Emergency! We had to go!
The author's tales were stuck in snow!
Not smuggled in by vet on call
Not put in Oscar's van at all;
Not put there by resistance folk.
A sudden storm had put a spoke
In well-planned wheels; the tales were stuck
Outside the Stalag, just our luck;
The planes changed course when storm winds struck
And could not drop the tales as planned,
Where friends were waiting close at hand;
To bring them to us, just as planned
I'm sure, by now, you understand
Things hardly ever go as planned.
In fact…they NEVER go as planned.

No time to think; as Schultz's voice
Boomed loud and clear; no time, no choice.
We shivered as we stood outside,
Watched snow and icy rain collide
Till Colonel Klink, at last, appeared
In layers of thick warm fleece; we jeered
As on and on he talked, we feared
We'd all freeze solid on the spot!
All warm and cosy, we were not!
In fur-lined clothing, we were not!
We really needed something hot
To stop us freezing on the spot.

Eventually, Klink let us go
To shake off several layers of snow
And huddle round the stove, just so.
But could we stay there steaming?…No!
Those tales were waiting …stuck in snow;
Those lovely authors' pride and joy;
We could not let the storms destroy
Their careful works of art. Oh boy!

The Colonel made the danger clear,
Then asked for three to volunteer.
I put my hand up straight away
Of course I did, without delay.
LeBeau then put his hand up, too
I knew he'd volunteer, I knew
That someone else would join us too…

You simply guessed! You did not know
That I would join you in the snow!
I know you're smirking too, LeBeau!
I do not need to see your face.
I simply got involved in case
You failed to find the landing place
Without my skill and expertise
Me?
A volunteer?
Oh, please!
