THE ROYALS
SEASON 5
EPISODE 6: This Life is Just a game
Helena sat down with her tea. Mark had insisted that they kept the alcohol away for the first night. He wanted to spend the night with 'the real her'. He promised that they would bring the alcohol out tomorrow night, but she was in desperate need for a drink.
"I have a confession" he said as he sat down beside her. Helena turned to him, curious. She was sure that there would have been some unspoken reason for his impromptu holiday, but she had not expected him to tell her.
"Oh really?" she asked
"I may have had a bit of an agenda with my invitation" he added. Helena remained silent, raising only an eyebrow in encouragement for him to continue.
"I would like you to move back into the palace. With me" he explained. She opened her mouth to reply but was cut off quickly as Mark continued. "I mean, you've been staying there so much anyway, it would hardly be much of an imposition" he explained
"It is a lovely thought, although, Eleanor and Jasper need me now" she explained
"They have just got engaged. I am sure that if anything, they need to be alone" he explained. Helena thought about it for a few moments before nodding. She knew that her cards had already been dealt. She was a pawn in whatever game Robert was planning.
"That sounds wonderful" she conceded
The room was buzzing with people, drinks were flowing. Len and Jasper were at the front of the room when Liam jumped up onto the stage, calling the attention of the room. The music and chatter died within a few moments.
"Good evening, everyone" he began. "I'm going to keep this short, but sweet. I've spent my life having speeches written for me, but when Jasper asked me to be his best man, I knew this speech had to come from me. From in here" Liam said, tapping a fist against his heart.
"I have to admit. I was completely indifferent to Jasper when he first appeared. He was just another of Lens bodyguards. Another toy for her entertainment. Perhaps, it was because we believed that we had just lost our dear older brother, or there was some underlying, deeper connection between them, but he stuck around. He broke her one month barrier. And I honestly, could not have been happier" Liam began. Len took a few sips of her drink, knowing the real reason why Len was hanging around, she knew Liam did too, and hoped that he would not bring it up.
"So of course, it was only natural that when a routine switch came, I took Jasper as my own security detail, and I would be lying if I said I did not see the charm. Though, I confess, I did not jump into bed with him. Not from a lack of trying" Liam joked, causing a round of laugher from the room.
"Life has a twisted way of working, and in another routine move, Jasper was taken from me, and placed as Robert's security. I suppose he was just so good at his job, he kept climbing the ranks, but he never took his eyes off Len. Never. We went to festivals, and all he could look at was her. We went to the bar, and all he would talk about was her"
"Now please don't get me wrong. Jasper's attention was on her, non-stop. But she was no better. She went to extreme lengths, making him jealous. Her way of showing how much he was on her mind too." Liam continued
"And I know, some people had their doubts. But anyone who had doubts remaining, surely had those displaced when Jasper found out who killed our dear father. And again, when he took a bullet for our brother. Jasper has not only become a part of our family, he is family. And there is no one I would rather have as a bodyguard. There is no one I would rather have as a friend. No one I would rather have as a brother-in-law … and no one better for my sister" Liam finished, looking heart felled at Len and Jasper, who were both beaming at him. Liam picked up his glass
"To Len and Jasper" he called. Everyone followed, it was noticed that Robert raised his glass, but did not join in the chant, and he did not drink.
It was also noticed, as Len and Jasper had predicted, that Willow had not been invited to the party. And no excuses had been made for her. Leaving the press, namely Harper, free reign of speculation.
"What can I do?" Gemma asked, sat at the table. Len and Jasper sat opposite her. The giels each had a glass of wine, Jasper had a beer.
"I need to clarify, that I do not want you to do anything you are not comfortable with" Len clarified
"I won't" Gemma assured them
"Ok then. We've been thinking a bit about how this would work, but it really depends on if Willow comes or now. None the less, we need to play to Robert's weaknesses" Jasper began
"Which are?" Gemma asked inquisitively
"When Robert had his 'auditions' for his wife, he marked them in three categories. Protocol, conversation, and managing the Paparazzi. Now we all know that you know, respect and appreciate Royal protocol, which Willow is already objecting to. We know you can maintain conversation, the types which would impress high society, whilst also entertaining everyone regardless of interest in more elite conversations. And we know that you can handle the paparazzi. Robert, however, does not" Len explained
"Would you like me to dress smart, seductive but wholly appropriate, hold myself with grace and dignity whilst not undermining the Monarch, provide, in his earshot, conversations with a variety of people, and when I get the chance to speak to him, offer some hints of seduction which could tempt him, and then handle the paparazzi without crumbling or without incriminating Robert?" Gemma asked simply. Len and Jasper exchanged a look
"I mean. Yes, pretty much" she replied
"Easy" Gemma replied
"Seriously?" Jasper asked, "You're ok with this?" he conformed
"Of course. It's for a good cause, and worst case I get to screw a King" Gemma explained
"You're awesome" Len complimented before Jasper could interrupt again. He must have taken the hint, as he changed the subject back to the plan.
"We need you to arrive as Liam's date, then, because Robert has this obsession of taking whatever Liam has, he should come to you" Jasper explained
"What do you mean?" Gemma asked
"Well. Willow was Liams friend, and pretty much girlfriend before Robert decided she would be top of his 'to marry' list. And Kathryn, I'm sure you remember her -" Len started
"Vaguely" Gemma replied
"She was dating Liam whilst Robert was 'dead' and as soon as he came back, he found out about the two of them, and got back with her, only to discard her for Willow" Len finished
"He's such a knob" Gemma rolled her eyes
"You're telling us" Len laughed
"That's why I'm willing to do this. Someone needs to bring him back down. I am happy to be that person" she explained.
"Should we invite Sebastian?" Len asked. They all thought for a moment before Jasper shook his head
"Not yet" he replied
"Just because you don't like him" Len rolled her eyes
"Not that" Jasper confirmed. "My dad and The Grand Duchess are going to be invited, their presence will be noted. Aside from the Police chief, we don't really have anyone who won't be obviously involved. I say we keep Sebastian in the shadows until we need him" Jasper explained
"I know your point Sweetie" Gemma said to Len, "But he does have a point" she added. Outnumbered, and seeing the sense in Jasper's argument, Len conceded, agreeing with both Jasper and Gemma.
