their cheerful exchange. Both knew in their hearts that the Old Madam would protect Fu Qiuning. However, this time, they had already made up their mind to risk offending the Old Madam. If they failed in their mission today, there was still the Duke of Jing, Jin Yu, who valued the face of the family most. On the day that Fu Qiuning entered the family, if Jin Fengju himself did not agree to it, according to the old man's temper, he would have fought against the forced marriage to the end.

If he were to find out that this forced-in daughter-in-law was so proud and arrogant, to the point that she refused to put his son in her eyes, he would be the first to demand a divorce. When that time comes, even with the Old Madam and Jin Fengju's protection, things would not be so easy for Fu Qiuning.

With this thought keeping their breasts afloat with confidence, they continued to listen to the banter between Fu Qiuning and the Old Madam. After a long while, Fu Qiuning finally turned to say, "Has Elder Madam come to accompany the Old Ancestor? Or is Madam here for this humble woman? Madam's expression does not look too good."

Madam Jiang snorted, "You still know how to care about me? What a heart." She looked around once, seeing that aside from the four mistresses of the house in the room, there were only Aunt Yu and Yu Jie as well as her own two personal maids and Jiang Wanying's Qiu Xia. She addressed Ling Long, one of her personal maids, "Go and guard this place. Do not let anyone close. Humph, family shame should not be seen outside."

The Old Madam knew that her daughter-in-law and granddaughter-in-law were chomping at the bit to appear on stage, therefore, she said nothing and continued to drink tea and chew on her snacks. Privately, she thought: Fengju, ah, Fengju, my good grandson. Your granny lent you a hand today so that you may stand tall in the future. You should quickly make up with Qiuning and become a truly loving husband and wife. When that time comes, you must remember this favour from me.

It turned out that Old Madam had already made her decision. Even if Fu Qiuning turned out to still be a maiden, so long as she roughly pushed the fault of her maidenhood on Jin Fengju, she believes that her grandson would be willing to bear this black pot. At that time, if he still wanted to be with Fu Qiuning, the woman would owe him one and no longer have any reason to deny him. This way, she could also help her poor grandson achieve his fervent wishes a little earlier.

The Old Madam also understood how upright and outspoken Fu Qiuning could be. However, she also saw more deeply than Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying. It could not have been easy for Fu Qiuning to survive these few years. While embarrassment was one thing, as a divorced woman, Fu Qiuning would have a lot more to lose. The Zhenjiang Palace would not accept a divorced shu-born daughter back into their family. As a survivor, surely she should know that her best chance to live through this ordeal was a compromise with Jin Fengju.

It could be said that there were many thoughts going through everyone's mind right then. Once Ling Long went out, Madam Jiang snorted coldly and turned to Yu Jie and Aunt Yu, "You two, kneel. I have something to ask you."

Aunt Yu and Yu Jie obediently knelt as commanded with a soft 'yes'. The two maids knelt [2a] fearfully, not daring to look up.

"I ask you, ever since the Young Marquis had entered Night Breeze Pavilion from spring onwards, has your madam completed the husband and wife ceremony with him?" asked Madam Jiang coldly from her seat.

"This… has been done," Yu Jie [2b] answered haltingly. Then, more boldly, she said, "Yes, the ceremony had been completed."

"You dare, why are you stammering over this matter? If the ceremony has indeed been performed, then why do you sound so hesitant?" Jiang Wanying snapped, pouncing at this flaw.

Yu Jie [2c] squeaked at being questioned so directly, but rallied to say, "It is not our place as maids to question this. This maid never thought about it, and barely just recalled the matter of Aunt Yu mentioning putting a bedsheet away without washing."

Aunt Yu interjected from the side, "Indeed, to answer Old Madam, Elder Madam and Second Madam Wan, this maid had personally put away the bedsheet. Therefore, this maid believes that the husband and wife ceremony has been completed."

Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying exchanged a glance. They looked a little surprised, but determined that these two maids were just desperately covering up for their mistress. Observe just how hesitant their answer had been, their behaviours were just too suspicious. Jiang Wanying sneered, "What was that? Already shared a room? Then, why did they not bring the stained sheets for Mother-in-law to inspect?" According to the rules of this era, after a couple consummates their marriage, the daughter-in-law must prove their virginity to their mother-in-law with the bedsheets."

Aunt Yu and Yu Jie exchanged a look before saying [2d] stupidly, "This… we maids do not know."

Fu Qiuning's answer was a mild, "No one asked me to." [2e]

Jiang Wanying was immediately [3] incensed by Fu Qiuning's short reply. She sneered and said slowly, "Is that so? Since that is the case, now that both Mother-in-law and the Old Madam are here, surely Elder Sister would not mind showing them the bedsheet? This is, after all, something that Elder Sister should have done."

Fu Qiuning [4a] nearly rolled her eyes out of her head. Why don't you just ask me to open my legs for inspection now? Instead of speaking her vulgar thoughts out loud, she turned to Aunt Yu, "Bring out the sheets." Then, she turned to the questioning women, "Mother-in-law and Little Sister clearly suspect this humble woman. Surely you could find out one way or another by asking the Young Marquis? Why the need to do this? It's too shameful."

Madam Jiang snorted coldly. Jiang Wanying tittered on the side, "Who doesn't know that my husband favours Elder Sister to death? If asked, I fear he would fall all over himself to deceive us. Elder Sister's skills are too great, to cause Lord Husband to stick to her like this, this little sister wishes to learn from Elder Sister as well. Only, I fear Elder Sister would not be willing to enlighten me."

Fu Qiuning [4b] smiled pityingly at her, "What is Little Sister talking about? You are Lord Husband's childhood friend. How could I ever compete with a friendship that had been nurtured since young? Within this estate, if asked who adores Lord Husband the most, if not Little Sister, who could it be? In this estate, even Concubine Huo and Concubine Xu have their own children, only I am childless, with only two adopted ones on my side. It would be more believable to say that I am the least favoured."

Jiang Wanying was really angered. This Fu Qiuning was obviously mocking her for not her failure to capture a man's heart. You, the childhood friend, have the nerve to ask me how to please your husband? Moreover, I do not even have a single biological child under my knee and was abandoned for so many years, yet, I am still able to suppress you. Aren't you ashamed of yourself?

