Elena was sitting on the ground in front of Elijah's coffin. She was pretty sure she'd been trapped in that room for close twenty-four hours, as it was starting to get dark. She'd seen Stefan once since he'd locked her in there. He brought her breakfast and a couple of bottles of water. He barely said a word to her before walking away and locking the door again.
Elena could hardly believe this was happening. She was being held captive by the man she loved in an attempt to use her against her psychopathic ancestor. It was breaking her. It wasn't the fact that she'd been kidnapped. It was hardly the first time she'd been kidnapped, and Stefan was a lot kinder than other abductors had been, but the fact that it was Stefan hurt more than any physical blow could. She loved Stefan more than anything. She had never given up hope that she and Damon could get through to him and bring out the old Stefan. Until now. She didn't think there was any coming back for them after this. He cared so little for her that he was willing to use her as bait to hurt Klaus.
The worst part was that Elena could no longer blame Klaus for Stefan's actions. Klaus hadn't made Stefan do this. Yes, he turned off Stefan's humanity, but Elena was starting to doubt that his humanity was still off. He was doing this because he hated Klaus. Elena was hardly an expert on the matter, but she did know that hate was a human emotion. It was an emotion Stefan couldn't feel if he had no humanity. That made his actions so much. It meant that he knew that what he was doing was wrong, but chose to anyway. It also meant that the Stefan she loved was truly gone.
Elena sighed. She felt helpless. She'd lost Stefan, and now she was trapped as his prisoner. Her only hope now was that Klaus at least cared enough about her blood to try to save her. That thought caused Elena to laugh. She couldn't believe how bad things had gotten. Her hero had become her captor, and she was waiting for the man that actually killed her once to come rescue her. It was her only option though. She had to wait for someone to stop Stefan.
After a few moments, a thought popped into Elena's mind. That actually wasn't her only option. She had one other one, one that would at least not have her relying on Klaus, who was at best a wild card, to save her.
Elena stood up and turned to face Elijah's coffin. She opened it up, and to no surprise, found him still laying there with no signs of life in him. That would change if she removed the dagger. Elijah could get her out of there with no problem, and Elena had no doubt that he would. He would help her even without the knowledge that she was the product of his family line. The problem was that Stefan had been right when he said that Elijah and his siblings would be starving when they woke.
Elena tried to think of a solution. She could let Elijah feed from her, but she didn't know if he'd be able to stop himself before he drained her dry. The only other option was to maybe collect some of her blood and give him that. Then she could be across the room while he fed. Hopefully that would be enough to get him to gain control of himself before he accidently killed her. She could use one of the water bottles Stefan gave her to collect the blood.
The problem was that Elena's plan was still risky. She had to make sure she didn't cut too deep that she died from blood loss, and she had to hope Elijah could control himself. However, she didn't see much chose. She did not want to have to count on Klaus to help her, even if he was willing to.
Elena took a deep breath and went to pull out the dagger. It would take Elijah a while to wake up. She would use that time to get him some blood. Before she could do it though, she heard a noise in the house. She immediately shut the coffin. She needed to wait until Stefan was gone to do this. At the very least, he would smell the blood once she cut herself. She couldn't risk him trying to stop her.
Moments later, the door opened and Stefan walked in carrying a paper bag, which he put down on one of the coffins. "Dinner."
Elena did nothing but glare at him in response. She could hardly believe this was the same person that was willing to give his life for her. She barely recognized him now.
"Oh, and I spoke to Klaus. It turns out you were wrong. Klaus does care quite a bit that you're his family. You should've seen how he reacted. It was like a switch flipped, almost like the humanity switch he forced me to flip," Stefan said.
Stefan's words were like a double-edged sword for Elena. Sure, if Stefan was to be believed, it meant Klaus cared enough to try to help her, but it also meant that if she'd been honest, she might have been able to save Jenna and John. That was something she'd have to live with for the rest of her life.
"You're finally getting it, aren't you? That this wouldn't have happened if it weren't for you?" Stefan asked.
"Go to Hell, Stefan! Yeah, maybe I could've saved my aunt and uncle, and I'll take responsibility for that. Although, I will say that half the reason I didn't tell Klaus then was because I was afraid he would think I was trying to stop the sacrifice and he might kill you for my efforts. I should've taken the risk. I should've let him kill you," Elena said. She didn't mean it. Even now, she didn't wish Stefan dead. She would probably never forgive him, but she didn't hate him either. However, she wanted to hurt him, and telling him that she wished she'd let him die was the best way she knew.
"You should've. I would rather be dead than to have become Klaus' puppet," he said.
Elena continued on as if he'd never spoken. "But I won't take responsibility for what you've become. Hell, Klaus isn't even to blame anymore, because your humanity is back on. You wouldn't be able to hate Klaus so much if it weren't, which means that all of this is your own choice. And that's something I'll never forgive you for."
As much as he wanted to, Stefan couldn't deny that Elena's words affected him. The part of him that still felt so much for her hated himself for what he was doing, but he refused to allow that part in, so any guilt he felt for that and any hurt he felt at her words, he pushed down. "I won't forgive you either. Eat your dinner."
Elena watched as he began to leave. "You know that if you're right about Klaus, you're as good as dead, right? You won't be able to keep this up forever, and once it's over, he'll kill you for it. And I won't stop him." Again, that was a lie. If she could stop Klaus from killing Stefan, she would, but he didn't need to know that.
Stefan turned back to her and smirked. "Or I'll kill him."
Elena scoffed. "You had the chance for that. I don't know what your endgame is, but it will fail. You can't beat Klaus, not now that you've stopped the only person that had a chance of hurting him. Now, get out."
Stefan didn't say anything more. He just left.