Harper Day walked around the engagement party. She had caught all of Liam's speech and had got quite a few supportive interviews of the support following. Many comments about how Liam was the one to make such a lovely speech, not Robert.
She had got enough news articles and was now taking some pictures to finish the article before she put her phone away and enjoyed the rest of the evening. Every good journalist knew that after speeches there was no point being there for research. Everyone would be far too drunk for flattering pictures of coherent interviews. She could then get a drink or two of her own and enjoy herself.
She could not resist, however, when Robert walked past her.
"Your majesty!" she called. He did not turn around. "Your majesty!" she called louder. This time, he turned his head. "Do you have any comment about the happy couple?" she asked. Making sure to have her camera and mic on.
She got no reply. Just a shake of the head and an eyeroll from Robert, walking away. She turned, shutting off her camera and mic, pleased that he had given into her bait. To see Jasper looking confused.
"What was that about?" he asked, curiously
"We had a disagreement" Harper replied with a wink, before walking off.
Jasper nodded to Len. A subtle hint which told her that Robert was already irate. Perhaps it was Liams speech, or Harper's journalism, but Robert was already ticked off. Len slipped out of the room, and pulled out her phone. The one which was not connected to the tracker or any bugs Robert may have placed on them. Though, she was still aware that the room she was in might be bugged. She called Gemma,
"Is it time?" Gemma asked as she answered the pone
"Hey! Has your plane landed yet?"
"Are we still on plan A?" Gemma asked, her voice telling Len how much she was enjoying the secretive plan, aware that Len was bugged and could not talk.
"Yes!" Len replied "Are you still coming tonight?"
"Give me five" Gemma replied, hanging up. Len returned back to the party, walking up to Jasper and offering a subtle wink.
"See you soon" Len replied.
"Your majesty!" Harper called. Robert had obviously heard her but did not turn around. Choosing to ignore her. "YOUR MAJESTY" she called louder, which this time caught the attention of some people close by.
"Apologies, I as in a world of my own" Robert said, smiling falsely as he turned around.
"Do you have anything to say about the happy couple?" Harper asked, thrusting a tape recorder into his face.
'I am very proud of my sister, they are very happy together" Robert replied definitively. Harper did not reply, clearly expecting more of a speech from him. Robert sighed, and smiled again.
"They have been through an awful lot together, through a rollercoaster of their relationship but they have only come out stronger the other side" Robert said in almost a monotone. "It will be interesting and I am sure, inspiring to watch their relationship develop over time" he finished with a hint of amusement. Enough to make Harper wonder if he had been planning something. But she dared not mention it.
Robert raised the glass of champagne in his hand,
"To the happy couple" he stated, taking a sip and walking away leaving no time for further questions.
Harper had finished her attempt at an interview with Robert, and had moved on to some other guests when she received a look from Len. She set herself up, knowing that was the hint that Gemma would be arriving soon.
They had discussed before if she should arrive early, with Liam and be present for the whole evening, but as she was not necessarily a new face to the Royal Scene, they were worried that she could simply fade into the background and any happenings between her and Robert would be less significant.
Therefore, they decided unanimously to have Gemma make a big entrance, get a lot of media attention, and make a point that she had flown back specifically for Len and Jaspers wedding. Anything they planned, anything they had discussed. In the moment the doors opened everyone in the Suicide Squad realised just how redundant their suggestions were.
Gemma held herself with the grace, dignity and beauty that even Helena would have been proud of. The double doors opened, dramatically and the room fell silent. The guests turned towards the door, perhaps they were expecting Helena herself, it was the sort of Grand Entrance which would have been expected of The Queen.
They were surprised to see Gemma, as she walked in. She wore a long, floor length deep Burgandy red dress, which had a slit up her right leg, up to mid-thigh. It was backless, with a low V cut neckline. Her hair was in large curls cascading over one shoulder, ears adorned with large diamond studs, a matching necklace and bracelet.
She took a few steps into the room, the doors closing behind her. Every eye on her. She smiled down at everyone, as the entrance was a few steps elevated from the remainder of the room.
"I hope you are not all stopping the party just because I have arrived" Gemma teased. She got a few laughs before the music started again, and she meandered into the room. Robert was watching her with one eyebrow raised, as she walked though, greeting everyone by name as she walked in.
What surprised Robert most was how, as she walked around everyone, she not only knew everyone's names, but their partners, their company, children, even pets and hobbies. And yet, despite her felt closeness with every guest, she remained politically indifferent, professional regal and never once dropped the 'Royal' stance.
Harper Day had caught the view of Robert studying her, entertained, and made sure to take multiple videos of Gemma's interactions, capturing Robert in the background. He clearly looked much more amused with Gemma, than he had ever looked at Willow.
Eventually, once most of the room had exchanged pleasantries with Gemma, Robert picked up a glass of champagne from the tray beside him, and took a step towards her. She turned past him, and took three steps away, walking over to Liam, and embracing him in a passionate kiss.
No matter how amused, surprised or impressed Robert was with Gemma that evening, nothing had made his eyebrows rise higher into his hairline than watching her kiss Liam. It was as though he had forgotten about Kathryn, Robert glared at the young couple. A glare, which was not missed, and was filmed by Harper.
Perhaps two hours after Gemma had made her appearance, the attention had finally drifted off her, and back to the couple to wed. Whilst in any other circumstance, Len might have become frustrated with another woman taking the spotlight. However, tonight everything was playing out exactly as she had planned.
Robert saw Liam and Gemma stood over in the corner, facing one another. He walked up to them, having had a few drinks, and being rather pissed off with the party now, he walked over with the intention of stirring something between Liam and Gemma.
He went over and stood behind Gemma, facing Liam.