As she continued to clench her teeth, Aunt Yu finally returned with a white bedsheet. They all watch as Aunt Yu blushingly unfolded the sheet before Madam Jiang, Jiang Wanying and the Old Madam. After all, Aunt Yu was still a virgin and therefore could not help but be shy over such matters.

Gumihou: The Duke of Jing aka Jin Fengju's dad, would 'fought the marriage to the end if Jin Fengju himself did not agree to it'? Are they trying to whitewash the Jin Family with an 'upright' head of the family and a 'supportive Old Madam'? Just where were these people when FQN was banished away and the twins abandoned to die?

Oh wait, the Duke was 'displeased by Jin Fengju's action' back then, but not enough to do anything about it. That's about as useful as sending thoughts and prayers to help someone.

[1] Yeet the AR Qiuning:

[1a] In place of 'leapt to her feet in shock', go with 'a little surprised'

[1b] In place of 'oh, whew~! So lucky we did the deed yesterday~~ nyaha~! Orei! Rejoice~!', go with 'did I do the right thing?'

[1c] 'Rice had been cooked', a euphemism for having the v taken, has negative connotations of 'we can never go back'. Gumi used it here in FQN's thoughts to give the impression of 'I have no choice but to go forward now'

[1d] Give FQN some dignity, please. Instead of 'smiling hastily' just 'smiled back', instead of 'oh my oh my' or 'blablabla nervous word vomit, bla' just give a short answer

[1e] Replaced a looonnnggg ass explanation of 'I live far away… 7 years… empty house… no one asked… put away… etc…' with less than 10 word reply.

[2] Correct the inconsistent IQ levels of the maids

[2a] The maids 'knelt, knowing the weaker they acted, the louder the slap on the Jiang Wanying and Madam Jiang's faces'

Gumihou: … weren't you two a pair of idiots just a chapter ago? You are master minds now?

Just have them 'knelt in fear' along with all the implications that follow.

[2b] The doofiest of doofs is suddenly 'bolder and smarter than Aunt Yu?' What?

[2c] Yu Jie's answer was 'neither hurried nor slow'

Fu Qiuning: Who is that?

Gumihou: A new character?

[2d] Switch out 'calmly' for 'stupidly', and deleted 'knowing that their part in this charade is over and it was time to hand the show over to FQN' because there's giving information and then there's shoving information down a reader's throat

[3] Adjust Jiang Wanying's reply as per [1e]. She's going to be angry regardless, so, let her anger be at FQN's short and impertinent reply.

[4] More canon than canon Fu Qiuning's reply:

[4a] Put more thoughts in her head other than 'light blush' and 'calmly'

[4b] 'Smile lightly'? Go right ahead and 'smile pityingly' at this poor woman

Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying were both taken aback. They had not expected such a thing to exist!

Jiang Wanying was gaping at Fu Qiuning in shock. However, as soon as their eyes met, Fu Qiuning quickly looked away. A clear sign of guilt! She recalled that day she tried to probe Fu'shi's maidenhood status at Clear Soft Pavilion. If that person truly was in a relationship with her cousin back then, she would not have acted like this. Jiang Wanying was sure of it. Somehow, she must have spooked this woman and the other side had been prepared for their arrival. As for the blood on the sheets, who knew whether it was duck, chicken or pig's blood split across it? Who could tell the difference? It was all red.

Thus, bolstered by her reasoning, she looked towards Madam Jiang. Seeing the caution in her aunt's eyes, she knew that Madam Jiang was on the verge of retreating. Looks like she was still carrying the shadows of 'Losing the rice when trying to steal chicken' from the last time they had confronted Fu'shi. However, they cannot retreat at this point.

With her mind made up, she was about to speak out when the Old Madam said indifferently, "The sheets have been seen, surely you should give it up? Once we return, find out which servant had been spreading these unsound rumours, drag them out and have them beaten with sticks." In the end, the Old Madam was the one with sharper eyes. Now that Fu Qiuning had stayed silent instead of pressing her advantage, she knew that she was giving Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying an opportunity to save face and retreat with some dignity. The matter should have been let go at this point.

But, how could Jiang Wanying allow such a good opportunity to drive Fu'shi out so easily? She had been planning for this moment for so long, there was no way she was going to give up halfway. Therefore, she stood straight to say, "Old Ancestor, forgive this granddaughter-in-law for my impertinence, but blood on the bedsheets could be faked. However, there is one thing that could not be faked. If Elder Sister and Lord Husband had truly shared a room, I wonder, do you dare to try this thing?"

Fu Qiuning also stood up, her reply was hot and curt as she said, "You have already seen the sheets, why are you still being so suspicious? When Little Sister entered Lord Husband's chamber back then, did you also face this kind of questioning? Aside from the bedsheet, how else do you expect me to prove it? No matter what, I am still the Young Marquis' official wife. Do you, as a Secondary Wife, have the qualifications to inspect my person?"

By then, Jiang Wanying was more and more convinced that Fu Qiuning was hiding a guilty conscience. She stiffened her neck and said harshly, "This little sister has no such qualification, but Mother-in-law does not lack this qualification. My dear Elder Sister should not compare yourself with this little sister. When this little sister married in, all proper ceremonies had been performed with my Lord Husband, and it is the same for the concubines that came afterwards.

Elder Sister is the only exception. You have been alone for six years. Now, the Young Marquis loves and spoils Elder Sister, but Elder Sister remains stubborn and dared to remain indifferent, to the point of refusing to complete the marriage ceremony with him. Such an arrogant and contemptible person like Elder Sister, our dukedom could never keep you."

The Old Madam sighed, thinking: From ancient times, there were numerous examples of people trying to be too clever and ending up harming themselves with their own cleverness while trying to cause harm to others. Often, such harm happened due to vicious and selfish human nature. Judging from Jiang Wanying's words, it was clear that she would not stop until Fu Qiuning was forced out of the family. Indeed, she could not blame Fu'shi for setting a trap for her rival.

It was almost funny to see Wan girl already with one foot in the trap, but still not knowing how to stop. Indeed, she seemed almost eager to put her other foot in, anxious to go after Fu'shi even as the woman deliberately retreated. Well, such a jealous and vicious woman ought to be taught a lesson.

