Chapter 0.6: Wild Connection

We have the ability to establish affective bonds between us who are of the same species. Over time, we have managed to establish a connection with other beings of different species to obtain a benefit. I mean, with the animals. Either for food or to obtain a benefit that both parties need. However, a need has been generated to protect beings that have been under the threat of extinction because of the same human being. Thanks to that concern, many animals have been saved. But even so, the fight continues without stopping.

And what does all that have to do with today's story? Well, more than you think. If we don't forget, our protagonist Zooli made the decision to study Zoology and Veterinary Medicine at the SeaWeed City University at the same time. Which was an institution of higher education expert in the study of Biology and careers related to it. Which was the right choice for our animal lover. She took advantage of her passion for animals to invest her time in a university career connected to her interests, which was a good choice. She worked very hard and managed to get straight A's. The academic load was not very difficult for someone who loves the subject and loves what she does.

The most exciting thing about the academic careers Zooli is studying is that a lot of it was hands-on. I mean, she got a lot of field practices. And in fact, our account focuses on a day of educational tour in the wildlife refuge of the same university.

"Thank you all so much for attending this field practice. I know that what you are going to do today will be of great benefit and you will receive good school credits. I am Professor Potter, a biologist and zoologist for many years. I have been working for the university since I graduated from right here. I have been in charge of this small wildlife refuge for more than 6 years. And it would be a pleasure to show you everything that is done here" It was a small, aquamarine blue fish woman in a safari outfit. Among the students was our protagonist Zooli. Which is not to mention how happy and excited she was. She was the happiest of the group of students. The teacher took them all over the shelter where there were many small or medium-sized animals. Most of them are animals rescued from illegal species trafficking or illegal hunting. In that place they gave them medical attention, food and even physical therapy so that they could return to their natural habitats in the future. What Zooli didn't expect is that she got so carried away with emotion that she didn't notice that she was lost from the group. She was confused and decided to find her peers and mentor. She entered a mysterious open door that connected a corridor with the habitat of one of the animals. Obviously, it was a security error and Zooli didn't get to see any signage until she ended up inside one of the habitats.

"Uh oh. I think I'm lost. And I'm inside one of the habitats. I'd better go before I get in trouble. Surely this place is empty. For something the door was open" Zooli said quietly to herself and decided to look for the exit until she noticed something strange. She listened as some nearby bushes began to make a strange sound. As if something was hidden "Huh?!"

"Grrrrrrrr" A slight growl began to be heard. Zooli, being an animal expert, found out that something was stalking her.

"Oh no…." She began to back away slowly to avoid drawing the attention of the animal that was stalking her among the hidden.

"GRRRUAAAH!"A loud roar sounded and the beast jumped out of its hiding place to attack Zooli. Thanks to her athletic skills that she had developed over the years, she managed to evade the surprise attack and immediately ran off to avoid being preyed on by the animal. It was about a big Bengal tiger that didn't look very friendly.

"AHHHHH!" Zooli decided to run straight for the exit without looking back. She knew that if she did, it could be the end of her own life. Unfortunately, when the exit was near, she tripped over a large stone "AGH!" She fell to the ground and suffered a severe scrape on her tail. She scrambled a bit and bumped into the wall. She was breathing hard and deep until in front of her, the beast appeared.

"Grrrrrr" The big cat with orange and white fur and black stripes closed in on the girl slowly and menacingly. Zooli was really scared and she had no escape.

"No...I don't have to...look into its eyes...I have to be...more relaxed" Zool tried to be brave in front of the big cat. She knew better than to show fear in front of the tiger. But something very unusual happened. The tiger approached her slowly, but without making any intimidating sounds. The cat sniffed at Zooli. She was nervous, but she decided to feign bravery to prevent her from being prey, even though the tiger already had her cornered. For some mysterious reason, the tiger decided to snuggle up next to Zooli and began to purr softly "Huh?!" The girl was confused. Normally, she would have been eaten by the tiger. But this particular tiger looks like it didn't want to eat her. It seems like it was only aggressive because he thought she was a threat, but then realized she wasn't. Zooli, very afraid and without thinking much, decided to caress its head a little, as if it was a domestic kitten. Her surprise was that.

"Rrrrrrr" The tiger began to purr loudly and felt comfortable with the girl. Zooli got nervous when the tiger decided to look into her eyes. She was trying to avoid eye contact so as not to provoke him. But she didn't expect that the cat just decided to lick her face.

"W..What kind of tiger are you?" Zooli said confusedly. She decided to get up slowly so as not to provoke the tiger. But the cat simply caressed its great body with the guppy's. It literally looks like a giant house cat "Hehehe"

"Zooli! What are you doing there? Get out of there!" It was Professor Potter. She was shocked to see them.