"Good evening" he greeted to both. "Gemma I must admit. I was surprised to see you tonight. I did not think that Liam had gotten over Kathryn so quickly" Robert hissed. Liam shot Robert a glare, partly as the ploy, but on the most part for having the indecency to bring Kathryn up. Gemma gave Liam a confused look
"Whose Kathryn?" she asked. As she did, Robert placed his hand on the back of Gemma, slipping it lower and cupping her ass through the thin, luxurious material. Gemma, subtly sidestepped away, out of arms reach from Robert. Unbeknownst to any of them, Harper caught the entire show on film.
Before Liam had a chance to explain who Kathryn was to Gemma, Robert told him that Len was asking for him. Wanting to get Gemma worked up, so he could be the one to calm her down, Robert wanted to keep the couple apart. It worked, and Liam walked off, leaving Gemma looking after him.
She sighed, and turned, taking a step or two away before Robert shot his hand out, catching Gemma arm, and pulling her back in, swinging her around. He placed his hands on her waist, holding her close. She went to take a step back, but he smiled at her.
"We can't be the only ones not dancing here, can we" he asked. She looked around and saw that everyone else around them were swaying. She rolled her eyes with a smile as she placed her arms around Robert's neck.
Really, she thought he was a slimy bastard. But she knew how important her role was, and she knew the sacrifice she was making. She put on a smile and carried on. Either; he would believe that she was interested, or he would recognise that she wasn't, and did it anyway. It was a win-win for the long goal.
"What are you doing back here?" Robert asked Gemma "I thought you were done with Liam years ago" he asked
"I happen to find him a remarkable individual" she replied "Unlike you" she added, with a hint of flirtation
'I am the King of England" Robert replied, eqully flirtatious
"Is that supposed to impress me?" Gemma asked, pressing her hips into his a little as they swayed, leaning her chest backwards to look him fully in the eye. Robert paused for a moment ebfore replying
"It used to" he said lowly to her, his voice getting deeper eyes darkening with suggestion.
"You're married" she replied after a few seconds of silence
"Since when you do possess a moral compass?" he asked
"What are you suggesting?" she replied
"You know what I'm suggesting" Robert confirmed
"There are a lot of people here tonight" Gemma replied slowly, in a hushed tone. "How about we be civil, and then we discuss this matter another time" she suggested. "In private" she added suggestively.
Robert smirked at her
"So you could be interested?" he asked, as the song finished.
She spun around under his arm, winked and walked away, without another word.
The slow songs carried on. Robert was tired. He was fed up. He had spent all night listening to people go on and on about how perfect a couple they are, how it would be wonderful to have another Royal wedding. How Jasper is perfect for Len and perfect for the Family.
Robert would be the first to admit that he was not much of a fan of Jasper to begin with, but after the last few hours of the party he was beginning to hate him.
That, combined with Gemma dancing so beautifully in Liams arms, he had, had enough. He placed his now empty glass down on the servers tray with enough force to send the tray clattering to the ground.
"Clean that up" Robert barked at her, before storming out of the room. Perhaps envious of the love between Len and Jasper. Perhaps regretting his decision in bride whom he did not trust to even attend the event. Gemma, however, was perfect. She knew protocol, she was loved by the press. All he needed was to get rid of the vermin of his brother which seemed parastitically attached to her.
He needed a win. He thought to himself. Something which would end the night. Would cause a fight between Len and Jasper and would make him appear as a hero in comparison to Liam to Gemma.
He wandered round the halls of the Palace, pleased that he was now away from all the people and the noise. It was getting far too much for him. He peaked a glance at his watch. Almost two o'clock in the morning.
He looked up as his hand felt a doorknob. Len's old room. Figures. His absent-minded walking had taken him in there.
The room was cold, well maintained, not a speck of dust in sight. But cold none the less. Unused, abandoned. He turned on the light, but it did little to make the room look more homely. Walking over to the table he saw one of her lighters left.
He picked it up and felt the cold material in the palm of his hand. He remembered the sister he had left before he went on his mission. The party girl who was high, drunk or both more often than she was sober.
He wondered if he had never gone if she would still be that girl. He knew that Jasper certainly would not be interested in her if she was. How he longed for those days, it was such a simpler time. With all due respect to Len, Jasper is a lot smarter. Robert was sure that Jasper would never find out the truth about his mission, but he still did not like having him around. The sooner he got rid of him, the better.
In a fit of devious rage, Robert flicked the lighter again, teasing it against the curtains, watching as the flames finally caught. He stood back admiring his work, walking to the door as he watched the flames as they licked up the curtains, rolling over the ceiling.
He walked out, closing the door behind him, and headed back out to the ball room.
Len and Jasper were dancing, unable to keep their hands off one another, the slow gentle beat encouraging them. Len was tired, she was ready to take Jasper to bed and do what she wanted, before getting the nights sleep which her body craved.
She had decided that after this song, she would thank everyone for coming, and bid them all a goodnight. A gesture Jasper was more than content with. However, by the second chorus of the song, a distant siren began, getting louder, and louder until it was in every room. She looked around. The fire alarm.
Sighing, she was sure that it was nothing. A candle too close to a detector, but then, on her next inhale, a tiny hint of something. Smoke. As the music died, the faint crackle of fire could be heard.
"FIRE!" Rosie called from the sides, James, Rosie and the other security aides ushering people out as the sprinklers started to go off.
James had Len and Jasper by the arm, pulling them outside as Rosie came out with Liam and Gemma.
Cyrus, Violet and a few others came running out too. Violet looked at the burning palace with tears in her eyes. The flames reflecting in the wet droplets. Cyrus held her close.
A distressed, pyjama-clad Willow was brought out by security, being shielded from the party guests, noted that Robert had not gone over to see how his wife was. Now outside, Len and Jasper looked up, they could see the extend of the fire. Over two floors, most of the Eastern Wing was engulfed in flames. Windows had breached and the flames shot out, licking up the walls as thick, black smoke was forced out.
Len knew that her room was involved, as was Liams, and a few of the guest rooms. Robert's room however, the other side, was fine. Despite the sprinkler system in almost every room, the fire seemed to be raging on.
In the distance, blue lights and sirens could be heard, but the length of the driveway meant that the Fire Service were still a few minutes away.
James came running back over to Len and Jasper, who once out, he had left to go and help others out.
"What's wrong?" Jasper asked, seeing the look on James' face.