As she enjoyed the show before her, the Old Madam swallowed the words that came to her lips and continued to drink her tea slowly. Her eyelids barely flickered as Fu Qiuning sneered, "I see, so the warm and affectionate Young Sister I see most times is all an affectation? So, this is how you truly think of me. To you, I am a thorn in your eyes. Something so hateful that you cannot wait for the day I am driven out of this estate, isn't it so?"

Jiang Wanying sneered back, "There is no need for such remarks, Elder Sister. After all, we share the responsibility of serving one husband. If Elder Sister had remained principled, this little sister would have naturally adored and respected you. However, Elder Sister insists on using the six years of neglect to embarrass Lord Husband when she ought to be grateful, therefore, this little sister naturally cannot remain still."

With a wave of her hand, Qiu Xia immediately stepped forward to hand something that looked like a rouge box to Jiang Wanying. Jiang Wanying smiled and said, "When this little sister learned of this matter, I had tossed and turned, thinking of ways for dear Elder Sister to prove her innocence. In a happy coincidence, I happened to receive this. Have you heard how hundreds of years ago, women of the past used Gecko Sand to prove their maidenhood?

If dear Elder Sister has no guilty conscience, just take a fingernail's worth and put it on your arm. On an undefiled girl, the colour of this Gecko Sand will remain on the skin. On one who has lost her virginity, the colour will fade away. Well? How about it? It's not like this will hurt Elder Sister's face, surely Elder Sister will not refuse?"

Fu Qiuning [1] immediately said, "A few hundreds year old method? There must be a reason why this method had not been continued. Now you want me to put this dubious thing on my body, insult on my person aside, how should I know whether it works or not? I refuse. Why not just have a doctor put her hands on my body before everyone's eyes?"

Jiang Wanying sneered, "It's just dabbing a little rouge on your arm, how is this insulting your person? If you refuse, it is proof that you are as guilty as a thief. Otherwise, why would you refuse an opportunity to prove your innocence? When the time comes, whatever Mother-in-law wishes to do with you, even I cannot help you."

Fu Qiuning [1c] stared at the box, curiosity nearly overwhelming her as she thought: Woah, so this is the infamous lizard dust thing. No, it's still too unscientific, ah. The dust itself is one thing, but what makes it so red? Cinnabar? But cinnabar tends to stain, how could lizard dust make it fade away per the lack of virginity? These ancient people certainly have skills…

[1d] "Well? Are you going to use it or not?" came Jiang Wanying's impatient question.

Fu Qiuning started. [1c] In truth, she was really curious about trying it, but, who knew whether or not it contained poison?! Therefore, the only answer she could give was, "If you wish me to smear this Gecko Dust on myself, I shall. However, only if Little Sister smears it on yourself first."

Jiang Wanying was taken aback. She pulled a face and said, "Is Elder Sister trying to be amusing? Why would I use this thing on myself? It is not I who had to prove my innocence. Six years ago, I have already proven myself before Mother-in-law and Lord Husband. There is no need for you to bring up this matter to try and escape this test, unless you have a guilty conscience."

[1e] [1f] Fu Qiuning tilted her head, "You say that the dust will fade away on a person who had lost their virginity. How do I know the thing in your hand is true Gecko Sand and not just ordinary rouge that would not disappear on anyone?" she asked reasonably. "Surely you should at least smear some on yourself, and on one of the virgin maids to prove that it works as you say it would?"

[1g] The rest of the ladies were taken aback by this reasonable request. However, since the only non-virgins were the mistresses of the house and none of them wanted to put the Gecko Dust on themselves, the argument continued. Fu Qiuning was really on the verge of rolling her eyes out of her head.

Unbeknown to them, while they were quarrelling over the validity of the Gecko Dust, Ling Long, who was supposed to guard the place, turned a blind eye as random women began to sneak closer for a listen. Ling Long knew that she had been placed on guard to protect the privacy of the ladies' talk. However, she was also equally aware that this was an important opportunity for her mistress to drive Fu Qiuning out of the estate. She thought: Let these women listen and know how my mistress drives out this thorn in the eye. Then, you shall know the might of the Jiang family.

The quarrel went round and round, repeating itself to the point where [2a] Jiang Wanying was getting frustrated. [2a] Finally, she swiped the Gecko Dust with her finger, grabbed hold of Qiu Xia and smeared it on the maid's arm. Then, she smeared the rest on her own arm. Before everyone's eyes, the brilliant, cinnabar red of the Gecko Dust on her arm eventually turned white while the red on Qiu Xia remained. [2b] Even the Old Madam appeared fascinated by the process.

[1c] Fu Qiuning stared at the fading dust, thinking: Woah, ancient people are incredible. Is this some kind of alchemy? Moreover, this method is hundreds of years old?

[2a] "There now!" Jiang Wanying said triumphantly. "It works as it should. You have absolutely no reason not to do it."

[2b] "Indeed," said Fu Qiuning, "However, I do not want to."

[2b] "WHAT?!"

[2b] "I refused to be forced into proving my innocence, or lack thereof. Little Sister has indeed proven that the Gecko Dust works as it should, but there is no reason why I should be forced into putting it on myself."

This, naturally, set off another round of quarrels with the Jiangs pressuring Fu Qiuning to put the dust on herself. By then, everyone was even more sure that Fu Qiuning was guilty. Finally, after having dragged the matter long enough, Fu Qiuning decided to throw herself into her final act. This shall be the climax of her performance.

"Very well, since Mother-in-law and Sister-in-law insist, there is nothing I could do but comply. However…" with a sudden sob, Fu Qiuning wailed dramatically, "However, this is too intolerable! Why should I, [3] the granddaughter of a feudal king be treated like this? I, who had been abandoned for six years, having almost died in this hidden place, am supposed to be grateful? Indeed, I am grateful, grateful for everyone's attention today. All who had come to witness my innocence, my shame, how am I to show myself before others from now on?"

Fu Qiuning was wailing and crying so tragically that even Xu'shi and Huo'shi, who were listening from outside were stunned. They could not help but felt a little sad for her. As sad as a fox when it heard that the rabbit has died. As for Old Madam Jin, she was smirking inwardly to herself, thinking: Goodness me, this Fu'shi is very good at acting. Not at all inferior to me.