"I would try but it seems that the tiger is comfortable with me around" Zooli said while she was gently stroking the big cat's head. The animal seemed to be happy.

"First of all, she's a tigress…" Potter tried to explain to her.

"Tigress? Oh! So you´re a girl, huh?" The guppy said happily.

"...Yes, her name is Shari and...Wait! How come she hasn't hurt you? It doesn't make sense...Unless the rumors are true" The professor said confusedly.

"Rumors? About what?" Zooli was curious.

"Come with me and I'll tell you. Oh and... try not to let Shari run away" The blue fish commented. At first, Zooli had a hard time extricating herself from the great tigress's laps. Shari looked at the guppy in confusion. Zooli walked slowly and the cat followed her slowly without bad intentions. She was just curious. Thanks to Zooli's cunning and her reflexes, she managed to get close to the front door and managed to get out of the cage and close it. Shari simply looked with confused eyes at the girl who caught her eye.

A few minutes later, Professor Potter decided to speak to Zooli in her office. She wanted to talk in a more private place.

"As you can see, Shari is a large Bengal tigress that we recently rescued. She was being held captive as a pet by a dangerous man named Zubari Sarr" Potter started to explain the story.

"Zubari Sarr? I've heard rumors about him. But I don't know for sure who he is" Zooli tried to remember the moment that she heard about that name. Maybe in the news or something.

"He is one of the biggest international criminals. He is in the top of the most wanted criminals. Just like this Bossi Cadaverini. But he is different. He specializes in illegal hunting and illegal trafficking of species. He hunts for money and pleasure. So much so that he owns the largest and most expensive collection of "Animal Trophies". His goal is to hunt a specimen of each species of animal and of course... keep hunting to become even richer" Potter decided to show Zooli some photos of that infamous criminal. He was an adult guppy with dark skin with no hair and a scarred face with brown eyes. The most characteristic of this individual is his vest made of lion fur, which had the lion's head and its mane as a hood. In the photos of him, it was seen how he posed in front of his "prey" such as elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, among many other animals. Zooli could only feel horror and anger at the sight of those images. How is it possible that there are people who profit from the lives of innocent wild animals?

"...what a despicable man…." Zooli clenched her fists.

"That's how it is. Zubari dominates the black market for the sale of wild animals and products derived from them and has become a very dangerous man. Thanks to an alliance between special agents and organizations defending wildlife, they managed to find the last hiding place of this man. They managed to arrest some hunters and traffickers. Unfortunately, Zubari had already escaped and is still wanted to this day. However, weapons were seized and some animals were recovered. And among these animals... we find Shari. The University is a member of one of these organizations, so we offered to take care of some of the animals and help them. And well, the great Shari was one of the lucky ones" The blue fish explained how they found the big tigress.

"Wow...I didn't think Shari had been through so much" Zooli started to feel bad about her new animal friend.

"Interestingly, our studies indicate that they wanted to sell Shari as an exotic pet and not as fur. Surely they tried to tame her" Professor Potter added.

"And it looks like they did it...I mean...Shari could have killed me and eaten me...but she didn't. She started acting like a house cat" Zooli answered.

"That is debatable. Shari had never gotten so "affective" with any caregiver...until...you came along. Hmmmm I'm starting to think Shari saw something in you, girl. You must have an inexplicable gift with animals" The blue fish commented surprisedly.

"Well…I connected with my pets...I never thought that would help me with a tiger" The guppy was very confused.

"This is certainly an unusual and unique event. Do you know something? I want to propose something to you. You see, Shari's recovery therapies have been unable to advance because she is so aggressive towards others. But seeing what just happened today, maybe you are the key for Shari to recover her instincts to return to her habitat. Of course, I know that it is a very dangerous task for someone like you. That's why I want to offer you this as extra credits. With this job you will have good pay and advance in your career. But... only if you want. It is obvious that for someone your age this sounds..." The fish tried to convince her.

"Stop there...I accept" Zooli smirked.

"Huh?! Really?!"

"Yup! I must confess that I have a mysterious need to help Shari. I feel that it will be a unique experience. So...I'm in" Our brave guppy accepted the terms.

"But this can be dangerous" Potter said worriedly.

"With all due respect, Professor...I've been through some very dangerous situations before…" Zooli said remembering the epic and dangerous Battle for BubbleTucky.