"It's Sara Alice. I can't find her" James replied in a single breath.
Without a single word, thought or look back, Jasper was running back towards the door, disappearing inside, Len, Rosie, James and everyone else shouting at him to come back.
James followed him up to the doors, but the wind changed, and he was met by a wall of smoke and flame. Coughing, he stepped away, shouting their names into the abyss of the smoke, unable to get through.
Inside, the smoke covered the ceilings. An ominous orange-grey glow creating a haze through the room. Jasper pulled his jacket over his mouth and nose, trying to block the smoke out. His eyes began to water from the smoke.
"SARA ALICE" He shouted, listening over the 'whoosh' of smoke and crackle of fire, he did not hear a reply. He ran back into the ballroom, which was less smoky than the rest of the Palace.
"SARA ALICE" He called again. Holding his breath to try to hear better. Distantly he heard a cough, and a shout. It came from the kitchen. He ran down towards the kitchen, to see Sara Alice hiding under the island.
He ran over to her, and she wrapped her arms around him. The smoke was quickly filling the kitchen, Jasper looked around and found the orange glow flickering at the kitchen door. He knew he could not get back out that way. Not with Sara Alice anyway, he would not risk her getting burned or hurt more than she already was.
He glanced around, there was the utility room, with a door, but the door went around the other side of the Palace. He looked up. The window!
He picked up Sara Alice, pressing her into his shoulder, so she had some filtration from the smoke. He tried to push the window open, but it was locked shut. Looking around, beginning to panic now but determined not to let it show.
With Sara Alice placed on his hip, he picked up a heavy based saucepan off the stove. Turning his body to shield Sara Alice as much as possible, he threw the pan at the window, ducking to avoid the glass as it shattered. Using a second pan to tap the remaining glass out of the frame.
He looked out the window. Clean air, but it was a drop to the floor. Over a metre. He picked up Sara Alice and looked out the window. He could see Liam in the distance. He shouted as loud as he could.
Amazingly, Liam heard, and came running over. Much to Rosie's anger.
"Catch her" Jasper shouted. Liam nodded, holding his arms out and up.
"Sara Alice, listen to me. I need to get you out this window, Liam will catch you, alright" Jasper said softly but hurriedly to her. She nodded, understanding.
"Keep your knees bent, ok" he told her, holding her hands, and slipping her out the window, lowering her down.
"I've got her!" Liam called, praying with every inch of his soul, Jasper let go, watching as she fell down, being caught in Liams arms. Jasper then pulled himself into the window, lowering down and dropping to the floor, catching his hand on a piece of glass from the frame as he did.
He landed on the floor, standing up to see Liam carrying Sara Alice, running over to the ambulance which had arrived. Jasper walked over, following them, watching as James ran over, relieved to see her.
He jumped when Len came over to join him, wrapping her arms around him, looking at his smoke-filled suit, soot covered face, and blood dripping from his hand.
It was around midday. Len and Jasper were still in bed. Having had such an eventful end to their Engagement Party, it was almost 5am by the time they got home. As most of the guest rooms in the Palace were destroyed, damaged or smoke-filled. Len and Jasper had offered some rooms out.
Sara Alice had been taken to hospital for the night, she was fine, but they wanted to observe her for a little just to be safe. James had stayed with her. Liam's room, like Lens had been destroyed. So, he and Gemma had gone back to Len and Jasper's, with the Grand Duchess and Earl.
Len had awoken first. Jasper still smelt of smoke. He had showered multiple times when they got back. But there was something about that type of smoke which just stuck to you. The worst was off, but the faint smell remained. He had a small bandage on his hand from the glass wound.
She rolled over, straddling his sleeping body, as she stirred beneath her
"Good morning" he muttered softly
"Did I tell you, you're a hero?" she teased
"The Firefighter said I was stupid" Jasper laughed back
"You ran into a burning building. I don't blame them. But to me you're brave. My hero. You saved Sara Alice" she replied
"It was nothing" he replied humbly
"We'll go see her later on. James text to say they're back home now" Len replied
"Sounds like a plan" Jasper replied
"But..." Len said suggestively, rocking her hips into his, he smirked at her "We have some time to kill" she added. Jasper growled deeply at her suggestion, and in a moment flipped them, hooking his arm under one knee and lifting it up over his shoulder.
"I get my Heroes reward?" he teased back
"You would make the hottest fireman" she replied
A while later. With a slight limp and a large smile, Len walked out of her and Jasper's room. Only earing her pyjamas, she intended to go to the kitchen to get some glasses of water for both her and Jasper. They were both in need of it after their new-found fantasy.
She heard another door open and watched as Earl slipped out of the Grand Duchesses room, hiding round the corner so he could not see her, he quietly closed the door, and slipped back into his own room.
She smirked to herself. Something to keep in the back pocket if she ever needed it. She continued to the kitchen, skip in her step.
Len and Jasper were preparing to leave for James' Hill's house when they received a message from the front gate to say that he had arrived. They put the kettle on and a few moments later, Sara Alice knocked on the door. Len answered, and gave Sara Alice a big hug. Once finished, Sara Alice jumped out of Lens arms and over to Jasper hugging him, and giving him a pile of papers.
"While I was waiting for the doctor, they gave me some paper and colouring pencils" she explained as Jasper sat on the chair, she sat on his lap and began to talk through her drawings.
"Thats me stuck in the fire, and that one is you, as a hero. Then this is you saving me, and this one is you if you looked like a pirate, and this is you with a cape because you're a superhero" she explained
"They are brilliant" Jasper complimented
"Thank you. You can keep them if you want" she replied
"I think I'll put them up on the wall. We need some art up in here" Jasper said pointing to the bare walls.
Another knock, and in walked Helena. She had come alone, without Mark this time. She hugged Len and Jasper.
"I am so sorry I missed the party, as soon as I heard about the fire I came straight back. Mark did not want to, but I told him I had to come back for you. Is everyone ok?" she asked
"Everyone is fine" Len confirmed. "We lost a bit of the Palace, but everyone is ok" she confirmed
"We almost lost me!" Sara Alice said loudly "But Jasper ran back inside and found me. He was a hero! He even cut his hand because there was so much smoke we had to get out through a window" She explained. Helena raised an eyebrow in shock at them.