[3] Suddenly, Fu Qiuning paused. She turned wild eyes at Madam Jiang, "Mother-in-law, you wish me to smear this Gecko Sand on myself? Yes, very well, this humble woman shall do it. However, this humble woman has one wish… only one…"

A bad premonition crept up Old Madam's spine, but before she could say anything, Fu Qiuning rushed forward with her dramatic lines.

[3] "Indeed, seeing how all the mistresses of the house are here to witness this humble woman's shame, there is no way for this humble woman to hold up her head in this estate anymore. Therefore, should this Gecko Sand proves this humble woman's innocence, allow this humble woman to stay hidden within Night Breeze Pavilion. This humble woman shall never leave this place and be an eyesore to anyone within the estate anymore!"

[3a] Noo! Old Madam Jin cried out in her heart.

However, it was too late. Fu Qiuning flashed a glance at the old vixen of the Jin Marquisate, no, the Jing Dukedom, and declared, "As Old Madam is my witness, this humble woman shall proceed!" Then, she decisively grabbed Jiang Wanying's finger, still stained with the Gecko Sand (why did this bit of sand not turn white?) and smeared a long line on her arm, nearly scratching herself with Jiang Wanying's nails.

[3a] As they all stared, Old Madam privately howled: Oh no, not only did I not able to assist my good grandson, but I had allowed Qiuning to turn the tables on us. With this move, the day she would enter the inner court grows ever more distant. What terrible luck, it was just too bad. If I had known that these two had already consummated their relationship, I would not have dragged my old bones over to muddy the water.

While Old Madam Jin was crying out 'bad luck' in her heart, Fu Qiuning stared at the red smear on her arm. It had already begun to fade, eventually turning snow white.

"No, this… this is impossible… how can this be possible?" Jiang Wanying covered her mouth, her heart in her throat. She looked at the white smear on Fu Qiuning's arm then bared her teeth at Fu Qiuning, "This- you did this on purpose!"

Fu Qiuning dabbed her eyes. [3b] "On purpose? Didn't Little Sister come to prove my innocence? This elder sister is sorry that this is not the innocence you were looking for."

[3b] "You tricked me!"

"Just how did I trick you? Did this humble woman ask for you to come to my Night Breeze Pavilion? Did this humble woman provide the Gecko Sand? Tell me, Second Madam Wan, how did I trick you?"

Pill Bug: YEEEEESSSS! Take that, you old vixen!

Gumihou: Indeed, that bit was very gratifying.

Pill Bug: Also, that plot hole smear on the fingers.

Gumihou: We double-checked, it was really on her fingers.

Pill Bug: Maybe she has a lot of oil or cream on her hands

Gumihou: Eww…

Gumihou: Also, there were a lot more words from FQN in the final bits, which were mostly there for face-slapping purposes. It was quite draggy, so, cut it down. The initial build-up for the deleted wailing was lacking, only interesting if you skim it.

The Old Madam, as expected, is filled with self-righteous indignation on Fu Qiuning's behalf, kind of like a rich madam giving her pet cat a funeral procession on a street where poor children lay dying on the pavement. She called JWY a 'vicious and jealous' woman, at the same time trying to push Fu Qiuning into JFJ's bed.

Old Madam Jin had put herself so far above the pedestal that she judges JWY's actions pitying condescension without giving thought to how she had brought more harm to Fu Qiuning. In Gumi's professional opinion, this Old Madam is just a privileged old bag who plays favourites and was mostly in it for some cheap entertainment.

Gumi is more disgusted by the Old Madam than by Jiang Wanying.

[1] Pull back from overly dramatic to dramatic. Also, use 'dubious method' as the reason for refusal rather than plain 'outrage'.

[1a] Replace 'wait until Young Marquis is here, humph, humph' with 'why don't you just ask a doctor to stick her hand into my v?'

Because this is just baiting JWY to dramatically reiterate how much JFJ favours FQN.

[1b] Delete Jiang Wanying's reply per [1a]. No more 'humph, humph, you just want hubby here to show his luurrrvee!'

[1c] Replace 'death glare' with 'curious stare'. Add 'woah, so that's the infamous lizard dust, to think I'd have an opportunity to experience it…'

[1d] Jiang Wanying's reaction to FQN's suspiciously long stare.

[1e] Deleted 'Fu Qiuning's body trembled violently, as if extremely angry but helpless. Mrs. Jiang and Jiang Wanying only thought that she was guilty and afraid. The Old Matriarch shook her head and smiled inwardly, secretly thinking that Qiu Ning is also good at acting, she is not inferior to me, the granddaughter-in-law.'

It's just overly dramatic action, coupled with reader spoon-feeding and Ass Polishing for the Old Madam.

Nope.

[1f] Replaced [1e] with reasonable reasons on why not to try their lizard dust.

[1g] Reaction to reasonable [1f] which was more 'huff huff huff' as per canon

[2] Add detail:

[2a] Have Jiang Wanying try on the dust

[2b] Create a scenario as per [2a]

[3] Okay, let's go completely overboard since this is a special limited edition performance.

[3a] Delete: Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying merely said she was just looking for a way out for herself and trying to stay within the estate.

The narration contributes nothing and merely slows down the drama.

[3b] Instead of sneering at JWY, which is such bad taste, really. Just calmly ask what she meant.

"You… you…" Jiang Wanying pointed at Fu Qiuning with a trembling hand.

However, before she could say anything to implicate herself further, Madam Jiang barked, "That's enough." Then, she swiftly turned to Jiang Wanying and slapped her across the face. She snapped, "As the mistress of the house, to think that you would cause such a fuss over a few rumours made by servants with nothing better to do but carelessly chew on their tongues. Go back to your courtyard and stay there, you have a month to properly reflect on your frivolous actions."

Jiang Wanying was so angry she nearly spat up blood. However, she also understood that this slap from Madam Jiang could not be avoided. It was the only way to transfer the responsibilities of her actions onto some random servant's head. It was also the only way she could avoid drawing more of Jin Fengju's ire and blame and evade a more severe punishment.

"Yes, this daughter-in-law knows her guilt," Jiang Wanying stroked her slapped cheek. She gritted her teeth so hard that she nearly ground her molars to powder. Tears rolled down her cheeks as her body shook like a leaf in the wind. However, no matter how much she did not want to, she had to turn, faced Fu Qiuning, saluted deeply and said through gritted teeth, "Today, this younger sister was too rude and impetuous. On a mere few words of a servant, this younger sister had formed unfound suspicion against Elder Sister. This younger sister deeply apologizes to Elder Sister, and hopes for Elder Sister's benevolence in forgiving this younger sister for being young and ignorant."