"You've got guts, girl. I like that. Very good. There is work to be done"

It was the moment of truth. Now Zooli would have his first official practice with a real animal. Normally, a normal practice would be with a small animal such as a dog, cat or even rabbit. But the brave girl decided that her first practice would be with a towering Bengal tigress. In the early days, Zooli performed basic care such as checking the animal's eyesight, legs, claws, and even teeth (which they taught him to use anesthesia on animals to avoid a serious accident). In short, she performed the basic medical diagnoses. She would then help Shari through physical tests to get her used to the frenetic pace the tigress needs to hunt, run, hide, fight and flee. The guppy used a special protective uniform against attacks by claws or teeth of animals as a precaution. Although the strange thing is that it was not very necessary because Shari seems to trust Zooli. Therefore, the big tigress never harmed Zooli, even though she could do it easily. Really she was very domesticated and needs to recover her wild instinct.

During the process, Zooli learned to provide medical care to animals and in turn learned to perform special studies. But on top of that, she managed to establish an inexplicable connection with Shari. Both had an inexplicable link. The tigress was very gentle with Zooli. And only with her, because she didn't let anyone get close to her. The guppy played a lot with Shari in free time. The tigress played enchanted with her caretaker. Sometimes the cat could be annoying when they played, but thanks to Zooli's physical strength and skills, she could tolerate it. Luckily, Shari never did anything to hunt her down.

Everything was beautiful at the beginning, but little by little things began to change. Shari was starting to growl more and was being more attentive to Zooli's movements. Unfortunately, her wild instincts were returning. And on certain occasions, Zooli was about to receive claws and bites from the tigress. That was very emotionally painful for the girl who felt that there was something special between them. But it was all part of a process. Also, Shari has to return to her home sooner or later and the day was drawing near and Zooli didn't want to accept it. Professor Potter decided to talk about it

"Zooli, I know you love Shari very much. But you must understand that this is part of our job. She is a wild animal and she has her instincts well defined" Potter explained to her.

"I know! But you don't get it. Shari and I had something special. Something beautiful. A connection as I feel with my pets. She wouldn't hurt me...until these last few days" Zooli commented sadly.

"That's the point, dear. Shari is not a pet. She is a wild animal and her place in the world is in the jungle, free. The worst thing we can do for her is treat her like a pet. We would not be very different from Zubari" The professor explained. Zooli lowered her head sadly because she knew that the teacher was right. The fish woman saw her body language and put her fin on her shoulder to comfort her a bit "Zooli….If you really love Shari and you are sure of your ideals... you know that the best thing is to let her go... It is the best decision for her"

"...Yeah….You´re right….Can I at least say goodbye to her?" Zooli begged.

"Hmmmm….If that would make you feel better...I don't see why not...But remember...Be Careful" Potter decided to let Zooli get close to the tigress one more time. This time, through the protective glass. Shari just growled and roared. The guppy didn't say a single word. She simply moved closer to the protective glass to see the tigress closer.

"(sigh) Hi Shari. I don't know if you still remember me or if you already recovered your wild instincts. But I just want to tell you that I'm going to miss you very much. We went through a lot together and well... I think this is the farewell. I know you will be in a better place where you will be free. I just want you to know that you are in a very special place in my heart. I hope to see you soon. Bye, Shari" Zooli said as she reached out a hand on the protective glass. She stayed like that for a few seconds until she saw that the tigress approached the glass and extended one of her front paws to the glass as well. Right where the girl's hand was. They both stayed like that for a few seconds until Zooli withdrew his hand from her and slowly withdrew. We can't deny the fact that she shed a couple of tears. A short time later, a couple of guards would appear and give Shari some tranquilizer darts to put her to sleep, since they already had to take her to another place. The teacher decided to put her hand on her pupil's shoulder.

"You did a good job. Shari will be taken to a biological reserve in India. Finally she will be home and in turn we will be aware of her. You know? I have a friend there, I could contact her in case you want to go see Shari in the future" Potter said with a smile.

"...Thanks…I appreciate it" Zooli answered.

"Very good. You can withdraw. I'll do the report so you get the extra credits. Very good work. You deserve this break"

The guppy left there with many mixed feelings. On one hand, it hurt her to leave Shari. On the other hand, she was happy to know that the tigress would be in a better place, where she would be free and under care. She knew that she had done the right thing in taking care of her. She knew that it was something that she would do very soon, since it would be the profession that she would practice for the rest of her life. When she returned to her apartment, there was a thought that did not leave her alone. She couldn't forget that Shari was a victim of a dangerous man's greed. She knew that if that man remained free, he would cause a lot of damage to many more animals and could endanger several species just for selfish desires. Zooli had no positive feelings about it. She couldn't sit idly by. So from that day on, she would start a personal investigation. And when the time comes for her to have her college degrees, she would join a wildlife organization, seeking to stop this and other evil people.

"...I will come for you, Zubari…"

Another beautiful quiet chapter on an environmental issue. Obviously it is another chapter where he leaves an open door to a plot that will develop in BGAY. Will Zooli be entering dangerous ground? Time will tell.