"Seriously?" She asked Len, who nodded
"He's a hero" Len confirmed, pressing a kiss to Jasper's cheek.
Armed with a strong cup of tea, Helena was telling them about Mark insisting she moved back into the Palace, and Len telling her that it was just hers and Liams rooms which were affected. Her room, Roberts and Willow's were perfectly fine.
"Damn" Helena cursed
A knock came at the door.
"It's busy today" Rosie commented, as she opened the door to see Harper, smiling.
"Afternoon" she greeted, stepping inside
"You look rather chipper" Helena commented
"I have three wonderful articles ready to go" Harper explained
"I'll go get the others" Len said, she walked into the lounge and called Liam and Gemma through, before knocking on The Grand Duchess and Earl Frosts doors, telling them to come to the kitchen.
Gemma was greeting Helena with a hug when Earl walked in, greeting everyone as he did. The Grand Duchess came through a few moments later, even in the subtle home of Len and Jasper her introductions were still glamorous.
She stepped forwards and hugged Len, Jasper, Gemma, Liam and Helena, passing a greeting to Harper and James, smiling at Sara Alice. She turned to Earl and scoffed.
"Good morning" she replied coldly. Len stifled a laugh, which was caught by both Earl and Jasper, who chose to ignore her in that moment.
"Harper has some articles to show us" Jasper explained. She opened her laptop and flicked the articles onto the TV in the kitchen.
"I have three, which I will release soon. The first one is about Liam's heart felled speech, and you might be able to see Robert's face in the corner" she explained, subtle enough to have not been the intention of the article, but enough that it would certainly get picked up on by other viewers.
Article read, compliments passed, Harper moved on to the next one.
"The second is a little controversial" she said. Showing an online video of Gemma's grand entrance, with a line 'Liam's Lover Returns'. "This is to bring Gemma back to the spotlight, and to show the people she is Liam's" Harper explained.
They watched the video of Gemma's entrance and Helena was very complimentary.
"Do you think this one is really necessary?" Liam asked.
"It is, because of two reasons. Firstly, I have a video of Robert groping Gemma's ass, and her moving away from him, which I will post anonymously. Secondly, because the smile on Robert's face when Gemma enters, is bigger than any throughout the night. A little creative editing in a few days' time, release that comparison, and the conspiracy begins" she said
"If you think that's best" Liam agreed
"I think it would help turn the people away from Robert. Anyone who was still loyal to him, would have seen a married man jealous of his brother's girlfriend, and touch me up" Gemma explained
"As long as you are ok with this being released" Len said to Gemma, who nodded with a smile"
"Alright. And the last one, is of the fire. A few pictures, a few interviews. But this being the key selling point" Harper said, showing a video of Jasper lowering Sara Alice out the window, being caught by Liam.
"Two heroes, saving the little girl" she visualised the headline. "This will be our key takeaway from the fire. Well, that and Robert being the cause of it" she explained. Everyone turned to her at that point
"He what?" Helena asked, shocked
"Well, I happened to be interviewing when Robert walked out, then walked back in as the smoke alarms started in the background. Not something I am ready to release just yet. I will wait until the Fire officers release their official report... But nice to keep in the back pocket"
"So when are we going to release these articles?" Liam asked
"The one about the speeches and the fire today, the one of Gemma either tomorrow or the day after, I will see how people react to these first. The fire will be big news, so I don't want Gemma's article going under the radar" she explained
They all agreed, and meeting over, Jasper recited the story again, aided by Sara Alice, of his heroic actions.
Jasper and Len decided to go back to the Palace with Helena, wanting to see just how much damage there was from the fire, as it had been confirmed that it started in her room. Of course, when she and Jasper moved out the most of their belongings went with them, but a few fond memories, trinkets and some clothes which they could not fit in their cottage had remained in the Palace.
They walked up to the gates, Helena walking towards Robert, prepared to ask permission to move back into the Palace. Something she knew he had requested and orchestrated through Mark. And yet, she still needed to beg. Admit she was wrong for moving out. She hated it. But she knew she had to play his game.
Len and Jasper walked through the corridors. There was a very strong smell of smoke and burn throughout the Palace. It was a horrible smell, one which stuck in the back of their throats.
They rounded the corner to the doorway to their rooms. Or what was the doorway. The charred, splintered wooden door had burned through, and the frame was redundant. Even parts of the wall had burned through.
Nothing remained in their bedroom. Their bed was a few charred springs, and the fabrics had melted and burned through into a solid black form. It was nothing like the room they knew and loved. It was alien.
Len barely took three steps inside the room. Stopping. Eyes flicking between every burned, melted, scorched, blackened and incinerated item she had once loved and cherished.
Jasper walked over to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulder and she let a few tears silently slip down her cheek. They stayed for a few moments longer, before Jasper walked them out of the room. Supporting Len as they vacated.
That evening, Len and Jasper sat on the sofas in their cottage. An empty bottle of wine sat on the coffee table and both their glasses were full. They were going through some drama they had gotten into, a murder mystery cross love affair style show.
It was during the ad break that Jasper skipped onto the news
"I really don't want to see another report about the fire" Len complained
"I know. But Harper said her one would be on tonight, I want to see what footage they put through, if it had anything against Robert" Liam explained
"You just want to see your hero news article again" Len teased
"Don't you?" he teased back. They watched it, and showed the footage of Robert walking towards the hall, away from the fire. Suspiciously. Lighter still in his hand. Nothing more was said, but it was obvious. Len picked up her phone and opened the news app, already there were plenty of comments coming in against Robert.
She showed Jasper and the couple shared a smile.
Liam and Jasper sat in the Swan Inn. Liam had become something of a regular. His aides being required to accompany him, Robert not allowing any 'private' meetings, but remained respectfully by the door, allowing Liam to chat in peace.
Robert was less than thrilled when Liam said he was meeting Jasper to discuss wedding arrangements but allowed Liam to go anyway. They met, got a pint each and sat down at the table.