Fu Qiuning could not help but admire both Jiang ladies, privately thinking: women who grew up in this kind of perverted household are really not ordinary. Just look at this person's incredible skill. If it were me, even if you beat me to death, I probably can't change my face so quickly.

On the surface, her lips curled into a sneer as she said softly, "Young and ignorant? I fear that this is not the case. Although my dear Younger Sister is three months younger than I am, your abilities vastly outstrip mine. Now that you have all achieved your purpose in this place, from now onwards, Night Breeze Pavilion is where I shall spend my last years. Now that I have this mark on my arm, I no longer have the face to see anyone outside."

"How could matters be so grave? It's just my daughter-in-law and Wanying being recklessly led by a servant with a loose mouth. Even so, the fault is on their side, there is no need for you to feel wronged. On the contrary, you have been punished for something that is not your fault," the Old Madam finally opened her mouth. She leisurely set down her cup to say, "Today's matter is not known by many. Should it be known outside, they could only commend you for your generosity and kindness. Qiuning, ah, there's no need to brood over this. Otherwise, if you continue to blame your mother-in-law, it is also the same as blaming this old woman."

Fu Qiuning turned a resentful glance at Old Madam Jin, thinking: Old Ancestor, ah. It's rare for me to receive such a great advantage, can you please not ruin this good thing for me? For the sake of this scene, [1a] I even sacrificed my v to your precious grandson. Do you think I'd let you take my opportunity away so easily?

With this thought in mind, she lowered her head and wailed tragically, "Although Old Ancestor said so, this granddaughter-in-law still felt she had lost all face. This granddaughter-in-law begs Old Ancestor to please show understanding for this granddaughter-in-law's feelings and allow at least a few days to calm this granddaughter-in-law's unease. So long as this granddaughter-in-law can feel her life is safe in this estate, this granddaughter-in-law shall have no other wishes."

On Madam Jiang's side, in addition to the anger nesting snugly in her belly, she could not forget the love and favour that Jin Fengju has for this Fu Qiuning. Because of this, guilt and fear treaded through her anger and resentment. She thought: If this matter reaches the Old Master's ears, even I would also be implicated and scolded, ah. Aih, if I had known, I would not have trusted this gullible Wanying girl. Didn't she also pat her chest and promised me a foolproof scheme before this? What was the result? I was reprimanded by my son and nearly dragged him into something worse instead. Instead of learning from the folly of my actions, I went along with a second foolhardy scheme and ended up with a face stained with soot. Isn't this the very definition of courting disaster?

I fear, from now on, Wanying's future would be even more miserable. It's not worth it. It's just not worth it. Just… how did matters come to this? Was it that Wanying's eyes had always been this poisonous, or, could it be that Fu'shi had seen through us from the beginning and baited us into this trap? If that is the case, surely this woman's ability to scheme is just too terrifying?

Madam Jiang had really wronged Fu Qiuning with this assumption. Her mind had been so perverted by the noble family schemes that caused her to imagine tricks at every corner when in fact, Fu Qiuning's principle was simply: Refrain against harming others, yet guard against those trying to hurt you. [2] As Fu Qiuning had also taught the twins, it was fine to endure for the sake of peace, but if the wind and sea continued to storm against her, there was no need to tolerate it any longer.

This was why she had retaliated so fiercely this time. [2] It was already a second attempt at her life since being kicked out of the estate would almost mean death, this was also why she refused to take it anymore. Madam Jiang, [2a] being unable to understand Fu Qiuning's 'survival mode' way of thinking, underestimated her too much. By thinking that Fu Qiuning was merely another woman out to rise in the ranks for favour and status, [2a] she could not have imagined the despair and desperation behind Fu Qiuning's decisions.

No matter what, there was no getting around that Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying had suffered a great loss over that scheme. They stormed in arrogantly, believing that they would be able to sweep Fu Qiuning out with one swift kick at their leisure, never thinking that they would come out as losers in this plan, losing credit with the Old Madam as well as their faces. When they stiffly stepped out of Fu Qiuning's house, they found Xu'shi and Huo'shi huddled far away from the building. However, from the smirks on their faces, both knew that these people had somehow found out about everything that went on inside the room.

Ling Long trailed behind Madam Jiang, not daring to even say a word, knowing that she was the one who had turned a blind eye when the other women attempted to eavesdrop. She had meant to show those people how powerful her mistress was, yet unexpectedly, Fu Qiuning had turned matters around so thoroughly that she had inadvertently allowed others to witness the Jiang women's blunders instead. Fortunately for her, Madam Jiang was too busy wracking her brains for ways to appease her son and control the rumours in the estate to pay too much attention to Ling Long's slip-up.

Jin Fengju escorted the Empress Dowager back from the Buddhist Temple safely to the palace. He had to listen to the old lady prattle on and on for half a day. After finally making Jin Fengju promise to bring Old Madam Jin and his mother etc to the palace for a visit, she was finally willing to let him leave. He was about to escape the palace when someone informed him that the emperor was waiting for him in the study, therefore, he hurried over there instead.

Within the emperor's study were several feudal princes and a few senior courtiers close to the emperor. It turned out that, due to the increasingly scarce land at the Central Plains, plans were being made to explore and open up the thousands of miles of fertile land beyond the borderlines. Unfortunately, not many people dared to venture beyond the frontier, not because they feared the work that goes into opening up new lands, but because they were afraid of invasions from the Northerners and people from other countries. Therefore, the emperor had called them all there to discuss the logistics of moving people beyond the borderlines and sending military aid to assist in guarding the new settlers.

This was indeed a very important matter. Everyone began to offer ideas and suggestions. After a long discussion, a tentative strategy began to take shape. However, more discussion would be needed before any firm plans could be established. Seeing that it was already noon, the emperor ordered everyone to stay for a banquet to ease their tiredness and reward them for their contributions. This was indeed a great honour and all of the courtiers readily agreed. Jin Fengju alone was thinking of Fu Qiuning at home and really wanted to see her, however, he dared not refuse the emperor's banquet.

