Peter woke the next morning, later than usual, to a call from Dr. Bloom that Max's wife was in critical condition. Bloom had called 911 and doctors directly from New Amsterdam but they would need all hands on deck.
He sighed as he moved to wake Embry, thinking to himself, 'So much for getting her to slow down,' he thought to himself.
"Embry," he whispered, causing her to stir, "Don't panic but Georgia is in trouble and we need to get to the hospital once they bring her and Max in."
Embry woke with a start once she heard Max's name, "I'll be ready to walk out the door in two minutes," she stated as she hauled herself from the bed, grabbing a ponytail from the nightstand on her way to their closet.
Peter got up, as well, and grabbed a pair of scrubs, laughing to himself as he did because it reminded him of his first day working with Max.
The couple was ready in record time and made their commute to the hospital. When they arrived, things were far worse than they could have ever expected.
"Where's Max?" Embry asked as she looked around the bays in the ED, where she was unable to find Bloom.
Casey walked up to her after he'd just heard the latest report, "Dr. Costa, the ambulance our team was in was involved in an accident. They're being brought in now. We're not sure about any of their status at the moment."
Embry handed Peter a stethoscope, "We're going to need you. Are you good to join us in this crisis?"
Peter grasped her hand, squeezing it tightly, "Of course. I'm here for whatever you need me for."
After he agreed, the paramedics brought in their people.
Embry rushed to Max's side to check on the baby while she had confidence in the neurosurgeon taking care of Georgia.
"Max, I need to examine her," Embry challenged as he clung to his daughter.
Max seemed to come out of the fog distracting him as he handed Luna to Embry.
Embry took her time looking over the baby to ensure there was nothing wrong with her. After thirty minutes, she called Max over to her, "Luna is perfect," she announced as she passed the baby to her Father. "How's Georgia?" she asked as she felt her own stomach tighten, sure it was only Braxton Hicks.
Max shook his head, "She had a brain bleed. She was taken to surgery. I haven't heard anything."
Embry took a deep breath as she saw Peter catch onto her actions, "I'll go find out what's going on. Take a seat," she instructed as she ushered him to the doctor's lounge, handing him a bottle for the baby.
As Embry reached the OR, she was met by Fulton at her side.
"Are you alright?" he questioned as he noted that she was still cradling her bump.
She nodded as she leaned against him, "I'm good. I'm just having some Braxton Hicks contractions from all the excitement. Don't worry, babe," she added as she felt his hand join hers on her bump.
Once she had Fulton reassured, she waved to the surgeon to get an update on Georgia. What she received was the last thing she wanted as she shook his head in her direction.
The surgeon's head shake caused Embry to start to slowly lose her footing as Fulton grasped her elbow and back, holding her up.
"What is it, my dear?" he asked, his accent coming through even through his exhaustion.
Embry took a deep breath, trying to gather herself, "Georgia didn't make it," she confessed as she felt her knees buckle.
Luckily Casey was around and he moved her into a wheelchair with Fulton's help so they could go share the bad news with Max.
"How do I tell him?" Embry asked once Casey and Fulton had her back in the ED, her Braxton Hicks in full bloom now from the stress.
Fulton took a deep breath, "I'll take care of this for you. Your body can't handle the stress of the pregnancy and this stress. Don't worry, I've done this before," he assured her as he started to walk away only to feel his wrist grasped between her fingers.
Embry stood, taking a deep breath, "I have to do it. He's my best friend," she shared as she grabbed a bottle of water and started taking sips to ease the Braxton Hicks she was experiencing as she walked up to Max.
His head cocked to the side when he saw her, "How's Georgia? Luna drank that formula you gave me like a champ," he stated as he noticed the deep sadness in her eyes as he also noted how she was gripping her own baby bump.
Max gestured for Fulton to join them as his concern for Embry grew.
Fulton did as Max requested and stood there as he placed his hand on his girlfriend's baby bump while she prepared to share the awful news.
"Max," Embry began, feeling her bottom lip tremble. Her guilt growing from the past months of pushing Helen in his direction. "Georgia had an extensive brain bleed and she didn't make it," she stated as matter-of-factly as she could. "I'm so sorry, Max," she went on, "I know you won't believe that I'm truly sorry about this, but I promise that I am," she stated through sobs as she felt Max wrap his arms around her.
"I know," he sobbed into her ear as Fulton continued to support her while she and Max commiserated over his loss.