"How are you?" Jasper asked Liam. He had been moved swiftly to the guest room of the Palace, as his was severely affected by the fire.
"Feel like an alien, but I suppose that pretty much sums everything up" he explained. Jasper offered a sympathetic smile
"There's always a room with us if you want" he explained
"I'd love to. But They would move me out as quick as they moved mum" he replied
"Well, then how about an excuse to spend more time at ours?" Jasper offered
"What do you mean?" Liam asked
"I was chatting to Len, well. Actually, I was telling her, one of the few times I've put my foot down" Jasper began
"You are a brave man!" Liam replied
"It might actually be the first and only time I ever do" Jasper replied laughing "But I said she can have the wedding she wants, I will go along with whatever she wants" he explained
"You're a braver man than I thought. And perhaps a little stuid and certainly, are going to regret that!" Liam laughed
"Quite probably all three. But as long as she's happy, I am. But I had one request for the wedding" he explained
"What's that?" Liam asked
"I want you to be my best man" Jasper said. Liam lowered his pint before he had a chance to take a sip
"You're kidding" he said, his smile beaming from ear to ear
"No. You are the closest thing I've had to a brother; you have always been the most supportive of me and Len. There is no one I want more up there with me" he explained
"Yes! I'd be honoured!" Liam replied, and the two exchanged a hug
"Good" Jasper replied, relieved, downing half his pint in a single gulp
"Who else is in the wedding party?" Liam asked
"Rosie is maid of honour, Violet and Sarah Alice as bridesmaids. Cyrus as a groomsman. I suppose Robert will be too, but I'm sort of hoping he doesn't come" Jasper explained
"Good people, and as much as I admire your wishful thinking, I very much doubt that" Liam replied sympathetically
"Me too" Jasper said, rolling his eyes and the pair shared a laugh.
Liam and Gemma were in a secluded restaurant. A small Village in the county of Herefordshire. It was beautiful, but blissfully quiet. They had opted for a late lunch, arriving at around three o'clock in the afternoon. A few customers having a drink by the stoked log fire, and a few clearly local patrons sat at the bar fruitlessly flirting with the barmaids. Otherwise, it was empty.
The couple were granted a secluded, private room, with their own wood burner and a window that looked out on the garden, adorned with seasonal flowers, wildlife, and even a pond.
"I need to make sure you are ok" Liam said as he raised his glass to his lips. Gemma had a glass of white wine before her which flickered in the firelight.
"Why would you think that I wasn't?" Gemma asked
"Because we are asking an awful lot of you. We are asking you to willingly put yourself out there to become the enemy, to seduce the king, to be potentially assaulted and harassed by him, and to risk everything for us" Liam explained
"If I play my role right, I am the victim, and he is the villain. I am willing to put myself on the line, because I know how important the outcome is" Gemma explained
"Tell me if it gets too much. There is a contingency plan. We can get you out of it" Liam assured her
"I appreciate that, but I assure you it will not be necessary" Gemma replied confidently
"You're so confident" Liam replied
"I know my place in this. I know where I stand, what my purpose and duty is. I know the outcome, and I know what we are all fighting for" she explained
"The stag and hen parties are this weekend" Liam said
"Are you telling me it is time for phase two?" she asked
"Only if you are comfortable" he replied. She gave a loud, genuine laugh
"I get to sleep with the king of England. There are much worse places to be" she explained
"Again, you seem so confident. Are you sure you are ok with this?" Liam asked
"I am. I promise you" she replied
"You would tell me if you weren't?" he asked
"I would" Gemma replied. Liam raised his glass, they clinked and took a sip
Len walked into the Palace garden. Despite the early October, her mother lay on a recliner, secluded in the garden, sunbathing, taking in whatever rays she could. Len walked over and sat down on the sunbed next to her. Slowly, reluctantly but with a hint of curiosity, Helena looked towards the body next to her, raising her sunglasses to assess who it was.
Seeing it was her daughter she pulled the glasses back down onto her face, turning away to once more top up her tan
"Hello dear" she said to not be rude
"I'm planning my hen party this weekend" Len said bluntly. This made Helena sit up abruptly and look towards her daughter
"Are you?" she asked
"I would love it if you would join me" she explained. Helena did not need any contemplation time, although knew, she had to at least feign thought. "Oh. Are you?" she asked. Len rolled her eyes at the realisation that her invitation would be hard work. They both knew that since she had moved back into the Palace, it would be suspicious if they were getting on well. They had to have some of the friction which they had mastered before. Robert was always listening. Watching. They could never be too careful.
"I am" Len replied. Helena thought for a moment, once more puling her glasses down her nose and looking over the top of her lenses at Len.
"That is very gracious. I would be honoured" Helena replied. As much as Len hated the formality of sophistication, she knew that meant that she was looking forward to attending. She smiled, pressed a light kiss to her mother's cheek before walking off, back into the Palace.
Cyrus was laying naked on a massage bed in his room. Violet had gone shopping, havnig been invited to Len's hen do, she was eager to go and purchase a new outfit. Cyrus had decided to take a little 'me' time whilst she was gone.
He had a small towel protecting his modesty, whislt six masseauses worked over his body. His moans and groans echoing through the halls of the Palace.
Jasper and Liam could hear him before they even rounded the corner to his suites in the Palace. Jasper paused, wondering if they should come back another time, determined not to catch Cyrus in a compromising position. Liam, who was used to his uncles antics saw the look of hesitation on Jasper's face.
"Don't worry, he's alone. You would hear if there was someone else with him" Liam assured him. Reluctant, but trusting Liam, Jasper continued walking. They found his doors open, and watched the scene before them, as Liam raised his hand and knocked loudly on the door.
"ARRGHHH: Cyrus shouted, listing his head up from the hole and hissing at the two men in the doorway
"What? Can't you see I'm busy!" he growled
"We can, and I promise you we do not want to interrupt you" Liam replied
"And yet here you are" Cyrus snarked
"Just one question" Liam responded
"What's that?" he asked
"Saturday after next, would you like to join me, Liam Brandon Boone and James Hill in my Stag Party?" Jasper offered
"Anyone else coming?" Cyrus asked
"No one else has been invited" Jasper replied
"Not even strippers. Well, no point in going then is there" he stated putting his head back down onto the table.