Even so, the emperor's eyes were still sharp enough to notice his restlessness. With a smile, he said, "Is there some pressing matter awaiting Fengju? If there is, you may go back. Things that should be discussed have already been discussed for now. This is not something that can be decided in one meeting. We shall discuss it further at morning court tomorrow."

As though he had received a royal pardon, Jin Fengju hastily knelt and gave thanks. After bidding farewell to the other courtiers, he rushed home, leaving Prince Rong to stretch out his neck curiously, wondering: Just what is my brother-in-law rushing around for? I had not heard of any major events happening at my father-in-law's place. Why is this fellow in such a rush? Tch, you still owe me a drink.

When he finally reached the gates of the Duke's mansion, he overheard some clanging sound from the former Xiangyang estate next door. Jin Ming smiled and said, "The renovations for the estate have started under Master Feng's supervision. It is estimated that it would be completed in two to three months' time. Once completed, the Second Master's family would move in. Does Master wish to pay a visit?"

"En, some other day, ba. Where would I find the inclination to go and supervise such things?" Jin Fengju said with a smile as he hurriedly entered the gate.

Beside him, Jin Ming laughed and said, "I must say, Master's footsteps were so light it was as though you were floating. It is clear that Master has his heart set on speeding home. Should we first go pay respects at Old Madam at Health & Longevity Court or go straight to Night Breeze Pavilion?"

"From the way you speak, if I do not visit Health & Longevity Court, would I be an unfilial child?" Jin Fengju grinned as he attempted to kick Jin Ming. Suddenly, he frowned, "What's this? You look at the servants, why are they all looking at us with such eyes? Did something happen at the estate?"

"Indeed, it is very odd," Jin Ming also scratched his head. He pointed at one of the low-level servants and shouted, "Young San'er, stand there. You little brat, stand still for me, if you dare move another step, I shall break both your legs."

At his shout, Young San'er who was on the verge of running away, had no choice but to stand still. With the master standing next to him, if he said that he did not hear the order, he must be deaf. Since he could not run away, he could only stand in place obediently.

"You sure are a daring little bastard. With the master here, you still dare treat my words like the wind?" Jin Ming was so angry that he kicked Young San'er before saying sharply, "Speak, why did you run away? What happened in the estate? If you dare speak even half a word of lies, I shall have your skin peeled off before breaking your hands and feet and throwing you out."

Naturally, these were idle threats, but Young San'er also knew that even if he did not lose his skin, he could still be driven out of the estate. But, how could he dare to reveal Madam Jiang's 'good deed's with his own mouth? Therefore, he could only throw himself to the ground and cried until tears and snot mingled and wailed, "Master, please spare this lowly one, ba. This lowly one dare not say, dare not say. Master would know if Master visits Night Breeze Pavilion."

This single line immediately caused Jin Fengju's expression to darken. In a solemn voice, he said, "Very well, I shall not ask you about this anymore. However, answer me this, how is Second Madam now? Speak."

"Second Madam Ning is very good. This lowly one dare not lie. She is indeed very good," Young San'er then began to kowtow again and again. Jin Fengju saw that it did not look like he was lying and nodded. In a low voice, he said to Jin Ming, "Let him leave. He really dared not speak of the matter. Let us go to Health & Longevity Court."

"Master is not going to Night Breeze Pavilion first?" Jin Ming inquired.

Jin Fengju shook his head, "No, let's visit Health & Longevity Court first. We must understand the ins and outs of the matter before we could do anything about it."

Thus, in the end, they made their way towards Health & Longevity Court.

Let us speak of Fu Qiuning's side.

After sending off Madam Jiang and the others, she stood at the entrance of the house for a long time before finally letting out a long sigh of relief. A small smile crossed her face as she returned to the room. Within the house, there were only her, Aunt Yu and Yu Jie.

[3] She sat in place for a long time until Yu Jie said in an overly loud voice, "W-wasn't that exciting? I swear, I have never seen such performances!"

[3] Fu Qiuning looked at her, "Indeed, it was a great performance. Elder Madam and Second Madam Wan spared no effort. One has to wonder, how long they have been practising to become so adept at changing their faces so completely."

[3] "Indeed, Second Madam Wan's skills are too great," said Aunt Yu. "But Madams' skills are greater. Elder Madam's slap just now was so loud, that it still rings in my ear."

[Gumihou: The ending was all the ladies gleefully mocking Jiang Wanying. I mean, it's fine if the maid does it, but FQN? Also, are we supposed to feel amused by JFJ being stopped by all these random events from seeing his 'beloved Qiuning'?]

[1] Add grief

[1a] Make Old Madam's awfulness more apparent.

[2] Reasonable reasons, instead of making Fu Qiuning into something like an enlightened and brilliant person with great principles, give her more human-like qualities

[2a] Switch 'Madam Jiang unable to understand her personality' to 'Madam Jiang unable to understand her reasons'

Deleted 'a lowly person could not understand a lofty person's heart', because FQN is far from lofty. Her reasons were baser than that.

[3] Add awkwardness. Instead of 'ahahah we won~ I'm so clever~~ tee hee~~' give a more solemn reaction.

"She is retreating in order to advance," said Fu Qiuning [1a] solemnly. "That slap is meant to save their lives and reputation. Madam Jiang made the best decision possible at that moment and did not hesitate to carry out a difficult move." Then, she shook her head and sighed, "Pity the parents of this world. Although she is an aunt, her heart is no different from that of a parent. If Second Madam Wan could absorb this lesson properly, I would be most grateful. I really do not want to have to entangle with them anymore. Fortunately, we managed to salvage something from this incident."

[2a] Aunt Yu and Yu Jie hesitated, "Madam means…"

"Thanks to them, and [1b] the Old Madam, I may have bought a few precious years in this place," said Fu Qiuning with a grim smile.

[2a] Aunt Yu smiled, "Ah, Madam sure knows how to snatch opportunities from the jaws of defeat." [2b] Then, in a flash of brilliance, she added flatteringly, "Then, this means no matter how the Young Marquis tries to force Madam, Madam need not have to move."

Fu Qiuning eyed [1c] Aunt Yu suspiciously for a moment. What's with this supportive attitude? However, instead of calling her out on it, she said simply, "Indeed, he had been pushing very hard. I have to thank Mother-in-law, Second Madam Wan and [1b] our dear Old Madam for their assistance. They have indeed given their all." [1d]

"Given their all? What all?" the maids tilted their heads curiously, unsure of what Fu Qiuning was talking about.

"The Madams have given a lot of thought and effort into their schemes, all of them," said Fu Qiuning with a dark chuckle. [1d]

After lunch, Fu Qiuning felt a little sleepy. Unable to resist the call of the bed, she stretched luxuriously once and laid down, "Looks like the saying that one gets sleepy in spring and tired in autumn is true."

The window was opened, and the sun was shining warmly on the bed, making everything feel warm and comfortable. She casually grabbed a blanket and plumped her pillow once before settling down to nap.

Just outside the window was an almond tree now covered in blossoms. At each gust of wind, petals floated down. Fu Qiuning sighed, knowing that the season of falling petals was coming again.

The servants knew that their mistress was taking a nap, therefore, no one came to disturb her. Eventually, Fu Qiuning fell into a deep sleep. It was unclear how long she slept, but she was eventually woken by some slight sound. She opened her eyes to see Jin Fengju closing the window. She blinked her eyes and said lazily, "What time is it? Why is the Young Marquis here?"

"It is close to mid-afternoon," after closing the window, Jin Fengju came over to sit down. He touched Fu Qiuning's forehead and said, "Although the weather is warm, it is still spring. Sleeping with the window open like this, are you not afraid of the wind going into your head? You could get a headache from it."

Fu Qiuning fully sat up.

Jin Fengju smiled and continued, "What is it? Are you planning to get up? Why not sleep a little longer?"

She shook her head, "No, if I nap any longer, I would not be able to sleep tonight."

Jin Fengju's low chuckle filled the room, "Isn't that good? I also do not sleep easily at night."

Having just woken up, it took Fu Qiuning a moment to realise Jin Fengju's double entendre. She kicked him and snapped, "Aren't you a master? Not afraid of letting others hear you speak like this?"

Jin Fengju allowed the light kick. Then, he leaned back against the daybed and said slowly, "You are angry at this? Surely you are not thinking of tearing down the bridge now that you have crossed the river?" Seeing Fu Qiuning's doubtful eyes, he laughed and fixed his eyes on her, "Isn't it so? Now that the Gecko Sand business is over, there is no longer any need to coax me?"

"You believe that I gave myself over to you after realising Mother-in-law and Second Madam Wan's plan to escape some sort of catastrophe?" [3a] even an idiot would come to this conclusion, the only question was whether this fellow was one such idiot.

"Isn't it so?" Jin Fengju raised his eyebrows. He did not look angry, only, there appear to be a trace of sadness in his eyes.

[1e] Fu Qiuning nearly rolled her eyes at JFJ's dramatics. "As I recall it, it was around this time that you suddenly appear at Night Breeze Pavilion. From then on, you inserted yourself into the children's lives and mine as well. A year has passed since, surely as the talented and intelligent Young Marquis, should have some understanding of my temperament, and know enough the answer to that question."

There, let's kick the ball back to him.

Jin Fengju nodded, "That's right, I know in my heart that you are not the type of person who would willingly give up their body to me just to escape a catastrophe. Only, I fear I may have been self-indulgent again. No matter how I look at it, Qiuning has always been cool with me. If you were to say that you have suddenly fallen passionately in love with me, I really dare not believe it."

"Pei!" Fu Qiuning reflexively spat. [1f] Seeing his shocked eyes, she decided to follow through with her act and recited,

"

A thousand wishes on a pillow,

Want rest? When the green hills rot.

A hammer floats on the water,

Let us await for the Yellow River to dry,

The sun appears at dawn,

The Big Dipper dips south.

Want rest, yet rest wanting,

Watch as the sun rises at midnight.

"

Jin Fengju only had to ponder for a moment before smiling, "As expected of a talented woman. Even your way of swearing is very interesting. It has some similarities with Shang Xie [4]."

Fu Qiuning snorted, "Since time immemorial, women have always been infatuated by these pledges of love that fell from the mouths of men by the thousands. Only fools would give weight to these meaningless words."

"Since Qiuning is not one to believe such vows, and I happen to not like making such pledges either…"

[1g] Fu Qiuning had no idea how she managed to not roll her eyes out of her head at this clearly rubbish statement.

"…as for how much my heart loves you… I understand that actions are worth more than words to you, but it's fine. We still have the rest of our lives for me to slowly prove my feelings to you." As a smart man, Jin Fengju immediately understood where Fu Qiuning was going with her comment. Privately, he thought: My wife is such a remarkable woman, with such extraordinary insights. It is truly worthwhile for me to cherish her.

"I dare not expect the promise of a lifetime," Fu Qiuning lowered her eyes. "I only hope that when you are tired of me and no longer consider my actions cute, you will recall the days you consider us friends and afford some measure of regard for a former confidante and not treat the children differently should our relationship eventually sour. I entreat Lord Husband's mercy and beg that you will allow me a quiet corner to die in peace. Please understand that I make these entreaties in earnest."

Jin Fengju stared at her for a long moment before gently taking her hand, in an earnest voice, he said, "Though I wish to refute this, I have no idea how or where to start. There are more fickle men in the world than sincere ones, I cannot blame you for thinking of me as one of them.

Qiuning, you are a very unique woman. To be so vigilant against me, it must be because you fear a future heartbreak. As the saying goes, when love is the densest, that's when it suddenly changes. I understand this.

However, have you ever thought just how much I was hurt by your words just now? It is as though you scored my heart with a knife. You may be at ease, so long as you continue to have feelings for me, I, Fengju, will not let you down in this lifetime."

[3b] Fu Qiuning stared back at Jin Fengju's starry eyes. She thought: Looks like this man really believes in his own words. There's no point trying to reason with someone who had deluded themselves to this point. Instead, she decided to change the subject.

"You were just at Health & Longevity Court?" When Jin Fengju nodded, she smiled and said, "I had expected this. Why else would you bring this matter up? In truth, neither Mother-in-law nor Second Madam Wan was able to gain anything from my side. I have not been driven away and Second Madam Wan is grounded for a month. That is enough, you may pretend not to know anything."

Jin Fengju smiled and said, "Not going to press your advantage and pursue victory? Here, I thought you would fling yourself into my bosom and bitterly entreat me to punish them on your behalf, to the point that neither will dare to bully you ever again."