"We could consider it" Jasper offered
"That's the best I'm going to get isn't it" Cyrus said, head still down
"Yes" Liam replied
"I'm in" Cyrus agreed
"Wonderful. We'll leave you to you... That" Liam said pointing to the six masseuses stood bored, waiting. And the pair walked out the room.
A few days later, Len and Jasper hosted a dinner at their cottage. They had invited Robert and Willow to not be suspicious, but had not been expecting them to attend. They were right, and the couple, well, Robert, sent his apologies.
However, Helena, Cyrus, Violet and Liam were all there. Along with Rosie and James. Sarah Alice was invited to the wedding, but with James' agreement, she was not to attend the hen do. Which upon second thought, was agreed unanimously, except of course Sarah Alice.
Len had reasoned with her that they would have their own party. A tea party with dresses, and tea, sandwiches and scones in the gardens. This satisfied the young girl.
Robert had not been invited to the Stag do. It was a topic of conversation as he had invited Jasper to his, however. After the offence Jasper had received, he was less than willing to invite Robert.
Willow however was to be invited to Len's hen do, although it was almost a given that she would be refused attendance by Robert. Rosie, who had not yet seen the true restrictiveness of Robert's hold over his wife, requested she attend the invitation, as she remembered Willow when she was friends with Liam, and was sure that she would not stand for that. Despite the raised eyebrows in the room, she was granted that task.
Despite neither Robert nor Willow attending, they still agreed to have a 'no plan talk' rule at the parties. Partly because they did not want to make the parties a statement, but more so, they could not confirm that they would not be overheard.
Rosie and Len strolled through the Palace. They had begun the restoration works on the fire-damaged rooms. Robert was making a point of changing everything. Len's previously dark and borderline gothic-esque room was now painted clinical white.
Her carefully selected artwork, paintings and artifacts which gave the room character and soul, had all been destroyed in the fire. The chosen replacements were bland, boring and dull paintings. A few statue heads, marble of course, matching the already anaemic white room. The occasional Vase which was decorative only and cost more than a standard domestic house and was under no circumstances to be touched.
Walking past the halls, trying her best to not remember what it once was, Len rounded into the drawing room, where Robert sat with a cup of tea and his newspaper, and Willow sat in the corner with her book. They both looked up when she walked in
"Len. What a welcome yet unexpected surprise" Robert said. He stood and hugged her obligatory. The hug lasted half a second before they both pulled away, Robert returning to his seat.
"To what do I owe the pleasure" Robert asked. Clearly not recognising his wife in the room. Rosie already looked appalled. Len wondered if she would be able to bite her tongue.
"Actually, I came in to ask Willow a question" Len replied
"Oh?" Robert asked with a tone of disapproval and curiosity. "What's that?" he asked. Despite Robert clearly intending to answer for her, Len looked up to Willow in the corner, who had placed her book down on the table, looking over to Len with a soft smile
"I was wondering if you would join me on my hen do" Len said
"Unfortunately, Willow is unavailable" Robert replied
"I did not say when it was" Len reminded him. Robert thought for a moment before continuing
"Irrelevant. She has plenty of duties, she is unable to waste her time partying with you. Besides, we all know how that is going to go. That is hardly a scene the wife of the King of England should be seen in" Robert said
"That is such a shame. I was really looking forward to spending some time with her" Len replied
"Well after how she handled her own hen party, which I am sure you had something to do with her getting drugged, I think it's a very responsible decision that she does not go. Someone needs to maintain an element of decorum" Robert said dismissively.
Knowing it was not a battle worth fighting, Len nodded, and walked out without a single 'goodbye'.
Back in the car on the way back, Len had made sure that she had her own vehicles and drivers who were under strict instructions to watch their vehicles to stop any trackers, audio or recordings from occurring. It was one of the few places outside of the cottage that they could talk freely.
"May I speak freely?" Rosie asked Len
"When don't you?" Len replied with a smile
"Good point. What a bastard!" she shouted
"We told you" Len assured her
"And I knew he was a dick but come on. Answering for her. He did not even call her the Queen!| That's her title! And he referred to himself as the King!" She cried Len laughed to herself as Rosie ranted the whole way home.
By the time they returned to the cottage, she had got her anger out, and sat in a state of disbelief.
"I just can't believe it" Rosie said quietly
"This is what we're fighting for" Len replied.
- Two Weeks Later -
There was a knock on the door, Jasper answered. He knew it was Liam coming to pick him up for his stag, but aside from the date and time he knew nothing about it.
A long black limo was in the background as a smartly dressed Liam beamed. Jasper smiled and they walked out the door. Liam clapping him on the back.
Inside the Liam, James, Brandon and Cyrus sat inside, beer in hand. Liam got in, followed by Jasper, and they passed beers around
"Where are we going?" Jasper asked
"You'll have to wait and see" Liam teased.
After ten minutes of driving and polite conversation, which mostly consisted of enjoyment over the fact that Robert had not invited himself, to 'oversee' or 'chaperone' which was a worry which Liam had
They then arrived at a local marina. Getting out of the limo they then moved onto a larger of the boats in the dock. They got on, and already there were women holding trays of champagne. Whilst not strippers per-se, there were plenty of waitresses with skin on show. It was a lovely day, and the sun was bright against the water.
The boat set out into the water, and some light music played as the conversation continued. More wedding plans, and mentions of the honeymoon. Avoiding all possible mentions of Robert.
Len, Helena, Violet and Rosie were sat in a spa. Len had picked it. It was a distance away, down in Cornwall. One which had plenty of good reviews. It had not been suggested by anyone. It was something she had found.
They had their 'no Robert talk' rule, but they wanted to be safe. Besides. Anyone who was a contact would be keeping an ear out. A small business miles away would be much more appreciative of the custom, business and promotion.
The four sat in chairs in the treatment room. Currently getting manicures and pedicures respectively.