Fu Qiuning suddenly burst out [2c] laughing, she could not help herself. Finally, she snorted and said, "Throw myself into your bosom? Entreat you to punish your own blood mother and your childhood friend? Am I insane? You are the last person I would ever entreat."

"Qiuning, you really… I swear, you surprise me at every turn," Jin Fengju suddenly surged forward, clasped her to his bosom and [1i] dramatically declared, "Do not worry, no matter what I shall teach them a lesson. It is too contemptible for them to deliberately pay a scheme like this."

Fu Qiuning sighed again, [1g] look at this guy trying to toss his own family members under the bus just to score points with the current floozy, that she was the current floozy did not make things better. This was almost embarrassing. Therefore, she kept her voice even as she said, "It's fine. I was thrown in here especially to humiliate your family. Therefore, it is natural for Mother-in-law to dislike me. Setting Mother-in-law aside, it was my own blood father who pushed me into this pit of fire. So what if we are relatives? It's fine to stop the matter here, there is no need for you to severely punish anyone."

Fu Qiuning was not saying any of this thing out of the goodness of her heart, she was not the Holy Mother after all. However, she understood that if Jin Fengju were to ride out dramatically and [1h] punish his own mother and childhood-friend-wife, the one who would suffer would be herself. Both mom and wife would throw off all pretences and come at her with guns and swords flashing the moment Jin Fengju turn his back to her. So, no, please, please don't do anything excessive on my behalf, please.

On the other hand, Fu Qiuning's [1i] seeming 'generosity' made Jin Fengju feel even more guilty. He secretly thought: I need to make up to her for the mistakes that Mother and Cousin did. I must not let Qiuning down in the future.

After a moment of silence, Fu Qiuning said, "Has Old Madam spoken to you? I will not be moving into the Elegant Mansion. From now on, I shall remain within Night Breeze Pavilion. As Lord Husband has seen, even while I'm still here, Second Madam Wan still could not tolerate my existence. Were I to move to the inner court, even if I did nothing, my presence would still become a thorn in her side. It is better for us to remain apart to keep the peace. This way, Lord Husband would also encounter less trouble."

Jin Fengju gave a bitter smile, "You are the one who is clearly reluctant to move from here, and yet… it's fine, since you did not want to, I shall not force you." Although he said this, plans were already forming in his heart. [1j] No matter what, I shall make you move into the inner court.

Fu Qiuning did not think much of the matter. [1k] There was no doubt that this scum man would be looking for ways to force her out. She was not stupid enough to believe that she had won anything but a little more time to herself. Still, the thought was enough to bring a smile to her face as she thought of the coming month of peace.

[1j] To Jin Fengju, the smile on her face was so beautiful that he became dumbfounded. He had no idea whether to laugh or cry to see the woman he loved being so happy to not move into his inner court. He thought: Qiuning, ah, do not be so happy with yourself. I have promised I will not force you out of Night Breeze Pavilion. I shall wait for you to personally cry and beg me to bring you out of here.

That night, Jin Fengju stayed at Night Breeze Pavilion. The deeply in-loved Jin Fengju, having crossed one boundary, but denied another, tossed her about at night making clouds and rain until the early mornings before he was willing to cease.

The next day, a deeply satisfied Jin Fengju set out to the court in a cheerful mood.

Gumihou: I am disgusted.

There are more fickle men in the world than sincere ones, I cannot blame you for thinking me one of them.

Gumihou: … I cannot tell you just how disgusted I am to have to translate the above sentence.

Fu Qiuning: You used the word 'disgusted' twice.

Gumihou: I have no other words

Fu Qiuning: … I am disgusted with my 'alternate self'

[1] Add solemness

[1a] Replaced 'with a smile' with 'solemnly'. Give more solemn detail aside from 'haihh, this Wanying is so annoying, hopefully, she learns her lesson nyaa~~'

[1b] Let's not forget about the Old Madam's role in this

[1c] Reaction as per [2b], cancel the smile and humour from the OOC maid. Also, delete 'kyaa~ he pushed so hard I nearly couldn't resist, uwuwu~~"

[1d] Deleted:

'Tee hee~ stick out tongue, ufufu, I kid~~'

Because it's meant to distract from all sorts of bad juju, like Old Madam's involvement

and 'uwaaaa~~ I'm from the modern world after all, ufufu~'

Because clearly, the author shoved this in after she suddenly remembered FQN was supposed to be Fang Chuyu of Modern China. Deleted 150 words of it.

[1e] Added a 'like srly?' reaction to JFJ's sad drama

[1f] This… long vow came out of nowhere, gave it some context, gloomy ones, of course.

[1g] Add FQN near roll eye at JFJ's dramatic announcement

[1h] Reword the same things in a way that makes JFJ sound more stupid and FQN more self-preserving than 'kyaa~ kyaa~'

[1i] Adjusted so that JFJ's private vow is more ridiculous than heartfelt

[1j] The 'JFJ still have other plans' is made out to be light-hearted here, but in reality, this kind of act is disturbing. Add details to reveal the creepiness of his thoughts.

[1k] Add detail to FQN's thoughts, replace 'lalala~~ I wo~~oon~~~ tee hee' with 'sure, I believe you' scepticism.

[2] Maids' reactions. Let's Keep It Real.

[2a] Instead of Yu Niang directly understanding, add a question.

[2b] Add 'a flash of brilliance' because all this while, the maids have been all 'Yay, Team JFJ~' but suddenly, it's 'wow, you don't have to listen to him now,' as though she had not been going uwu over JFJ's every decision and being frustrated by her mistress' obstinance

[3] Delete obvious ass polishing:

[3a] Deleted: Obviously with his level of intelligence… blah blah, he so smart, wow, etc etc

[3b] Deleted: Fu Qiuning's heart moved, and the two of them looked at each other calmly, neither of them willing to avoid it. This is not a fight, but self-confidence, the self-confidence that one's love for the other party must be loyal and unswerving.

What is this nonsense?

Especially in view of the following sentence.

[3c] Delete 'puchi' of laughter, because that just smacks of 'tee hee'

Also deleted bits of 'awww, I'd never, hee hee'.

[3d] Deleted 'said mildly', replace with 'dramatically', because it's JFJ's Solo Drama time.

[4] Shang Xie – By Heaven