"I have to admit, you and Jasper do make a wonderful couple" Helena admitted
"I can honestly say I have never been this happy before" Len replied
"And it shows. When I first met you, albeit briefly, you were spending all your time at parties, drinking, the drugs. But ever since you met Jasper, you've just been. Well like this whole new person" Violet said
"Jasper is such a great guy" Rosie added
"The best!" Len agreed. "How about you mum? How are things with you and Mark?"
"Oh" Helena replied glumly. "Honestly I just don't trust him. His alliance is not with me. I have to triple check everything I say before I say it, in fear that I shoot myself in the foot" Helena explained
"Why don't you just break it off?" Len asked
"I worry about who will come next" she admitted "I wish I felt what you feel with Simon. The closest I came since Alistair was Spencer, but none of anything I ever had comes close to what I see between you and Jasper" Helena said. She picked up her glass and calle a toast
"To Len and Jasper" she called
"To Len and Jasper" they replied. Taking a sip.
The captain docked the boat and the group of men got off. Following Liam as he led them to an island bar. A small island where the only thing on it was a bar. Some tables outside but flashing lights inside. It was quiet, secluded. A few guests but certainly quieter than anywhere else on a Saturday night.
They walked inside and were immediately met by bouncers, offering their own protection to the elite group. Cyrus' eyes bulged out of his head as he looked over to the strippers and private dancers in the corner
"Now this is a stag do" he said as he sulked off towards the women, Brandon following. Leaving Liam, James and Jasper to get a table and watch the ballsier pair.
Robert sat in his office, going over some papers when the door opened. He looked up from his work and was surprised to see Gemma gliding in
"Aren't you at the Hen party?" He asked
"I was not invited" Gemma replied, leaning over the other side of the desk at Robert displaying a large amount of cleavage. Robert looked up, before putting down the papers he was working on, and looking Gemma in the eye.
"I'll be honest. I am surprised to see you" Robert began
"I could not turn down the King of England, could I" she asked
"Well, you found it rather easy to do the other night" Robert replied dismissively
"Unlike that wife of yours, I understand the importance of perception and appearances when in the public eye" Gemma explained
"That is refreshing to hear. Where were you when I was looking for a bride?" Robert asked longingly
"Sleeping with your brother" Gemma replied quickly
"Very funny" Robert laughed "Seems the only thing depriving you form being the perfect woman, is your taste in men" he added
"I am here, aren't I?" Gemma smirked, pulling her shawl off her shoulders, and dropping it carelessly onto the floor.
"And what are you here for?" Robert asked standing up and walking round to her side of the desk, chest to chest with her now.
"If you have to ask, then you are not the man I thought you were" Gemma replied, placing her hand on his chest. He lowered his lips to hers, and captured them in a deep, passionate kiss. His hands sliding down from her waist, down her outer thighs and cupping her ass firmly before trailing back up to the zip and lowering it down.
Concealing her newly exposed skin with his own body, she stepped out of the dress. Robert smirked at the lack of underwear beneath. Wearing only her heels, he picked her up, and sat her on the desk, leaning her back on his long-forgotten paperwork he lowered himself between her thighs, as her head leant back against the desk.
They were on their third bottle of Champagne between the four ladies, they had got the giggles quite a while ago, and now were simply enjoying the buzz.
The salon workers had finished the manicures and pedicures and were now simply pampering. Face masks, massages, listening to the gossip and laughing when appropriate.
"Now. I know your mother is here so I totally get it if you don't want to talk about it. But I HAVE to ask. What's Jasper like in bed?" Violet gushed. Helena remained silent, Rosie and Violet did not know about her fling with Jasper when he first came to the Palace. Perhaps it was better that they did not know. Especially when there was a chance of being overheard.
"It's fine, carry on. I am rather curious myself" Helena said, as she understood that they were waiting for her approval to continue the conversation.
"He's the best I've ever had" Len said truthfully
"Come on! Some details, please!" Rosie requested
"What do you want to know?" Len laughed
"Size?" Violet urged. This time it was Len that blushed. She was sure that Jasper would not approve of them having this discussion.
"Well, I've never really measured" she replied
"Give us an estimate then" Violet suggested
"Eight inches? Girthy too" Len blushed
"Lucky!" Violet breathed
"What about technique? Positions? What is he like?" Rosie asked
"He varies. Sometimes he is so loving, so sweet. Just gives everything to me. Other times, he has this deep seductive need, where he just takes" Len said. "So passionate, so dominant..." Len trailed off. The girls all giggled. Helena smiling, but it had been noticed that she had not taken part.
They moved the conversation on.
Liam and Jasper remained at the table. Brandon had excused himself to the restroom half an hour ago. At some point the pair knew they should check on him, but considering the way the brunette waitress who was finishing her shift was looking at him, they decided that a little longer on his own would probably be appreciated.
Cyrus was attempting to hit on the three strippers who were in the corner, already bored with him, and he was clearly out of money. Liam leant over to Jasper
"You know" he began "I honestly could not have asked for a better husband for Len. You are the brother I never had" Liam said.
Jasper opened his mouth to reply, but could not think of anything to say that would explain just how much Liams words meant to him. He instead leant over and clapped Liam on the back.
"I love her so much" Jasper said quietly
"I know. We all know" Liam assured him. They clinked glasses and took another sip.
The pair turned their attention to the commotion in the corner, as they watched one of the girls throw a drink over Cyrus and the other kick him squarely in the chest, leaving a perfect stiletto imprint.
"I think we'd best go" James replied walking back over to the table. "I'll go find Brandon" he finished, walking off.
Liam and Jasper exchanged a look.
Len rolled over in bed to feel Jasper next to her. She knew she had drunk rather a lot last night, but she had not remembered him coming in. But she could recognise his body anywhere. His smell, his muscles.
She pulled her body against his and his hand came over to stoke her waist, over her hip and down her thigh. She moaned lightly, her arousal growing. Unable to hold off more, she pulled her body onto his, straddling him. Pulling off her top. His eyes open, wide awake. She could feel his own excitement against her.
"Hey" she whispered to him, before he flipped them, his lips buried in her neck
"Hey yourself" he replied.
